Abstract

Purpose

We evaluate the effect of political connections on the stock valuation of emerging market firms following the announcement of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As). We further analyze the moderating roles of home and host market environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Our analysis of 361 Chinese cross-border M&A transactions during 2014–2018 employs an event-study methodology to assess the cumulative abnormal return (CAR) for acquirers. To test our hypotheses, we utilize a multiple regression model.

Findings

Politically connected firms experience a decrease in firm value following the announcement of cross-border M&As. However, this negative effect is weakened when the firm’s home region is more market-oriented, reflected by economic activity driven primarily by market mechanisms rather than government intervention. In contrast, the negative effect is strengthened when the host country exhibits higher governance quality, characterized by sound legal structures, labor regulations and developed capital markets.

Originality/value

Extending beyond previous studies on cross-border M&A performance, we analyze firm value based on signaling theory. Our findings reveal that market investors view cross-border M&As undertaken by politically connected firms from emerging economies with caution, resulting in a decline in acquirer value. Moreover, investors react more positively to cross-border M&As by politically connected acquirers in truly market-based regions. Conversely, investors expect that politically connected acquirers would encounter additional hurdles when executing cross-border M&As if the host country has high-quality governance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to fabricate the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composite films with electric-driven two-way shape memory properties for deployable structures application. The effect of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and rGO on the structure and properties of the rGO/EVA composite films were systematically investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

The rGO/EVA composite films were fabricated by melting blend and swelling-ultrasonication method, DCP and rGO were used the crosslinking agent and conductive filler, respectively.

Findings

The research results indicate that the two-way shape memory properties of rGO/EVA composite films were significantly improved with the increase of DCP content. The rGO endowed rGO/EVA composite films with excellent electric-driven reversible two-way shape memory and anti-ultraviolet aging properties. The sample rGO/EVA-9 can be heated above Tm within 8 s at a voltage of 35 V and can be heated above the Tm temperature within 12 s under near-infrared light (NIR). Under a constant stress of 0.07 MPa, the reversible strain of the sample rGO/EVA-9 was 8.96% and its electric-driven shape memory behavior maintained great regularity and stability.

Research limitations/implications

The rGO/EVA composite films have potential application value in the field of deployable structures.

Originality/value

With the increase of DCP content, the two-way shape memory properties of rGO/EVA composite films were significantly improved, which effectively solved the problem that the shape memory properties of EVA matrix decreased caused by swelling. The rGO endowed rGO/EVA composite films with excellent electric/NIR driven reversible two-way shape memory properties.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the dynamics of knowledge hiding (KH) within group settings, focusing on both the experiences of those who hide knowledge and the perceptions of their group members.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory study was conducted with 49 undergraduate business students who participated in group-based problem-solving tasks. Some participants were assigned the role of “knowledge hiders.” Data were gathered through observations, pre- and posttask surveys and in-depth interviews. The analysis included quantitative and qualitative approaches, with thematic analysis applied to the qualitative data.

Findings

This study identified complex emotional responses among knowledge hiders, including guilt and cognitive conflict, moderated by social context. Hiders used various strategies, including evasive hiding, playing dumb and misdirection. Interestingly, targets often misinterpreted KH behaviors, attributing them to disinterest or discomfort rather than intentional withholding.

Research limitations/implications

The controlled setting and short-term interactions may limit generalizability to organizational contexts. Future research should explore the long-term consequences of KH and its occurrence in diverse environments.

Practical implications

Organizations may benefit from addressing the underlying causes of KH, such as communication issues and weak social connections, rather than solely focusing on eliminating KH behaviors. Understanding the subtle nature of KH could lead to more effective interventions in fostering open knowledge-sharing cultures.

Originality/value

The dual perspective – examining both the hiders’ and targets’ experiences – adds a novel dimension to the KH literature. The findings challenge the assumption that KH always leads to negative outcomes, like mistrust or group conflict, and emphasize how KH is often misperceived in group interactions.

This paper explores the linkage of digital infrastructure to the cost of debt.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores the linkage of digital infrastructure to the cost of debt.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the implementation of the “Broadband China” policy that improves digital infrastructure as an exogenous shock and exploits the difference-in-differences method (DID).

Findings

Empirical analyses show that digital infrastructure leads to increased firms’ borrowing costs, which is robust to several robustness checks. In addition, we find that this unfavourable effect can be attributed to intensified market competition led by digital infrastructure construction. Cross-sectional analysis shows that this effect is greater for non-SOEs and smaller firms. Finally, we offer additional evidence of the unfavourable effect by showing that digital infrastructure construction leads to decreased fundamentals.

Originality/value

Our paper unveils how digital infrastructure construction affects firms’ business strategy in using private debts and extends the determinants of firms’ borrowing costs.

Abstract

Purpose

With a host of changes being driven by automation, digitalization and robotization, every business today comprises some digital aspect. Possessing digital skills is key for staying employable. Because digital skill requirements of employers are constantly being redefined, an alignment between industry and academia is necessary to develop a workforce that can promote economic growth and societal welfare. This study aims to analyse the differences in employer expectations as compared to management graduates’ perceptions regarding the digital skills and abilities necessary for human resources to be employable.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative content analysis techniques have been used to demonstrate the thematic convergence of data collected using focus groups. A series of seven focus groups were conducted with two respondent groups – HR professionals (n = 26) and final-year postgraduate management students (n = 32). NVivo was used to analyze the transcripts.

Findings

The findings establish a qualitative hierarchy of 15 digital skills necessary for management graduates to be employable. These have been mapped onto the typology of managerial skills (technical, human and conceptual) given by Katz (1955). The salience of the themes identified varies significantly across the two respondent groups.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in establishing a qualitative hierarchy of digital skills essential to be employable. By mapping the differences in management graduates’ understanding of employability and HR expectations regarding digital skills, the study generates new insights for examining the student-job fit.

This study aims to empirically examine the impact of digital finance on spatial urbanization and elucidate its underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically examine the impact of digital finance on spatial urbanization and elucidate its underlying mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

Using panel data of Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2021, and using a spatial dynamic panel model, the authors analyzed the effects of digital finance on spatial urbanization and the mechanism of its action.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal that digital finance, along with its sub-dimensions, namely coverage breadth, usage depth and digitization degree, all contribute to the enhancement of spatial urbanization. The information channel effect generated by the development of postal and telecommunication businesses, the goods delivery effect generated by the development of retail businesses and the wealth accumulation effect generated by the accumulation of household wealth are all important channels through which digital finance promotes spatial urbanization. Digital finance exerts a significant promotional effect on spatial urbanization in second-tier cities, third-tier cities and their subsequent tiers. This observation alludes to the regionally inclusive nature of spatial urbanization promotion facilitated by digital finance.

Originality/value

The present study endeavors to fill this void by employing empirical analysis to investigate the ramifications of digital finance on spatial urbanization, thereby shedding light on the pivotal role played by digital finance in expediting the progression of spatial urbanization. This study undertakes an examination of the spatial spillover effects, thus providing a comprehensive exposition of the influence of digital finance on spatial urbanization. This study introduces this crucial dimension, and the empirical findings elucidate that digital finance fosters the evolution of spatial urbanization by broadening the coverage of information channels, augmenting the efficiency of goods distribution and enhancing wealth accumulation efficacy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of Cu-containing 3Ni steel in simulated marine environments and to provide basic guidance for improving the corrosion resistance of marine high-strength steels.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion properties of Cu-containing 3Ni steel were evaluated in five different NaCl concentrations by alternating wet and dry cycling method. The corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanism of the influence of Cl ion concentrations on the corrosion behavior of Cu-containing 3Ni steel in marine environments was analyzed.

Findings

The results showed that the corrosion resistance of Cu-containing 3Ni steel decreased with NaCl concentration increasing. With the increase of NaCl concentration, the number of FeOOH particles decreased and their size increased, resulting in an increase in the porosity and a decrease in the density of corrosion products. High NaCl concentration could inhibit the formation of NiFe2O4 and disrupt the electronegativity of the inner film of corrosion products, which further weakened the enrichment of Ni and Cu, and enhanced the permeability of Cl ions.

Originality/value

The influence of NaCl concentrations on the corrosion behavior of Cu-containing 3Ni steel was systematically studied and the influence laws of corrosion behavior were obtained in this paper, providing basic data for the optimal design of Cu-containing 3Ni steels.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the moral licensing theory, this study aims to reveal the mechanism of self-sacrificial leadership inducing abusive supervision from two paths of leader moral credit and leader moral credential. At the same time, it also discusses the moderating effect of leader behavioral integrity on the two paths.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, 434 employees and their direct leaders from six Chinese companies were investigated in a paired survey at three time points, and the empirical data was analyzed using Mplus 7.4 software.

Findings

Self-sacrificial leadership has a positive effect on leader abusive supervision through the mediating role of leader moral credit and leader moral credential. In addition, this study also finds that leader behavioral integrity is the “gate” for self-sacrificial leadership to promote abusive supervision, and the leader behavioral integrity has a moderating effect on the process of self-sacrificial leadership influencing on leader moral credit and leader moral credential.

Originality/value

This study explores the evolution of self-sacrificial leadership from “good” to “bad” from the perspective of moral licensing and broadens the research on the mechanism and boundary conditions of self-sacrificial leadership. At the same time, it also provides important reference value for preventing the negative effects of self-sacrificial leadership in organizations.
