Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to contribute to empirical research on individual ambidexterity drivers. This paper analyzes the relationships between inclusive leadership, team knowledge acquisition, team knowledge sharing, digital tools usage and individual ambidexterity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a questionnaire survey of high-tech and manufacturing enterprises in China and obtained 75 leader questionnaires and 365 employee questionnaires. The hypotheses were tested using hierarchical and cross-level regressions.

Findings

The research indicates that inclusive leadership improves team knowledge acquisition and sharing. However, only team knowledge sharing significantly boosts individual ambidexterity, and not team knowledge acquisition. Thus, inclusive leadership fosters individual ambidexterity primarily through team knowledge sharing. Digital tools usage strengthens the impact of inclusive leadership on team knowledge sharing, thereby intensifying its effect on individual ambidexterity. However, digital tools usage weakens the effect of inclusive leadership on team knowledge acquisition.

Originality/value

First, this study addresses the call for research on ambidexterity at different levels, revealing the heterogeneous impact of team knowledge acquisition and sharing on individual ambidexterity. Second, this study developed a theoretical model to explore how leadership affects individual ambidexterity. Third, this study responds to the question that digitalization has won, but has leadership lost by investigating the role of digital tools usage in the relationship between inclusive leadership and team knowledge integration.

Abstract

Purpose

Users’ active participation in platform value co-creation is the key to the development of crowdsourcing logistics platforms, especially the active participation of the crowdsourcee who provide logistics services. However, driven by self-interest, coupled with loose links among subjects on the platform ecological chain, it is difficult for users to effectively form value co-creation intentions. This study aims to explore how platform governance affects crowdsourcees’ intention to participate in value co-creation on the platform through individual cognition.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on social cognitive theory (SCT), this study built a research model and took the crowdsourcee on China’s well-known crowdsourcing logistics platforms as the investigation object, using the collected 302 valid survey data to test the model.

Findings

The results showed that platform governance mechanisms have a significant influence on crowdsourcees’ intention to participate in value co-creation on the platform, either directly or through crowdsourcee cognition, and the impact is different. The crowdsourcee cognition plays a mediating role between platform governance mechanisms and crowdsourcees’ intention to participate in value co-creation on the platform, and the mediating effect of value acquisition perception (VAP) is significantly higher than self-efficacy (SE).

Originality/value

The results provided references for crowdsourcing logistics platforms to develop a targeted governance mechanism to promote the platform to achieve value co-creation.

Abstract

Purpose

To assist firefighters in extinguishing fires more safely and efficiently, this paper aims to present an eversion-growing firefighting robot that overcomes the maneuverability constraints of existing firefighting robots, which hinder their ability to approach fire sources effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

The robot uses an everting tube as the body, with the cavity formed during eversion to deliver water to the tip. The loading capacity models are extended by considering the mechanical reinforcement provided by the contact between the everting tube and obstacles. Then the authors design a steering mechanism based on the Yoshimura-ori structure to ensure the robot’s steering capabilities. Furthermore, the authors present a new tip mount for the eversion-growing robot in fire conditions.

Findings

Experiments demonstrate the robot’s ability to navigate obstacles effectively using the Yoshimura-ori steering mechanism and perform firefighting tasks successfully.

Originality/value

The robot innovatively overcomes traditional firefighting limitations and integrates the eversion-growing structure with the Yoshimura-ori steering mechanism, demonstrating effective obstacle-traversing capabilities in performing tasks.

Abstract

Purpose

High-speed turnouts are more complex in structure and thus may cause abnormal vibration of high-speed train car body, affecting driving safety and passenger riding experience. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the data characteristics of continuous hunting of high-speed trains passing through turnouts and propose a diagnostic method for engineering applications.

Design/methodology/approach

First, Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) is performed to determine the first characteristic component of the car body’s lateral acceleration. Then, the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is performed to calculate the marginal spectra. Finally, the presence of a continuous hunting problem is determined based on the results of the comparison calculations and diagnostic thresholds. To improve computational efficiency, permutation entropy (PE) is used as a fast indicator to identify turnouts with potential problems.

Findings

Under continuous hunting conditions, the PE is less than 0.90; the ratio of the maximum peak value of the signal component to the original signal peak value exceeded 0.7, and there is an energy band in the STFT time-frequency map, which corresponds to a frequency distribution range of 1–2 Hz.

Originality/value

The research results have revealed the lateral vibration characteristics of the high-speed train’s car body during continuous hunting when passing through turnouts. On this basis, an effective diagnostic method has been proposed. With a focus on practical engineering applications, a rapid screening index for identifying potential issues has been proposed, significantly enhancing the efficiency of diagnostic processes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the sentiment connectedness among 10 European stock markets between January 2020 and July 2022, associating such connectedness with the level of the geopolitical risk index.

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, a time-varying parameter vector autoregressive connectedness framework is used.

Findings

Results show a high degree of sentiment connectedness. Overall, the sentiments of Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Italy are net transmitters of shocks while those of Poland, Sweden, Norway and Romania are net receivers. Additional evidence indicates that when geopolitical risks increase, the sentiment connectedness tends to decrease. However, the reverse holds under extremely high levels of geopolitical risks.

Originality/value

Overall, this study provides some significant contributions to the literature. First, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is among the first few studies to examine the dynamic connectedness among stock market sentiment across countries. This issue needs special consideration for European countries because of their close geographical distance and strong integration due to the European Union’s co-development strategies. Second, the association of sentiment connectedness with geopolitical risk is examined for the first time. This is even more meaningful in the context of growing geopolitical risks stemming from the Ukraine war, which could affect international financial markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies have rarely integrated the financing modes of a capital-constrained manufacturer with the choices of online sales strategies. To address this gap, the authors study how a manufacturer selects optimal financing modes under different sales strategies in three dual-channel supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper considers three sales strategies, namely, combining a traditional retailer channel with one of the direct selling, reselling and agency selling channels, and two common financing modes, namely, bank financing and retailer financing. The authors obtain equilibrium outcomes of the manufacturer and traditional retailer and then provide the conditions for them to select optimal financing modes under three sales strategies.

Findings

The results indicate that the manufacturer’s financing decisions rely on the initial capital and interest rates, and the manufacturer selects retailer financing only if the initial capital is relatively larger. In terms of financing mode options, the retailer financing mode is more beneficial for the manufacturer under the three sales strategies. From the perspective of sales strategies, the direct selling model is more beneficial. In addition, the higher the consumer acceptance of the online channel, the more profits the manufacturer obtains.

Practical implications

This paper provides suggestions on how the capital-constrained manufacturer chooses financing modes and sales strategies.

Originality/value

This paper integrates the financing mode and different sales strategies to investigate the manufacturer’s optimal operational decisions. These sales strategies allow us to investigate the manufacturer’s optimal financing modes in the presence of both different financing modes and sales strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to devise a framework for mapping and designing business ecosystems and to demonstrate its effectiveness in crafting digital transformation for traditional marketplaces.

Design/methodology/approach

A digital business ecosystem framework is developed as a Value Exchange Network (VEN) to analyze both the existing marketplace business ecosystem and a prospective digital marketplace ecosystem. The transformation process is divided into four stages. The first stage begins with describing the case and mapping it onto the framework as a business ecosystem depicted in a Value Exchange Network Diagram (VEND). In the second stage, a future or new business ecosystem is designed and represented using VEND. The third stage involves developing guidelines for the digital transformation. Finally, the fourth stage focuses on creating a management tool to operate and expand the new digital business ecosystem.

Findings

Traditional marketplaces in Indonesia face significant threats from hypermarkets, supermarkets, minimarkets and the growing preference of the younger generation for digital marketplaces, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Our framework (VEN) offers a structured approach to support traditional marketplaces in undergoing digital transformation through four stages.

Research limitations/implications

This paper showcases the expressive power of our business ecosystem framework. The digital transformation of the traditional marketplace presented here serves as an example application of the framework. However, the framework has yet to be tested in a real-world digital transformation project.

Practical implications

This paper offers direction and guidelines for the digital transformation journey of traditional marketplaces using the VEN framework.

Originality/value

This paper uses an innovative framework for mapping, analyzing and constructing business ecosystems, presenting a four-stage method to outline the digital transformation of traditional marketplaces. The adoption of ecosystem thinking in the pursuit of digitally transforming conventional marketplaces is novel, offering a comprehensive approach to this transformation.
