Abstract
In this paper, the theory of inequality of opportunity is applied to examine health inequality among adults in Spain. Using a survey module conducted by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) in 2017, the role played by and the contributions of circumstances, efforts and lifestyles, and demographic variables in explaining adult health inequality are assessed. Additionally, the mediating role of individual education in the relationship between circumstances and health is analyzed. The findings underscore the significant relevance of unfair factors (circumstances) and demographics in generating adult health inequality, as opposed to the minimal contribution of fair factors (efforts and lifestyles). Furthermore, education is shown to significantly influence health, mitigating the impact of certain circumstances and serving as a transmission channel for others. In light of these results, efforts and lifestyles alone are insufficient to counterbalance unfair circumstances beyond an individual’s control. Therefore, improving circumstances and early-life factors, or reducing their impact on health through the implementation of compensatory policies, is essential for reducing health inequality and promoting equal opportunities for inclusive development.

Abstract
Purpose
Amidst dynamic global changes, migrant workforce dynamics have become complex due to voluntary and forced migrations, coupled with talent competition. Paradoxically, many migrants experience deskilling and brain waste in host countries. To optimize migrant skills for enhanced job performance in fluctuating organizational and environmental contexts, it is vital to overcome this challenge. This study aims to verify the employees’ dynamic capabilities (EDC) based job performance model among migrants, exploring how the moderating effect of a meaning of life influences the relationship between EDC and job performance, considering job-related attitudes.
Design/methodology/approach
We conducted empirical research based on a survey of 453 Ukrainian migrants currently residing in Poland.
Findings
The results indicate that EDC influences job performance through person-job fit, work motivation, and job satisfaction. Particularly, migrants with a positive meaning of life show stronger relationships between EDC and job performance.
Originality/value
The article’s originality lies in exploring the concept of EDC within the context of migrant workers, bridging a gap in understanding how these capabilities impact job performance, particularly regarding brain waste and deskilling. The study delves into how EDC could mitigate the mismatch between migrant workers’ qualifications and job placements, thereby enriching international human resources management strategies to foster inclusive workplaces and enhance migrant workforce success.

Abstract
Disruptive technologies have changed the way that firms model their business approach. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of novel digital technologies (artificial intelligence [AI] and machine learning [ML]) and big data analytics on the digital transformation of digital marketing firms. This research study is based on a review of the extant literature, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Gaps in the extant research literature were identified and emerged that are directly linked with the impact of AI, ML and big data analytics on digital transformation for digital marketing firms. Potential opportunities for digital transformation in digital firms were also unlocked, as well as related challenges. The research informs practice and policy for the current trends and provides future research directions. The study was limited to the application of the PRISMA methodology, which is incapable of fully providing testable results for a given study. Complementary cross-sectional research studies using the same methodology in different areas of study with the same topic can be applied to check for relevancy and applicability. This study contributes to digital marketing, information communication technologies, information systems practice and theory building. In addition, it provides researchers with an agenda for future digital transformation research directions.

Abstract
Purpose
Enhancing employee competence is essential for an organization’s success, but it can be challenging due to the varying work practices across different sectors. This study aims to examine how high-involvement work practices (HIWPs) and creative self-efficacy contribute to competence development in public and private banks. It provides insights into the unique dynamics of each sector.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 373 bank professionals from Bangladesh were analyzed, comprising 156 individuals from public banks and 217 from private banks. The hypothesized relationships were examined using structural equation modeling.
Findings
Information sharing is a significant driver of competence in private banks, while empowerment is the primary determinant within public banks. Creative self-efficacy mediates this relationship, enhancing the influence of HIWPs on competence development. Furthermore, sectoral variances indicate that employment contracts and organizational contexts play a crucial role in shaping the impact of HIWPs on competence development.
Practical implications
Adapting HIWPs to different sectors’ needs can significantly enhance employee competence and overall organizational performance. By integrating creative self-efficacy into recruitment processes and promoting supportive work environments, organizations can further stimulate intrinsic motivation and facilitate the development of employee competencies. These insights offer practical guidance for HRM practices applicable to public and private sectors.
Originality/value
This research enhances existing literature by elucidating specific antecedents of competence within the banking sector. It provides practical insights for using individual motivators and human resource management strategies across various organizational contexts.

Abstract
Purpose
Many authors have recognised multiple research gaps at empirical and theoretical levels regarding the interplay between the management of intellectual capital (IC) and the development of innovation capabilities from a strategic approach to technological opportunities, especially in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). This paper endeavours to provide answers to some of these research questions by relying on empirical observations in the context of an emergent economy.
Design/methodology/approach
After reviewing the literature through the lenses of the IC and knowledge-based view, the paper operationalises IC as a formative construct and explores its relationships with Technological Orientation, Innovativeness and Innovative Performance. This investigation employs structural equation modelling to analyse data collected through a questionnaire from a sample of KIBS members in a cross-sectional study.
Findings
The research confirms the positive influence of human capital on a company’s Technological Orientation, which in turn impacts Innovative Performance in KIBS. Structural and relational capital positively affect Innovativeness and the latter directly impact performance. All other IC components were found to determine the dependent variables through a mediated effect.
Research limitations/implications
This research has several limitations. Firstly, it has to be stressed that the significance of the statistical findings is dependent on the sample size, and the results’ explanatory power and effect size cannot be extrapolated to other demographics in different regions or sectors. Secondly, it should be observed that the results of the empirical research can be affected by the respondents’ subjectivity in assessing the items and their perception of reality when providing the answers. Thirdly, this is a cross-sectional study, and results concerning, e.g. the Innovative Performance may be subject to change over a longer period of time, though items in this construct have inquired about results obtained over time. Finally, given the purpose of the research, the outcome may be limited to the research model design. Future research could attempt to replicate the results by investigating other demographics and other regions and by employing a longitudinal study.
Practical implications
The study highlights the value added by adequate management of all IC elements, as they affect the output of organisational business strategies and processes in an integrated manner. An organisational technological strategy that is based on up-to-date technologies, the embeddedness of technology in the organisational processes and the staff’s continuous technical/digital upskilling are conducive to competitive advantage and business success in KIBS. High competencies and skills that are continuously renewed through training as well as the acquisition of digital competencies, play an influential role in generating innovative capabilities that lead to business performance. Flexible and efficient business processes, the company’s support for informal knowledge sharing between employees and its ability to exploit new knowledge to sustain growth are prerequisites for KIBS’ success. Promoting an organisational culture of trust and collaboration, making the staff feel valued and satisfied and effectively using digital technologies for communication are all significant factors in supporting the development of innovation capabilities.
Social implications
This research proves that IC management, viewed as an integrated construct comprising human, structural and relational capital management, significantly affects Innovativeness through the development of technology-based innovative capabilities. Furthermore, in a context where KIBS (and other companies) nowadays compete in a digital environment, technology and technical knowledge are paramount for a company’s success. The study validates in an aggregated model the role played in innovation by the management of knowledge and technical knowledge embodied in the employees’ competencies and know-how, the management of tacit and explicit knowledge developed by the structural capital and the management of stakeholder knowledge accumulated by the relational capital.
Originality/value
This research takes a fresh and comprehensive perspective to investigate how IC management can impact Innovativeness and Innovative Performance in KIBS by focusing on the nexus with the organisations’ Technological Orientation. The paper makes an original contribution to research concerning IC, KIBS, technology and innovation based on empirical evidence and a new approach to assessing IC as an aggregate rather than by looking at individual components.

Abstract
Purpose
As a contribution to the social ties and dynamic capabilities literature, the purpose of this study is to examine the boundary role of the industrial factors (competitive intensity, dependence on suppliers and demand uncertainty) on the relationship between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) social ties (business ties and political ties) and firm performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 1,077 SME top-level managers in Turkiye. The proposed model is analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) path modeling in SmartPLS 4.0 software.
Findings
The results elucidate how demand uncertainty serve to moderate the influence exerted by both business and political ties upon the performance of SMEs. However, the moderating effects of competitive intensity and dependence on suppliers, although initially hypothesized, were not found to have a significant impact on the relationships.
Practical implications
The relevance of social ties of SMEs may depend on the industrial factor. Although both political and business ties are effective on the customer side, these ties may become irrelevant when it comes to competition and supplier relations. In competitive SME settings, where businesses are vying for similar markets, the effectiveness of ties might be questionable. In such cases, SMEs might invest in building in-house capabilities and competencies, rather than relying on their relational networks.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of how relational networks, which are considered as dynamic managerial capabilities, impact SMEs performance. It also fills an important gap by testing the boundary role of industrial factors on this relationship. The empirical data is collected from the Turkish context, which is also an original aspect of the study, considering most of the social ties literature has a limited focus on a few contexts. The results also indicate new areas for discussion and exploration, indicating potential avenues for further research.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the constituents of artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented knowledge management (AIKM) capability and its impact on clinical performance (CP) in the health-care sector. It further examines the mediating role of absorptive capacity (Abs Cap) and discusses the implications of these findings for marketing strategies, highlighting how enhanced CP through AIKM can lead to more effective and patient-centered marketing approaches.
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses a mixed-method design. A qualitative study through semi-structured interviews was conducted to explore the facets of AIKM. The synthesis of qualitative findings infused with the relevant literature to develop a hypothesized model of AKM, Abs cap and CP metrics (e.g. diagnostic accuracy, patient satisfaction and treatment effectiveness). A survey of health-care professional in India was conducted to assess the proposed model by using structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).
Findings
The results demonstrate a significant positive relationship between AIKM and CP. Moreover, Abs Cap mediates this relationship partially, highlighting its crucial role in translating improved knowledge access and analysis enabled by AI into enhanced clinical outcomes.
Research limitations/implications
The findings suggest that health-care organizations should invest in developing AIKM alongside strengthening Abs cap to maximize the positive impact of AI on CP and ultimately improve patient care. Future research can explore specific AIKM components and Abs cap facets influencing different aspects of CP.
Originality/value
This study represents a pioneering effort to conceptualize AIKM within the health-care context and empirically establish it as a higher-order factor. The inclusion of marketing strategies underscores the potential of AIKM not only in improving clinical outcomes but also in transforming health-care marketing. The mediating role of Abs Cap emphasizes the importance of organizational structures and processes that facilitate the absorption and utilization of knowledge, thereby contributing to both clinical and marketing excellence.

Abstract
Purpose
This study developed a theoretical model to test the relationship between digital capability and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and its effect on innovation performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed theoretical model was evaluated using partial least-squares structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. The data were obtained from a sample of 536 SMEs in Chile.
Findings
The proposed model presented two dimensions of digital capability: management and information and communication technologies (ICTs). Management models composed of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management systems are essential for optimizing organizational management. Meanwhile, ICTs facilitate the smooth flow of information within an organization, leading to improved efficiency in production processes. I4.0 is encouraged by exposing SMEs to base technologies such as data analytics. These results confirm that I4.0 influences innovation performance.
Practical implications
SME managers should encourage the development of digital capabilities to transition toward I4.0, as this can make SMEs more competitive and innovative in changing and dynamic scenarios.
Social implications
I4.0 adoption and the development of digital capabilities can directly affect employment and national economic growth.
Originality/value
Most studies focus on the organizational factors affecting SMEs’ I4.0 adoption. They do not, however, address the role played by current digital capability in I4.0 technology adoption and its effect on firms’ innovation performance.
Propósito
Este estudio desarrolló un modelo teórico para probar la relación entre la capacidad digital y la Industria 4.0 (I4.0) y su efecto en el desempeño de la innovación en pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYME).
Diseño/método/enfoque
El modelo teórico propuesto se evaluó mediante el uso de modelos de ecuaciones estructurales de mínimos cuadrados parciales y análisis comparativo cualitativo de conjuntos difusos. Los datos se obtuvieron de una muestra de 536 pymes de Chile.
Resultados
El modelo propuesto presenta dos dimensiones de la capacidad digital: la gestión y las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC). Los modelos de gestión compuestos por sistemas de planificación de recursos empresariales y de gestión de relaciones con los clientes son esenciales para optimizar la gestión organizacional. Por su parte, las TIC facilitan el flujo fluido de información dentro de una organización, lo que conduce a una mejora de la eficiencia en los procesos de producción. La I4.0 se fomenta exponiendo a las PYME a tecnologías de base como el análisis de datos. Estos resultados confirman que la I4.0 influye en el rendimiento de la innovación.
Originalidad
La mayoría de los estudios se centran en los factores organizativos que afectan a la adopción de la I4.0 por parte de las pymes, pero no abordan el papel que desempeña la capacidad digital actual en la adopción de la tecnología I4.0 y su efecto en el desempeño innovador de las empresas.
Implicaciones prácticas
Los gestores de las PYMES deben incentivar el desarrollo de capacidades digitales para realizar la transición hacia la I4.0, ya que esto puede hacer que las PYMES sean más competitivas e innovadoras en escenarios cambiantes y dinámicos.
Implicaciones sociales
La adopción de la I4.0 y el desarrollo de capacidades digitales pueden afectar directamente al empleo y al crecimiento económico nacional.

Abstract
This chapter examines how entrepreneurs are addressing some of society's greatest challenges by taking over some of the functions of government and charities. It's driving change, but is it the kind of change we want to see? The chapter examines the growing body of literature on entrepreneurship which looks at this question and focuses on some key areas. These areas, including entrepreneur values and motivation, prosocial behaviour, entrepreneurial education and more form the concepts that underpin both the research and the online training intervention I've developed. The chapter highlights one of the most important findings from a review of the existing literature; that the world needs people with prosocial values and motivations, and entrepreneurs as a group could make a significant contribution to society. In the chapter, there's also a discussion about what needs to happen to enable them to make that contribution and an examination of what the existing research says.

Abstract
Purpose
This systematic review paper aims to investigate seasonal ambient change’s impact on the incidence of falls among older adults.
Design/methodology/approach
The population, exposure, outcome (PEO) structured framework was used to frame the research question prior to using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis framework. Three databases were searched, and a total of 12 studies were found for inclusion, and quality appraisal was carried out. Data extraction was performed, and narrative analysis was carried out.
Findings
Of the 12 studies, 2 found no link between seasonality and fall incidence. One study found fall rates increased during warmer months, and 9 of the 12 studies found that winter months and their associated seasonal changes led to an increase in the incidence in falls. The overall result was that cooler temperatures typically seen during winter months carried an increased risk of falling for older adults.
Originality/value
Additional research is needed, most likely examining the climate one lives in. However, the findings are relevant and can be used to inform health-care providers and older adults of the increased risk of falling during the winter.
