Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore how psychological perceptions and family situations drive women into necessity- or opportunity-based female entrepreneurship (NBFE or OBFE) and the moderating role of gender equality.
Design/methodology/approach
This study adopts multilevel logistic regression analysis to examine relationships based on a sample of 6,843 women across eight developing countries drawn from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM).
Findings
The findings suggest that capability and opportunity perceptions positively affect NBFE and OBFE. Family responsibility burden positively affects NBFE and has a U-shaped relationship with OBFE. Household income negatively affects NBFE but positively affects OBFE. Gender equality weakens the U-shaped relationship between family responsibility burden and OBFE but strengthens the positive relationship between capability perception and NBFE and between opportunity perception and NBFE.
Research limitations/implications
The study highlights the need for targeted policies and support that consider the distinct antecedents and mechanisms of NBFE and OBFE, as well as the importance of promoting gender equality and entrepreneurial education to empower women in their entrepreneurial endeavors. A limitation of this study is the reliance on older data from the GEM, which may not fully capture the current dynamics of developing societies. While the study provides valuable insights, future research should incorporate more recent data to enhance the applicability of the results.
Originality/value
This study deepens the understanding of antecedents of NBFE and OBFE, breaking through the existing literature that neglects the heterogeneity of female entrepreneurship (FE).

Abstract
Purpose
Manufacturing firms must strengthen their supply chain resilience to survive in turbulent business environments. This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to enhance supply chain resilience.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on organizational information processing theory, the research investigates the impact of AI usage on proactive and reactive supply chain resilience by fostering referent power in the context of demand dynamism. The study analyzes survey data from 285 Chinese manufacturing firms using structural equation modeling and regression analysis.
Findings
The results indicate that AI usage can enhance both proactive and reactive supply chain resilience. Referent power only mediates the relationship between AI usage and reactive supply chain resilience. Furthermore, this mediating effect is stronger under high-level demand dynamism.
Originality/value
This study highlights the value of AI usage in strengthening supply chain resilience and uncovers its underlying mechanisms. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
Little is established about the mechanism through which employee voice is connected to employee mental health. Drawing from social exchange theory, this study examines how employee engagement practices are associated with employee voice, which further influences employee mental health. In addition, the study includes parallel mediation and examines whether perceived interpersonal justice (PIJ) and empathetic leadership (EL) mediate the relationship between employee engagement practices and employee voice.
Design/methodology/approach
Three time-lagged surveys of 457 employees in the Indian information technology (IT) sector were accomplished.
Findings
As hypothesised, employee engagement practices have a positive influence on employee voice. Secondly, employee voice has a positive influence on the employee’s mental health. PIJ and EL were also found to be significant parallel mediators for the relationship among employee engagement practices and employee voice.
Practical implications
This study displays the positive influence of employee engagement practices on employee voice. Further, the employee’s voice influences the employee’s mental health. Therefore, it suggests means for improving its pervasiveness in an organisation.
Originality/value
This research paper is an important contribution as it is one of the few studies examining the role of PIJ and EL as parallel mediators of employee engagement practices and employee voice. It also answers repeated calls for more research on employee mental health in the IT sector.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the role of ChatGPT literacy within the technology acceptance model (TAM) framework and its potential for learners of English as a foreign language (EFL), whereby ChatGPT is integrated into their informal digital learning of English activities.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from 543 Chinese EFL learners were collected using a cross-sectional quantitative method. The relationships between six factors, namely, ChatGPT literacy, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, behavioral intention and actual use, were conceptualized and tested based on the TAM framework. The conceptualized model was verified using partial least squares structural equation modeling.
Findings
The findings indicated that ChatGPT literacy is a significant predictor of perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, which were the two core variables with a significant impact on attitude. Perceived ease of use positively influenced perceived usefulness, indicating the mediating role of perceived usefulness in this path. Attitude significantly and positively influenced behavioral intention, which positively predicted actual use. Moreover, ChatGPT literacy moderated the relationship between behavioral intention and actual use.
Originality/value
This study extends the TAM framework by incorporating ChatGPT literacy as a predictor and moderator between behavioral intention and actual use. Empirical evidence is further offered for including ChatGPT as a language-learning instrument with great potential for EFL learners in extramural EFL learner settings.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate both the impact of different reward types and the adoption of knowledge-sharing practice on a crowdsourcing-based open innovation contest. Despite the benefit of knowledge sharing, contestants could struggle to find a balance between knowledge sharing and knowledge protection in open innovation.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors' approach follows a stylised contest model in a game-theoretical setting in which contestants first decide on their efforts and then the contest sponsor chooses the winner. Moreover, the outcome of an open innovation contest is delineated as either intermediate goods that require further refinement and risk-taking versus a market-ready end product for the contest sponsor. The authors also investigate how knowledge sharing among contestants would be influenced by reward types such as fixed-monetary prizes vs performance-contingent awards.
Findings
The contest sponsor will lower the prize level after adopting knowledge sharing. Therefore, the total effort will decline regardless of the reward type. Moreover, the choice of reward types depends on the contest sponsor's characteristics because the performance-contingent award is suitable for a large market size but the fixed-monetary prize can more efficiently raise the quantity of contestant inputs.
Originality/value
Prior studies have tested the connection between contest performance and knowledge sharing in crowdsourcing-based contests; however, there is not an integrated framework to best design the operation of a contest when considering different reward types and knowledge-sharing practices.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to reveal the nonlinear moderating effect of age on the inverted U-shaped relationship between perceived development human resource practices (DHRPs) and work-related learning with affective commitment being the mediator.
Design/methodology/approach
Regression models combined with the bootstrap method and multigroup analysis, and two-wave survey data from 780 Chinese employees were used to test hypotheses.
Findings
The results revealed that perceived DHRPs related to affective commitment in an inverted U pattern and affective commitment further related to work-related learning positively, which resulted in an inverted U-shaped relationship between perceived DHRPs and work-related learning. Age moderated the nature of the relationships between perceived DHRPs and both the outcomes, such that they were related negatively among younger employees but inverted U-shaped among older employees.
Originality/value
This study reveals inverted U-shaped rather than linear relationships between perceived DHRPs and employee outcomes and shows that age moderates the nature instead of the strength of the relationships.

Abstract
Purpose
Employability skills training programmes are an effective means for reducing unemployment rates. Such programmes also have the potential to improve the general well-being (e.g. self-efficacy) of disadvantaged individuals, however, reliable longitudinal evaluations of the psychological benefits of such programmes are limited. The present study evaluated the impact of an employability programme offered to disadvantaged adults in North-West England on self-efficacy. Additionally, the study aimed to identify risk factors for programme disengagement to identify at-risk groups that require further support.
Design/methodology/approach
Secondary longitudinal data pertaining to the background characteristics, programme engagement and self-efficacy scores (repeatedly measured on a monthly basis) of 308 programme users were analysed.
Findings
Results demonstrated that employability programme engagement significantly increased self-efficacy scores. Additionally, the findings suggested that individuals with mental health and learning difficulties were more likely to disengage from the programme. The findings demonstrate that employability programmes can have a positive impact on the well-being of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, however, prolonged engagement is needed for which some individuals require further support with.
Originality/value
The present study analysed longitudinal data from a diverse sample of disadvantaged individuals to reliably evaluate psychological outcomes from employability training programmes.

Abstract
Purpose
Audit firms have a strong historical tradition of professionalism, but they are also commercial entities. This study aims to investigate the relationship between auditor cash compensation and office-level financial performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses proprietary compensation expense and financial performance data from audit offices in China. Using the ordinary least squares regressions, this study tests the association between per capita compensation and office-level financial outcomes.
Findings
This study provides evidence that audit offices offering higher compensation achieve more profitable performance, as reflected in increased market share, higher return on assets and greater operating profit margins. Mechanism tests suggest that reductions in auditor turnover, driven by compensation incentives, partially account for this performance improvement. Additional tests show that the benefits of compensation incentives are particularly pronounced in audit firms licensed to conduct listed firm audits or when accompanied by staff training and technical development. Furthermore, both partner-level and staff auditor compensation significantly enhance office-level financial performance. The results might be of interest to both practitioners and regulatory bodies.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine the relationship between auditor cash compensation and audit-office profitability. The findings highlight important policy implications for audit firms seeking to retain high-caliber auditors and maximize their economic benefits through human capital investments, including compensation, education, training and technical development.
