Abstract
Purpose
Although separate studies on the influence of corrosion and fire exposure on the constitutive relationship of concrete and steel have been done, there is still a gap in knowledge on the influence of corrosion-temperature superimposition as nonlinear phenomenon. The current study is focused to investigate the response of hot-rolled steel bars subjected to corrosion-temperature superimposition.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the accelerated corrosion-impressed-current technique, hot-rolled specimens with different levels of corrosion were obtained. The hot-rolled rebars were first corroded to target levels such as (6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36%) and subsequently subjected to target temperatures (250 °C, 400 °C, 550 °C, 800 °C and 950 °C), before tensile tests were carried out to evaluate the residual mechanical response.
Findings
The outcomes showed a significant decline in the parameters governing the mechanical properties of steel reinforcement due to the combined damage due to corrosion and fire. Corroded reinforcement still showed ductile failure after exposure to fire. Moreover, the combined loss of load-bearing characteristics due to corrosion and fire has little influence on the modulus of elasticity. The outcomes of this investigation provide a theoretical database for the assessment of aged structural elements exposed to combination after exposure to fire.
Originality/value
The information concerning structural material's response to corrosion-temperature combined damage is still limited. The cover of the reinforcement is designed to safeguard the reinforcing bars from foreign agencies but is often damaged and spalled off due to corrosion, rendering the reinforcing bars directly exposed. The study aims at the experimental production of fire conditions in a corrosion-damaged infrastructure to cover the aforementioned research gap. The effects of corrosion being superimposed by exposure to elevated temperatures on key parameters affecting mechanical behavior were examined.

News media portrayals of war and conflict can serve to heighten negative effects for children living in conflict zones, but entertainment and curriculum-based media can be used strategically to mitigate or moderate those effects.

Abstract
In smart cities striving for innovation, development, and prosperity, hydrogen offers a promising path for decarbonization. However, its effective integration into the evolving energy landscape requires understanding regional intricacies and identifying areas for improvement. This chapter examines hydrogen transport from production to utilization, evaluating technologies’ pros, cons, and process equations and using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tool to assess these technologies based on multiple criteria. It also explores barriers and opportunities in hydrogen transport within the 21st-century energy transition, providing insights for overcoming challenges. Evaluation criteria for hydrogen transport technologies were ranked by relative importance, with energy efficiency topping the list, followed by energy density, infrastructure requirements, cost, range, and flexibility. Safety, technological maturity, scalability, and compatibility with existing infrastructure received lower weights. Hydrogen transport technologies were categorized into three performance levels: low, medium, and high. Hydrogen tube trailers ranked lowest, while chemical hydrides, hydrail, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, hydrogen pipelines, and hydrogen blending exhibited moderate performance. Compressed hydrogen gas, liquid hydrogen, ammonia carriers, and hydrogen fueling stations demonstrated the highest performance. The proposed framework is crucial for next-gen smart cities, cutting emissions, boosting growth, and speeding up development with a strong hydrogen infrastructure. This makes the region a sustainable tech leader, improving air quality and well-being. Aligned with Gulf Region goals, it is key for smart cities. Policymakers, industries, and researchers can use these insights to overcome barriers and seize hydrogen transport tech opportunities.

Abstract
Climate change continues to be one of the major threats to tourism development, with coastal destinations particularly vulnerable to impacts such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, hotter temperatures and the loss of ecosystem diversity. While the environmental and economic impacts of climate change are widely acknowledged, less research has identified the impacts on the destination community. This paper explores the concerns about climate change in a small coastal community and how responses to this threat by the destination's local government authority may affect its long-term social sustainability. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 government representatives and community members in the Livingstone Shire, Queensland, Australia. Thematic analysis identified several key themes including infrastructure, collaborative planning, climate impacts, response to climate change, vulnerability and achieving long-term social sustainability. This research makes an important contribution by proposing a theoretical model that demonstrates how achieving long-term social sustainability requires destination planning through stakeholder collaboration and community consultation and takes into account several dynamic factors at the destination level. The model also has practical implications and can be adopted by destination communities to encourage long-term planning that maintains and enhances social sustainability as part of a destination-wide response to climate change.

Abstract
Purpose
We investigate how information about the refusal and acceptance of offered resources affects the distribution of benefits to self and others in reciprocal exchanges. We distinguish contexts that allow individuals to know whether offered benefits were accepted or refused from contexts that do not. In the process, we also examine how the perceived probability of possible refusal and the actual experience of refusal affect the distribution of benefits.
Methodology
We conducted a controlled laboratory experiment.
Findings
Results show people give more when the context allows them to discern whether offers were accepted or refused, but having information about the structure of the network, which may increase the perceived probability of overt rejection, erases this effect. Results also show that in contrast to contexts that inform individuals about the acceptance or refusal of offers, the actual experience of being refused depresses giving.
Limitations and implications
This study examines giving behaviors in one specific network arrangement, leaving unanswered whether the findings reported here hold for larger, more complex networks. Future work should also examine how gender may affect giving behaviors in these contexts, with a particular focus on how it might affect responses to experiencing refusal.
Originality
Refusal in reciprocity has been undertheorized and methodologically excluded from exchange studies. We acknowledge that offering a resource does not mean one will accept it and investigate how uncertainty about whether an offered resource will be accepted or refused affects how people distribute resources. We also consider and experimentally test how the perceived probability and the actual experience of being overtly refused affect the distribution of resources.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to compare the differences between single- and multi-person interactions in virtual tourism, underpinned by the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework and media richness theory (MRT).
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, quantitative data gathered from questionnaires applied to 558 individuals was analyzed by using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The moderating role of interaction type was tested through multigroup analysis (MGA).
Findings
The results showed that vividness positively influenced telepresence, perceived attractiveness and authentic experiences; telepresence positively affected authentic experiences and perceived attractiveness; and authentic experiences and perceived attractiveness positively impacted willingness to visit in both interaction groups. A difference was detected between the two groups in that perceptions of media vividness were more easily transformed into a willingness to visit through telepresence in the multi-person interaction group. Interaction type moderated the effect of vividness on telepresence. The vividness of the media had a more significant effect on telepresence among those who participated in virtual tourism together.
Originality/value
In this study, a model was developed to explain how media vividness affected willingness to visit by considering the relationships between telepresence, authentic experiences and perceived attractiveness in virtual reality, as well as the social interaction aspect.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore mental health professionals’ views on adolescent attitudes towards their peers with mental health problems and the influence of parental, familial and societal environments on these attitudes.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative research design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen mental health professionals in Bangalore, India, with at least two years of experience working with adolescents. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data.
Findings
Mental health professionals reported diverse adolescent attitudes towards peers with mental health issues, ranging from support to bullying and exclusion. Family dynamics, peer influence and societal stigma were identified as significant factors shaping these attitudes.
Research limitations/implications
The remote interviews during the pandemic limited access to non-verbal cues and work settings. The study focused on professionals' views from Bangalore, not capturing the diverse needs of adolescents across India. Additionally, practitioners from urban settings might not represent the challenges of their rural counterparts. The high concentration of female participants hinders generalisability. Variable interview lengths and participant openness might introduce bias, likely influenced by experience and views on mental health awareness.
Practical implications
The findings underscore that adolescents' views on peer mental health are crucial for mental health professionals to design targeted interventions and support systems. Implementing programs that raise mental health awareness and reduce stigma can benefit schools and communities.
Social implications
This study highlights the necessity of a holistic strategy to tackle adolescent mental health. Creating supportive peer environments, encouraging open family communication, and combating societal stigma can foster a more inclusive and mentally healthy society for adolescents.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the growing body of research on adolescent mental health by providing insights into professionals’ views of peer attitudes. It highlights the need for interventions addressing family stigma, promoting open communication and using social media for awareness.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to (1) identify the factors that affect the adoption of virtual reality (VR) for spectator sports, (2) examine the differences in the factors among the four adopter categories (i.e. continuers, discontinuers, potentials and resistors) and (3) determine whether these factors are useful for discriminating among the adopter categories, based on the “diffusion of innovation” and “uses and gratification” theories.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 216 participants were included in the analysis. Logistic regression and multiple analyses of variance were conducted to identify the factors that affect the adoption of VRS and examine the differences in the factors between adopter and non-adopter as well as between the continuers, discontinuers, potentials and resistors.
Findings
This study found that actualized innovativeness, complexity, companionship and gender significantly affect user adoption of VR for spectator sports. There were significant differences in the factors among the four adopter categories. The factors were also useful in discriminating between the four adopter categories.
Originality/value
This study highlights how individuals embrace emerging technologies differently based on their adopter category characteristics. From a marketing perspective, the insights gained from this study can inform the development of targeted strategies, campaigns and user experiences for VR spectator sports (VRS). This approach promises new revenue streams for the spectator sport industry and offers solutions to challenges like declining viewership and digital marginalization. It underscores the potential success of VR technology in transforming the spectator sport industry.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore how intercultural competencies impact the employment of young people, and to showcase virtuous examples of practices by the University of Turin and the company Global Mindset Development.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing upon a comprehensive review of relevant literature, this paper highlights the theoretical foundations of intercultural competencies and their relevance to labor market integration. It examines their multidimensional nature, encompassing knowledge, skills, attitudes and awareness necessary for individuals to effectively navigate and engage with diverse cultural contexts. The paper then presents several good and promising practices realized by the University of Turin and the training and consultancy company Global Mindset Development. Furthermore, it addresses potential challenges associated with developing and implementing intercultural competencies in practice.
Findings
The study enriches the body of literature on the importance of intercultural competencies for young workers acquired through experiences such as international mobility for labor market integration.
Originality/value
The study presents some innovative approaches to training through experiential and mobility training programs. These new examples of practices can inspire further research and implementation.
