Abstract

Purpose

The purposes of this study are to identify the ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in metaverse retailing, and give insights to practitioners in the fashion industry who are planning to launch metaverse retailing.

Design/methodology/approach

To offer a balanced view of available evidence, this study adopted a literature review approach and attempted to collect all existing academic journal articles on the issues related to metaverse retailing and luxury fashion brands. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in electronic databases Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, Pro Quest and Science Direct from January 2023 to April 2024. Based on the results of the research in literature, real-life examples of luxury fashion brands were used to explain the ways that luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing can be put into practice.

Findings

The findings have revealed that there are many ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in the metaverse retailing. The fusion of metaverse-related technologies provides brands with a wide platform of choices that can create immersive, personalized marketing experiences for customers. Four roles of metaverse are identified: (1) enhance of immersive experience; (2) provide big data interface to smart decision-making; (3) form high-fidelity simulated space; and (4) maintenance economic system and making of identification. To further enhance the four roles of metaverse, four types of technologies and 15 components for metaverse can be adopted by luxury fashion brands.

Research limitations/implications

While this paper provides a literature review and real-life examples of luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing to explain the findings, further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of current efforts in the development of luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing through collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. Also, future studies may attempt to explore the challenges of investigating consumers in response to luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing.

Practical implications

The metaverse is turning imagination into reality through the integration of multiple technologies and is gaining momentum in tech. With technology leading the way, business leaders and brands must not only rethink retail but also bring immersive shopping experiences into the future. Metaverse has immense potential to transform the retail industry, thus the leading global and local firms must embrace innovation and new technologies, and prioritize “metaverse transformation” for their business. Based on the results of this study, some emerging practices pertaining to metaverse retailing are provided.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it would seem that this is the first work that conducts a literature review of the relevant academic journal articles addressed to the practitioners or managerial audiences in the area of luxury fashion industry who are concerned about the development of metaverse retailing. This paper identifies the ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in the metaverse retailing and gives insights to practitioners in the luxury fashion industry who are planning to launch metaverse retailing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to illustrate an emerging typology that theoretically links work values with personal values and to provide evidence of construct validity for this typology.

Design/methodology/approach

A hypothesis was developed that four types of work values – intrinsic, extrinsic, prestige and affective – underlie the relative importance that individuals place on aspects of work. Evidence of construct validity was provided using triangulation analysis. Data from three different samples in Japan were analysed with three different techniques; exploratory factor analysis (N = 229), hierarchical cluster analysis (N = 244) and smallest space analysis (N = 203).

Findings

The results demonstrate acceptable internal consistency and a coherent structure that fits the theoretical model across methods and samples. These findings lend strong support to the use of the intrinsic, extrinsic, affective and prestige typology for studying work values. This will hopefully encourage field scholars to adopt the typology in future values-based explorations in the context of work.

Originality/value

The study adds to the emergent literature in business research that stresses the importance of triangulation analysis to enhance the reliability and validity of findings. In this sense, it is an innovative paradigm of a multiple triangulation approach, which combines both data and within-method triangulation. The methods employed covered – for the first time – all commonly applied techniques for exploring the structure underlying the data and provided inductive, deductive and spatial evidence to corroborate the observed structure of work values.

Abstract

Purpose

Online games are highly popular Internet applications. Some games enable players to save game progress and accumulate experiences or changes to avatars during gameplay, whereas some other games do not, requiring players to restart from the beginning each time. That is, games differ in avatar accumulability. However, we do not know whether games should be designed to permit avatar accumulability or not and how it affects players’ gameplay experience and therefore game outcomes, indicating gaps. Research addressing these gaps can inform game makers in designing games that effectively strengthen their players’ game loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

We used social identity theory (SIT) to construct a theoretical model. To test this model, three waves of survey data were gathered from the same 778 participants.

Findings

These findings uniquely indicate that avatar accumulability fosters avatar identification and increases players’ focused immersion, thus increasing players’ loyalty.

Practical implications

Game providers could include game features that enable players to accumulate their avatars’ in-game skins, levels, items (weapons and equipment) and experience points. This accumulability can help strengthen players’ game loyalty.

Originality/value

Overall, our study extends SIT by adding a new trigger (avatar accumulability) and two novel consequences of avatar identification (image protection and focused immersion) in avatar-related systems (games or gamified systems). The new trigger offers an actionable means to apply SIT, while the novel consequences verify the value of applying SIT to study online games.

Abstract

Purpose

The unitized curtain wall system (UCWS), a symbol of modern architecture, is gaining popularity among prefabricated components. Previous studies have focused on both construction technology advances and material selection strategies to facilitate the UCWS. However, the topic of client satisfaction, which drives industry development by targeting clients' demands, has gone unnoticed. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate client satisfaction with UCWS products in Hong Kong by finding its influential factors.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review was employed to first identify the influential factors. A semi-structured interview was employed to validate the reliability of the extracted factors. The machine learning algorithm Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and the Pearson correlation were then employed to rank the importance and correlation of factors based on the 1–5 Likert scale scores obtained through a questionnaire survey.

Findings

The findings revealed that “reduction in construction time” and “reduction in construction waste” are the most important factors and have a strong positive influence on client satisfaction.

Originality/value

Unlike previous studies, the present study focused on a novel research topic and introduces an objective analysis process using machine learning algorithms. The findings contribute to narrowing the knowledge gap regarding client preference for UCWS products from both individual and collaborative perspectives, providing decision-makers with an objective, quantitative and thorough reference before making investments in the curtain wall management development.

Abstract

Purpose

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) has provided new opportunities and challenges in using educational environments for students’ interaction and knowledge acquisition. Based on the expectation–confirmation theory, this paper aims to investigate the effect of different constructs associated with Gen-AI on engagement, satisfaction and word-of-mouth.

Design/methodology/approach

We collected data from 508 students in the UK using Qualtrics, a prominent online data collection platform. The conceptual framework was analysed through structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings show that Gen-AI expectation formation and Gen-AI quality help to boost Gen-AI engagement. Further, we found that active engagement positively affects Gen-AI satisfaction and positive word of mouth. The mediating role of Gen-AI expectation confirmation between engagement and the two outcomes, satisfaction and positive word of mouth, was also confirmed. The moderating role of cognitive processing in the relationship between Gen-AI quality and engagement was found.

Originality/value

This paper extends the Expectation-Confirmation Theory on how Gen-AI can enhance students’ engagement and satisfaction. Suggestions for future research are derived to advance beyond the confines of the current study and to capture the development in the use of AI in education.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the factors and strategies that motivate Thai construction professionals to adopt Blockchain Technology (BT). Previous research highlights BT’s characteristics but lacks focus on the features most persuasive for Thai construction professionals.

Design/methodology/approach

Using Q methodology with 28 participants from the academic, construction and advanced technology sectors, this study explores their perceptions on BT adoption and addresses the gap in identifying persuasive features for Thai construction professionals.

Findings

The analysis identified eight distinct professional groups, each with unique perceptions of BT’s motivating factors. Based on these insights, seven strategies were proposed to promote BT adoption. A key finding is that BT adoption is influenced not only by professionals’ roles, positions and accountability but also by their existing technological competencies.

Research limitations/implications

The use of Q methodology, while insightful, may not capture the full complexity of attitudes toward BT adoption. Additionally, the focus on the Thai construction industry and the small sample size may limit its generalizability to other cultural and economic contexts.

Practical implications

Identifying professional categories based on BT preferences and implementing strategies – such as automated systems, smart contracts, education centers and pilot projects – can enhance productivity in the Thai construction industry, drawing on global practices to address local challenges.

Originality/value

– With Thailand’s extensive infrastructure projects supporting ASEAN’s transportation hub vision, integrating blockchain is expected to enhance productivity and project outcomes, contributing to Thailand’s national infrastructure development goals.
