Abstract

Purpose

The imperative for sustainable energy systems is increasingly pressing as the world transitions toward renewable energy sources. Among these, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a viable option for wind energy harvesting. However, they face significant challenges, including material durability under varying wind conditions; the intricacy of material selection and performance; and the trade-off between wear resistance and triboelectric efficiency. This study aims to address the above issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Herein, a mode-switch TENG (MS-TENG) was designed to overcome these limitations and serve as a self-powered energy solution for Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks. The MS-TENG incorporates a multi-stage functional layer and an automatic mode-switching mechanism between contact and non-contact operation, thereby enhancing both efficiency and durability.

Findings

It is demonstrated that the MS-TENG achieves a maximum instantaneous output power of 0.069 mW with minimal mechanical wear, effectively capturing wind energy. Its capability to charge capacitors and power a range of electronic devices, such as temperature and humidity sensors, electronic watches and water immersion guards, underscores its practical utility across diverse settings.

Originality/value

This research situates the MS-TENG as a pioneering technology in smart sensor applications for future energy-harvesting endeavors, optimizing energy acquisition under fluctuating wind conditions and reinforcing the sustainability of IoT networks.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to review the literature on the prediction of cutting tool life. Tool life is typically estimated by predicting the time to reach the threshold flank wear width. The cutting tool is a crucial component in any machining process, and its failure affects the manufacturing process adversely. The prediction of cutting tool life by considering several factors that affect tool life is crucial to managing quality, cost, availability and waste in machining processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has undertaken the critical analysis and summarisation of various techniques used in the literature for predicting the life or remaining useful life (RUL) of the cutting tool through monitoring the tool wear, primarily flank wear. The experimental setups that comprise diversified machining processes, including turning, milling, drilling, boring and slotting, are covered in this review.

Findings

Cutting tool life is a stochastic variable. Tool failure depends on various factors, including the type and material of the cutting tool, work material, cutting conditions and machine tool. Thus, the life of the cutting tool for a particular experimental setup must be modelled by considering the cutting parameters.

Originality/value

This submission discusses tool life prediction comprehensively, from monitoring tool wear, primarily flank wear, to modelling tool life, and this type of comprehensive review on cutting tool life prediction has not been reported in the literature till now. The future suggestions provided in this review are expected to provide avenues to solve the unexplored challenges in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

The marine environment presents a great challenge to the anticorrosion properties of organic coatings applied on equipment. Since the compactness of coatings is critical in marine environments, a novel nepheline-epoxy resin (N-EP) composite was introduced into organic coatings to improve the interfacial compatibility between the pigments and the binder. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the N-EP composite in enhancing the corrosion resistance of the coatings in marine conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

These composite particles were prepared via the mechanical ball milling method at thermofield-assisted, leading to chemical bonding between inorganic nepheline and epoxy resin, the agglomeration of particles was avoided by this method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, particle size distribution, sedimentation and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis were used to verify the feasibility of thermal field-assisted mechanochemistry for achieving a direct reaction between epoxy resin and nepheline powder, as well as to determine the optimal reaction conditions. Additionally, water absorption tests, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope were conducted to assess the anticorrosive properties of the modified nepheline coatings.

Findings

The results further indicated that N-EP improved the barrier performance and mechanical properties of the coating. For example, after modified, the tensile strength of coating had increased from 41.96 ± 0.05–63.14 ± 0.05 MPa. This can be attributed to the less defective N-EP/binder interface and the uniform dispersion of N-EP in the coating. The optimal preparation conditions (500 r/min of ball grinding speed and 6 h of ball grinding time) for the composites were also studied for a superior corrosion resistance of the coating.

Originality/value

Thermofield-assisted mechanochemistry enables direct reactions between epoxy resin and nepheline powder, enhancing the dispersion stability and interfacial compatibility of N-EP. This modification improves coating compactness, reduces porosity and enhances corrosion resistance by strengthening the labyrinth effect on water diffusion.

Abstract

Purpose

In response to challenges in traditional professional development, educators are increasingly utilizing social media platforms to customize their learning experiences and facilitate their professional growth. This systematic literature review seeks to examine articles published between January 2018 and July 2023 to synthesize evidence on the ways in which teachers are leveraging social media to improve their teaching practices.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to guide the literature review process. First, the authors established synthesis questions, set up eligibility criteria and determined search engines and search terms to identify the relevant literature. Second, the authors sorted and selected from the preliminary article search and screened based on the established criteria. Finally, the authors analyzed each selected article’s content, which included coding, interpreting the themes and organizing the findings.

Findings

Teachers are increasingly using social media for professional development, engaging in collaboration, empowering connection, and relationship-building through teacherpreneurship. They take on various roles, from info-consumers and info-networkers to self-seeking contributors, vocationalists and lurkers. Despite these benefits, challenges remain, such as potential for unexpected misunderstandings, social comparison that can lead to low self-esteem, which can hinder effective engagement in social media-based professional development. Additionally, this paper observed a growing trend in scholarly articles on this topic, particularly from 2020, 2021 and 2022, highlighting its increasing relevance and impact on the educational community.

Research limitations/implications

This systematic literature review focused exclusively on studies involving in-service K-12 teachers as participants, excluding perspectives from preservice teachers, higher education instructors, instructional coaches and school administrators. While these other educational professionals undoubtedly offer valuable insights into improving teaching practices and contribute significantly to social media-based professional development, this review aimed to center the experiences of K-12 in-service teachers to understand their unique professional development needs and practices. Consequently, it does not capture the potential synergies between K-12 teachers and other educator groups, such as the ways in which school administrators might support or enhance in-service teachers’ professional development through social media. Future studies could explore these interactions more deeply to provide a fuller picture of the collective expertise within these groups.

Practical implications

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the value of social media for informal professional development, as shown by the increased number of publications on this topic during that period. However, some social media platforms prioritize consumerism over educational resources, emphasizing the need for educators to critically evaluate their sources. Teachers should be discerning in their resource selection, ensuring that educational references are credible and free of hidden costs.

Social implications

This study uncovered several unique patterns in how teachers use social media, revealing both benefits and challenges. Notably, some teachers are leveraging social media not only to build professional connections but also to engage in commercial activities. While this practice can create a supportive network – where teachers promote one another’s visibility, share products and seek support – it can also detract from the intended purpose of professional learning. The focus on brand-building and profit-making may overshadow authentic community-building and collaborative growth. Additionally, the presence of paid content introduces financial barriers, as many teachers have limited resources for professional development.

Originality/value

This study provides a comprehensive review of recent literature (January 2018 to July 2023) on teachers' use of social media for professional development and learning, offering fresh insights into emerging trends. Notably, findings of this study highlight the role of teacherpreneurship in fostering beneficial social connections within digital spaces, a factor that has gained prominence as teachers seek collaborative and supportive networks. Additionally, this research sheds light on lurking as a common strategy among teachers to avoid conflict and misunderstandings when engaging in social media-based professional development. Furthermore, by addressing various challenges, this paper presents suggestions for thoughtfully integrating social media into school professional development programs, with the intention of supporting the diverse needs of teachers and fostering their professional growth.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the rapid development of metaverse industry, the adoption rate of metaverse products is still very low. While prior studies mainly focused on investigating the motivators of metaverse adoption, this study explores the barriers affecting consumer intention to use metaverse products, utilizing the framework of innovation resistance theory (IRT).

Design/methodology/approach

Through a survey conducted in China, we examined the effects of variables such as usage barrier, value barrier, risk barrier, tradition barrier, image barrier, as well as the moderating effects of individuals’ innovativeness. Three hundred and seventy seven valid questionnaires were collected and hierarchical regression method was conducted to analyze the data.

Findings

Our findings reveal that usage and value barriers, as well as tradition barrier, significantly negatively influence consumer intention to use metaverse products. However, risk and image barrier do not exhibit a significant impact. Additionally, we discovered that individuals’ innovativeness positively influences consumer intention, indicating that users with higher innovativeness are more inclined to engage with metaverse products. Furthermore, innovativeness acts as a positive moderator, weakening the negative impact of tradition barrier on usage intention.

Originality/value

The study extends IRT by incorporating the role of individual innovativeness, providing a more holistic understanding of the factors that impede the widespread use of metaverse products. The findings are crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the negative influences of potential barriers, ultimately promoting the diffusion of metaverse products.

Abstract

Purpose

Current developments in the FinTech payment industry have shown a rapid revolution in Industry 4.0, and understanding the factors affecting individual acceptance of facial recognition payment (FRP) is crucial. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the benefits and risks of FRP system adoption in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The perceived risks and benefits framework is adopted as the foundation in this study to examine the various risks and benefits that users perceive, along with the trust factor, to study the relationships between these variables. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, and the hypotheses were tested using Partial Least Squares analysis on 277 responses.

Findings

The results revealed that perceived risk is a significant predictor of users' intention to use the FRP system. Privacy risk and financial risk significantly influence perceived risks, while security risk does not. Although convenience, perceived ease of use and perceived trust positively influence perceived benefits, perceived benefits do not significantly influence adoption intention. Moreover, perceived trust negatively affects perceived risks while positively affecting both perceived benefits and adoption intention. Additionally, personal innovativeness moderates the relationship between perceived risks and the intention to use the FRP system.

Practical implications

This study helps policymakers and service providers understand individuals’ concerns and expectations regarding FRP systems. It aids practitioners in developing strategies to build trust, address innovativeness differences and mitigate risks, serving as a roadmap for integrating these systems into Malaysia's financial landscape.

Originality/value

This study distinguishes itself from prior research by evaluating FRP system adoption in Malaysia through the lens of perceived risks and benefits framework. It also explores personal innovativeness as a moderator, examining its impact on the relationship between usage intention and perceived risks and benefits. Additionally, it highlights perceived trust as a crucial factor influencing individuals' intention to adopt FRPs.

Abstract

Purpose

Maximum k vertex cover problem is a significant combinatorial optimization problem with various applications, such as transportation planning, social networks and sensor placement. Up to now, no practical algorithm has ever been proposed to solve this problem. Therefore, this paper aims to present an efficient local search algorithm LSKVC combining three methods for it.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the quick incremental evaluation method is proposed to update the related vertex scores following each addition or removal incrementally rather than recalculating them, which can speed up the algorithm. Second, the configuration checking method forbids vertices whose configuration has not changed since the last removal from being added into the candidate solution again, which can avoid the cycling problem effectively. Third, the two-stage exchange method swaps the pairs of inside and outside vertices separately rather than simultaneously, which can guarantee the tradeoff between the accuracy and complexity of the algorithm.

Findings

The proposed algorithm LSKVC is compared with the traditional GRASP algorithm and the well-known commercial solver CPLEX on DIMACS and BHOSLIB benchmarks. For the best solutions, the LSKVC algorithm is significantly superior to GRASP and CPLEX on DIMACS instances and the CPLEX solver fails, and the LSKVC algorithm slightly outperforms GRASP on the BHOSLIB instances. In addition, we undertake comparative studies of the offered methodologies and demonstrate their efficacy.

Originality/value

In previous research, the focus on the maximum k-vertex cover problem primarily centered around exact algorithms and approximation algorithms, with limited application of heuristic algorithms. While heuristic algorithms have been well-explored for the closely related Minimum Vertex Cover problem, they have seen limited application in the context of the maximum k-vertex cover problem. Consequently, existing algorithms designed for the Minimum Vertex Cover problem do not exhibit satisfactory performance when applied to the maximum k-vertex cover problem. In response to this challenge, we have undertaken algorithmic improvements specifically tailored to address this issue.

Abstract

Purpose

The Grey System Theory (GST) is an emerging area of research within artificial intelligence. Since its founding in 1982, it has seen a lot of multidisciplinary applications. In just a short period, it has garnered some considerable strengths. Based on the 1987–2021 data collected from the Web of Science (WoS), the current study reports the advancement of the GST.

Design/methodology/approach

Research papers utilizing the GST in the fields of economics and education were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) platform using a set of predetermined keywords. In the final stage of the process, the papers that underwent analysis were manually chosen, with selection criteria based on the information presented in the titles and abstracts.

Findings

The study identifies prominent authors, institutions, publications and journals closely associated with the subject. In terms of authors, two major clusters are identified around Liu SF and Wang ZX, while the institution with the highest number of publications is Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Moreover, significant keywords, trends and research directions have been extracted and analyzed. Additionally, the study highlights the regions where the theory holds substantial influence.

Research limitations/implications

The study is subject to certain limitations stemming from factors such as the language employed in the chosen literature, the papers included within the Web of Science (WoS) database, the designation of works categorized as “articles” in the database, the specific selection of keywords and keyword combinations, and the meticulous manual process employed for paper selection. While the manual selection process itself is not inherently limiting, it demands a greater investment of time and meticulous attention, contributing to the overall limitations of the study.

Practical implications

The significance of the study extends not only to scholars and practitioners but also to readers who observe the development of emerging scientific disciplines.

Originality/value

The analysis of trends revealed a growing emphasis on the application of GST in diverse domains, including supply chain management, manufacturing and economic development. Notably, the emergence of COVID-19 as a new research focal point among GST scholars is evident. The heightened interest in COVID-19 can be attributed to its global impact across various academic disciplines. However, it is improbable that this interest will persist in the long term, as the pandemic is gradually brought under control.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined interactional metadiscourse markers in Q1 and Q3–Q4 political sciences and creative arts abstracts.

Design/methodology/approach

The corpus comprised 80 abstracts of articles published in Social Science Citation Index journals from 2011 to 2022 (40 in creative arts; 40 in political science). An analysis was conducted using Hyland’s (2005) interpersonal model for the distribution of hedges, boosters, self-mentions, attitude markers and engagement markers.

Findings

The analysis identified 598 interactional markers, with 61.9% in political science abstracts and 38.1% in creative arts abstracts. The political science writers were more into getting the readers involved in the argument (60.2 interactional markers per thousand words) than the creative arts writers (32.9 interactional markers per thousand words). For both disciplines, booster was the most frequently used marker followed by hedging, self-mention, attitude marker and engagement marker. Based on the total number and type of interactional marker, the creative arts abstracts in Q1 and Q3–Q4 journals were similar. However, the Q1 political science abstracts had a stronger authorial presence than the Q3–Q4 political science abstracts. The greater visibility of the Q1 political science writers was reflected in more frequent boosters, hedges and self-mentions. They were stronger in asserting their propositions with confidence.

Research limitations/implications

As is evident from past studies, each discipline has its own uniqueness in writer-reader engagement. The study did not investigate possible influences of cultural background on the use of interactional markers for engagement by referring to the background of the writers.

Practical implications

Academic writing courses can employ the findings on interactional metadiscourse markers for teaching college and university students to produce research reports that fit the conventions of the community of practice.

Social implications

The findings indicate that differences in interactional metadiscourse use by discipline and journal tier was more obvious in the political sciences than creative arts. This means that there is a greater focus on authorial identity in the political sciences. As for journal tier, the creative arts researchers are similar in the style and there is less demarcation in the quality of writing with respect to reader-writer engagement.

Originality/value

The study provides new insights on greater reader interaction by discipline and journal tier in the political sciences than in the creative arts.
