Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the interplay between flood risk, financial constraints and buyer behavior in the housing market. It aims to discern how flood experience influences housing choices, particularly among financially constrained buyers.

Design/methodology/approach

Using hedonic pricing models and probit analysis, this research examines the implicit prices of house characteristics and evaluates the determinants of housing choices, considering factors such as flood risk, financial status and past flood experience.

Findings

The study underscores that lower house prices incentivize buyers to opt for homes in flood-prone areas, thereby increasing their vulnerability to flood risks. Consequently, financial constraints exacerbate this situation, compelling low-income buyers to accept higher flood risks. However, flood experience fosters risk awareness among buyers, encouraging them to steer clear of flood-prone areas, albeit with lesser efficacy among financially constrained individuals.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the understanding of how flood risk and financial limitations shape housing decisions. It highlights the role of flood experience in influencing buyer behavior and emphasizes the need for targeted policies to mitigate flood-related risks in the housing market, particularly among economically vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores how blockchain technology can enhance information quality within project management information systems (PMIS), thereby positively affecting knowledge management, learning capabilities and project portfolio success.

Design/methodology/approach

We employ a literature review and a theory-based approach to develop a conceptual framework and set of propositions that integrate key principles from blockchain technology, project management and dynamic capabilities theory. Subsequently, a focus group is conducted to refine our propositions, providing insights and examples demonstrating the potential value of blockchain in project management.

Findings

The findings suggest that blockchain significantly impacts the information quality within PMIS. This improvement in information quality enhances traceability, reliability and security of project data, facilitating better decision-making and governance. The focus group revealed blockchain’s benefits in managing confidential data and streamlining knowledge sharing processes, ultimately contributing to project portfolio success.

Originality/value

This research offers a novel conceptual framework and original insights into the application of blockchain in project management, particularly within the context of Industry 4.0, paving the way for future research on digital transformation in project management.

Abstract

Purpose

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have far-reaching consequences on an individual’s physical, mental and social well-being. As the world grappled with the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the impact of ACEs on social well-being became more crucial than ever. This study aims to investigate the causal effect of ACEs on perceived social well-being during the pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

An instrumental variable design was carried out on data extracted from the Panel Study of Income dynamic (PSID).

Findings

This study found a significant causal link between higher levels of ACEs and diminished social well-being, after controlling COVID-19 exposure and symptom severity. Surprisingly, the findings suggest that COVID-19 exposure and symptom severity had no significant impact on social well-being during the pandemic.

Originality/value

These results underscore the enduring influence of childhood adversity on an individual’s ability to form and maintain healthy social connections, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support systems that promote resilience and social well-being among individuals with a history of ACEs. As we navigate the postpandemic era, this study emphasizes the importance of addressing the long-lasting effects of childhood trauma to foster a more resilient and supportive society.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of psychosocial entitlement on workplace deviance, particularly in contexts marked by increased job autonomy. Additionally, this study delves into the organizational factors, including perceived support and justice, which play a crucial role in this dynamic.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying social exchange theory (SET), this study contends that fostering a fair and supportive workplace can deter entitled employees from workplace deviance. This study used time-lagged, multi-source data to analyse the interplay between psychological entitlement and workplace deviance in the presence of job autonomy and to assess the influence of perceived organizational justice and support. This study’s analysis uses SmartPLS for partial least square-structural equation modelling.

Findings

The study’s results indicate an elevated sense of entitlement among employees working autonomously and a heightened propensity for deviant behaviour when psychological entitlement increases. Yet, the data revealed moderating effects of perceived organizational support on the relationship between psychological entitlement and workplace deviance. A post hoc analysis found full mediation effects by psychological entitlement on the relationship between perceived organizational justice and workplace deviance.

Research limitations/implications

To enhance organizational dynamics, management should prioritize promoting employee perceptions of organizational justice and support through impartial human resource policies, consistent policy implementation, initiatives such as virtual learning, improved mental health benefits and measurement tools for feedback on justice and support measures.

Originality/value

An essential theoretical contribution of this research resides in its extension beyond the conventional application of SET, traditionally associated with reciprocity in the workplace. This study showcases its effectiveness in elucidating the impact of psychosocial factors on reciprocity in organizational dynamics.
