Abstract

Purpose

The study investigates the serial mediation of psychological ownership and workplace innovation in the nexus between organizational leadership and employee performance among healthcare workers in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

Six hundred and thirty-seven samples were selected using convenience sampling technique. The data gathered using self-reported questionnaire were analyzed using SEM-PLS.

Findings

The findings reveal that organizational leadership directly improves healthcare employee’s psychological ownership, workplace innovation and employee performance. Psychological ownership and workplace innovation separately and serially mediate the relationship between organizational leadership and healthcare employees’ performance.

Practical implications

The study highlights the significant influence of organizational leadership, psychological ownership and workplace innovation on the performance of healthcare employees. Healthcare organizations ought to allocate resources toward leadership development strategies to foster a favorable work atmosphere that promotes innovation and enables employees to assume ownership of their tasks and contribute to continuing enhancement, ultimately leading to enhanced performance.

Originality/value

This research is a pioneering study on serial mediation of psychological ownership and workplace behavior in the association between organizational leadership and performance in healthcare settings in Ghana.

Abstract

Purpose

Science fiction analogies have been shown to be an effective vehicle for disseminating scientific knowledge and building a better understanding of scientific principles. Toward this end, this study aims to use the Star Trek universe as a lens in an effort to remove barriers to understanding the science of service research.

Design/methodology/approach

This study synthesizes research on using science fiction narratives in sparking dialogue within and beyond scientific communities, draws parallels between the Star Trek universe and the service research domain and uses these insights to identify pertinent ways forward.

Findings

In the service research domain, science fiction analogies and dramaturgical metaphors can challenge researchers to reflect beyond the domain’s traditional boundaries. In fact, the Star Trek universe lends itself as visionary backdrop to assess leadership principles, understand the evolution of scientific paradigms and inspire future service research.

Originality/value

This article contributes to the service research literature by introducing the notion of drawing on science fiction analogies to facilitate key dialogues in a scientific context and demonstrates how such analogies can be used to provide guidance in moving the service research discipline forward.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to invite Professor René Proyer, a leading positive psychologist and authority on play, to tell his story, share highlights from his research and insights into playfulness, mental health and positive psychology.

Design/methodology/approach

A positive autoethnographic case study approach is used to enable Professor Proyer to narrate his story while also addressing topics within a Q&A format.

Findings

Play is important for childhood, adolescent and adult mental health and well-being. Although distinct from one another, humor, laughter, creativity and playfulness exhibit overlap. Proyer’s research has even shown that just reflecting on playful moments can increase happiness and alleviate depression.

Research limitations/implications

The experiences, perspectives and insight of one person are narrated in this case study and these cannot be generalized.

Practical implications

Play can be widely defined, and there are many ways to enjoy it freely and at no cost, making it highly accessible and practical to support mental health and well-being. By seeking out and creating playful situations, we can embrace playfulness as adults.

Social implications

As Proyer relays by quoting Christopher Peterson, one definition of positive psychology is “Other people matter”. By finding ways to playfully interact with others, we can find immediate enjoyment but also build and strengthen relationships and support our health and well-being, and that of others too.

Originality/value

Professor Proyer is a positive psychologist and authority on playfulness. Here, he shares with us multiple insights in the areas of mental health and play.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology-mediated learning (TML) is gaining popularity among business organizations for upskilling their employees. However, high dropout rates have limited its effectiveness. Thus, we explore, if and how personalization of TML can improve its adoption and effectiveness in workplaces from the lens of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) theory.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory sequential mixed-method design was used for this study. Study 1 included interviews (N = 27) of Learning and Development (L&D) leaders and employees (learners) of large global organizations, about their experiences with TML. Emergent themes led us to our research model, which integrates constructs of personalization, technology adoption and transfer of training (TT). In Study 2, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected from employees who have experienced TML (N = 406) and analyzed using PLS-SEM.

Findings

Findings suggested that personalization of TML positively influenced intent to use TML and transfer skills, thereby improving TML effectiveness and proving its relevance in workplaces. Precisely, personalized TML recommendations from managers impacted (1) behavioral intention (BI) and TT directly; (2) BI through performance expectancy (PE); (3) TT through social influence and BI individually; and (4) TT through PE and BI sequentially. Likewise, allowing employees the flexibility to choose TML based on their interests influenced (1) BI directly and via hedonic motivation (HM) and (2) TT via HM and BI individually and sequentially.

Practical implications

Using our model, L&D practitioners may design and personalize their TML ecosystems to foster adoption and transfer of training in workplaces.

Originality/value

Personalization of learning in workplaces has received scant attention; thereby, our study expands existing knowledge in this relatively nascent field of research.

Purpose

The article seeks to identify what constitutes economic resilience and how it is conceptualized in economic theory and policy. It explores the nuances of resilience as the ability of an economic system to adapt, reorganize and recover from shocks such as recessions or crises.

Design/methodology/approach

The article highlights the use of corpus linguistics methods and content analysis techniques to systematically analyse how economic resilience is discussed in the literature, providing a more objective and data-driven perspective on the topic.

Findings

The findings of the review are intended to help deepen the understanding of resilience in economic systems, with a focus on its implications for future research, policy development and economic planning. The authors emphasize the importance of resilience for sustainable and adaptable economies, particularly in light of global economic disruptions.

Originality/value

The article’s originality comes from its methodological innovation (using corpus linguistics), comprehensive review of economic resilience across multiple theories and its policy-oriented focus on improving economic systems’ adaptability to external shocks. It provides a fresh and systematic perspective that enriches the academic discussion on resilience, with clear implications for future research and policymaking.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the integration of risk management and circular economy (CE) principles within the healthcare sector to promote sustainability and resilience. Specifically, the study aims to demonstrate how risk management can support the transition to a circular economy in healthcare supply chains. By integrating risk management practices with CE principles, healthcare organizations can identify potential risks and opportunities associated with circular initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a qualitative research approach, using a case study methodology with semi-structured interviews conducted at primary care facilities to understand the application of CE principles in practice. The study uses fuzzy logic methods to assess and mitigate risks associated with strategies promoting CE principles. Additionally, key performance indicators are identified to evaluate the effectiveness and enhance the resilience of these strategies within healthcare supply chains.

Findings

The study highlights the critical role of robust risk management strategies in facilitating the transition to a circular economy within healthcare organizations. Primary care facilities, which are critical to frontline healthcare delivery, are particularly vulnerable to product shortages due to supply risks. This study focuses on critical protective equipment, specifically latex gloves and assesses operational risks, including supply, demand and environmental risks, using a fuzzy logic-based model. Import delays were found to be a moderate risk, typically occurring once a year. The research highlights critical KPIs for a successful CE transition within healthcare supply chains, such as on-time delivery and service quality, which are directly related to the risk of supply chain disruption. In addition, the study highlights the significant impact of other CE strategies on healthcare supply chains, including localized production and manufacturing, innovation in product development, reverse logistics, closed-loop supply chains and the adoption of lean principles.

Practical implications

This study provides valuable insights for healthcare organizations to optimize resource efficiency, reduce waste and promote circularity in their operations. By implementing the proposed solutions and focusing on the identified KPIs, organizations can develop strategies to achieve sustainability goals and enhance resilience in healthcare supply chains.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the application of risk management in facilitating the transition to a circular economy in the healthcare sector. The use of fuzzy logic methodology offers a novel approach to assessing and mitigating risks associated with critical product failures in supply chain activities. The study’s findings provide practical guidance for healthcare organizations seeking to integrate circular economy principles and improve sustainability performance.

Purpose

This study aims to address the following objectives: determine the pro-environmental behavior of students and professors engaged in the course Sustainable Tourism; determine the pro-environmental behavior component of the professor that has the highest influence on the pro-environmental behavior of students; and formulate a model describing the components of the pro-environmental behavior of the professor with significant influence on the pro-environmental behavior of students. It also evaluates the norm-activation-theory-aligned pro-environmental behavior of the course's instructor and the students taking the course after they participated in the course Sustainable Tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

A correlational analysis using the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach was conducted in the survey results to determine the specific components of the professor's pro-environmental behavior that influenced the students' pro-environmental behavior.

Findings

Situational responsibility, efficacy and denial of responsibility were proven more influential in shaping students' pro-environmental behavior. This implies that students learn and adopt a pro-environmental orientation through role modeling and practical application, not by knowledge acquisition.

Originality/value

This could improve the body of knowledge on pro-environmental behavior by analyzing the reciprocal relationships between the person who delivers the course that instills pro-environmental behavior and students who learn from their professors using the norm activation theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how the legitimacy of internal auditing is reconstructed during enterprise resource planning (ERP)-driven technological change.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the comparative analysis of internal auditing and its transformation due to ERP implementations at two case firms operating in the food sector in Egypt – one a major Egyptian multinational corporation (MNC) and the other a major domestic company (DC).

Findings

Internal auditors (IAs) at MNC saw ERP implementation as an opportunity to reconstruct the legitimacy of internal auditing work by engaging and partnering with actors involved with the ERP change. In doing so, the IAs acquired system certifications and provided line functions and external auditors with data-driven business insights. The “practical coping mechanism” adopted by the IAs led to the acceptance (and legitimacy) of their work. In contrast, IAs at DC adopted a purposeful strategy of disengaging, blaming and rejecting since they were skeptical of the top management team's (TMT's) sincerity. The “disinterestedness” led to the loss of legitimacy in the eyes of the stakeholders.

Originality/value

The article offers two contributions. First, it extends the literature by highlighting a spectrum of behavior displayed by IAs (coping with impending issues vs strategic purposefulness) during ERP-driven technological change. Second, the article contributes to the literature on legitimacy by highlighting four intertwined micro-processes – participating, socializing, learning and role-forging – that contribute to reconstructing the legitimacy of internal auditing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the conceptual confusion in the extant literature about organizational agility and explore its role in different relationships in the context of digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrative review of the relevant literature on agility was conducted. The literature on organizational agility and other variables in recent quantitative research was also examined to explore its role in different relationships.

Findings

Organizational agility is the ability to quickly respond and proactively embrace unanticipated changes in dynamic environments through effective resource reconfiguration and rapid decision-making. The role of organizational agility in achieving digital transformation has not been addressed from a holistic conceptual perspective. This paper addresses that gap and proposes that organizational agility is the underlying mechanism for an organization to fully use and engage its workforce, operation and network in the process of digital transformation.

Research limitations/implications

This research is an integrative review of the existing literature on the concept of agility and its relationships. The next phase of research needed for theory building will be the operationalization of constructs.

Practical implications

Organizations should strive to strategically develop both the reactivity and proactivity sides of organizational agility in achieving digital transformation that involves fundamental changes at different levels of the organization.

Originality

This paper explores the role of organizational agility in digital transformation through an integrative review of the relevant literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the footwear industry’s resilience to external changes in an attempt to provide insights into strategies that can define effective organizational responses to environmental stimuli. In this sense, it is important to understand how companies have adapted to the exogenous shocks. Thus, this paper addresses the impact of the exogenous shocks like COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia–Ukraine war and energy crisis in the European Union and focuses on the potential resilience strategies implemented by the footwear industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a qualitative approach, 3 interviews were carried out on the structural basis of the footwear industry, namely at an associative and technological level, and 11 in footwear companies.

Findings

This study shows that the exogenous shocks forced changes in the nature of business, namely: (1) manufacturers entered the B2C segment, shortening the supply chain; (2) it provided changes at the strategic level (greater focus on the development of operational and logistics strategies) and digitization (digital transformation to support the execution of essential activities); (3) development of new products (emergence of a market opportunity that combines the concepts of sporty and classic shoes).

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to the footwear industry, does not address how cultural, social or behavioral differences in specific markets may impact adaptation to exogenous shocks, and focuses on recent exogenous shocks, without analyzing similar past events for historical comparisons. It also does not explore the direct financial impact of the suggested strategies.

Practical implications

This study focuses on strategic business adaptation in crisis scenarios, showing the importance of flexibility and resilience, suggesting specific practices to improve supply chain resilience. This can help companies reduce vulnerabilities in the face of global disruptions.

Social implications

This study provides an important contribution to contingency theory, by demonstrating that companies need to adjust their structures and strategies in response to exogenous shocks.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the concept of resilience to find out what strategies should be adopted to respond to external changes.
