Abstract

Purpose

Promoting people’s interest in sports is not only important to sports enterprises to improve financial performance but also to the healthy development of the whole society. As virtual reality (VR) devices become more accessible and consumers’ demand for immersive experiences increases, VR advertising is gradually attracting the attention of advertisers. However, there is limited research on what situations are more suitable for VR advertising compared to traditional advertising forms in promoting people’s sport interest. This study aims to compare the influence of experiential VR advertising and informational video advertising on sport interest.

Design/methodology/approach

As sports programs are advertised not only to novices but also to experienced people, this study investigates the interaction effect of advertising type (experiential VR vs informational video) and previous experience (high vs low) on promoting sport interest. We recruited 216 participants. They were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: an experiential VR advertisement of table tennis played by using a VR headset and an informational video advertisement of table tennis watched on a PC.

Findings

The results show that experiential VR advertising generates higher sport interest than informational video advertising for those with low previous experience and vividness and presence play a sequential mediating role. For those with high previous experience, there was no significant difference between the two advertising forms.

Originality/value

The findings extend sport advertising research with different advertising types and complement the new moderator of previous experience, providing a new perspective for insight into the differences between VR advertising and video advertising.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media platforms that disseminate scientific information to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of the topic of scientific communication. Content creators in the field, as well as researchers who study the impact of scientific information online, are interested in how people react to these information resources and how they judge them. This study aims to devise a framework for extracting large social media datasets and find specific feedback to content delivery, enabling scientific content creators to gain insights into how the public perceives scientific information.

Design/methodology/approach

To collect public reactions to scientific information, the study focused on Twitter users who are doctors, researchers, science communicators or representatives of research institutes, and processed their replies for two years from the start of the pandemic. The study aimed in developing a solution powered by topic modeling enhanced by manual validation and other machine learning techniques, such as word embeddings, that is capable of filtering massive social media datasets in search of documents related to reactions to scientific communication. The architecture developed in this paper can be replicated for finding any documents related to niche topics in social media data. As a final step of our framework, we also fine-tuned a large language model to be able to perform the classification task with even more accuracy, forgoing the need of more human validation after the first step.

Findings

We provided a framework capable of receiving a large document dataset, and, with the help of with a small degree of human validation at different stages, is able to filter out documents within the corpus that are relevant to a very underrepresented niche theme inside the database, with much higher precision than traditional state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms. Performance was improved even further by the fine-tuning of a large language model based on BERT, which would allow for the use of such model to classify even larger unseen datasets in search of reactions to scientific communication without the need for further manual validation or topic modeling.

Research limitations/implications

The challenges of scientific communication are even higher with the rampant increase of misinformation in social media, and the difficulty of competing in a saturated attention economy of the social media landscape. Our study aimed at creating a solution that could be used by scientific content creators to better locate and understand constructive feedback toward their content and how it is received, which can be hidden as a minor subject between hundreds of thousands of comments. By leveraging an ensemble of techniques ranging from heuristics to state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, we created a framework that is able to detect texts related to very niche subjects in very large datasets, with just a small amount of examples of texts related to the subject being given as input.

Practical implications

With this tool, scientific content creators can sift through their social media following and quickly understand how to adapt their content to their current user’s needs and standards of content consumption.

Originality/value

This study aimed to find reactions to scientific communication in social media. We applied three methods with human intervention and compared their performance. This study shows for the first time, the topics of interest which were discussed in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the financial shared service (FSS) mode has become a well-established organizational arrangement, current information system (IS) research remains limited and mixed. The purpose of this study is to narrow research gaps in the literature on shared services from an FSS practice perspective. The following research questions guide this study: (1) what are the important antecedents of FSS implementation? (2) what is the impact of FSS implementation on firm performance?

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework and previous innovation studies, this study explores the impact of FSS implementation on firm performance. A questionnaire survey was conducted on Chinese firms using partial least squares (PLS) for data analysis.

Findings

The authors find technological, organizational and environmental factors affect the extent and depth of FSS implementation. The empirical results show that relative advantage, compatibility, top management support, managerial obstacles and competitive pressure significantly affect FSS implementation, but bandwagon pressure does not have a direct impact on it. Top management support is the most important factor, and managerial obstacles and compatibility are controllable and manageable factors for firms. The study confirms that FSS improves the financial and non-financial performance of firms significantly, and the degree of improvement in non-financial is greater than that in financial performance.

Practical implications

A comprehension of the key factors influencing FSS implementation will help companies predict weaknesses in their implementation plan and design suitable strategies to handle deployment to achieve these benefits. Managers can make a comprehensive decision regarding the long-term development of combining FSS and the suitability of companies.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the shared services implementation theory by identifying a set of theoretical factors that shape a firm's shared service implementation. This study provides empirical support to gauge the impact of FSS implementation on firm performance and provides new evidence for a shared-service payoff study. Moreover, the study extends the applicability of the TOE framework and the balanced scorecard (BSC) viewpoint to the FSS implementation field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss and propose the potential use of immersive virtual environments (IVEs) for archiving and collecting heritage gameplay activities in digital libraries, which is expected to triangulate further discussions on the said knowledge scopes.

Design/methodology/approach

The key question of this paper is, how we can preserve and revitalize fading heritage game activities in digital libraries? To answer this, the paper is going to understand the applications of IVEs in heritage studies; the use of telepresence experiences in IVEs for activity-based collection; the creation of virtual and telepresence experiences in digital libraries; and a proposed use of IVEs for archiving heritage gameplay activities.

Findings

The applications of IVEs and/or other virtual technologies have certainly been gaining positive feedback about their ability to provide vivid images of artefacts and art pieces; perform a high level of interactivity between the exhibits and visitors; enhance visitors’ sense of immersion that evoke their memories of heritage issues; facilitate visitors’ learning process in libraries; increase enjoyment in digital libraries. As mentioned in the previous section, the activity-based historical collection, for instance, the heritage gameplay activities, can be preserved and archived vividly using IVEs.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is explorative, there is no empirical result for generalization.

Originality/value

This paper aims to provide librarians with valuable insight to apply IVEs for archiving and collecting heritage gameplay activities. Setting up a new type of digital library is affected greatly by the openness of librarians, visitors’ expectations and a whole lot of things that are happening around the technological world and digital culture. This paper addresses the applications of IVEs in heritage studies, the importance of creating virtual and telepresence experiences for library visits as well as proposing the use of IVEs for archiving heritage gameplay activities.

Abstract

Purpose

With emerging technologies rapidly changing work processes, it is important to understand the skills and characteristics project managers (PMs) need to effectively manage projects in the digital era. This study determines the underlying competencies needed for digitalization among PMs in the construction industry. The study also identified the most significant competencies needed by PMs in the era of digitalization.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted for the research study was quantitative. It was founded on a thorough review of pertinent literature, which went through a pilot survey study from six project management experts in the construction industry. Based on the comment and feedback, a questionnaire survey was developed and distributed to participants through a convenience sampling technique. The data retrieved were from 100 professional PMs out of 130 questionnaires distributed in the Ghanaian construction industry. Data collected were analyzed using fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE).

Findings

Based on FSE, the three competency parameters (knowledge, skills, personal characteristics) generated significant indices indicating that all three competencies are significant among construction PMs in the digitalization era. Under the knowledge competency parameter, six sub-competencies comprising a total of 12 variables were identified. For skills, seven sub-competencies consisting of 23 variables were identified. Regarding personal attributes, six sub-competencies with 17 variables were highlighted. Under knowledge, technical knowledge was found to be the most important with an index of 4.212. For skills, leadership skills were rated highest with an index of 4.240. Regarding personal attributes, social or interpersonal skills were deemed most critical with an index of 4.199.

Practical implications

The results provide guidance to both industry and academic stakeholders. For PMs and their employers, the study highlights priority areas for competency development and training related to the era of digitalization. It also informs educational institutions on how to structure project management curricula to best prepare students for jobs of the future. This study gives more insight into the competencies that need more attention for PMs in the digitalization era. As a result, firms that adopt the identified competency will benefit from implementing digitalization in project delivery.

Originality/value

This study makes an original contribution as one of the first to empirically investigate the competencies required of construction PMs in the construction industry in the digitalization era. By focusing on the developing country context of Ghana, the study extends knowledge to an under-researched region and market. It provides a foundation for future comparative research across diverse global contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of the study was to explore the impact of health workers’ awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) on their workplace well-being, addressing a critical gap in the literature. By examining this relationship through the lens of the Job demands-resources (JD–R) model, the study aimed to provide insights into how health workers’ perceptions of AI integration in their jobs and careers could influence their informal learning behaviour and, consequently, their overall well-being in the workplace. The study’s findings could inform strategies for supporting healthcare workers during technological transformations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a quantitative research design using a survey methodology to collect data from 420 health workers across 10 hospitals in Ghana that have adopted AI technologies. The study was analysed using OLS and structural equation modelling.

Findings

The study findings revealed that health workers’ AI awareness positively impacts their informal learning behaviour at the workplace. Again, informal learning behaviour positively impacts health workers’ workplace well-being. Moreover, informal learning behaviour mediates the relationship between health workers’ AI awareness and workplace wellbeing. Furthermore, employee learning orientation was found to strengthen the effect of AI awareness on informal learning behaviour.

Research limitations/implications

While the study provides valuable insights, it is important to acknowledge its limitations. The study was conducted in a specific context (Ghanaian hospitals adopting AI), which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other healthcare settings or industries. Self-reported data from the questionnaires may be subject to response biases, and the study did not account for potential confounding factors that could influence the relationships between the variables.

Practical implications

The study offers practical implications for healthcare organizations navigating the digital transformation era. By understanding the positive impact of health workers’ AI awareness on their informal learning behaviour and well-being, organizations can prioritize initiatives that foster a learning-oriented culture and provide opportunities for informal learning. This could include implementing mentorship programs, encouraging knowledge-sharing among employees and offering training and development resources to help workers adapt to AI-driven changes. Additionally, the findings highlight the importance of promoting employee learning orientation, which can enhance the effectiveness of such initiatives.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the existing literature by addressing a relatively unexplored area – the impact of AI awareness on healthcare workers’ well-being. While previous research has focused on the potential job displacement effects of AI, this study takes a unique perspective by examining how health workers’ perceptions of AI integration can shape their informal learning behaviour and, subsequently, their workplace well-being. By drawing on the JD–R model and incorporating employee learning orientation as a moderator, the study offers a novel theoretical framework for understanding the implications of AI adoption in healthcare organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The impact of enterprise social media (ESM) on employees is not always beneficial. The constant connectivity of ESM can trigger emotional issues, threatening employees' psychological states. This study aims to explore the potential risks of ESM usage on thriving at work by examining how ESM usage affects thriving and for whom this relationship is amplified.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on Affect Event Theory, this study proposes a research model for investigating the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions of the negative impacts of different ESM usage patterns on employees' thriving at work. This study employed Smart-PLS 4.0 with structural equation modeling to analyze multi-wave survey data from 255 employees, testing the proposed model.

Findings

The results indicate the following: (1) ESM usage triggers employees' workplace fear of missing out (WFoMO), increasing their online vigilance and consequently hindering their thriving at work. (2) The impact of ESM usage on employees' WFoMO and thriving at work varies with their ambition levels, with high-ambition employees being more susceptible to negative effects and (3) Different types of ESM usage exert distinct effects on employees.

Originality/value

This study substantiates the potential negative impact of ESM usage on employees' thriving at work, contributing to the literature on the “dark side” of ESM usage and thriving at work. This study confirms the critical mediating role of emotion, offering a novel theoretical perspective on understanding the mechanisms linking ESM usage and its outcomes. Additionally, this study identifies the moderating role of employee ambition, complementing the boundary conditions of ESM usage.

Abstract

Purpose

Implementing green innovation is crucial for firms to build or sustain competitive advantages within the context of the sustainable development goals. Academic research has broadly explored how firms can induce green innovation behavior (GIB), examining external factors, but few studies in the current literature have deeply investigated unabsorbed slack as an internal antecedent of GIB. Drawing upon the behavioral theory of the firm and integrating it with dynamic capabilities theory, this study aims to address this deficiency by investigating the impact of unabsorbed slack on GIB and the mediating roles of two dimensions of capability reconfiguration: capability evolution and capability substitution in the relationship between unabsorbed slack and GIB. Furthermore, this study also discusses the moderating effects of consumer green pressure on the relationship between unabsorbed slack and capability evolution/substitution.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from 286 Chinese technology-intensive manufacturing firms to empirically test the relationships among the variables.

Findings

The results reveal that unabsorbed slack has a positive influence on GIB. Furthermore, capability evolution and substitution both play mediating roles in the relationship between unabsorbed slack and GIB. Comparative analysis showed that the mediating effect of capability substitution is stronger than that of capability evolution. Moreover, consumer green pressure strengthens the positive relationship between unabsorbed slack and capability evolution/substitution.

Originality/value

This study enriches the research on the driving forces of GIB and contributes to providing managerial implications for firms to launch green innovation activities.

Abstract

Purpose

Finite element analysis of underwater transducers typically requires a high level of expertise, and the iterative process of testing various sizes, material parameters and other factors is often inefficient. To address this challenge, this paper aims to introduce underwater transducer parametric simulation (UTPS) software to streamline the design and optimization process.

Design/methodology/approach

The design methodology integrates the strengths of ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) for parametric design with the Qt Creator framework for developing a visual interface. C++ is used to encapsulate complex, hard-to-master APDL macros and interact with ANSYS software to execute the relevant APDL macros, performing finite element analysis on the underwater transducer in the background. The results are then processed and displayed on the visual interface.

Findings

UTPS enables parametric modeling, modal analysis, harmonic response analysis and directivity analysis of underwater transducers. Users only need to input parameters into the software interface to obtain the transducer’s performance, significantly improving work efficiency and lowering the professional threshold. A prototype transducer was fabricated and tested based on UTPS results, which confirmed the accuracy of the software.

Originality/value

This paper presents an innovative parametric simulation tool for underwater transducers, combining finite element analysis and APDL to simplify and expedite the design process. UTPS reduces the need for specialized knowledge, cutting down on training costs, while its parametric design capabilities accelerate the design process, saving resources.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to reduce the impact of noise on the prediction accuracy of remaining useful life (RUL) for supercapacitor. First, Savitzky–Golay (SG) smoothing filter method (Savitzky and Golay, 1964) is used to eliminate the local small fluctuation and high-frequency noises that are generated by the capacity drop and rebound during the charging and discharging process of supercapacitor. Then, the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method is used to eliminate large fluctuation noises that are caused by internal temperature change of supercapacitor and chemical reaction of the supercapacitor. Its parameters are optimized by using marine predators algorithm (MPA), and the capacity sequence after denoising is reconstructed. Finally, long short term memory neural networks (LSTM) is used to predict the performance degradation law (PDL) and remaining useful life (RUL) of supercapacitor for the reconstructed sequence, then the comparative analysis is conducted with other methods, which results show this method improves the prediction accuracy effectively, and provides theoretical support for timely and accurately understanding the PDL and RUL of supercapacitor backup power supply.

Design/methodology/approach

Findings

These factors will bring different types of noise during the service process of supercapacitor backup power supply, such as capacity regeneration, differences of charging and discharging rate, internal temperature change of supercapacitor, chemical reaction and external electromagnetic interference. Therefore, the paper proposes an LSTM prediction method of supercapacitor’s PDL and RUL based on composite denoising, which is divided into three stages: smoothing, noise reduction and prediction. First, SG smoothing filter method is used to eliminate the local small fluctuation and high-frequency noises, and MPA-VMD method is used to eliminate the nonlinear and nonstationary noises. Then, the capacity sequence after denoising is reconstructed, LSTM is used to predict PDL and RUL of supercapacitor. Finally, the comparative analysis with other methods is carried out. The results show that SG-VMD-LSTM method has higher prediction accuracy, which can accurately predict PDL and RUL of supercapacitor backup power supply, and improve the safety and reliability of wind turbine operation under the severe wind conditions.
