This study aims to investigate whether the changes in gender composition of bank board affects Vietnamese bank stability efficiency.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate whether the changes in gender composition of bank board affects Vietnamese bank stability efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach
This research covers a panel of 27 commercial banks in Vietnam over a 14-year period from 2007 to 2020. The two-step system generalized method of moments is used to estimate the gender diversity–Vietnamese bank stability efficiency nexus.
Findings
The authors find that a greater degree of board gender diversification enhances bank stability efficiency and reduces bank risk-taking in Vietnam. The relationship between gender diversity and the stability efficiency of Vietnamese banks is still valid under the influence of regulatory capital sufficiency and during the financial crisis. These findings are robust to alternative proxies for risk indicators and consistent with the perspectives of stakeholder and behavior theory.
Originality/value
Although this research revisits the relationship between gender diversity and bank risk-taking, it is the first attempt to explore the role of women on board in enhancing the stability efficiency of banks, using the stochastic frontier approach. These findings shed light on the function of gender diversity as a governance instrument for mitigating risk in an emerging market context.

Abstract
Purpose
Customer incivility is a crucial issue that has multiple negative effects on organizations, especially in the hospitality industry. This study identified the antecedents of customer incivility and investigated its outcomes on frontline employees (FLEs) in the emerging market of Vietnam.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a quantitative methodology featuring interviews with 476 FLEs who frequently experienced customer incivility in Vietnamese restaurants and hotels. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The findings demonstrated four antecedents of customer incivility (training/knowledge, FLE incivility, service orientation, and environment) and three outcomes (revenge motivation, service sabotage, and turnover intention), as well as the mediating role of revenge motivation.
Practical implications
Managers can establish and upgrade training lessons with different syllabi for numerous FLE groups to improve staff perceptions and enhance the organization’s service orientation and environment, which can support the minimization of revenge motivation, service sabotage, and turnover intention among frontline staff members.
Originality/value
This study highlights how impactful customer incivility is and how to eliminate it by clarifying its origins and effects in Vietnamese hotel and restaurant organizations.

This study explores the effect of local budget retention rate changes (RER) on total factor productivity (TFP) and its components in Vietnam.
Abstract
Purpose
This study explores the effect of local budget retention rate changes (RER) on total factor productivity (TFP) and its components in Vietnam.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a two-system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator and data from 2012 to 2019 across all 63 provinces/cities of Vietnam.
Findings
The study finds that local budget retention rates significantly influence public investment, affecting scale and allocation efficiency. The reallocation of budgets between regions and from the central government to local levels incurs certain costs, often resulting in economically robust provinces experiencing reductions in their retention rates.
Practical implications
Recognizing the challenges of immediate structural budget changes due to cultural and historical factors, the study suggests a more gradual policy approach. It emphasizes the importance of policy predictability, as abrupt reductions in the retention rate lead to higher costs than gradual reductions, thus implementing budget policies with a clearer timeline. This study provides insight into local budget allocation regimes and their impact on productivity in transitioning countries.
Originality/value
First, the study provides fresh evidence of the impact of retention rate changes on TFP and its components in Vietnam. Second, the study provides insights into the mechanisms of the nexus of increased budget spending, capital efficiency and, most importantly, attaining improvement in education. We also offer further insights into inefficient budget allocation agents in Vietnam, especially in large cities, which should alert scholars to explore this topic further in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
The study investigates determinants of willingness to pay (WTP) for laser land leveling (LLL) technology, its demand heterogeneity across individual farmers and plot characteristics and the technology's empirical impact on paddy productivity.
Design/methodology/approach
The study applies the Becker-DeGroote, Marschak style to elicit the WTP for LLL technology and the Cragg model to examine the determinants of the WTP to capture both the demand decision and affordability. The randomized controlled trials (RCT) are incorporated with a production function model to analyze the technology effects on paddy productivity.
Findings
The Cragg model finds that the key demographic and behavioral traits such as age, extension services and risk acceptance significantly influence the adoption decision; however, the plot area, bank and financial capacity become predominant factors in the adoption affordability. The LLL treatment effect results in a statistically significant increase in paddy yield of 6.48%, equivalent to 492,138 kg ha-1.
Research limitations/implications
The analysis underscores the factor complexity, illustrating that the LLL-promoting interventions need to address both the adoption barriers and the enablers for greater affordability. A composite of climate-smart agricultural programs should be employed to facilitate the LLL adoption. The empirical evidence highlights the positive effect on agricultural productivity, potentially offering a significant boost to output and farmer income.
Originality/value
The study contributes to existing literature by analyzing the heterogeneous demand for LLL technology with two distinguishable features of the paddy mono-cropping system and land fragmentation and by incorporating the RCTs alongside a production function for the effects on paddy productivity.
