Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to strengthen the connection between therapeutic built environments and tourism research and practice. While there is evidence in the importance of the Built Environment (BE) of cities, workspaces and health-care facilities to health, the BE of facilities for tourism in relation to health remains relatively unexplored.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper conducts an exploratory search on architecture and tourism BE and narrowed it down to a scoping review on wellness tourism and architectural health impacts from 2010 to 2024. This would highlight lessons learned from the field of medical architecture, i.e. a cross-disciplinary field combining BE research, public health and health-care services research, to explore potential synergies of cross-pollination with the field of hospitality and medical architecture.
Findings
Principles and theories of medical architecture can be incorporated into the BE of wellness hospitality, tourism for ageing and pandemic preparedness.
Originality/value
The paper sets the basis of a novel cross-disciplinary collaboration between therapeutic architecture and hospitality for increasing the societal impact of the latter. This is particularly important in a post-Covid and an ageing society.

Objetivo
Este documento pretende reforzar la conexión entre los entornos construidos terapéuticos y la investigación y la práctica del turismo. Aunque existen pruebas de la importancia del entorno construido (EC) de las ciudades, los espacios de trabajo y las instalaciones sanitarias para la salud, el EC de las instalaciones para el turismo en relación con la salud sigue estando relativamente inexplorado.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Realizamos una búsqueda exploratoria sobre arquitectura y el EC turístico y la acotamos a una revisión de alcance sobre el turismo de bienestar y los impactos arquitectónicos en la salud desde 2010 hasta 2024. Esto pondría de relieve las lecciones aprendidas en el campo de la arquitectura médica, es decir, un campo interdisciplinar que combina la investigación de la EC, la salud pública y la investigación de los servicios sanitarios, para explorar posibles sinergias de polinización cruzada con el campo de la hostelería y la arquitectura médica.
Resultados
Los principios y teorías de la arquitectura médica pueden incorporarse a la EC de la hosteleria para el bienestar, el turismo para el envejecimiento y la preparación ante pandemias.
Originalidad/valor
Sentamos las bases de una novedosa colaboración interdisciplinar entre la arquitectura terapéutica y la hostelería para aumentar el impacto social de esta última. Esto es especialmente importante después de la crisis y en una sociedad que envejece.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to understand how critical care pharmacists (CCPs) coped during the COVID-19 crisis by investigating what sense-making and leadership processes were evident during the crisis.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from ten semi-structured interviews of lead CCPs across different National Health Service organisations in the UK was analysed through a thematic process.
Findings
The findings identified that strong pre-existing relationships and high levels of trust play a significant role in successfully navigating a crisis. Four sense-making processes seem important to building and maintaining these relationships and trust, namely, identifying cues for change; authoring and labelling; interpretation and storytelling; negotiation and deliberation.
Originality/value
The research also highlights the need for organisations to acknowledge the leadership roles undertaken by CCP teams and leverage this role by investing in leadership training, thereby increasing resilience and preparedness for future storms or crises on the horizon.

Abstract
Purpose
Mothers sharing images and information on social media about their children is a contemporary cultural norm. While the practice has been heavily discussed in popular media, there is a lack of empirical research examining the phenomenon from the perspectives of parents and adolescent children in China. The current study aims to find out whether or not mothers and their children engage in discussions about sharenting and how adolescents negotiate their privacy concerns with their mothers.
Design/methodology/approach
The current study examined how parents and their children make sense of sharenting via semi-structured interviews with 16 Chinese mothers. In addition, the study enlisted 21 adolescents to examine their perspectives on sharenting. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
Findings
Results showed that although documentation is articulated as the primary sharenting motivation, identity management is a major drive behind sharenting. The dynamics between mothers and their children, as well as between adolescents and their parents, are also explored regarding the issues of consent, privacy and identity.
Research limitations/implications
This study has theoretical implications for the communication privacy management (CPM) theory, as it underscores the dynamic nature of privacy management, shaped by cultural norms, family dynamics and evolving communication technologies. It also adds value for campaign practitioners to provide education programs on the serious consequences of sharenting.
Originality/value
This research serves as a starting point to further explore a child’s entrance to adulthood as our culture’s first true digital natives who will bear extensive online and offline identities.

Purpose
Drawing on broaden and build theory and the job demands–resources (JD–R) perspective, this study aims to test a moderated mediation model to explain the mediating effect of knowledge sharing behavior and the moderating role of perceived organizational obstruction on the dynamics of work engagement and creative effort.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from 497 banking service employees constitute the sample of the study, and PROCESS macro in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The positive impact of work engagement on creative effort is mediated by knowledge sharing behavior and the direct effect of work engagement on creative effort and the mediating effect of knowledge sharing behavior are contingent on perceived organizational obstruction. These effects were weaker for employees who experienced high perceived organizational obstruction.
Originality/value
This work unfolds how and when work engagement impacts the creative efforts of banking sector employees, highlighting when engaged work matters the most. It provides bidirectional richness at the intersection of knowledge management and creativity literature by focusing on the banking industry of a developing country.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates the influence of intellectual capital (IC) efficiency and its components – human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency (SCE) and capital employed efficiency (CEE) – on the growth paths of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their likelihood of becoming high-growth firms (HGFs).
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV), our study reveals a positive relationship between IC efficiency and the likelihood of becoming HGFs. Using a longitudinal dataset of 554,076 firm-year observations corresponding to approximately 79,158 European SMEs from 2012–2019, our study employs probit regression to examine the impact of IC efficiency on the probability of becoming an HGF. To investigate the impact of IC efficiency across the growth rate distribution, we conduct further analyses via generalized least squares.
Findings
The results show that IC efficiency positively influences the growth paths of small entrepreneurial ventures and their likelihood of experiencing high-growth episodes.
Practical implications
For practitioners, the findings underscore the importance of investing in IC to enhance the growth process of entrepreneurial firms and increase their likelihood of achieving HGF status. Investments in IC can maximize growth potential and competitiveness, informing strategic decision-making.
Social implications
Policymakers should consider the critical role of IC in promoting SME growth and formulate policies that encourage the development of IC among entrepreneurial firms. Such initiatives can stimulate economic growth, innovation and job creation across European economies.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by focusing on entrepreneurial firms and examining how IC efficiency drives their transition to HGF status. This study provides empirical evidence across several European contexts over an extended period, emphasizing the role of IC efficiency in shaping the growth paths of entrepreneurial firms.

Purpose
We conducted a content analysis on nine historical fiction books representing Chinese history to examine character traits in relation to the historical events and genders.
Design/methodology/approach
We employed content analysis as the research approach to analyze the verbal texts and visual displays of the selected historical fiction.
Findings
Our findings revealed that (1) characters from the similar historical context shared certain common traits and (2) character traits were portrayed in gender-specific ways but were also influenced by familial, social and historical contexts. These findings illustrate the interconnectedness of historical contexts and gender in the development of character traits in historical fiction.
Originality/value
Our study extends the scope of content analysis of historical fiction by examining characters situated in social, cultural and historical contexts and providing a comprehensive understanding of gender portrayal in historical narratives.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the research is to investigate the impact of affective and emotional experiences on organizational learning in highly dynamic and chaotic environments, specifically in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on an intensive 12-month inductive study, 24-project managers and 16 team members from biopharmaceutical organizations were interviewed and a thematic analysis was conducted.
Findings
Three themes emerged from the findings: (1) developing affective maturity as a socio-emotional resource, (2) mixed-motive emotional dynamics and (3) meaning-oriented organizational identification and commitment. The context of the COVID-19 crisis provided an unconventional performance environment.
Research limitations/implications
Our study has several limitations, offering avenues for future research. Firstly, our focus on biopharmaceutical organizations, with their unique socio-cultural influences and management styles, may limit the generalizability of our findings to other sectors and institutional contexts. However, regulatory mechanisms in this sector may align with knowledge-based sectors, emphasizing the influence of organizational values and best practices. Secondly, our reliance on a posteriori interview data limits real-time observation of organizational learning (OL) processes. Future research could employ diverse data sources and survey methods for corroboration. Additionally, cross-cultural studies might explore how different societies respond to crises. Multi-level perspectives could also enhance understanding of affective experiences and their impact on OL outcomes.
Originality/value
The study contributes new insights into OL through its focus on how affective experiences and affective organizing efforts shape OL. We offer a novel and emergent theoretical model of OL in the context of trauma which has implications for organizations particularly in the areas of information processing and decision-making.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to evaluate the measurement properties of the Employee Perception to Assess the Lean Implementation Tool (EPLIT) in the Brazilian hospital context.
Design/methodology/approach
A cross-sectional study was conducted in two Brazilian hospitals, adhering to COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guidelines. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Cronbach's alpha were used for construct validity and reliability.
Findings
The adapted tool comprises 27 items across five domains, explaining 63.3% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.78 to 0.86, indicating satisfactory reliability.
Research limitations/implications
Limitations include convenience sampling and exclusive use of EFA for validation. Future studies may employ Confirmatory Factor Analysis for further validation.
Practical implications
The tool aids healthcare managers in Brazil to systematically evaluate Lean implementation, contributing to process optimization and quality improvement.
Social implications
Effective Lean implementation using the validated tool could lead to improved healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
Originality/value
This is the first study to adapt and validate EPLIT for the Brazilian healthcare sector, offering a robust tool for managers and researchers.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on social exchange and street-level bureaucracy (SLB) theories, the authors of the present paper seek to identify how public banks in Egypt strategically manage their frontline employees to maintain high performance even during periods of economic uncertainty.
Design/methodology/approach
The empirical sample comprises semi-structured interviews with 28 frontline employees working in 4 public banks. The authors used the Gioia mechanism to analyze their data.
Findings
The authors identified job-related (discretionary power of bank employees, nature of banking jobs and hiring elite individuals for banking jobs); learning-related (continuous learning of bank employees, spread of MBA programs and resilience of bank employees) and context-related categories of factors (career support and more financial rewards during economic uncertainty) that explain the stability of the performance of the frontline bank employees addressed in this study despite the economic uncertainty their country is passing through.
Practical implications
Given the findings of the present paper, the authors propose that the administration of the addressed banks maintain the policy of providing training opportunities to their employees. However, such training should pay more attention to issues such as crisis management, customer-employee engagement and the mental health of employees during crises, among others. Second, as dissatisfaction is very high with other public sector organizations in Egypt, their top management should try to learn from public banks, follow the best practices and collaborate with them to improve their service offerings to the citizens. Finally, for global financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund who are involved in rescuing Egyptian economy should incorporate strategic human resources management implementation in public sector organizations in their recommendations, along with economic reforms package.
Originality/value
This paper contributes by filling a gap in the literature on strategic human resources management and economic uncertainty in which empirical studies of the association between them, particularly in the context of North African countries such as Egypt, have been limited so far.

Abstract
Purpose
This review paper examines the germaneness of libraries in sustaining information technology services, rethinking towards implementing futuristic strategies and the significant sustainability factors related to information technology (IT) services, identifying gaps in the existing studies and suggesting future areas of research work.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopted a systematic literature review (SLR), in which 81 articles were identified and utilised for the paper. The inclusion and exclusion research design was used for the study.
Findings
The role of libraries in sustaining information technology services is increasingly crucial as they evolve into dynamic IT hubs, addressing the growing digital needs of users. This transformation involves integrating advanced technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning to enhance access and usability of information. Libraries support academic research and education by offering extensive digital archives and research databases, thereby fostering innovation and learning. They also play a vital role in community engagement by providing digital literacy programs and IT training, thus bridging the digital divide. Embracing sustainable IT practices and adapting to technological advancements ensure that libraries remain relevant and effective. However, these initiatives require significant investment in infrastructure and continuous staff training. The results highlight the complexity of maintaining sustainable library IT services and support an active, cooperative, and user-centred strategy.
Research limitations/implications
Despite the importance of libraries in providing IT services, there is a lack of research on the germaneness of libraries in sustaining IT services (DSpace, 2022). The number of research publications on these topics has grown since the late 1990s and is increasing. However, contrary to the vast number of research publications, there are few literature reviews on libraries’ sustainability and information technology. Moreover, little is known about the germaneness of libraries in sustaining IT services.
Originality/value
Libraries’ roles in sustaining IT services and implementing futuristic strategies underscore their evolving importance in contemporary society. Libraries are not just centres of learning but are integral to community development, technological advancement and social inclusion. Rethinking and innovating their approach to IT services, libraries continue to serve as vital hubs of development and engagement, significantly benefiting communities worldwide. Furthermore, by addressing a significant research issue, creating creative solutions, stressing teamwork and supporting an all-encompassing strategy for maintaining library IT services. It is a stimulant for more study and cooperative initiatives to achieve sustainable library and information science development.
