Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether or not residential properties closer to landfill sites have lower offer values by the developers. That is, by analyzing real estate data and landfill site locations, the study seeks to provide insights into whether properties situated closer to landfill sites tend to have a lower offer values than those located farther away.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is exploratory in nature, and a case study approach is applied. A landfill site named “Uruli Devachi” is selected in the region of Pune district, and data is collected from 102 developers selling residential projects within a radius of 15 km (about 9.32 mi). The gathered data is analyzed by using basic descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. The OLS regression helps to determine whether there is a relationship between the distance of a residential property from a landfill site and its offer value.

Findings

The findings suggest that landfill sites have a detrimental impact on residential property offer values, with the negative impact increasing with proximity to a landfill site. The negative effect seems to vanish after over 10 km (about 6.21 mi). The developers provide extra facilities including a clubhouse, a children’s play area, a gym and a swimming pool in an effort to mitigate the negative effects of the landfill site on residential properties.

Practical implications

The findings of this study could have implications for property developers, real estate professionals and policymakers in understanding how landfill proximity might impact property offer values.

Originality/value

This study presents many novelties for the Indian housing market: the landfill sites do have a negative effect on the offer value of residential property; the closer the residential property to a landfill site, the higher the negative effect. Further, the developers try and mitigate the negative effect of landfill sites on residential properties by providing additional amenities such as a clubhouse, children’s play park, gym and swimming pool.

Abstract

Purpose

The study is an attempt to find the major risks faced by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in construction business in India. Further, the study attempts to find how MSMEs mitigate those risks.

Design/methodology/approach

Toward the objective of study, the authors used a case-based qualitative research design. Four firms were selected, and their owners and selected employees/partners were interviewed. Each firm is presented as an independent case to highlight the core risk management (RM) philosophy of each firm. This was followed by a thematic analysis to arrive at the major risks involved in MSME construction projects and their mitigation strategy.

Findings

MSME firms engaged in the construction business in India are not keen on following formal RM practices because they believe that it makes the bid unviable. MSMEs find it difficult to identify most of the problems in a construction project due to an uncontrolled environment and believe that it is best to resolve the issues as and when they occur. They have acquired tacit knowledge on hindrances and deal with them as and when they occur. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong is the basic philosophy.

Research limitations/implications

A small sample size makes the generalization of its findings difficult.

Practical implications

MSMEs cannot afford to hire specialists in project RM due to financial constraints. Hence, it would be worthwhile sending experienced employees for a short duration of training on the same.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors knowledge, it is a first-of-its-kind study focusing on RM practices of MSME, particularly in the construction sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the outcomes of an analysis on day by day task – journey planning conduct of senior citizens by using a modern dynamic model and a family unit travel overview, gathered in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, of India in 2018. Design/methodology/approach

Abstract

In today's digitised world, human resource management (HRM) faces challenges due to emerging technologies. Among these, virtual reality (VR) has become particularly significant as it reshapes critical aspects of HRM by offering immersive experiences. Although VR holds strategic value for HRM, integrating it effectively is challenging and cannot be achieved overnight. This chapter is dedicated to studying organisations that seek to embrace VR as a novel approach to HRM. It covers several key areas: VR technology, its applications in HRM, strategic benefits, drawbacks and implementation challenges, while highlighting contentious issues that require attention. In conclusion, the study suggests that overcoming obstacles to manage change may help bridge the gap to the desired outcomes. Additionally, the way the technology is utilised will determine the benefits ultimately received.

Abstract

Purpose

Nanofluids are used in technology, engineering processes and thermal exchanges. In thermal transfer processing, these are used for the smooth transportation of heat and mass through various mechanisms. In the current investigation, we have examined multiple effects like activation energy thermal radiation, magnetic field, external heat source and especially slippery effects on a bioconvective Casson nanofluid flow through a stretching cylinder.

Design/methodology/approach

Several studies used non-Newtonian fluid models to study blood flow in the cardiovascular system. In our research, Lewis numbers for bioconvection and the influence of important parameters, such as Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis effects, are also considered. This system is developed as a partial differential equation for the mathematical treatment. Well-defined similarity transformations convert partial differential equation systems into ordinary differential equations. The resultant system is then numerically solved using the bvp4c built-in function of MATLAB.

Findings

After utilizing the numerical approach to the system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), the results are generated in the form of graphs and tables. These generated results show a suitable accuracy rate compared to the previous results. The consequence of various parameters under the assumed boundary conditions on the temperature, motile microorganisms, concentration and velocity profiles are discussed in detail. The velocity profile decreases as the Magnetic and Reynolds number increases. The temperature profile exhibits increasing behavior for the Brownian motion and thermal radiation count augmentation. The concentration profile decreased on greater inputs of the Schmidt number and magnetic effect. The density of motile microorganisms decreases for the increased value of the bio-convective Lewis number.

Originality/value

The numerical analysis of the flow problem is addressed using graphical results and tabular data; our reported results are refined and novel based on available literature. This method is useful for addressing such fluidic flow efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

The current investigation is concerned with the Soret effect along with chemical reaction and radiation on flow of an electrically conductive, viscous fluid through a perpendicular plate, which is porous with oscillatory suction. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of first-order temperature and chemical reaction and the transverse magnetic field characteristics. The closed form of solutions are obtained using the governing equations for concentration, energy and momentum. The perturbation technique was applied to find the result for the velocity field, temperature profiles and concentration distributions. Furthermore, the impact of various nondimensional parameters on fluid flow variables on the temperature field, velocity field and concentration dispersal was analyzed and the results were depicted graphically. Moreover, the skin friction and the rate of mass transfer (local Sherwood number) were analyzed using tables. In this work, an unsteady 2D flow of a laminar, viscid (Newtonian), electrically conducting fluid across a semi-infinite perpendicular permeable plate under motion in its plane (x-axis) embedded in a constant permeable structure was investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, an unstable 2D flow of a laminar, viscid (Newtonian), electrically conducting fluid across a semi-limitless perpendicular permeable plate under motion in its plane (x-axis) embedded in a constant permeable structure was investigated. The medium is considered to be under a transverse magnetic field with concentrated buoyancy effects. Furthermore, it is considered that no voltage is supplied, which indicates that there is no electrical field. The fluid properties are considered to be uniform. The concentration of the imparting species is considered as C′w at the plate; the concentration of the specimens away from the wall, C′8, is considered to be limitlessly less. The first-order chemical reaction is considered to be seen in the flow. Due to the semi-limitless plane surface considerations, the flow parameters are the functions of y′ and the time t′ only. The oscillatory suction velocity of the fluid at the plate normal to it is v′; initially, the plate relocates with the oscillatory velocity u′, in the direction of x that is in its plane. The pressure gradient is toward the x-axis.

Findings

The analytical solutions were obtained using the above analytical method for a few values of the governing parameters, such as the magnetic parameter (M), the permeability parameter (K), Schmidt number (Sc), chemical reaction parameter (Kr), Grashoff number for the concentration (Gm), Radiation parameter (N), Prandtl number (Pr), Chemical reaction parameter (Kr), Grashof number for heat transfer (Gr) and Heat source parameter (s). The influence of M, K, Sc, Kr, Gm, N, Pr, Kr, Gr and s on the fluid velocity, temperature and the concentration over the semi-infinite porous plate was obtained. Furthermore, the numerical computation was carried out using MATLAB.

Originality/value

In this chapter, the analysis of a free convective flow of a viscid compact, electrically conductive fluid was discussed during its flow through a plate in permeable condition with oscillatory suction with first-order temperature and chemical reaction and the transverse magnetic field. The problem formulation and the results were discussed. The following chapter explain the Soret effect of mass transfer and radiation with heat source on magnetohydrodynamics oscillatory viscoelastic fluid in a channel filled with porous medium.

Abstract

Purpose

This work provides an overview of academic articles on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. It delves into the innovation process, encompassing a two-stage trajectory of exploration and development followed by dissemination and adoption. To illuminate the transition from the first to the second stage, we use prospect theory (PT) to offer insights into the effects of risk and uncertainty on individual decision-making, which potentially lead to partially irrational choices. The primary objective is to discern whether clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) can serve as effective means of “cognitive debiasing”, thus countering the perceived risks.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) of the adoption of clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) in healthcare. We selected English articles dated 2013–2023 from Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed, found using keywords such as “Artificial Intelligence,” “Healthcare” and “CDSS.” A bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate literature productivity and its impact on this topic.

Findings

Of 322 articles, 113 met the eligibility criteria. These pointed to a widespread reluctance among physicians to adopt AI systems, primarily due to trust-related issues. Although our systematic literature review underscores the positive effects of AI in healthcare, it barely addresses the associated risks.

Research limitations/implications

This study has certain limitations, including potential concerns regarding generalizability, biases in the literature review and reliance on theoretical frameworks that lack empirical evidence.

Originality/value

The uniqueness of this study lies in its examination of healthcare professionals’ perceptions of the risks associated with implementing AI systems. Moreover, it addresses liability issues involving a range of stakeholders, including algorithm developers, Internet of Things (IoT) manufacturers, communication systems and cybersecurity providers.
