Abstract

This chapter explores the multifaceted relationship between quantum computing (QC) and sustainability, with a focus on the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimisation (QUBO) framework. The manuscript delves into the theoretical underpinnings of QUBO and its formulation as a quantum annealing problem, identifying the quantum principles that facilitate the resolution of such optimisation challenges. It offers a critical analysis of the suitability of QUBO for unconstrained problems and its efficacy in consistently locating the global minimum – a pivotal concern in optimisation tasks. Further, this study provides a nuanced discussion on the intersection of QC and sustainability. It delineates the types of optimisation problems within sustainability initiatives that are amenable to formulation as QUBO problems, while also highlighting sustainability challenges that elude the QUBO framework. It argues for the integration of quantum solutions into business operations, highlighting the potential for QC to play a transformative role in achieving sustainability objectives. The critique of the current hype surrounding QC provides a balanced viewpoint, ensuring a grounded approach to the adoption of quantum technologies in tackling pressing global issues.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the key domains and prevailing trends in the context of teacher effectiveness while proposing directions for future research in this area.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilising the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index databases within Scopus, covering the period from 2014 to 2024, a bibliometric review of 555 studies related to teacher effectiveness is conducted. This paper employs Bibliomagika 2.2, OpenRefine, R Output, IIPMaps and VOSviewer to screen, clean, analyse and report relevant and ethical data.

Findings

Based on the bibliometric analysis, we identified and revealed the subsequent publication trends, Lotka’s law and Price’s law authorship distribution patterns, the most active countries and thematic analysis of highly cited documents. We further integrate thematic analysis that emerged in highly cited documents with co-occurrence analyses of author keywords in the literature on teachers’ effectiveness research. However, the findings contradict the traditional distribution of Lotka’s law and Price’s law.

Research limitations/implications

This finding has a notable limitation as it only covers 10 years of Scopus database data and predominantly focuses on English-language documents. Furthermore, this study does not thoroughly examine contextual factors influencing these trends, such as educational policy, technological progress and COVID-19 endemic repercussions. Finally, it should be emphasised that the analysis of trends extracted in Scopus cannot be generalised as the study relies heavily on citation metrics, which vary significantly across disciplines, leading to potential biases in evaluating teacher effectiveness studies, particularly those with an interdisciplinary nature.

Originality/value

This study provides readers with an in-depth analysis and understanding of the development of teacher effectiveness research with Lotka’s law and Price’s law. It also highlights recommendations for future research directions to ensure its sustainability, survival and expansion in the coming decades align with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO’s) Sustainable Development Goal 4 of quality education.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact of bank managerial ability on the cost of loans using an extensive data set of US banks from 2001:Q1 to 2021:Q2.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors use multiple fixed-effects estimation to estimate the impact of managerial ability on bank loan pricing. In addition, the authors also perform different econometrics regression methods to test the robustness of the model including: Prais–Winsten regression, Newey–West regression and the Fama McBeth method, instrumental variable regression, propensity score matching method and quantile regression.

Findings

The results show that banks with higher managerial ability tend to provide loans with lower costs, and this effect is stronger at larger banks. In addition, research results from the quantile regression model show that the negative impact of managerial ability on the cost of loans will be stronger at banks with higher lending costs.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to investigate this relationship between managerial ability and bank loan pricing from the supply side. In addition, this paper examines the impact of bank managerial ability on the loan costs of banks of different sizes, as well as differs across the distribution of the dependent variable. Therefore, this paper is of particular interest to regulators and policymakers.
