Abstract
Purpose
Chatbots are increasingly embodied in business and IS contexts to enhance customer and user experience. Despite wide interest in chatbots among business and IS academics, surprisingly, there are no current comprehensive reviews to reveal the knowledge structure of chatbot research in such areas.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employed a mixed-method approach that combines systematic review and bibliometric analysis to provide a comprehensive synthesis of chatbot research. The sample was obtained in December 2023 after searching across six databases: EBSCOhost, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, ACM Digital Library and IEEE Computer Society Digital Library.
Findings
This study reveals the major trend in publication trends, countries, article performance and cluster distribution of chatbot research. We also identify the key themes of chatbot research, which mainly focus on how users interact with chatbots and their consequences, such as users’ cognition and behavior. Moreover, several important research agendas have been discussed to address some limitations in the current chatbot research in business and IS fields.
Originality/value
The present review is one of the first attempts to systematically reveal the ongoing knowledge map of chatbots in business and IS fields, which makes important contributions and provides useful resources for future chatbot research and practice.

Abstract
Purpose
State-owned enterprises (SOEs) play an immense role throughout the world. Historically lacking in innovativeness, SOEs are now compelled to be more innovative. This study aims to explore the innovative tendencies of SOEs and non-SOEs as they strive to be preferred suppliers to their key accounts. This study also examines the effects of top management involvement (TMI) and customer knowledge utilization on suppliers’ tendencies to provide innovative solutions to key customers. In addition, this study examines the moderating effects of state ownership on these relationships.
Design/methodology/approach
Following institutional theory and dynamic capabilities logic to guide expectations, this study collected survey responses from 185 managers at SOEs and non-SOEs in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling, this study examined main and moderating effects of variables on innovation.
Findings
Results indicate that state ownership does not have a significant effect on innovation, suggesting Chinese SOEs may no longer be innovation-disadvantaged vis-à-vis non-SOEs. In addition, both TMI and customer knowledge utilization have positive effects on innovation. The hypothesized magnifying effect of state ownership on TMI’s main effect is not present. Data support our expectation that state ownership amplifies the positive effect of customer knowledge utilization on innovation.
Research limitations/implications
Our research provides evidence that China’s SOEs are closing the competitive gap in innovation and mechanisms for this occurrence. The relatively small sample from limited geographies necessitates research in more regions of China. Also, research should investigate not just the ownership type of suppliers, but also of buyers.
Originality/value
This study offers unique insights into factors affecting the innovative tendencies of Chinese SOEs and non-SOEs. Until now, little research has addressed what practices SOEs use to provide more innovative solutions to customers.

Abstract
Purpose
This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of the interdisciplinary literature on drones in last-mile delivery (LMD) to extrapolate pertinent insights from and into the logistics management field.
Design/methodology/approach
Rooting their analytical categories in the LMD literature, the authors performed a deductive, theory refinement SLR on 307 interdisciplinary journal articles published during 2015–2022 to integrate this emergent phenomenon into the field.
Findings
The authors derived the potentials, challenges and solutions of drone deliveries in relation to 12 LMD criteria dispersed across four stakeholder groups: senders, receivers, regulators and societies. Relationships between these criteria were also identified.
Research limitations/implications
This review contributes to logistics management by offering a current, nuanced and multifaceted discussion of drones' potential to improve the LMD process together with the challenges and solutions involved.
Practical implications
The authors provide logistics managers with a holistic roadmap to help them make informed decisions about adopting drones in their delivery systems. Regulators and society members also gain insights into the prospects, requirements and repercussions of drone deliveries.
Originality/value
This is one of the first SLRs on drone applications in LMD from a logistics management perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
The bridge expansion joint (BEJ) is a key device for accommodating spatial displacement at the beam end, and for providing vertical support for running trains passing over the gap between the main bridge and the approach bridge. For long-span railway bridges, it must also be coordinated with rail expansion joint (REJ), which is necessary to accommodate the expansion and contraction of, and reducing longitudinal stress in, the rails. The main aim of this study is to present analysis of recent developments in the research and application of BEJs in high-speed railway (HSR) long-span bridges in China, and to propose a performance-based integral design method for BEJs used with REJs, from both theoretical and engineering perspectives.
Design/methodology/approach
The study first presents a summary on the application and maintenance of BEJs in HSR long-span bridges in China representing an overview of their state of development. Results of a survey of typical BEJ faults were analyzed, and field testing was conducted on a railway cable-stayed bridge in order to obtain information on the major mechanical characteristics of its BEJ under train load. Based on the above, a performance-based integral design method for BEJs with maximum expansion range 1600 mm (±800 mm), was proposed, covering all stages from overall conceptual design to consideration of detailed structural design issues. The performance of the novel BEJ design thus derived was then verified via theoretical analysis under different scenarios, full-scale model testing, and field testing and commissioning.
Findings
Two major types of BEJs, deck-type and through-type, are used in HSR long-span bridges in China. Typical BEJ faults were found to mainly include skewness of steel sleepers at the bridge gap, abnormally large longitudinal frictional resistance, and flexural deformation of the scissor mechanisms. These faults influence BEJ functioning, and thus adversely affect track quality and train running performance at the beam end. Due to their simple and integral structure, deck-type BEJs with expansion range 1200 mm (± 600 mm) or less have been favored as a solution offering improved operational conditions, and have emerged as a standard design. However, when the expansion range exceeds the above-mentioned value, special design work becomes necessary. Therefore, based on engineering practice, a performance-based integral design method for BEJs used with REJs was proposed, taking into account four major categories of performance requirements, i.e., mechanical characteristics, train running quality, durability and insulation performance. Overall BEJ design must mainly consider component strength and the overall stiffness of BEJ; the latter factor in particular has a decisive influence on train running performance at the beam end. Detailed BEJ structural design must stress minimization of the frictional resistance of its sliding surface. The static and dynamic performance of the newly-designed BEJ with expansion range 1600 mm have been confirmed to be satisfactory, via numerical simulation, full-scale model testing, and field testing and commissioning.
Originality/value
This research provides a broad overview of the status of BEJs with large expansion range in HSR long-span bridges in China, along with novel insights into their design.

Abstract
Purpose
While the impact of digitalization on businesses has been extensively studied, the influence of digitalization on marketing outcomes in private enterprises has not received sufficient attention. The current study aims to examine how and when digitalization affects international marketing decisions in the context of private enterprises.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employs data from a survey of Chinese private enterprises conducted in 2020, which constitutes the world's largest dataset of its kind. Nearly 19,000 samples were included in the study. Additionally, we also incorporate supplementary data on digitalization in the Chinese region. Employing various methods, this study empirically and robustly examines the proposed research framework within the context of Chinese private enterprises.
Findings
Based on the resource-based view and agency theory, this paper found that digitalization can positively impact private enterprises’ direct and indirect international marketing decisions. Furthermore, we introduce the inclusion of innovation capacity and board governance as moderators in the model and find that board governance attenuates the influence of digitalization on international marketing decisions, while innovation capacity enhances the impact of digitalization on direct international marketing but diminishes its effect on indirect international marketing.
Originality/value
This study advances the understanding of the impact of digitalization on international marketing in private enterprises, thereby addressing the gap in the limited focus on digitalization in private enterprises. It also demonstrates how private enterprises effectively utilize digitalization to gain marketing advantages in the international market.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate whether female directors of companies are more likely to appoint audit firms (AFs) with women in high-level positions adopting monitoring, reputation and homophily theories.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses ordinary least square to test the hypotheses using a unique hand-collected data set obtained from various sources. To mitigate potential endogeneity and selection bias issues, system generalized method of moments (GMM) and Heckman two-stage procedures are used. Additionally, alternative independent and dependent variables are created to strengthen the validity of main results.
Findings
The findings show that female directors are more likely to appoint AFs with women in high-level positions. Non-independent female directors, compared to independent ones, are particularly inclined to do so. These results are supported by further analyses using system GMM, Heckman two-stage procedures and alternative variables.
Originality/value
This study examines how female directors influence companies’ choices of AFs with women in high-level positions. It introduces unique audit firm governance proxies and variables specific to developing countries. The study also controls for various corporate governance, company and audit firm characteristics.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effects of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on Italian hospitality sector. The investigation attempts to explain whether hotel performance drops when the perceived economic uncertainty increases in the period 2018–2022.
Design/methodology/approach
The study examines the impact of EPU on hotel performance in a sample of 661 Italian luxury hotels. To establish the relationship between EPU and hotel performance, we employ the generalized estimating equations (GEE) technique on 3,305 hotel-year observations.
Findings
The results show that EPU has a negative impact on hotel performance. More specifically, the analysis reveals that EPU is negatively and significantly related to the revenue per available room (REVPAR), average daily rate (ADR) and hotel occupancy (OCCR). We also look at the role of hotel brand chain affiliation and the moderating effect of conference space and hotel wellness services on the relationship between EPU and hotel performance.
Research limitations/implications
Results provide new evidence for academics to critically evaluate the behavior of luxury hotels under uncertain economic conditions. The investigation offers valuable information also for government, tourism policymakers, tourist hotel owners, hoteliers and tourism managers in their decision-making.
Practical implications
This study provides strategic implications for practitioners and operators in hospitality industry to evaluate the factors ensuring hotel profitability in periods of EPU.
Originality/value
This paper provides interesting insights into the characteristics and practices of profitable hotels in Italy. Few econometric studies empirically explored the effects of EPU in the hospitality field so far and no prior study investigated this topic in the Italian hospitality sector. Therefore, this paper tries to close an important gap in the existing literature improving the understanding of EPU in the Italian hospitality industry.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explain the privacy paradox, wherein individuals, despite privacy concerns, are willing to share personal information while using AI chatbots. Departing from previous research that primarily viewed AI chatbots from a non-anthropomorphic approach, this paper contends that AI chatbots are taking on an emotional component for humans. This study thus explores this topic by considering both rational and non-rational perspectives, thereby providing a more comprehensive understanding of user behavior in digital environments.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing a questionnaire survey (N = 480), this research focuses on young users who regularly engage with AI chatbots. Drawing upon the parasocial interaction theory and privacy calculus theory, the study elucidates the mechanisms governing users’ willingness to disclose information.
Findings
Findings show that cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions all positively influence perceived benefits of using ChatGPT, which in turn enhances privacy disclosure. While cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions negatively impact perceived risks, only the emotional and behavioral dimensions significantly affect perceived risk, which in turn negatively influences privacy disclosure. Notably, the cognitive dimension’s lack of significant mediating effect suggests that users’ awareness of privacy risks does not deter disclosure. Instead, emotional factors drive privacy decisions, with users more likely to disclose personal information based on positive experiences and engagement with ChatGPT. This confirms the existence of the privacy paradox.
Research limitations/implications
This study acknowledges several limitations. While the sample was adequately stratified, the focus was primarily on young users in China. Future research should explore broader demographic groups, including elderly users, to understand how different age groups engage with AI chatbots. Additionally, although the study was conducted within the Chinese context, the findings have broader applicability, highlighting the potential for cross-cultural comparisons. Differences in user attitudes toward AI chatbots may arise due to cultural variations, with East Asian cultures typically exhibiting a more positive attitude toward social AI systems compared to Western cultures. This cultural distinction—rooted in Eastern philosophies such as animism in Shintoism and Buddhism—suggests that East Asians are more likely to anthropomorphize technology, unlike their Western counterparts (Yam et al., 2023; Folk et al., 2023).
Practical implications
The findings of this study offer valuable insights for developers, policymakers and educators navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of intelligent technologies. First, regarding technology design, the study suggests that AI chatbot developers should not focus solely on functional aspects but also consider emotional and social dimensions in user interactions. By enhancing emotional connection and ensuring transparent privacy communication, developers can significantly improve user experiences (Meng and Dai, 2021). Second, there is a pressing need for comprehensive user education programs. As users tend to prioritize perceived benefits over risks, it is essential to raise awareness about privacy risks while also emphasizing the positive outcomes of responsible information sharing. This can help foster a more informed and balanced approach to user engagement (Vimalkumar et al., 2021). Third, cultural and ethical considerations must be incorporated into AI chatbot design. In collectivist societies like China, users may prioritize emotional satisfaction and societal harmony over privacy concerns (Trepte, 2017; Johnston, 2009). Developers and policymakers should account for these cultural factors when designing AI systems. Furthermore, AI systems should communicate privacy policies clearly to users, addressing potential vulnerabilities and ensuring that users are aware of the extent to which their data may be exposed (Wu et al., 2024). Lastly, as AI chatbots become deeply integrated into daily life, there is a growing need for societal discussions on privacy norms and trust in AI systems. This research prompts a reflection on the evolving relationship between technology and personal privacy, especially in societies where trust is shaped by cultural and emotional factors. Developing frameworks to ensure responsible AI practices while fostering user trust is crucial for the long-term societal integration of AI technologies (Nah et al., 2023).
Originality/value
The study’s findings not only draw deeper theoretical insights into the role of emotions in generative artificial intelligence (gAI) chatbot engagement, enriching the emotional research orientation and framework concerning chatbots, but they also contribute to the literature on human–computer interaction and technology acceptance within the framework of the privacy calculus theory, providing practical insights for developers, policymakers and educators navigating the evolving landscape of intelligent technologies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that may have an influence on the continuous intention to use mobile money as one of the Financial Technology (FinTech) products beyond the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period.
Design/methodology/approach
This study has empirically tested the expanded post-acceptance model (Extend-PAM) and the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) to explain the mobile money adoption in Jordan. Data collected were analyzed through partial least squares–structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).
Findings
The results mainly showed that the quality of administrative services and trust significantly impact confirmation and perceived usefulness. In addition, perceived security and knowledge of mobile money as one of the FinTech services significantly influence users’ confirmation and perceived usefulness. Also, usefulness and satisfaction influence continuous intention. Significant relationships were noted among confirmation, perceived usefulness, satisfaction and continuous intention to use mobile money.
Originality/value
This paper integrates two key theories: the expanded post-acceptance model (Extend-PAM) and the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) in the post-adoption behavior of mobile money. Therefore, this study attempts to fill a literature gap by examining the antecedent factors that influence the continuous intention to use mobile money services in the post-consumption stage.
