Abstract

Purpose

To promote the success of peer-to-peer accommodation, this study examines the effects of online host–guest interaction as well as the interaction's boundary conditions of listing price and reputation on listing popularity.

Design/methodology/approach

Using 330,686 data collected from Airbnb in the United States of America, the authors provide empirical evidence to answer whether social-oriented self-presentation and response rate influence listing popularity from the perspective of social exchange theory (SET). In addition, the authors investigate how these two kinds of online host–guest interactions work with listing price and reputation to influence listing popularity.

Findings

The results reveal the positive association between online host–guest interaction and listing popularity. Notably, the authors find that listing price strengthens but listing reputation weakens the positive effects of online host–guest interactions on listing popularity in peer-to-peer accommodation.

Originality/value

This study is the first attempt to adopt SET to explain the importance of online host–guest interactions in influencing listing popularity as well as examine the moderating role of listing price and reputation on the above relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to optimize and improve conventional welding using EMF assisted technology. Current industrial production has put forward higher requirements for welding technology, so the optimization and improvement of traditional welding methods become urgent needs.

Design/methodology/approach

External magnetic field assisted welding is an emerging technology in recent years, acting in a non-contact manner on the welding. The action of electromagnetic forces on the arc plasma leads to significant changes in the arc behavior, which affects the droplet transfer and molten pool formation and ultimately improve the weld seam formation and joint quality.

Findings

In this paper, different types of external magnetic fields are analyzed and summarized, which mainly include external transverse magnetic field, external longitudinal magnetic field and external cusp magnetic field. The research progress of welding behavior under the effect of external magnetic field is described, including the effect of external magnetic field on arc morphology, droplet transfer and weld seam formation law.

Originality/value

However, due to the extremely complex physical processes under the action of the external magnetic field, the mechanism of physical fields such as heat, force and electromagnetism in the welding has not been thoroughly analyzed, in-depth theoretical and numerical studies become urgent.

Abstract

The global popularity of short video platforms has surged with the rapid development of mobile internet and 5G technology. DOUYIN, among other platforms, has amassed a massive user base in China. This study presents a theoretical framework based on media dependency theory and user stickiness perspectives. It identifies three key factors that affect user stickiness: platform algorithms, content resources and user interaction. An interpretive philosophy and inductive qualitative approach were adopted to conduct an in-depth case study of DOUYIN. Thematic analysis of secondary data from various sources was used. The findings demonstrate DOUYIN’s innovative approach to utilising advanced algorithms, diverse content and social interactions to enhance user engagement. DOUYIN utilises machine learning techniques to create user profiles and comprehend video content. It subsequently provides real-time personalised recommendations and optimises the algorithms based on user feedback. DOUYIN also incorporates PGC-, UGC- and PUGC-generated content, supported by a creator incentive system. Moreover, DOUYIN enables interactions between users, creators and the platform through commenting, sharing and live streaming features.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to discuss the contribution of street art projects to the place-making of villages and the effects it generates for local stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework is developed based on the main characteristics of the place-making process, street art, creative place-making, as well as place identity, revitalisation and regeneration. This framework defines a set of thematic categories for the qualitative content analysis of online information, e.g. websites, media and blog posts, as well as in-depth interviews with local stakeholders.

Findings

This research presents the contribution of street art in place-making involving citizens, local businesses and international artists in a collective act to preserve local identity and revitalise and regenerate villages.

Research limitations/implications

The research is focused only on villages. Cities are not considered in the research.

Practical implications

Street art projects provide villages with several opportunities, such as stimulating place regeneration and revitalisation, giving new shape and decoration to neighbourhoods and streets and attracting visitors and business. Moreover, street art is commonly used to communicate local history, culture, traditions and social and political facts, helping places to vehiculate their identity and their messages to the next generations. Street art is also used as a part of a place branding strategy.

Social implications

The village gets the opportunity to exploit the street art value proposition to stimulate the restocking of the place, if the primary stakeholders of the place are ready to invest in the new place identity giving trust to the street art project.

Originality/value

Street art projects contribute to the place-making of villages. They are used to communicate place identity, fostering cooperation between local stakeholders and economic and social development.

Abstract

Purpose

The waste-to-energy (WtE) project plays a significant role in the sustainable development of urban environments. However, the inherent “Not in my backyard” (NIMBY) effect presents substantial challenges to site selection decisions. While effective public participation is recognized as a potential solution, research on incorporating it into site selection decision-making frameworks remains limited. This paper aims to establish a multi-attribute group decision-making framework for WtE project site selection that considers public participation to enhance public satisfaction and ensure project success.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, based on consideration of public demand, a WtE project site selection decision indicator system was constructed from five dimensions: natural, economic, social, environmental and other supporting conditions. Next, the Combination Ordered Weighted Averaging (C-OWA) operator and game theory were applied to integrate the indicator weight preferences of experts and the public. Additionally, an interactive, dynamic decision-making mechanism was established to address the heterogeneity among decision-making groups and determine decision-maker weights. Finally, in an intuitive fuzzy environment, an “acronym in Portuguese of interactive and multi-criteria decision-making” (TODIM) method was used to aggregate decision information and evaluate the pros and cons of different options.

Findings

This study develops a four-stage multi-attribute group decision-making framework that incorporates public participation and has been successfully applied in a case study. The results demonstrate that the framework effectively handles complex decision-making scenarios involving public participation and ranks potential WtE project sites. It can promote the integration of expert and public decision-making preferences in the site selection of WtE projects to improve the effectiveness of decision-making. In addition, sensitivity and comparative analyses confirm the framework’s feasibility and scientificity.

Originality/value

This paper provides a new research perspective for the WtE project site selection decision-making, which is beneficial for public participation to play a positive role in decision-making. It also offers a valuable reference for managers seeking to effectively implement public participation mechanisms.

Abstract

Purpose

Thin cracks on the surface, such as those found in nuclear power plant concrete structures, are difficult to identify because they tend to be thin. This paper aims to design a novel segmentation network, called U-shaped contextual aggregation network (UCAN), for better recognition of weak cracks.

Design/methodology/approach

UCAN uses dilated convolutional layers with exponentially changing dilation rates to extract additional contextual features of thin cracks while preserving resolution. Furthermore, this paper has developed a topology-based loss function, called ℓcl Dice, which enhances the crack segmentation’s connectivity.

Findings

This paper generated five data sets with varying crack widths to evaluate the performance of multiple algorithms. The results show that the UCAN network proposed in this study achieves the highest F1-Score on thinner cracks. Additionally, training the UCAN network with the ℓcl Dice improves the F1-Scores compared to using the cross-entropy function alone. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the UCAN network and the value of incorporating the ℓcl Dice in crack segmentation tasks.

Originality/value

In this paper, an exponentially dilated convolutional layer is constructed to replace the commonly used pooling layer to improve the model receptive field. To address the challenge of preserving fracture connectivity segmentation, this paper introduces ℓcl Dice. This design enables UCAN to extract more contextual features while maintaining resolution, thus improving the crack segmentation performance. The proposed method is evaluated using extensive experiments where the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between green entrepreneurship and environmental quality in selected Asian economies. The impact of green entrepreneurship dimensions, i.e. renewable energy utilization, innovation orientation, green funding and resource efficiency is empirically assessed on environmental quality. The research assists in opening the “black box” mechanism of how green entrepreneurship affects the environmental pillar of sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

An analysis of 11 Asian countries is conducted over the period from 2000 to 2019, using panel regression techniques to examine the link between green entrepreneurship dimensions and environmental quality indicators.

Findings

The findings reveal that all four dimensions of green entrepreneurship have an inverse relationship with carbon emissions and ecological footprint while showing a positive relationship with the load capacity factor. This implies that green entrepreneurship contributes positively to environmental sustainability by enhancing the ecosystem’s resilience and capacity to support life.

Practical implications

We advocate for policymakers to prioritize green entrepreneurship to stimulate innovation for energy transition and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, creating a conducive atmosphere for green entrepreneurs can spur job creation, economic growth and societal well-being, thus fostering a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

Originality/value

In this study, we adopted a multidimensional approach for measuring green entrepreneurship, which represents an advancement over existing literature that predominantly relied on renewable energy consumption to gauge the green entrepreneurship phenomenon at the macro level.

Abstract

Purpose

Providing high-quality and cost-efficient care of older people is an important development priority for many health and social care systems in the world. This paper suggests a shift from acute, episodic and reactive hospital-centered care toward longitudinal, person-centered and proactive home-centered care. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of a comprehensive development strategy for designing and providing home-centered care of older people.

Design/methodology/approach

The study design is based on qualitative research with an inductive approach. The authors study development initiatives at the national, regional and local levels of the Swedish health and social care system. The data collection methods included interviews (n = 54), meeting observations (n = 25) and document studies (n = 59).

Findings

The authors describe findings related to policy actions and system changes, attempts to achieve collaboration, integration and coordination, new forms of care offerings, characteristics of work settings at home and differences in patients' roles and participation at home and in the hospital.

Practical implications

The authors suggest home-centered care as a solution for providing person-centered and integrated care of older people and give examples of how this can be achieved.

Originality/value

The authors outline five propositions for research and development related to national policies, service modularity as a solution for customized and coordinated care, developing human resources and infrastructure for home settings, expanding services that enable older people living at home and patient co-creation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to the relationship between liquidity fluctuation trends and stocks’ expected returns.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis to study the liquidity non-linear multi-fractal characteristics of stock market and predict the future volatility trend of market liquidity with the help of potential entropy dimensional model and also consider the non-linear volatility trend of liquidity, construct a fractal momentum strategy under different sorting periods and holding periods, to test the liquidity momentum effects of Chinese stock market and, finally, compare with the traditional price momentum strategy.

Findings

The result suggests that: Chinese stock market liquidity has obvious non-linear multi-fractal characteristics; the trend entropy dimensional model can accurately predict the future volatility trend of market liquidity; significant liquidity trend momentum effects persist in the Chinese stock market, while price momentum effects exist only in the short term; a significant liquidity premium exists in the Chinese equity market; the fractal momentum strategy constructed in this paper achieves higher returns and less risk than the price momentum strategy.

Originality/value

Based on the above analysis, this paper will further construct a momentum strategy incorporating liquidity trends, i.e. fractal momentum strategy (LMP strategy), with the realistic background that Chinese stock market liquidity has non-linear multi-fractal characteristics – the main contribution of this paper is to overcome the shortcomings of existing momentum strategies, which seldom combine the trend of future liquidity fluctuations with momentum strategies, and to incorporate the real characteristics of the market.

Abstract

Purpose

In response to the issue of traditional algorithms often falling into local minima or failing to find feasible solutions in manipulator path planning. The purpose of this paper is to propose a 3D artificial moment method (3D-AMM) for obstacle avoidance for the robotic arm's end-effector.

Design/methodology/approach

A new method for constructing temporary attractive points in 3D has been introduced using the vector triple product approach, which generates the attractive moments that attract the end-effector to move toward it. Second, distance weight factorization and spatial projection methods are introduced to improve the solution of repulsive moments in multiobstacle scenarios. Third, a novel motion vector-solving mechanism is proposed to provide nonzero velocity for the end-effector to solve the problem of limiting the solution of the motion vector to a fixed coordinate plane due to dimensionality constraints.

Findings

A comparative analysis was conducted between the proposed algorithm and the existing methods, the improved artificial potential field method and the rapidly-random tree method under identical simulation conditions. The results indicate that the 3D-AMM method successfully plans paths with smoother trajectories and reduces the path length by 20.03% to 36.9%. Additionally, the experimental comparison outcomes affirm the feasibility and effectiveness of this method for obstacle avoidance in industrial scenarios.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a 3D-AMM algorithm for manipulator path planning in Cartesian space with multiple obstacles. This method effectively solves the problem of the artificial potential field method easily falling into local minimum points and the low path planning success rate of the rapidly-exploring random tree method.
