Abstract

Purpose

Carotid artery is often associated with plaque deposition because of its shape and associated flow features. The shape of stenosed bifurcation is characterised by bifurcation angle (ß), planarity angle (α) and severity of stenosis (b). In the present work, three-dimensional numerical computations have been performed to analyse the effect of these geometrical parameters of carotid bifurcation on the characteristics of flow.

Design/methodology/approach

Governing equations of this study were solved using ANSYS Fluent 20.1 and the blood flow was considered as laminar, pulsatile and non-Newtonian. Instantaneous flow behaviour has been illustrated using vorticity, velocity and helicity contours, whereas the time-averaged wall shear stress ( τw¯) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) quantify the time-averaged behaviour.

Findings

The recirculation zone and secondary flow are ascertained to be stronger for higher bifurcation angle as compared to the lower bifurcation angle. Strength of the secondary flow is found to reduce with increase in α from 0° to 10°, whereas it grows as α varies from 10° to 20°. For higher bifurcation angles, τw¯ is lower than 2 Pa and OSI is greater than 0.2 on the outer walls. Similar observations were made for τw¯ and OSI distribution on bottom wall in non-planar cases, which predicted atherogenic locations.

Originality/value

The values for ß were taken as 30°, 45°, 60° and 75°, whereas for α, range of 0°–20° was chosen. The stenosis was considered on the outer wall of internal carotid artery and its severity was considered within the range of 0%–60%.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to reduce waste management and generate wealth by investigating the novelty of combining chicken feather fiber and bamboo particles to produce hybrid biocomposites. This is part of responsible production and sustainability techniques for sustainable development goals. This study aims to broaden animal and plant fiber utilization in the sustainable production of epoxy resins for engineering applications.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used two reinforcing materials [chicken feather fiber (CFF) and bamboo particles (BP)] to reinforce epoxy resin. The BPs were kept constant at 6 Wt.%, while the CFF was varied within 3–15 Wt.% in the composites to make CFF-BP polymer-reinforced composite (CFF-BP PRC). The mechanical experiment showed a 21% reduction in densities, making the CFF-BP PRC an excellent choice for lightweight applications.

Findings

It was discovered that fabricated composites with 10 mm CFF length had improved properties compared with the 15 mm CFF length and pristine samples, which confirmed that short fibers are better at enhancing randomly dispersed fibers in the epoxy matrix. However, the ballistic properties of both samples matched. There is a 40% increase in tensile strength and a 54% increase in flexural strength of the CFF-BP PRC compared to the pristine sample.

Originality/value

According to the literature review, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is a novel study of chicken fiber and bamboo particles in reinforcing epoxy composite.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to gain empirical insights into the prevalence of usage of digital technologies and strategies that were deployed by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the service sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, the extent of their usage and how they were integrated in the SMEs business to ensure their survival against the restrictive measures of COVID-19 containment. Furthermore, this study shades the light on challenges SMEs faced in the course to sustain their business.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a cross-sectional descriptive research design, a structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 SME managers in Dar es Salaam city. A response rate was 100 respondents, equivalent to 83% of the targeted sample size of 120. A simple random sampling was used. The collected data was analyzed descriptively.

Findings

The findings indicate that there was satisfactory level of digital technology integration for SMEs in Tanzania but not sufficient enough to ensure sustainability during pandemic. SMEs are urged to be prepared and acquaint themselves on the digitalization aspects for their business continuity. To make it easier for SMEs to embrace digitalization, technology manufacturers are urged to consider making digital technologies tailored made to fit the SMEs’ context. The study recommends for government support in terms of financial aid and education to enhance SMEs’ ability toward digitalization.

Originality/value

This study is of its own kind documenting the strategies and associated challenges the SMEs faced in the pursuit to sustain their businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It thus advances mechanisms that SMEs may use to expand their business beyond their physical localities using digital technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

Pakistan ranks third globally in terms of newborn deaths occuring within the first 24 hours of life. With a neonatal mortality rate of 42.0%, it carries the highest burden compared to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh (17%), India (22.7%) and Afghanistan (37%). While there has been a decline in neonatal mortality rates in Pakistan, the pace of this decline is slower than that of other countries in the region. Hence, it is crucial to conduct a comprehensive examination of the risk factors contributing to neonatal mortality in Pakistan over an extended period. This study aims to analyze the trends and determinants of neonatal mortality in Pakistan over three decades, providing valuable insights into this persistent issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The study focused on neonatal mortality as the response variable, which is defined as the death of a live-born child within 28 days of birth. Neonates who passed away during this period were categorized as “cases,” while those who survived beyond a specific timeframe were referred to as “noncases.” To conduct a pooled analysis of neonatal mortality, birth records of 39,976 children born in the five years preceding the survey were extracted from four waves (1990–2018) of the Pakistan Demographic and Household Survey. The relationship between risk factors and the response variable was examined using the Cox Proportional Hazard Model. Neonatal mortality rates were calculated through the direct method using the “syncmrates” package in Stata 15.

Findings

During the extended period in Pakistan, several critical protective factors against neonatal mortality were identified, including a large family size, improved toilet facilities, middle-aged and educated mothers, female children, singleton live births, large size at birth and longer birth intervals. These factors were found to reduce the risk of neonatal mortality significantly.

Originality/value

This study makes the first attempt to analyze the trends and patterns of potential risk factors associated with neonatal mortality in Pakistan. By examining a large dataset spanning several years, the study provides valuable insights into the factors influencing neonatal mortality.

Abstract

Purpose

This study introduces a novel approach to conducting importance-performance analysis (IPA) and importance-performance competitor analysis (IPCA) by utilizing online reviews as an alternative to traditional survey-based marketing research.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to conduct IPA and IPCA utilizing online reviews, the following three steps were executed: (1) Extract key attributes of the product/service with latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling. (2) Measure the importance of each attribute with keyword analysis. (3) Measure the performance of each attribute with KoBERT-based sentiment analysis.

Findings

By utilizing LDA, we were able to identify significant attributes identified by real users’ reviews. The approach of evaluating attribute importance using keyword metrics offers the advantage of straightforward computations, reducing computational expenses and facilitating intuitive metric assessments. The evaluation of BERT-based performance involved adapting pre-trained language models to the specific analysis domain, resulting in substantial time savings without compromising accuracy, ultimately bolstering the dependability of the metrics. Lastly, the case study’s findings indicate a growing emphasis on the aesthetic aspects of mobile banking apps in South Korea while highlighting the pressing need for enhancements in critical areas such as stability and security, which are particularly pertinent to the finance industry.

Originality/value

Previous studies have limitations in assessing significance solely based on sentiment scores and review ratings, resulting in an inability to independently measure satisfaction and importance metrics. This research addresses these limitations by introducing a keyword frequency-based importance metric, enhancing the accuracy and suitability of these measurements independently. In the context of performance measurement, this study utilizes pre-trained large language models (LLMs), which provide a cost-effective alternative to previous methods while preserving measurement accuracy. Additionally, this approach demonstrates the potential for industry-wide competitive analysis by enabling comparisons among multiple competitors. Furthermore, the study extends the application of review data-based IPA and IPCA, traditionally used in the tourism sector, to the evaluation of financial mobile applications. This innovation expands the scope of these methodologies, indicating their potential applicability across various industries.
