Abstract

Vietnam is firmly committed to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals articulated in the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Goal 4 concerns quality education, and target 4.3 refers to ensuring access by all men and women to quality and affordable technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university education. In 2017, the Prime Minister issued a directive that included five actions to be taken by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training to achieve target 4.3 in the context of the higher education sector. This chapter provides an opportunity to review some challenges the Ministry faces in implementing the five actions specified.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the effect of intellectual capital (IC) and market capitalization (MC) on corporate investment decisions (ID) through the mediating and moderating effects of knowledge/information sharing (KS) and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

With the use of SPSS 26 and SmartPLS version 3.0, the partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique is employed with 1,036 observations to examine the effects.

Findings

Our findings show that IC and social interactions (SI) have a positive effect on KS. KS affects positively both MC and ID. KS has the mediating and moderating effects while the Covid-19 has the moderating impact on ID.

Practical implications

This research suggests that company leaders should understand the important role of IC and MC in enhancing ID through KS. They should pay attention to MC to enhance their investment and SI among employees, partners, consumers and authorities should be encouraged.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing literature by employing the perceptual scale to examine the effect of IC and MC, the mediating and moderating effects of KS, and analyze the moderating role of the Covid-19 on ID. It also expands the current models by including the Covid-19 and MC to clarify the ID determinants. New measurements of MC and the Covid-19 constructed are also another contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

The study attempts to examine the impact of the US-China trade war on Vietnamese exports to the United States, which has consistently served as a key market for Vietnamese goods and services in recent decades. The heterogeneous effects of the trade war on different export sectors are also evaluated.

Design/methodology/approach

The secondary data on Vietnamese exports to the US at a 6-digit level is collected from UN Comtrade. Besides, the difference-in-differences (DiD) method is employed to analyze the impact of the trade war on exports from Vietnam to the United States.

Findings

The findings revealed a 14% increase in total Vietnamese exports to the United States due to the trade war. Examining heterogeneous effects, certain industries, such as plastics, iron or steel articles, textiles and garments, and machinery and mechanical appliances, experience significant benefits. However, the study did not identify statistically significant effects on other sectors, such as electrical machinery products, agricultural and forestry, and furniture.

Originality/value

The paper is one among limited studies considering the causal effects of the trade war on a developing country, accounting for the heterogeneous effects on different export sectors.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study aims to explore the role of individual digital competencies, encompassing information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, safety and security, and problem-solving, in shaping cognitive determinants and influencing digital entrepreneurial intentions as well as investigates the moderating effect of performance expectancy of AI solutions on the relationship between digital competencies, cognitive determinants, and digital entrepreneurial intention.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 1326 MBA students in Vietnam with a stratified sampling approach, the second-order PLS-SEM is used to test the formulated hypotheses rigorously.

Findings

The study reveals that individual digital competencies, sculpted by information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, safety and security, and problem-solving, significantly impact cognitive determinants (attitude towards digital entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control), influencing digital entrepreneurial intentions. Performance expectancy of AI solutions also plays a crucial moderating role, enhancing the relationship between digital competencies and digital entrepreneurial intention.

Research limitations/implications

Some practical implications have been recommended for policymakers, educators, and entrepreneurs.

Originality/value

This research provides original empirical findings, validating the impact of a varied array of digital competencies on entrepreneurial mindsets/cognition and intentions. The introduction of performance expectancy of AI solutions as a moderator introduces a nuanced dimension to comprehending the interaction between technological skills and entrepreneurial intentions.

Abstract

Purpose

In the competitive realm of destination branding, understanding the factors that lead tourists to develop a deep emotional connection with a destination’s brand is essential. At the heart of this emotional bond lies destination brand love – an exceptionally profound sentiment transcending mere satisfaction or preference. This concept has recently garnered attention from both tourism academia and industry practice. However, there remains a void in exploring the factors and mechanisms that pave the way for tourists to develop deep affection for a destination’s brand. This study examines the influences of self-congruence and destination immersion on destination brand love. In addition, the linkages from the four facets of self-congruence to destination brand love via the mediating role of destination brand immersion are also scrutinized.

Design/methodology/approach

With data collected from 421 tourists in Vietnam, the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was applied to test the research model and hypotheses.

Findings

The results reveal that (1) ideal and ideal social self-congruence impact destination brand love, (2) all four facets of self-congruence impact destination brand immersion and (3) there is an indirect effect of the four facets of self-congruence on destination brand love, mediated by destination brand immersion.

Practical implications

The study’s findings provide evidence that destination characteristics must be symbolic of the destination brand and consistent with its image among tourists, which is essential in understanding the complex behavior of tourists. Indeed, the results indicate that facets of self-congruence significantly influence both destination brand immersion and destination brand love. Therefore, destination marketers should develop marketing strategies that emphasize personal relevance to the tourist destination to increase their sympathy and love for the destination.

Originality/value

Adapting self-congruence theory and the psychology of flow theory, this study presents a model that elucidates both the direct and indirect relationships among the four facets of self-congruence: destination brand immersion and destination brand love based on the aspects of congruence between tourists and destinations. From this, it helps to explore the factors and mechanisms that pave the way for tourists to develop deep affection for a destination’s brand.

Abstract

Introduction: To facilitate the effective operation of green credit, every nation should establish a framework of green credit policies. The banking system, particularly commercial banks, has implemented several regulations to encourage green credit and financial activities in general. The State Bank of Vietnam also emphasizes the development of green credit by utilizing management documents issued by the Government and the State Bank.

Purpose: The chapter focuses on statistical analysis and policy recommendations for green credit implementation in Vietnam, employing practical implications to support the development of macro-management policies that promote sustainable development.

Methodology: We use analysis methods, statistics, comparison, and synthesis of data on green credit at Vietnamese commercial banks to analyze the current situation.

Findings: Challenges arise during the execution phase due to the need for more legal documentation about management concerning risk assessment, standards, and subjects bestowed with green credit.

Practical implications: The government should build a solid legal framework with detailed guidance for all stakeholders relating to the green credit process. Commercial banks in Vietnam should develop various products and services related to green credit with attractive content to promote this kind of credit.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the extent of personal privacy concerns expressed by university students in Vietnam while using TikTok, the influence of peer interactions and social norms on privacy attitudes and behaviors and the strategies used by university students in Vietnam to mitigate privacy risks on TikTok.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was used to gather data on the following: the degree to which Vietnamese university students express concerns about their personal privacy while using TikTok; how peer interactions and social norms influence privacy attitudes and behaviors; and the strategies these students use to mitigate privacy risks on the platform.

Findings

Findings indicate that although university students exhibit a relatively low level of concern regarding their personal privacy on TikTok, peer influences and societal norms significantly shape their attitudes and behaviors on the platform. Moreover, students use several strategies to mitigate privacy risks, such as selective content sharing and refraining from engaging with unknown links.

Practical implications

These insights provide valuable implications for the development of targeted interventions and educational initiatives aimed at fostering a more privacy-conscious TikTok user community among university students in Vietnam.

Originality/value

This research fills a critical gap in the existing literature by focusing on the influence of social norms and peer influences on privacy attitudes and behaviors on social media platforms. While prior studies have explored various factors impacting privacy concerns on social media, the role of social dynamics has been understudied. Moreover, the research specifically addresses the lack of investigation into privacy concerns on TikTok, a platform rapidly gaining popularity among younger demographics.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to find suitable replacements for hypothesis testing and variable-importance measures.

Design/methodology/approach

This study explores under-used predictive methods.

Findings

The study's hypothesis testing can and should be replaced by predictive methods. It is the only way to know if models have any value.

Originality/value

This is the first time predictive methods have been used to demonstrate measure and variable importance. Hypothesis testing can never prove the goodness of models. Only predictive methods can.
