Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the complex dynamics of sports sponsorship within the context of mixed martial arts (MMA). Specifically, it explores how audience attitudes toward MMA influence their perceptions of players and sponsors, and subsequently, how these attitudes affect brand perceptions and purchase intentions. Furthermore, this research examines the moderating effect of fans' attitudes toward MMA on the relationship between their attitudes toward sponsors and their purchase intentions. MMA was selected as the focus of this study due to its propensity to evoke more intense emotional responses than other sports, as evidenced by previous research.

Design/methodology/approach

Study 1 was conducted to systematically assess the emotional responses elicited by MMA. This preliminary study involved 277 participants. Building on the findings from Study 1, Study 2 employed an online survey to investigate the relationships among various constructs related to MMA. This survey was facilitated through an external portal and included a sample of 459 participants residing in the United States. The constructs measured in this survey were attitudes toward the player (ATP), attitudes toward the sponsor (ATS), perception of brand quality (PBQ), purchase intention (ITP) and attitudes toward mixed martial arts (ATM).

Findings

The study reveals that respondents rated MMA the most negatively among the analyzed sports, with the highest standard deviation, indicating that MMA evokes extreme emotional responses. The findings confirm that attitudes toward the player positively influence attitudes toward the sponsor, aligning with sponsorship-linked marketing theory. Moreover, positive attitudes toward the player were found to enhance perceptions of the sponsor’s brand quality. The research further demonstrated that attitudes toward the sponsor and perceptions of brand quality mediate the relationship between attitudes toward the player and purchase intentions, underscoring the complex nature of consumer decision-making in MMA sponsorship.

Originality/value

This research provides novel insights into the critical role of audience engagement and personal connection with sports in formulating effective sponsorship strategies. It emphasizes the need for marketers to tailor their approaches to align with the sport’s personal significance to the audience, employing narratives that resonate with their identities and values. Enhancing player-sponsor associations through co-branded campaigns and endorsements is essential. Furthermore, consistently maintaining high product quality and fostering emotional connections with the sport are key strategies to drive increased purchase intentions.

Abstract

Purpose

This research explores the concept of omnichannel fulfillment steering (OFS) and demonstrates how retailers can influence a consumer’s fulfillment decisions through commonly used financial incentives such as discounts, credits and the opportunity to avoid home delivery fees.

Design/methodology/approach

We present insights from two theoretically grounded experiments to examine how different types of financial incentives can be used by omnichannel retailers to steer consumers from home delivery toward three alternative order fulfillment methods (AOFM) – buy-online-pickup-in-store, curbside-pickup and ship-to-locker.

Findings

Our analysis suggests that an opportunity to avoid shipping fees (penalty-avoidance) is a more effective OFS nudge than offering discounts or store credits (rewards). No difference was observed between offering discounts or credits as steering mechanisms; further, no omnichannel steering benefits were observed among the tested AOFMs. Collectively, these findings provide possible justification for retailers’ prioritization of credits to foster customer in-store visits, thus encouraging greater customer engagement and facilitating cross-selling opportunities. Finally, we uncover a penalty-avoidance endowment effect for “free shipping” of purchases over the current industry-standard free shipping threshold.

Practical implications

Retailers might prioritize store credits over discounts as nudges to steer customers toward an AOFM, with buy-online-pickup-in-store offering the greatest benefits for most retailers. Furthermore, using penalty-avoidance OFS incentives over a typical free shipping threshold may increase AOFM selection rates but engender adverse customer reactions.

Originality/value

Advancing the concept of OFS, this study directly informs retailers’ omnichannel incentive programs to nudge customers back into the store. Countering intertemporal choice theory, we could not demonstrate that delayed incentives are less effective than immediate ones. Based on prospect theory, we identify a free shipping endowment effect at a specific reference point along a purchase amount continuum.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the prospective advantages of implementing accrual accounting in countries where such a transition is underway, with a focus on Italian municipalities. The research seeks to ascertain the requisite conditions, in public sector accounting mangers’ perception, for a useful transition from modified cash accounting to full accrual accounting within the Italian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted is Qualitative Comparative Analysis, which involves conducting a survey through semi-structured interviews with accounting managers in municipal accounting departments. The sample is drawn from municipalities in the Emilia-Romagna region with populations exceeding 15,000 inhabitants.

Findings

The study shows that some stakeholders have a tangible demand for financial statement information. They believe that accrual accounting statements provide accurate insights into municipal financial health and that these statements are comparable across municipalities. All these factors together constitute sufficient conditions for considering useful the implementation of accrual accounting in local governments, in the opinion of public sector accounting managers.

Originality/value

This paper contextualises the broader international debate on transitioning to full accrual accounting in the New Institutional Sociology framework. The Qualitative Comparative Analysis is an underutilised methodology within the field of public sector accounting, and the public sector accounting managers’ point of view is scarcely investigated in literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This research endeavours to achieve two primary objectives within the context of regenerative tourism (RT). Firstly, the study aims to explore the trends and conceptual structure of RT, mapping its scope through a bibliometric analysis. Building upon the knowledge garnered from the initial exploration, the second aim is to establish a regenerative stakeholder framework for tourism, grounded in biodiversity.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus were collected for a bibliometric analysis in this research. The merged database found a total of 42 publications.

Findings

Based on bibliometric analysis in Biblioshiny, six indicators were identified (e.g. the annual publications, the most cited studies, productive countries, journals and thematic map). Furthermore, the authors' keyword analysis was conducted using the VOSviewer software package, revealing four clusters, namely, stakeholders, ecotourism, circular economy and climate change.

Research limitations/implications

This research's scope is restricted to Scopus and WoS through 21 February 2024. Future research could broaden RT perspectives through different databases.

Practical implications

The research offers the RT stakeholder framework developed based on the RT and stakeholder theory.

Originality/value

This research advances awareness of the Earth's current needs and the literature on tourism stakeholders by establishing a biodiversity-based regenerative stakeholders' framework in which both human and non-human stakeholders can coexist.

Esta investigación tiene dos objetivos principales dentro del contexto del turismo regenerativo. El primer objetivo es explorar las tendencias y la estructura conceptual del turismo regenerativo, mapeando su alcance a través de un análisis bibliométrico. El segundo objetivo, basándose en el conocimiento obtenido en la exploración inicial, es establecer un marco de agentes del turismo regenerativo fundamentado en la biodiversidad.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

En esta investigación se recopilaron datos de la Web of Science (WoS) y de Scopus para realizar un análisis bibliométrico. La base de datos combinada encontró un total de 42 publicaciones.

Resultados

A partir del análisis bibliométrico en Biblioshiny se identificaron seis indicadores (por ejemplo, las publicaciones anuales, los estudios más citados, los países productivos, revistas y el mapa temático). Además, se realizó un análisis de palabras clave de los autores utilizando el software VOSviewer, que reveló cuatro grupos, a saber: agentes, ecoturismo, economía circular y cambio climático.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

El alcance de esta investigación se limita a Scopus y WoS hasta el 21 de febrero de 2024. Futuras investigaciones podrían ampliar las perspectivas del turismo regenerativo a través de diferentes bases de datos.

Implicaciones prácticas

La investigación ofrece el marco de los agentes del turismo regenerativo desarrollado a partir de la teoría del turismo regenerativo y los grupos de interés.

Originalidad/valor

Esta investigación avanza en el conocimiento de las necesidades actuales de la Tierra y en la literatura sobre los grupos de interés del turismo al establecer un marco de actores regenerativos basado en la biodiversidad en el que pueden coexistir agentes humanos y no humanos.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to empirically analyse the relationship between the business model and the evolution of employment during the Great Recession, based on data from 75 industrial companies in the Corredor del Henares in Guadalajara, a reference area for being one of the fastest growing economic and business areas in Spain in recent decades.

Design/methodology/approach

The concept of the business model has been incorporated into organizational theory and practice over the last 25 years and continues to attract the interest of the academic and business community. The most recent research found in the literature has confirmed the relationship between business model and business performance, being directly connected to business performance and, therefore, to the creation of employment. However, the conclusions of the available studies are not directly scalable, as they refer to a specific sector or market.

Findings

The result confirms the positive impact of the business model on results and specifically, that talent management, through the value proposition and technology, has an impact on improving business performance. The study specifically confirms that talent integrated in organizations has an impact on the performance through a solid value proposition, scalable and adaptable to changes in the environment and whose transformation must be led by the top management. Talent integrates key partners and considers corporate social responsibility, sustainability, security and transparency as key factors in its management.

Originality/value

Thus, providing new and relevant information for research and business practice, and its conclusions are generalisable thanks to the multi-sector and multi-territorial nature of the sample selected.

Abstract

Purpose

This systematic literature review (SLR) seeks to thoroughly investigate and synthesize existing research primarily focused on the role and impact of livestreaming technologies in the events industry. The review aims to uncover key trends and strategies associated with the integration of livestreaming in several event settings, including conferences, concerts and virtual events.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing a systematic approach, this review involves a meticulous search of the Scopus database and relevant literature using a predefined search string. The search is tailored to capture studies that specifically address livestreaming, with a focus on events such as conferences, concerts and other public gatherings.

Findings

This SLR uncovers the findings related to various aspects of livestreaming at events. Key areas of interest include the strategies employed by event organizers, audience experiences, technical requirements, monetization models, social media integration and the suitability of livestreaming in different event categories. By synthesizing the findings from the selected studies, this review provides an integrated framework of how livestreaming technologies impact event management, engagement and overall audience satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

While striving for comprehensiveness, this SLR acknowledges potential limitations inherent in the available literature. Variability in research methodologies, publication biases and evolving technologies may introduce limitations. Additionally, the scope is limited to English-language publications within the specified subject areas. These limitations will be transparently discussed to guide future studies and promote the efficient utilization of livestreaming technologies in the events industry.

Originality/value

The originality of this SLR hinges on its thorough examination of the current state of knowledge on livestreaming technologies in events. The identification of trends and strategies will offer valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners, guiding future research directions and informing strategic decision-making in the dynamic field of event management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to summarise key literature related to the Foundation for Learning and Literacy’s Touchstone 4 (creativity, the arts and imagination).

Design/methodology/approach

This article reviews a selection of relevant studies exploring the contributions of creativity, imagination and the arts to traditional literacy learning. The existing literature has been synthesised and summarised to provide readers with a broad understanding of the evidence supporting Touchstone 4.

Findings

The literature review reveals that all five arts subjects, along with creativity and imagination, contribute positively to students' literacy learning. Each arts subject enhances and extends different aspects of conventional literacy skills – such as reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening – while fostering the development of multiliteracies.

Originality/value

This article uniquely summarises existing research on the arts, creativity and imagination, highlighting how each area supports literacy development in school students.

Abstract

Purpose

Critical studies within the economic and administrative sciences are increasingly paying attention to the way markets shift responsibility to consumers for societal and personal goals, referring to this process as consumer responsibilization. This article advances a new approach to responsibilization theory with the aim of overcoming some of its limitations.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual approach is used to critique dominant post-structural understandings of consumer responsibility and to advance alternative ways of thinking about responsibilization regimes that highlight the embodied and embedded experiences of responsible consumers.

Findings

The article suggests that responsible consumption is embodied and embedded within neoliberal social structures characterized by inherent tensions and will produce strained experiences rather than skilled and empowered neoliberal subjects. The authors underscore the need for an empirical focus on the adaptational responses of consumers to responsibilization processes. With a focus on the frictional relationship between the idealization pressures involved in responsibilization processes and the real-world consequences embodied in consumer experiences, the conceptual approach may provide new ways to advance the concept of responsibilization as a critique of neoliberal marketization.

Originality/value

While responsibilization theory has been gaining widespread attention, this is the first paper to critically examine its limitations and offer an embedded-embodied perspective on consumer responsibility.
