Abstract

Purpose

Continuous development of digital technology makes it necessary for digital entrepreneurs to pivot to cope with the environmental changes. However, limited research has focused on the important strategic orientation of digital new ventures in digital contexts, digital orientation, which depicts the tendency of new ventures to utilize digital technologies to create value. This research aims to explore the relationship between digital orientation and pivoting, along with the mediating role of dynamic capabilities as essential organizational competencies. Additionally, the study investigates the influence of boundary conditions related to the environmental dynamism and the prior experience of entrepreneurs.

Design/methodology/approach

The data of this study were gathered by a two-phase survey of 328 Chinese digital new ventures in China with the assistance of entrepreneurial service organizations, entrepreneurship parks and entrepreneurial training institutions. The current study used regression analysis to verify the hypotheses and factor analysis to evaluate the validity and reliability of the measurement by using MPLUS, SPSS and PROCESS macro.

Findings

The findings of this research indicate that digital orientation enhances pivoting of digital new ventures, with dynamic capabilities acting as a crucial mediator in this process. Additionally, the dynamic environment and prior entrepreneurial experience influence both the relationship between digital orientation and dynamic capabilities, as well as the mediating effect of dynamic capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

This study significantly contributes to the existing literature by exploring the relationship between digital orientation and pivoting in digital new ventures. This broadens the scope of research on pivoting and enriches the literature on digital orientation in the digital context. By emphasizing how these factors shape pivoting, our research provides valuable guidance for entrepreneurs responding to the dynamic environment and technological advances.

Originality/value

This research illuminates the relationship between digital orientation and pivoting based on the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT). It explores the antecedent of digital orientation on digital new ventures’ pivoting activities, reveals the internal mechanisms and boundary conditions and enriches the literature related to RBV and DCT in the digital entrepreneurship context.

Abstract

Purpose

The main goal of this paper is to present a synthetic multiple criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) methodology for assessing the enterprise digital maturity with linear Diophantine fuzzy (LDF) setting.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilizes the presented LDF generalized Dombi operator to aggregate assessment information of experts. The developed combined weight model through merging the rank sum (RS) model and symmetry point of criterion (SPC) method is used to ascertain the comprehensive importance of criterion. The evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) approach based upon regret theory (RT) is presented to achieve the sorting of candidate enterprises.

Findings

Firstly, the proposed method has strong stability. Secondly, the proposed method takes into consideration the psychological behavior of experts during the decision-making process which further enhances the rationality of the decision results. Finally, the proposed method integrates expert and criterion weight determination models which provides a practical evaluation framework for assessing the digital maturity of enterprises. The research outcomes confirm that the proposed approach fails to resolve the decision problems with unknown weight information flexibly, but also reflect the psychological behavior of expert in decision process. The presented weight approach also provides a rational algorithm to ascertain the weight more accurate.

Originality/value

A composite LDF group decision-making approach is presented by aggregating the proposed generalized Dombi operator, combined weight model and the EDAS model, which make the outcome more reasonable. Sensitivity analysis and comparison study are conducted to reflect the superiority of the proposed approach.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies have rarely integrated the financing modes of a capital-constrained manufacturer with the choices of online sales strategies. To address this gap, the authors study how a manufacturer selects optimal financing modes under different sales strategies in three dual-channel supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper considers three sales strategies, namely, combining a traditional retailer channel with one of the direct selling, reselling and agency selling channels, and two common financing modes, namely, bank financing and retailer financing. The authors obtain equilibrium outcomes of the manufacturer and traditional retailer and then provide the conditions for them to select optimal financing modes under three sales strategies.

Findings

The results indicate that the manufacturer’s financing decisions rely on the initial capital and interest rates, and the manufacturer selects retailer financing only if the initial capital is relatively larger. In terms of financing mode options, the retailer financing mode is more beneficial for the manufacturer under the three sales strategies. From the perspective of sales strategies, the direct selling model is more beneficial. In addition, the higher the consumer acceptance of the online channel, the more profits the manufacturer obtains.

Practical implications

This paper provides suggestions on how the capital-constrained manufacturer chooses financing modes and sales strategies.

Originality/value

This paper integrates the financing mode and different sales strategies to investigate the manufacturer’s optimal operational decisions. These sales strategies allow us to investigate the manufacturer’s optimal financing modes in the presence of both different financing modes and sales strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This research examines the impact of the National Rural E-commerce Comprehensive Demonstration Project (NRECDP) on poverty reduction and income growth in rural China.

Design/methodology/approach

The study develops a theoretical framework, which considers the role of geographical, technological, institutional and cultural factors for the e-commerce poverty alleviation (e-CPA) model. Empirically, this study applies the difference-in-differences (DID) model and the event study approach to evaluate the effectiveness of NRECDP on the basis of large-scale county-level and household-level panel data spanning 2010 to 2020.

Findings

The study found that the NRECDP, as a government-led, information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled, market-based program, has led to a significant increase in per capita output of primary industry employees, as well as in the disposable income of rural residents, especially those in national-level poverty-stricken (NP) counties. The interventions of the NRECDP achieved these positive outcomes through transportation and Internet infrastructure improvement, ICT adoption and human capital accumulation in impoverished towns and villages in remote rural areas. These effects are larger in the eastern region of China, followed by the central region, whereas the weakest effects were found in the western region. However, we found little evidence of the NRECDP increasing household developmental expenditure.

Research limitations/implications

The study findings have important practical and policy implications for rural e-commerce development and self-sustained poverty alleviation solutions. The research revealed the significance of government NRECDP interventions for increasing rural income, reducing living costs, and empowering the rural population in its multiple social roles, namely, as consumers, producers, employees and microentrepreneurs. The local cultural context may also play a role in ICT adoption and entrepreneurship cultivation with a downstream effect on the effectiveness of e-CPA practices. Policymakers would need to ensure a supportive entrepreneur-friendly environment for rural e-commerce development and continue implementing progressive policies for poverty alleviation.

Originality/value

This study explores poverty alleviation issues in China by developing for the first time a multi-faceted framework that is subsequently tested by both county-level and household-level large-scale observations. Also, it is the first study to provide nationwide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of e-CPA in narrowing down the spatial and digital divides in China. In addition to the impact of geography, technology and governmental support, this study also sheds light on the role of culture in the adoption and diffusion of digital technologies and as a source of local entrepreneurial opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose

The brake pipe system was an essential braking component of the railway freight trains, but the existing E-type sealing rings had problems such as insufficient low-temperature resistance, poor heat stability and short service life. To address these issues, low-phenyl silicone rubber was prepared and tested, and the finite element analysis and experimental studies on the sealing performance of its sealing rings were carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

The low-temperature resistance and thermal stability of the prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber were studied using low-temperature tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic thermomechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The sealing performance of the low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring was studied by using finite element analysis software abaqus and experiments.

Findings

The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring possessed excellent low-temperature resistance and thermal stability. According to the finite element analysis results, the finish of the flange sealing surface and groove outer edge should be ensured, and extrusion damage should be avoided. The sealing rings were more susceptible to damage in high compression ratio and/or low-temperature environments. When the sealing effect was ensured, a small compression ratio should be selected, and rubbers with hardness and elasticity less affected by temperature should be selected. The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring had zero leakage at both room temperature (RT) and −50 °C.

Originality/value

The innovation of this study is that it provides valuable data and experience for the future development of the sealing rings used in the brake pipe flange joints of the railway freight cars in China.

Abstract

Purpose

High-speed turnouts are more complex in structure and thus may cause abnormal vibration of high-speed train car body, affecting driving safety and passenger riding experience. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the data characteristics of continuous hunting of high-speed trains passing through turnouts and propose a diagnostic method for engineering applications.

Design/methodology/approach

First, Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) is performed to determine the first characteristic component of the car body’s lateral acceleration. Then, the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is performed to calculate the marginal spectra. Finally, the presence of a continuous hunting problem is determined based on the results of the comparison calculations and diagnostic thresholds. To improve computational efficiency, permutation entropy (PE) is used as a fast indicator to identify turnouts with potential problems.

Findings

Under continuous hunting conditions, the PE is less than 0.90; the ratio of the maximum peak value of the signal component to the original signal peak value exceeded 0.7, and there is an energy band in the STFT time-frequency map, which corresponds to a frequency distribution range of 1–2 Hz.

Originality/value

The research results have revealed the lateral vibration characteristics of the high-speed train’s car body during continuous hunting when passing through turnouts. On this basis, an effective diagnostic method has been proposed. With a focus on practical engineering applications, a rapid screening index for identifying potential issues has been proposed, significantly enhancing the efficiency of diagnostic processes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a cloud platform architecture considering information sharing based on blockchain to realize the security and convenience of enterprise information sharing in the automotive supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

A bilateral matching model considering enterprises information contribution stimulates information sharing and improves the efficiency and quality of supply and demand matching. Three smart contracts are used to complete the information sharing process and match supply and demand in the automotive supply chain.

Findings

The system is tested on the local Ganache private chain, and the decentralized web page is designed based on the architecture prototype.

Abstract

Purpose

In the practice of live streaming e-commerce, the consumer demand is usually uncertain, and the inventory and prices can be decided by brand owners or streamers. To this end, this study examines the inventory and pricing decisions of the brand owner and streamer in a live streaming e-commerce supply chain under demand uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, four scenarios are considered, i.e. the brand owner determines the inventory and price (Scenario BB), the brand owner determines the inventory and the streamer determines the price (Scenario BS), the streamer determines the inventory and the brand owner determines the price (Scenario SB), and the streamer determines the inventory and price (Scenario SS).

Findings

The results show that the inventory and prices, as well as the profits of the brand owner and streamer increase with the consumer sensitivity to streamer’s sales effort level under the four scenarios. The inventory (price) is the highest under Scenario SS (SB), while that is the lowest under Scenario BB (BS). In addition, when the sensitivity is low, the brand owner’s profit is the highest under Scenario BB, otherwise, the profit is the highest under Scenario SS. Regardless of the sensitivity, the streamer’s profit is always the highest under Scenario SS.

Originality/value

Few studies focused on the inventory and pricing decisions of brand owners and streamers in live streaming e-commerce supply chains under demand uncertainty, while this work bridges the research gap. This study can provide theoretical basis and decision support for brand owners and streamers.

Abstract

Purpose

The round shaft that needs to be subjected to torsional loading is a class of common engineering component in engineering structures. The purpose of this paper is mainly to find the mechanical relationship under torsional loading for the lightweight round shaft with metal foam as the core and dense metal tube as the shell.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of the octahedral model of porous materials, the mechanical relationship would be deduced for both the round tube shell and the metal foam core of the composite round shaft, to which torsion occurs.

Findings

The non-margin design can be characterized by the mechanical relationship for this composite round shaft, and the mathematical model is also established to design the metal foam core in the composite round shaft under safe loading.

Originality/value

The composite round shaft with metal foam as the core and dense metal tube as the shell could be a new type of lightweight round shaft with excellent comprehensive performances. Here the metal foam core with an open-cell reticular structure can be the functional part with multidiscipline functions, like sound absorption, noise reduction, energy absorption, vibration reduction and heat exchange. Thus, this class of composite round shaft has a comprehensive advantage in both mechanical and physical properties.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and text-based corporate innovation based on a sample of India’s ESG-disclosed companies from financial year 2011–2012 to 2021–2022. Further, it endeavors to investigate the moderating role of heightened climate policy uncertainty (CPU) in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

To verify these hypotheses, the authors first construct a corporate innovation index for India using a sophisticated natural language processing model on each firm-year’s management discussion and analysis reports. Next, the authors use a panel fixed effects model to examine how ESG performance impacts corporate innovation and its moderating and mediating components.

Findings

Empirical evidence suggests higher ESG performance bolsters text-based corporate innovation. After addressing endogeneity issues with the system GMM estimator and two-stage least square IV, incorporating additional control variables and using alternative innovation measurement, the baseline results remain unchanged. Next, the authors find this link is mediated by reducing information asymmetry, financial constraints and managerial myopia. The authors also observe that increased CPU favorably moderates the ESG-innovation nexus. Additionally, the heterogeneity research shows that ESG only positively impacts innovation in specific industries and firms in their growth and mature life cycle phases.

Practical implications

The results demonstrate that sustainable and ethical business practices can foster corporate innovation. Thus, this study may provide valuable insight for investors, managers and policymakers.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship between ESG performance and text-based corporate innovation using a machine learning model.
