Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the causal and reciprocal relationships between participation in travel and recreational activities and depression alleviation among survivors of traumatic events. It seeks to uncover the transformative potential of these activities as nonpharmacological interventions and to provide insights that inform the therapeutic design of travel in rehabilitation contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a longitudinal dataset, this study employs the random intercept cross-lagged panel model – a robust technique for evaluating causal relationships in nonexperimental longitudinal research – to assess the reciprocal effects between travel and recreation participation and depression severity over time.

Findings

Individuals with more severe depression are more likely to engage in travel as a coping mechanism. However, travel does not inherently alleviate depressive symptoms, likely because its physical and emotional demands often outweigh its benefits. This highlights the need to transform travel into structured interventions to maximize therapeutic potential. In contrast, recreational activities exhibit a stronger therapeutic effect, with early participation reducing depressive symptoms and lower depression levels, subsequently encouraging continued engagement in recreation over time.

Originality/value

By highlighting the interplay between social causation and social withdrawal theories, this research proposes transforming travel experiences into structured therapeutic interventions, pioneering a new perspective on integrating health and tourism studies. The study encourages researchers to adopt a holistic approach to understanding the health benefits of travel, considering both the influence of external factors on health and how individuals respond to their psychological state.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a rapid optimization design framework for the electric propulsion system of tiltrotor aircraft with a comprehensive set of propeller and motor parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

To enhance the prediction accuracy, the authors have developed correction models for both the propeller and motor, i.e. the propeller performance model is based on blade element momentum theory, with the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes method to obtain blade airfoil aerodynamic data, and the motor performance model incorporates an experimentally corrected second-order equivalent circuit model. Using Bayesian optimization algorithms, the authors have addressed the mixed-integer nonlinear programming design problem, which includes discrete variables such as the number of propeller blades and blade airfoil type, as well as continuous variables such as propeller diameter, pitch angle, chord length distribution, twist angle distribution, initial motor resistance, no-load current and KV value.

Findings

To estimate the aircraft-level performance, the authors have integrated the electric propulsion system into the tiltrotor’s overall mission profile, where an energy consumption reduction of 34.1% for the mission profile can be achieved after propeller and motor simultaneous optimization.

Originality/value

This study provides a valuable tool for the preliminary design and optimization of the electric propulsion systems for tiltrotor aircraft.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on self-verification theory, this study examines the impact of authentic leadership on employee expediency in China. Specifically, the authors investigate the mediating effects of self-verification striving on this relationship, as well as the moderating effects of leader–member exchange.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors surveyed 502 employees and their direct supervisors from 96 work units in one Chinese province and utilized multi-level path analysis to test a model of moderated mediation.

Findings

The study analysis results suggest that authentic leadership significantly contributes to reducing employee expediency in the surveyed Chinese companies. Self-verification striving mediates this relationship. Furthermore, leader–member exchange enhances the positive relationship between authentic leadership and self-verification striving.

Research limitations/implications

This study extends the understanding of antecedents of employee expediency and also extends previous research on the role of self-verification in shaping employee behaviors. The limitation is that the results are specific to China, and the study only relied on cross-sectional data.

Practical implications

The current study suggests that organizations should consider implementing training programs for their leaders to cultivate traits associated with authentic leadership. Furthermore, managers should actively promote employee engagement in discussions related to work objectives, methods and efficiency to assist them in their self-verification striving. They need to make efforts to enhance the climate of leader–member exchange, thereby reducing employee expediency.

Originality/value

This research identifies self-verification striving as key mediators that link authentic leadership to employee expediency and reveals the moderating role of leader–member exchange in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to integrate perspectives of transaction costs and capabilities to investigate how the configurational fit between outsourcing strategies, asset specificity of projects and the capabilities of general contractors could achieve high outsourcing performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, this study analyzes 31 outsourcing cases in construction projects to examine outsourcing performance under different combinations of transaction costs and capabilities.

Findings

The findings highlight six different but functionally equivalent configurations to high outsourcing performance, which vary according to attributes of projects and capabilities of contractors. Further, this study develops four context-dependent paths that link outsourcing strategies to high outsourcing performance: leading practitioner, collaborative manager, partnership dependent, and struggler.

Practical implications

How do contractors in construction projects navigate outsourcing practices to high performance? This study provides a configurational perspective to make outsourcing strategy decisions. Based on the firm’s capabilities and project asset specificity, contractors are encouraged to select from six different but functionally equivalent combinations and thereby four outsourcing strategies, namely leading practitioner, collaborative manager, partnership dependent, and struggler, to achieve high outsourcing performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a holistic perspective that integrates production and transaction costs to analyze contractors’ outsourcing strategies, contributing to the integration of the transaction cost perspective and capability perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

Political factors play a crucial role in China's initial public offering (IPO) market due to its distinctive institutional context (i.e. “economic decentralization” and “political centralization”). Given the significant level of IPO underpricing in China, we examine the impact of local political uncertainty (measured by prefecture-level city official turnover rate) on IPO underpricing.

Design/methodology/approach

Using 2,259 IPOs of A-share listed companies from 2001 to 2019, we employ a structural equation model (SEM) to examine the channel (voluntarily lower the issuance price vs aftermarket trading) through which political uncertainty affects IPO underpricing. We check the robustness of the results using bootstrap tests, adopting alternative proxies for political uncertainty and IPO underpricing and employing subsample analysis.

Findings

Local official turnover-induced political uncertainty increases IPO underpricing by IPO firms voluntarily reducing the issuance price rather than by affecting investor sentiment in aftermarket trading. These relations are stronger in firms with pre-IPO political connections. The effect of political uncertainty on IPO underpricing is also contingent upon the industry and the growth phase of an IPO firm, more pronounced in politically sensitive industries and firms listed on the growth enterprise market board.

Originality/value

Local government officials in China usually have a short tenure and Chinese firms witness significantly severe IPO underpricing. By introducing the SEM model in studying China IPO underpricing, this study identifies the channel through which local government official turnover to political uncertainty on IPO underpricing.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media texts as a data source in depression research have emerged as a significant convergence between Information Management and Public Health in recent years. This paper aims to sort out the depression-related study conducted on the text on social media, with particular attention to the research theme and methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors finally selected research articles published in Web of Science, Wiley, ACM Digital Library, EBSCO, IEEE Xplore and JMIR databases, covering 57 articles.

Findings

(1) According to the coding results, Depression Prediction and Linguistic Characteristics and Information Behavior are the two most popular themes. The theme of Patient Needs has progressed over the past few years. Still, there is a lesser focus on Stigma and Antidepressants. (2) Researchers prefer quantitative methods such as machine learning and statistical analysis to qualitative ones. (4) According to the analysis of the data collection platforms, more researchers used comprehensive social media sites like Reddit and Facebook than depression-specific communities like Sunforum and Alonelylife.

Practical implications

The authors recommend employing machine learning and statistical analysis to explore factors related to Stigmatization and Antidepressants thoroughly. Additionally, conducting mixed-methods studies incorporating data from diverse sources would be valuable. Such approaches would provide insights beneficial to policymakers and pharmaceutical companies seeking a comprehensive understanding of depression.

Originality/value

This article signifies a pioneering effort in systematically gathering and examining the themes and methodologies within the intersection of health-related texts on social media and depression.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumers often face trade-offs between important product attributes. Previous research suggests that individuals tend to prioritize attribute differences that are easily processed and aligned. This paper aims to examine the contexts in which nonalignable attribute differences can positively impact consumers’ perceptions of products.

Design/methodology/approach

Four lab experiments were conducted to explore how consumer preferences for superior-alignable versus superior-nonalignable products vary based on purchase occasions, with a specific focus on routine and special occasions.

Findings

Consumers tend to prefer superior-nonalignable products on special occasions and superior-alignable products on routine occasions. This is driven by stronger uniqueness motives on special (vs routine) occasions, as consumers associate nonalignable attribute differences more closely with product specialness. The research also explores the moderating roles of consumers’ need for uniqueness (NFU) and psychological ownership. Consumers with higher levels of NFU consistently prefer superior-nonalignable products, regardless of the occasion type. Additionally, when consumers feel psychological ownership of products with superior-alignable attributes, the perceived specialness of these products increases, reducing the influence of occasion type on consumer preferences for attribute alignability.

Originality/value

This research emphasizes the importance of aligning product attribute differences with specific purchase occasions in marketing strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of ecosystem-related digital decoupling capability (DDC) and digital integrative capability (DIC) on manufacturing firms’ radical service innovation (RSI) and the moderating effect of strategic flexibility, specifically resource flexibility (RF) and culture flexibility (CF).

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed empirical survey data collected from 238 Chinese manufacturing firms to test all hypotheses through hierarchical multiple regression analyses.

Findings

DDC and DIC have positive effects on RSI, with DDC exerting a stronger impact. RF and CF strengthen the positive effect of DIC on RSI, whereas CF diminishes DDC’s positive effect on RSI, and RF does not moderate this effect.

Practical implications

Manufacturing firms should prioritize developing ecosystem-related DDC and DIC to drive RSI, especially DDC. Managers should improve firms’ RF and CF when leveraging DIC to drive RSI. However, they should minimize the negative impact of CF when leveraging DDC to drive RSI.

Originality/value

This study shifts the service innovation capabilities from the firm to the ecosystem level, opening a new perspective for exploring RSI’s driving mechanism. With RF and CF as the moderators, the findings reveal the contingent impact mechanism of ecosystem-related digital capabilities on RSI, which provides profound insights into the complex role of strategic flexibility in the new contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between managerial ability and innovation efficiency, the mediating effect of digital transformation and the moderating effect of internal control.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected A-share manufacturing listed companies in China from 2008 to 2019 and analyzed the data by means of multiple regression analysis, mediating effect test, moderating effect test and heterogeneity test. Finally, the authors conducted robustness test by remeasuring key variables and adding control variables.

Findings

The empirical results show that the higher managerial ability can improve innovation efficiency, internal control has a positive moderating effect and digital transformation plays a partial mediating effect on the relationship between managerial ability and innovation efficiency. Specially, it is found that the mediating effect of digital transformation is not significant in non-state-owned firms.

Practical implications

This study suggests that it is necessary to focus on the managerial ability in terms of both cultivation and supervision, to further deepen the digital transformation from the aspects of firms, government and society, especially to support the digital transformation of non-state-owned firms, and to make efforts to improve the corporate governance mechanism and internal control system, so as to better comprehensively realize the improvement of enterprise innovation efficiency.

Originality/value

Based on the mediating effect analysis of digital transformation and the moderating effect analysis of internal control, this study explores the role of managerial ability on innovation efficiency from a new perspective, expanding the related theoretical framework and research boundaries.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of workplace inclusion continues to gain scholarly acclaim. However, in reality, many employees choose to ostracize their colleagues post workplace relationship strife. With this notion the present study aims to delve into the intricate linkages between workplace relationship conflict (WRC) and employee ostracism behavior (EOB), exploring the serial mediating roles of relational identification (RI) and emotional energy (EE). Additionally, the study examines the potential moderating effect of perceived forgiveness climate (PFC) to understand how forgiveness climate may serve as a boundary condition in shaping these crucial relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis utilized five-wave time-tagged data collected from 228 employees through scenario and survey methods. The Hayes PROCESS Macro was employed to examine the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate a positive influence of WRC on EOB. Additionally, RI and EE sequentially mediate the relationship between WRC and EOB. Furthermore, PFC moderates the serial mediation process (RI and EE) between WRC and EOB as well as the adverse effects of WRC on RI.

Originality/value

Grounded in the theoretical framework of conservation of resource (COR) theory and cognitive-affective personality system (CAPS) theory, the present study offers new insights. By establishing the complicated interplay of RI and EE between WRC and EOB along with the moderating role of PFC, the study extends the understanding of the mechanisms involved, providing a more comprehensive perspective. By shedding light on these complicated interconnected links, the study paved the way for positive social dynamics at work.
