Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that influence business students’ adoption of e-learning systems by merging innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and the teaching for professional competence model (TPCM).
Design/methodology/approach
Snowball sampling was used to conduct the survey. In addition, 217 responses were obtained from students at private educational institutions. Similarly, literature on the determinants of e-learning adoption, TPCM, and IDT were reviewed to contribute to the factors that are instrumental in determining e-learning systems adoption.
Findings
The findings of the study show that e-learning systems adoption is influenced by factors such as online collaborative learning (OCL) and technology self-efficacy. Above all, the OCL variable was found to be influential in determining students’ adoption of e-learning systems platforms. On the contrary, perceived attributes such as perceived compatibility and perceived relative advantage were found not to be significant determinants of e-learning systems adoption.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributed not only to the theoretical extensions but also to practical implications, which would benefit the policymakers of higher education providers in terms of e-learning system adoption in the country.
Originality/value
IDT and TPCM models are evaluated alongside additional variables, namely, OCL and technology self-efficacy. As a result, this paper will serve as a useful reference guide for academicians, higher education administrators, and future researchers.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the impact of digitalisation on waqf activities, focussing on blockchain, crowdfunding and artificial intelligence to predict future trends in digitalisation within waqf activities.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used a quantitative approach to combine the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT) to comprehensively analyze the elements that affect the adoption of digital technology. SmartPLS software conducted the data analysis after collecting the data using SPSS. In this study, 310 respondents comprising Muslims who contribute to waqf were collected.
Findings
This research provides important insights into the elements influencing future behavior and can help policymakers promote and facilitate the digitalisation of waqf activities, not only in Malaysia but also in similar situations worldwide.
Research limitations/implications
Analysis indicated that four hypotheses were validated, implying that effort expectancy, compatibility, observability and trialability are significant determinants affecting intention. The findings suggest significant potential for further research. This paper delineates numerous methodological challenges and concerns while proposing recommendations for further research. Future research could use additional search phrases and engines not incorporated in this study to provide a more comprehensive overview. This study primarily concentrates on the applications of waqf development, digitalisation, blockchain, crowdfunding and artificial intelligence.
Practical implications
The four hypotheses regarding facilitating condition, performance expectation, relative advantage and social influence were not supported as they were found to have no significant impact on intention. For practitioners, based on the findings, it can give some insight into digitalisation’s influence on the intention of contributing to waqf in society. As for the researchers, there could be some ideas to study other than the factors mentioned in this study, as well as the supporting literature for their studies.
Originality/value
This paper provides useful insights on how emerging technology can potentially disrupt the traditional waqf landscape. It emphasizes the unique contributions of digitalization in improving transparency and accessibility, blockchain in ensuring security and trust, crowdfunding in mobilizing resources and artificial intelligence in optimizing decision-making processes.

Abstract
Recently, the concept of frugal innovation (FI) has gained relevance in both academic and societal discourse. Whether disruptive frugal digital innovation is contributing to the growth of small and medium-sized businesses in Africa is a subject of debate. Generally speaking, frugal inventions are linked to developing nations where sizable consumer groups at the base of the pyramid have unfulfilled needs. Africa, a continent with growing economies, has witnessed a surge in disruptive FI, which makes this chapter an important discourse. Digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), social media, cloud computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are finding their way in the market, and how it is affecting human development and small enterprises has been a subject for debate. This book chapter presents findings on how FI has led to sustainable human development and growth of micro, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as revealed by a review of existing literature on the subject. According to findings from the literature, MSMEs' connections and interactions with partners, suppliers, and consumers have improved as a result of the adoption of disruptive digital platforms. Additionally, while operating in challenging settings in Africa, digital technologies offer certain intrinsic traits and information technology capabilities that allow firms to grow and flourish. Digital platforms are viewed as transparent, collaborative instruments that provide economic opportunities throughout the ecosystem. The results also show that disruptive digital technologies offer MSMEs an inexpensive, simple-to-use, and simple-to-deploy solution in order to compete with stronger incumbents across a range of industries.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify the factors that may account for the intention to use Paytech services within an Islamic context. The authors propose an expanded version of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which includes religiosity (R) and social influence (SI), to develop a causal-predictive analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
The research model and hypotheses were assessed using partial least square-structured equation modeling on data collected from 531 potential Paytech users.
Findings
The results reveal that religiosity has a more significant direct effect on the intention to use Paytech services than on actual use, while social influence has a more significant direct effect on use than on the intention to use Paytech services.
Research limitations/implications
Cultural differences within the Middle East and North Africa region could influence the acceptance and usage of the new Paytech services.
Practical implications
The valuable insights gained from this study can help Fintech managers, financial institutions and developers of new financial services design effective strategies to encourage user adoption of Paytech services. Companies could prioritize implementing word-of-mouth marketing initiatives to encourage early adopters to recommend the service.
Social implications
The Paytech services would enable access to financial services for the entire Muslim population regardless of their location, gender or age, thereby fostering financial inclusion.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to explore the intention to use Paytech services in two Islamic countries: Saudi Arabia and Palestine. From a theoretical perspective, this work contributes to the academic literature by analyzing the mediating effects of two external variables, religiosity and social influence.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the role of corporate governance (CG) in the earnings management (EM) of affiliated companies in family business groups (FBGs) listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), using principal–principal agency theory.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample of 327 nonfinancial firms of the PSX, consisting of 187 group-affiliated firms and 140 nonaffiliated firms has been used in this study for the period of 2010 to 2019. The study uses different regression models for analysis, with robustness tests of various alternative measures of EM and FBG affiliation. In addition, endogeneity is controlled with the propensity score matching method.
Findings
The findings show that EM is less prevalent in affiliated firms compared to nonaffiliated companies. The results show a negative and significant relationship between FBGs affiliated firms and EM. Moreover, the results also show a positive relationship between EM and the interaction term of the CG index and group affiliation. It refers to the fact that effective governance cannot reduce EM in affiliated companies of FBGs as well as in the nonfinancial companies of the PSX. In addition, the quality of CG is higher in affiliated companies compared to its counterpart in nonaffiliated firms. The findings support the principal–principal agency theory that CG cannot mitigate the expropriating behavior of controlling shareholders against minority shareholders by reducing EM in emerging markets due to the ownership concentration phenomenon.
Research limitations/implications
This research study has implications for small investors, government agencies and regulators. The findings of the study show that CG code should make it mandatory for companies to reveal information about their complex ownership structure and ownership information about affiliated companies and directors. Furthermore, it is suggested to revisit the code of CG in the Pakistani context of principal–principal conflict instead of the agent–principal explanation of agency theory based on Anglo–Saxon countries.
Originality/value
This research study has contributed to the CG and FBG literature in relation to EM in idiosyncratic settings of Pakistan. One of the prime contributions of the paper is the development of a comprehensive CG index. This research study used detailed, manually collected novel data on affiliated firms of FBGs in Pakistan.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore employee green behavior in higher education institution (HEI) laboratories in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative approach was used to explore the green behavior experiences of individuals working in HEI laboratories. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine participants selected via purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was performed on the collected data using ATLAS.ti 9 software.
Findings
The analysis of the collected data identified five themes related to the green behavior in HEI laboratories. These themes, ranked in descending order of frequency, are conserving, avoiding harm, transforming, influencing others and taking initiative. The conserving theme accounted for one-third of the subcodes, as did the avoiding harm theme. The final one-third of subcodes was distributed among the remaining three themes.
Research limitations/implications
This study conducted virtual interviews and coincidentally interviewed only female participants. The findings contribute to the existing literature on the themes of green behavior among laboratory staff in HEIs and provide valuable insights for university managers and sustainability coordinators in shaping policies to promote environmentally friendly practices and address negative practices.
Originality/value
Despite existing studies on environmental practices in various workplace settings, the exploration of green behavior in HEI laboratories in the Kingdom of Bahrain from the employee perspective remains limited. This study presents a significant opportunity for researchers to explore sustainability in HEI laboratories and for policymakers to develop corresponding strategies.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify factors that affect the intention and actual adoption of cashless payment (ACP) among Vietnamese youths. Extending the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model with two impelling factors (perceived trust [PTR] and lifestyle compatibility [LCM]), this study also examined the mediating effect of intention to adopt cashless payment (ICP) on the relationships of UTAUT model components with the actual ACP.
Design/methodology/approach
All data were collected online from 422 Vietnamese youths through online survey, and partial least squares structural equation modelling was performed to analyse the data.
Findings
The study’s results illustrated the positive and significant effects of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, LCM and PTR on ICP. However, social influence was found to exhibit a negative effect on ICP. Furthermore, ICP was found to contribute no mediation effects on the relationships of any of the components with the actual ACP.
Practical implications
This study’s findings are widely useful for marketers and managers to plot their promotional and campaigning strategies, emphasising factors that motivate consumers to adopt cashless payment. The obtained findings also benefit architects and designers in designing products and services by consolidating lifestyle standards and other requirements of consumers. Policymakers should implement policies and strategies to enforce rules and educate the public to widely adopt cashless payment across various sectors.
Originality/value
This study extended the UTAUT model with two new variables, i.e. PTR and LCM.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of published research on the halal value chain (HVC) that is accessible through the Scopus database.
Design/methodology/approach
A corpus of 120 research papers that were indexed by Scopus underwent an extensive investigation. The authors used the bibliometrix program and the VOSviewer software to analyze and visualize the exported data.
Findings
The results suggest a rise in scholarly investigations carried out in this specific domain, with “food supply,” “decision-making” and “supply chain management” as the most frequent emerging terms. This study contributes to the existing study by clarifying the connections between the supply chain and the HVC and setting future research directions.
Originality/value
This study makes a substantial contribution by defining a new area of academic study and establishing a previously unidentified link between the literature of halal logistics, halal supply chain and the HVC.

The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive exploration of academic research on halal purchasing decisions and consumer behavior by integrating bibliometric and systematic review methodologies.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a multi-method approach, combining bibliometric and systematic review methodologies, to comprehensively analyze the domain of halal purchasing decisions and consumer behavior. A data set of 184 articles published between 2007 and 2024 was sourced from the Scopus database. The bibliometric analysis was conducted using Bibliometrix in R, facilitating performance analysis, science mapping and network analysis to explore key authors, affiliations, collaborations and thematic trends. Additionally, the systematic review examined the limitations and future research areas discussed in prior studies, providing the basis for formulating potential research questions to address identified gaps.
Findings
The study identifies significant contributions within the domain of halal purchasing decisions and consumer behavior, emphasizing the critical roles of religiosity, trust and halal certification as dominant themes. Bibliometric analysis reveals key authors, influential publications and collaborative networks, highlighting Malaysia as a central hub for research in this field. Additionally, the analysis underscores the intellectual structure and thematic evolution, identifying underexplored areas such as non-Muslim perspectives, emerging halal industries and geographic diversity. The systematic review complements these insights by addressing recurring methodological and theoretical limitations, offering targeted recommendations for future research.
Originality/value
This research uniquely combines bibliometric and systematic review methodologies to provide a comprehensive review of the halal consumer behavior literature, identifying limitations and gaps in prior studies and proposing actionable areas for future research.
