Abstract

Purpose

Current catch documentation and traceability practices in the Philippines are paper-based. However, with technological advancements, a shift toward electronic documentation has become a global trend to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This study aims to determine the factors influencing fishers' preference for a mobile traceability platform and identify the challenges in achieving a digital tuna supply chain in Davao Region, Philippines.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 178 tuna fishers was conducted in select sites in Davao Region using a semi-structured questionnaire. Factors influencing fishers' preference for a mobile traceability platform were identified using logistic regression.

Findings

Results revealed that one-third of the fishers (34.5%) preferred a mobile traceability platform. Membership in organizations and higher educational attainment increased the preference for a mobile traceability platform. Meanwhile, respondents' knowledge was associated with a preference for paper-based traceability. This association between knowledge and preference was in the context of catch recording performed by government agencies and fisherfolk associations in landing sites. Intensified support aimed at increasing the fishers' literacy and access to technological devices, including the internet and smartphones, is emphasized to provide them with the basic requirements for participating in mobile traceability systems. Moreover, several challenges in implementing digital traceability beyond fisherfolk were identified.

Originality/value

This study amplifies the need for infrastructure and legislation to support the implementation of a digital tuna supply chain and eliminate IUU fishing.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the resilience theory and espousing the spiritual capital approach, the purpose of this study is to assess the indirect effect of religiosity on entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience through the intervening roles of coping with failure, perseverance, locus of control and optimism.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a quantitative design and gathers data from 125 entrepreneurs in Oman through questionnaires. A structural equation modelling approach is used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The study finds that entrepreneurs’ religiosity influences resilience indirectly through coping with failure, perseverance and locus of control. Surprisingly, optimism played a trivial role in this dynamic.

Originality/value

It has been well acknowledged that religiosity provides a pool of resources crucial to entrepreneurs’ survival and success. However, despite this intuitive link, the mechanism whereby religiosity enhances entrepreneurial resilience remains misunderstood. This is problematic as entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience is an important attribute for survival, especially during challenging times. Hence, this study advances the current understanding of the religiosity-resilience nexus by uncovering its underlying mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

Compared to the occurrence of conflict in general teams in organizations, conflict occurrence in entrepreneurial teams is more prevalent and intense. However, previous studies have found inconsistent relationships between entrepreneurial team conflict and performance, and the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain in the “black box.” Drawing on the motivated information processing in groups theory, this study aims to investigate how and when entrepreneurial team conflict influences entrepreneurial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected survey data from 190 entrepreneurs across 58 entrepreneurial teams in China. The hypothesized relationships were examined through path analysis using the Mplus7.0 program.

Findings

Entrepreneurial team relationship conflict is negatively related to entrepreneurial performance mediated through team behavioral integration. Conversely, there exists a curvilinear (U-shaped) relationship between entrepreneurial team task conflict and entrepreneurial performance, also mediated through team behavioral integration. Furthermore, the curvilinear relationship between entrepreneurial team task conflict and team behavioral integration is strengthened by team contractual governance, whereas the relationship between entrepreneurial team relationship conflict and team behavioral integration is not moderated by team contractual governance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurial team conflict and performance by identifying the mediating mechanism and boundary condition. The finding of a U-shaped relationship between entrepreneurial team task conflict and entrepreneurial performance underscores the uniqueness of the entrepreneurial team context, offering new empirical insights for future conflict research.

Abstract

Purpose

Using descriptions from participants of ten Australian Football League (AFL) Club boards, the authors offer a rare, in-depth account of board member perceptions of interpersonal relationships between board members and the relational conflict evident. These findings suggest that interpersonal behaviours related to egos, social awareness, transparency and trust, ultimately leads to dysfunctional conflict.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examined the leadership influence on board dysfunctional conflict using the concept of authentic leadership (AL). The authors dismantled board member interpersonal dynamics to explore whether AL may alleviate the issues associated with dysfunctional relational conflict.

Findings

In addition, we highlighted the President has a key leadership role, whereby if they are characterised by AL attributes, they can facilitate higher levels of trust amongst board members and ultimately minimise board fragmentation.

Originality/value

Practically, our findings assist boards to identify some of the behavioural antecedents to dysfunctional relationships, therefore assisting leaders to attenuate their influence on board fragmentation and improve board functioning.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the stock market performance of knowledge-intensive employee-owned firms.

Design/methodology/approach

It constructs a portfolio comprising stocks of employee-owned wealth management companies listed in the UK Employee Ownership Index. A simple equal-weighted portfolio simulation strategy with annual rebalancing is employed and returns are analysed for the period 01.2002–12.2015.

Findings

The employee-owned firms consistently generate significantly higher returns, averaging 13% per annum. During favourable market conditions, the returns are even more significant at 16.40% higher than the market average annual returns. The outperformance persists in single-year and five-year investment periods, full and sub-sample periods, including bullish, stable and challenging economic times and even at high transaction costs and zero dividends. This superior performance is linked to a positive feedback loop created by homogeneous knowledge-workers who are incentivised to perform better in employee-owned business setting through participative decision-making and exhibiting risk aversion skills.

Practical implications

Adoption of the employee ownership model of running a business can be highly rewarding within knowledge-intensive firms. This study emphasises the need for a comprehensive database of employee-owned companies, which is currently lacking in the UK.

Originality/value

No prior study could be found to have studied the relationship between employee-owned knowledge-intensive firms and their stock market performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Technological innovations are rapidly transforming service frontlines, resulting in increasingly complex service touchpoints. These touchpoints place greater demands on frontline employees (FLEs) to deliver a positive customer experience. Despite the considerable extant body of knowledge on FLE competencies, the literature on frameworks for managing the complexity of contemporary frontlines from the FLE’s perspective is sparse. This paper aims to fill this critical gap by developing a framework that enables FLEs to deliver positive moments of truth (MOTs) while ensuring the well-being of all actors involved.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a conceptual approach rooted in the organizational mindfulness and individual mindfulness literature as the theoretical lens. This is complemented by a comprehensive review of the FLE skills literature supported by marketplace examples to illustrate the optimal use of the said skills.

Findings

This paper proposes a conceptual framework of mindfulness orientation which delineates how FLE competencies underpinned by a set of key skills can deliver positive MOTs and actor well-being.

Research limitations/implications

The research is conceptual in nature and does not contain validation through empirical data.

Practical implications

This comprehensive skill set provides a clear roadmap for firms in both recruitment and developing training for their FLEs, thus contributing to practice.

Originality/value

Firstly, we present a conceptual framework of mindfulness, combining organizational mindfulness and individual mindfulness that will enable employees to help facilitate the creation of positive MOTs. Secondly, we develop a comprehensive set of employee skills that underpin the mindfulness orientation framework.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to enhance digital marketing processes by using design of experiments in safelist mailers and traffic exchange websites.

Design/methodology/approach

The research applies design of experiments to improve an online digital marketing website.

Findings

The findings show that design of experiments can help improve digital marketing quality by generating more interactions with safelist mailers and traffic exchange websites, reducing time spent in the marketing process, allocating the appropriate amount of credits to significant websites and avoiding product price increases.

Research limitations/implications

This research aims to increase awareness of the impact and applicability of design of experiments to digital marketing and demonstrates the application of design of experiments in any digital marketing process, including safelist mailers and traffic exchange websites.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study applying design of experiments within online marketing. This study can be leveraged by academics and marketing functions to demonstrate the benefits of design of experiments to the marketing function to improve process efficiency and resource utilisation.

Climate change caused by an increase in greenhouse gas emissions poses a threat to species on earth. Such emissions have been caused by activities that have increased the rate at which greenhouse emissions have occurred due to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes in recent decades. Without urgent intervention, the ability of earth’s citizens will be irrevocably altered. Hundreds of millions of people’s lives will effectively become extremely challenging. Deaths due to starvation, lack of water, storms and flooding will increase. The magnitude of the crisis confronting humanity has resulted in means the formation of what’s known as the ‘Net Zero’ target set by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2024), a United Nations body consisting of global experts on climate change in 1994. This chapter explains why climate change has occurred, what its impact may be and how intervention by governments as well as all organisations and individuals catastrophe can be avoided. There is an overview of subsequent chapters contained in this book.
