Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of business group (BG) affiliation on affiliated firms' entrepreneurial orientation (EO). The authors further investigate the possible contingent factors affecting this relationship – the age of BGs and the affiliated firm’s external linkages (ratio of external to in-house interlocks) on the relationship in an emerging market context.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a dynamic panel data framework using the system-generalized method of moments (Sys-GMM) on a sample of 670 NSE-listed Indian firms during the 2006–2019 period. EO is measured through content analysis of the letters to shareholders (LTS) issued by the companies between the period 2006 and 2019.
Findings
BG affiliates have more EO than standalone firms, as affiliates can access group-wide resources and capabilities apart from firm-specific resources. Affiliates of older BG have less EO since they are more entrenched in the institutional settings of their BG. Affiliates with more external linkages of board members will have a higher level of EO, as such linkages would subside inertial tendencies by exposing them to novel sets of information, resources and strategic practices. Further, the negative effect of BG age on EO is countered by external linkages. Overall, the study shows that the effect of group affiliation is not uniform and is contingent on the factors we have theorized and tested.
Originality/value
The paper proposes the resource-based view and the institutional void theory as likely candidates for explaining the contribution of BGs towards the EO of its affiliates, especially in the context of emerging markets. The contingent role of BG age highlighted in the paper forewarns managers about the importance of establishing internal mechanisms to preserve the EO in affiliates. Our findings about the positive role played by external linkages of the board members provide one such mechanism that can be leveraged to enhance affiliated firm’s EO.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the various challenges of humanitarian supply chains (HSC) and how these challenges can be addressed using artificial intelligence (AI).
Design/methodology/approach
This study employs exploratory analysis to identify various issues in HSC and the use cases of AI to address these issues through published literature. Subsequently, we collected tweets from Twitter and posts from LinkedIn using relevant keywords over four months. The collected data were cleaned, analyzed and interpreted to gain insights into users' perspectives on the various issues and use cases of AI in HSC.
Findings
The analysis reveals that various issues of HSC such as logistical challenges, security concerns, health and safety, access constraints, information gaps, coordination and collaboration, cultural sensitivity, funding constraints, climate and environmental factors and ethical dilemmas are predominantly discussed in published literature. Meanwhile, user-generated content reveals different levels of prioritization of these issues and AI attributes and offers AI-based solutions.
Research limitations/implications
This study is subject to certain limitations, including a restricted data collection period of only four months and the use of just two social media platforms. These limitations could be addressed by conducting a more comprehensive and extended data collection across additional platforms to produce more conclusive findings. Another limitation is the lack of contextual information, which may have provided more specific insights.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is possibly the first paper to explore both published literature and the collective intelligence of social media users to examine AI attributes, the various challenges of HSC and how AI can address these challenges.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the enhancement of mechanical properties in epoxy resin composites through the incorporation of graphene nanoparticles, focusing on their impact and wear resistance. It investigates the role of graphene, both treated and untreated, as a reinforcing agent in composites, highlighting the significance of nanoparticle dispersion and surfactant treatment in optimizing mechanical performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing a novel dispersion technique using a drawing brush, this research contrasts with traditional methods by examining the effects of graphene nanoparticle concentrations treated with surfactants – Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and Sulphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF) – on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites. The methodology includes conducting a series of impact and wear tests to assess the influence of graphene reinforcement on the composites' performance.
Findings
The findings reveal a marked enhancement in the composites impact resistance and energy absorption capabilities, which escalate with an increase in graphene content. Additionally, the study demonstrates a significant improvement in wear resistance, attributed to the superior mechanical properties, robust interface adhesion and effective dispersion of graphene. The use of surfactants for graphene treatment is identified as a crucial factor in these advancements, offering profound insights into the development of advanced composite materials for diverse industrial uses.
Originality/value
This study introduces a unique dispersion technique for graphene in epoxy composites, setting it apart from conventional methods. By focusing on the critical role of surfactant treatment in enhancing the mechanical properties of graphene-reinforced composites, it provides a novel insight into the optimization of impact and wear resistance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study compared approaches to school closures in four Latin American countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), describing the impact on the health and educational wellbeing of school-age children and youth, and evaluating their approaches in regard to continuing education through the pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
We collected 75 publicly available documents including scientific and gray literature (government documents and news releases), that referred to school closures and their impact on children’s health and wellbeing. We did thematic analyses using open, axial, and selective coding and applied the latest Health Promoting Schools standards and indicators to the findings.
Findings
Results showed that countries followed epidemiological reasons for prioritizing school closures while adopting some policies that abide by Health Promoting School principles. While they emphasized the need to reopen schools so that instruction could continue, school closures were among the longest in the world. The most significant impacts on wellbeing identified in the four countries were related to food security and mental health.
Research limitations/implications
This study focused on a particular set of documents, and it may not capture the full spectrum of relevant information in different contexts or regions.
Practical implications
By comparing school closures approaches among four Latin American countries, this study highlights the importance of context-specific interventions. In a post-pandemic era, lessons learned from these experiences should help foster more resilient and inclusive educational systems and explore the paths forward for following the new Health Promoting Schools framework in the region.
Originality/value
Cross-country qualitative analyses on this topic are rare. This study adds to the knowledge base by eliciting lessons for future health education research and policy efforts.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the behavior of viscous hybrid ferromagnetic fluids flowing through plain elastic sheets with the magnetic polarization effect. It examines flow in a porous medium using Stefan blowing and utilizes a versatile hybrid ferrofluid containing MnZnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the C2H2F4 base fluid, offering potential real-world applications. The study focuses on steady, laminar and viscous incompressible flow, analyzing heat and mass transfer aspects, including thermal radiation, Brownian motion, thermophoresis and viscous dissipation with convective boundary condition.
Design/methodology/approach
The governing expression of the flow model is addressed with pertinent non-dimensional transformations, and the finite element method solves the obtained system of ordinary differential equations.
Findings
The variations in fluid velocity, temperature and concentration profiles against all the physical parameters are analyzed through their graphical view. The association of these parameters with local surface friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number is examined with the numerical data in a table.
Originality/value
This work extends previous research on ferrofluid flow, investigating unexplored parameters and offering valuable insights with potential engineering, industrial and medical implications. It introduces a novel approach that uses mathematical simplification techniques and the finite element method for the solution.

Abstract
Purpose
This study is to examine the impact of viscous dissipation, thermal radiation and Ohmic heating on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with thermal and mass transport over a horizontally stretching surface. Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model on a non-Newtonian viscous fluid along with two viscosity models and convective boundary condition has been employed. Tri-hybrid nanofluid has been used to increase thermal performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Governing mathematical model has been transposed into a dimensionless system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by applying suitable similarity transformation. Numerical solution has been found by applying the bvp4c shooting method in MATLAB software.
Findings
Velocity and thermal profiles of Model-I dominate the profiles of Model-II whereas opposite behavior is noticed for concentration profiles. It is concluded that there is an increase in temperature due to thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and convective boundary condition.
Originality/value
The novelty of presented work is to examine the impact of Ohmic heating, viscous dissipation, thermal radiation, chemical reaction and two models of viscosity on Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model of tri-hybrid non-Newtonian nanofluid with convective boundary constraint. The accuracy and effectiveness of presented model have been compared with already published research.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed academic institutions to rapidly transition from tradition classroom teaching to online teaching methods globally, leading to huge disruption in the academic world. Online teaching makes education accessible to people who may have struggled to attend the traditional classes. This transition is facilitated by advancement in technology, fuelled by tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Higher education institutions are leveraging on these tools to enhance student learning process and student engagement. However, stakeholders are raising genuine concerns about ethical issues surrounding these platforms like plagiarism, reduced attention span of students. Reliance on these tools may limit the creativity of faculty and students. Usage of tools for regular administrative and academic tasks like grading and marking attendance can increase the process effectiveness at the same time. This will help in identifying strengths and areas for improvement of every student and offers feedback also based on those observations. Though concerns about the usage of AI tools in the classroom persist, the benefits offered by these tools cannot be undermined. It is important to study various ways of integrating these tools in the teaching pedagogy by being conscious of the ethical aspects. The study focuses on detailed analysis of AI tools applicable in education and research domain and the innovative methods of integrating the same in the classroom teaching. The study is based on qualitative data collected from secondary sources. Findings can be used by high education institutions for leveraging technology for better student engagement and improving performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to learn what kinds of obstacles Indian businesses face when trying to make biodiversity protection a top priority as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. Interventions are proposed to elevate biodiversity protection to the ranks of CSR priorities among Indian businesses.
Design/methodology/approach
This study applies an interpretive phenomenological analysis strategy to glean information from in-depth interviews with leaders and professionals in CSR.
Findings
The findings of the study revealed that the main factors influencing Indian companies’ CSR area choices are existing processes and stakeholder pressures. Companies prioritise engaging with local communities and employees when selecting CSR activities. The major challenge is integrating biodiversity into business plans, with CSR heads struggling to secure investment due to long gestation periods and limited media coverage. Implementing agencies face issues with project deliverables, mainly due to land ownership and lack of local government support. Companies can also encourage employee involvement in pro-environmental behaviours. The study also provides practical solutions for Indian companies to enhance their CSR engagement in biodiversity conservation.
Research limitations/implications
The research only focuses on the opinions of CSR specialists and leaders, so it may only consider part of the situation’s complexity inside the organisation. The results may only apply to the business climate in India; hence, extra care is warranted when extrapolating them to other countries. Nonetheless, the study provides valuable insights into the interplay between CSR and biodiversity protection that might inform future studies and policy initiatives.
Originality/value
This research fills a gap in the literature by investigating an uncharted territory: the role of CSR in protecting biodiversity in India. Examining obstacles and variables affecting CSR objectives illuminates business involvement in biodiversity conservation. The recommended treatments have real-world consequences for improving CSR involvement in this critical area.
