Abstract

In this chapter, the author makes the case for how disability affects a family and, therefore, that clinicians should adopt a wider lens when providing treatment to disabled clients. In the review of research findings on disability in the family, there are three parts: (a) models of disability, (b) disabled children, and (c) disabled adults. In the next section, the author presents ideas from medical family therapy (MFT) and discusses family systems models that provide a structure for thinking about a family’s response to disability in any of its members. Brief case examples throughout the chapter illustrate how families are involved in an individual member’s disability. Implications for clinicians include knowing the core tenets and common factors of family systems therapy; familiarity with disability affirmative therapy; attention to the reality of microaggressions and courtesy stigma; comfort with disability topics such as pain, fatigue, and sexuality; having an accessible practice; thinking systemically; and the ability to hold all the parts of the family and the disability in one place.

Abstract

The use of the concept of “agency,” in the sense of action that is to some extent free of “structural” constraints, has enjoyed enormous and growing popularity in the sociological literature over the past several decades. In a previous paper, we examined the range of theoretical rationales offered by sociologists for the inclusion of the notion of “agency” in sociological explanations. Having found these rationales seriously wanting, in this paper we attempt to determine empirically what role “agency” actually plays in the recent sociological literature. We examine a random sample of 147 articles in sociology journals that use the concept of “agency” with the aim of identifying the ways in which the term is used and what function the concept serves in the sociological explanations offered. We identify four principal (often overlapping) uses of “agency”: (1) purely descriptive; (2) as a synonym for “power”; (3) as a way to identify resistance to “structural” pressures; and (4) as a way to describe intelligible human actions. We find that in none of these cases the notion of “agency” adds anything of analytical or explanatory value. These different uses have one thing in common, however: they all tend to use the term “agency” in a strongly normative sense to mark the actions the authors approve of. We conclude that “agency” seems to serve the purpose of registering the authors' moral or political preferences under the guise of a seemingly analytical concept.

Abstract

This chapter discusses and evaluates Erik Olin Wright's reception of Max Weber. To this end, it presents Wright's and Weber's class theories and focuses on and counter poses their respective notions of emancipation, exploitation, inequality, and democracy. The article, furthermore, critically evaluates Wright's assessment of Weber by referring them to Weber's own texts and argues that Weber's notion of exploitation connotes the sphere of production, not that of exchange; that exploitation for Weber hinges on differences in life chances that cause obstacles in mobility between social classes; and that for Weber exploitation may be found in other modes of production in addition to capitalism. Finally, this chapter traces the differences in these authors' respective notions of exploitation to their different understanding of emancipation.

Abstract

The importance of including victims of abuse within prevention responses has recently received some attention within the sport sector. This chapter reports on a UK initiative, funded by a national sport agency, which aimed to provide a platform for individuals with a ‘lived experience’ of child abuse in a sport context to deliver awareness-raising events for stakeholders within the sport sector. Interviews were conducted with the participants to explore their experiences. This chapter reports on their primary motivations for participation, the concerns and anxieties they experienced, as well as wider issues relating to engagement with the sport sector. The discussion reflects on the challenges and potential of such activity and will be of interest to those with a personal experience of abuse, practitioners and researchers working with survivor-activists and those working in safeguarding and child/athlete welfare more broadly.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores the intersection of Management Buyouts (MBOs), Management Buy-ins (MBIs), and Open Innovation (OI). While MBOs have been associated with innovation in numerous studies, MBIs and their role in fostering OI remain underexplored, especially in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

A Bibliometric-Systematic Literature Review (B-SLR) was conducted, analyzing 89 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus and Web of Science (1989–2022). Keyword co-occurrence analysis identified thematic clusters, including governance reforms, leadership entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships, as critical enablers of OI in MBOs and MBIs.

Findings

The study highlights research directions, such as OI mechanisms, cross-industry comparisons, and performance evaluation frameworks. It underscores the differences in innovation outputs and organizational resilience between MBOs and MBIs, suggesting tailored strategies to optimize OI adoption.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to literature from Scopus and Web of Science and focuses on conceptual frameworks rather than empirical testing. Future research should explore sector-specific dynamics and long-term innovation outcomes.

Practical implications

MBO/MBI managers can leverage the insights to foster OI, address innovation barriers, and build resilient businesses by adopting strategic partnerships and effective governance structures.

Social implications

The research highlights the potential of MBOs/MBIs to drive innovation and economic growth in SMEs, particularly in industries requiring collaborative innovation strategies.

Originality/value

This study fills a significant gap by connecting MBIs to OI, offering a conceptual framework and a research agenda that align buyout strategies with sustainable innovation practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of swirling jet flow on the cooling performance of a heated rectangular prism placed within a channel. The primary aim is to explore the influence of varying aspect ratios (AR) of the prism and different fluid Reynolds numbers (Re) on the cooling efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical analysis is performed using a finite volume-based solver, which incorporates the large eddy simulations (LES) turbulence model. The setup consists of twin 45° swirling jets directed at isothermally heated bodies, with water used as the cooling medium. The rectangular prism is oriented perpendicularly to the channel flow direction, positioned one unit distance from the inlet. This study examines three distinct aspect ratios (AR = 0.5, 1 and 1.5) and a range of Reynolds numbers (6000 = Re = 20000).

Findings

The results indicate that cooling efficiency improves as the aspect ratio decreases and the Reynolds number increases. Higher Reynolds numbers enhance jet impingement and turbulent mixing, which are crucial for efficient heat transfer. Conversely, lower Reynolds numbers lead to diminished impingement and reduced cooling efficiency. Increasing the Reynolds number from 6000 to 20000 elevates the average Nusselt number by 35% (for AR = 0.5) and up to 45% (for AR = 1.5). It was observed that lower aspect ratios produce superior cooling effects due to intensified localized jet interactions.

Originality/value

This research significantly contributes to the fields of fluid dynamics and thermal engineering by elucidating the influence of swirling jet flows on the cooling of heated surfaces. The findings offer valuable insights for optimizing the design and performance of cooling systems across various industrial applications.

Abstract

This chapter delves into the biopsychosocial reasons behind offending behaviour. It provides an overview of key theories from the biological, psychological and social perspectives in psychology and criminology. The discussion includes different viewpoints on why people offend, focusing on Compassion-Focused Therapy and positive psychology. It explores how these approaches contribute to our understanding of offending behaviour.
