Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a full introduction, new classification, comparison and investigation of the challenges as well as applications of layerless 3D printing, which is one of the industry 4.0 pioneers.

Design/methodology/approach

Given the significance and novelty of uniform 3D printing, more than 250 publications were collected and reviewed in an unbiased and clear manner.

Findings

As a result, the majority of uniform parts printed in polymer form are known up to this point. In a novel division for better researchers’ comprehension, uniform printing systems were classified into three categories: oxygen inhibition (OI), liquid lubrication (LL) and photon penetration (PP), and each was thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, these three approaches were evaluated in terms of printing speed, precision and accuracy, manufacturing scale and cost.

Originality/value

The parameters of each approach were compared independently, and then a practical comparison was conducted among these three approaches. Finally, a variety of technologies, opportunities, challenges and advantages of each significant method, as well as a future outlook for layerless rapid prototyping, are presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the performance requirements for the all-electric high lift motors and the inductance calculation process for the fractional slot concentrated winding.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents the research work related to all-electric aircraft high lift motors and the inductance calculation process of fractional slot concentrated winding. Firstly, this paper introduces the performance requirements for the high lift motor and summarizes the general process for calculating the inductance in fractional slot motors. Secondly, the analytical model of winding armature total inductance is obtained by the winding function method. Thirdly, a straightforward calculation method is employed for determining the total slot leakage inductance. Finally, the accuracy of the inductance calculation and controllability of the motor are confirmed through finite element model and motor control strategies.

Findings

In the fractional slot concentrated winding, the armature total inductance is equal to the armature self-inductance plus the armature mutual inductance. The slot leakage inductance is divided into the slot leakage self-inductance and the slot leakage mutual inductance. This allows inductance to be obtained quickly without finite element model.

Originality/value

This paper provides the inductance results of analytical and finite element simulation; the control strategy is employed to verify the conformity of the design requirements and control performance under the rated conditions. The implementation of double verification assures the practicality and effectiveness of the high lift motor.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the factors influencing the evolution of emerging technology innovation network (ETIN) in combination with the key attributes and life cycle of emerging technologies, particularly the impact of multiple knowledge attributes and technology life cycle on the ETIN evolution.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collects 5G patent data and their citation information from the Derwent Innovations Index to construct a 5G technology innovation network (5GIN) as a sample network and conducts an empirical analysis of the 5GIN using the temporal exponential random graph model (TERGM).

Findings

The results indicate that during the 5GIN evolution, the network scale continues to expand and exhibits increasingly significant core-periphery structure, scale-free characteristic, small-world characteristic and community structure. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the multiple knowledge attributes based on the key attributes of emerging technologies, including knowledge novelty, coherence, growth and impact, have a significant positive influence on the ETIN evolution. Meanwhile, the temporal evolution of ETIN is also found to be correlated with the life cycle of emerging technologies.

Originality/value

This study extends the exploration of emerging technology research from a complex network perspective, providing a more realistic explanatory framework for the factors influencing ETIN evolution. It further highlights the important role that multiple knowledge attributes and the technology life cycle play within this framework.

Abstract

Purpose

The delivery service business model is the final link in logistics for both online-and-offline (O2O) businesses. O2O business models combine e-commerce and physical commerce, using online marketing techniques to drive consumption in physical channels. Regarding collaborative recommendation, a recommendation mechanism involves two or more parties, such as logistics, retail firms and e-commerce operators, working together to obtain necessary consumer information and knowledge, such as profiles and preferences, as the basis for personalized product recommendations. Thus, delivery service and O2O purchasing integration for retail collaborative recommendations development are valuable research issues on retail and distribution management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study implements two-stage data mining analytics for clustering and association rules analysis, to investigate Taiwan consumers' (n = 2,169) preferences for delivery service. This process clarifies delivery service and O2O purchasing behaviours and preferences to find knowledge profiles/patterns/rules for retail collaborative recommendations.

Findings

This study first found several knowledge profiles/patterns/rules on our subjects. Discussion and implications for Taiwan retail and delivery service operators are also presented. The research findings show that delivery service is a valuable resource for O2O business models for retail collaborative recommendations.

Originality/value

Regarding originality and value, collaborative recommendation is a mechanism that seeks to understand consumers' lives and context. From the retail perspective, delivery and retail operators can join to discover valuable data on the platform through interactive data on consumer preferences for delivery service and O2O purchasing. These operators can then summarize the information to make collaborative recommendations more accurately, thus increasing O2O purchasing.

Abstract

Purpose

In today’s knowledge societies, scientific research is tasked to contribute to solving crucial problems, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Epistemic inequality, both in terms of who is able to contribute, and whose voices are being heard, could hamper our ability to develop solutions that meet the needs of all.

Design/methodology/approach

We assembled a set of publications published from 2006 to 2019 related to three SDGs (Health/Well-Being, Climate Action, Zero Hunger) by mapping Fields of Study from Microsoft Academic Graph to SDGs. Across this set, we investigate patterns of knowledge production, investigating gender, levels of institutional resourcing and contributions by world region, as well as Open Access availability of research.

Findings

Research related to the three SDGs is primarily published by researchers from institutions situated in the global North. Well-resourced institutions contribute disproportionately to the study of the three SDGs. The share of authorships by women is rising, but still far away from equity. We find higher ranked institutions to produce more OA articles, with a declining relationship between institutional ranking and the share of OA. Finally, we find overall higher shares of OA publishing across low- and high-income countries, compared to lower and upper medium income countries.

Originality/value

Mapping research contributions to SDGs by leveraging the comprehensive data available from Microsoft Academic Graph adds an important perspective to the study of SDG-related research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the historical trends and status of the national development of artificial intelligence (AI) from a nationwide perspective and to enable governments at different administrative levels to promote AI development through policymaking.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyzed 248 Chinese AI policies (36 issued by the state agencies and 212 by the regional agencies). Policy bibliometrics, policy instruments and network analysis were used to reveal the AI policy patterns. Three aspects were analyzed: the spatiotemporal distribution of issued policies, the policy foci and instruments of policy contents and the cooperation and citation among policy-issuing agencies.

Findings

Results indicate that Chinese AI development is still in the initial phase. During the policymaking processes, the state and regional policy foci have strong consistency; however, the coordination among state and regional agencies is supposed to be strengthened. According to the issuing time of AI policies, Chinese AI development is in accordance with the global situation and has witnessed unprecedented growth in the last five years. And the coastal provinces have issued more targeted policies than the middle and western provinces. Governments at the state and regional levels have emphasized familiar policy foci and played the role of policymakers, along with regional governments that also functioned as policy executors as well. According to the three-dimension instruments coding, the authors found an uneven structure of policy instruments at both levels. Furthermore, weak cooperation appears at the state level, while little cooperation is found among regional agencies. Regional governments cite state policies, thus leading to the formation of top-down diffusion, lacking bottom-up diffusion.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the literature by characterizing policy patterns from both external attributes and semantic contents, thus revealing features of policy distribution, contents and agencies. What is more, this research analyzes Chinese AI policies from a nationwide perspective, which contributes to clarifying the overall status and multi-level relationships of policies. The findings also benefit the coordinated development of governments during further policymaking processes.

Abstract

Purpose

Workplace bullying is a serious problem among nurses, which results in negative workplace behavior. Therefore, this study aims to understand how workplace bullying affects employees’ knowledge hiding behavior. Specifically, this study explored psychological contract breach as an underlying mechanism between workplace bullying and knowledge hiding; and learning goal orientation as a boundary condition between psychological contract breach and knowledge hiding.

Design/methodology/approach

The study collected data from 343 nurses working in the health-care sector of Pakistan on convenience basis using a questionnaire-based survey between December 2021 to March 2022. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results revealed the adverse effect of workplace bullying on knowledge hiding behaviors among nurses, and psychological contract breach was noted to mediate this association. Further, learning goal orientation was noted to buffer the relationship between psychological contract breach and knowledge hiding.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-section design may restrict causality; however, the findings suggest health-care administration take appropriate measures to reduce the adverse effects of workplace bullying. In addition, the administration is suggested to implement training programs to make nurses capable of dealing with workplace stressors (bullying and psychological contract breach).

Originality/value

This research provides a novel perspective to consider psychological contract breach as a mechanism between workplace bullying and knowledge hiding in the health-care sector from the conservation of resources perspective. It further explored learning goal orientation as a buffer to mitigate the effect of psychological contract breach on knowledge hiding.

Abstract

Purpose

Responding to the lack of research on work engagement and burnout of professionals in the communication industries, this work’s main objective is to evaluate the effect of psychosocial working conditions (meaningful work, trust and recognition) on work engagement and burnout. Additionally, the mediating role of employee voice is tested.

Design/methodology/approach

The study takes a quantitative approach. A sample of 3,386 European workers in the communication industries was taken from the 2021 European Working Conditions Survey. The measurement of the main concepts is based on the variables available in the database above. The hypotheses were tested using the partial least squares method.

Findings

The results reveal that all psychosocial working conditions (meaningful work, trust and recognition) contribute to promoting work engagement and reducing burnout. Furthermore, employee voice is a mediator of the relationship between psychosocial working conditions, work engagement and burnout, although the presence of employee voice reduces the robustness of those relationships.

Practical implications

These results present relevant practical implications for managing workers in the communication industries, namely some clues to promote positive employee outcomes through the management of psychosocial working conditions.

Originality/value

This study examines the underexplored topic of work engagement and burnout in professionals in the communication industries as well as the relevance of psychological working conditions and employee voice to those outcomes. Furthermore, this study provides insightful information that is particularly useful to the European setting, where cultural aspects and working conditions may vary greatly from those in other parts of the world.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the corrosion resistance and electrochemical dissolution behavior of superalloys treated by different oxidation treatments.

Design/methodology/approach

Ni-based superalloys were subjected to oxidation treatment at 1000 °C for 10 h, 1150 °C for 10 h and 1200 °C for 20 h. The microstructure, electrochemical dissolution behavior, elemental distribution, as well as compactness and composition of the oxide layer, were studied.

Findings

The results show that both the thickness and the granular oxide size of the oxide layer on Ni-based superalloys increase with longer oxidation times and higher temperatures. The electrochemical dissolution efficiency of Ni-based superalloys decreases with increasing oxidation time and temperature. The reduced electrochemical dissolution efficiency observed in Ni-based superalloys oxidation-treated at 1200 °C for 20 h is primarily attributed to the thicker oxide layer, which contains the highest Cr oxide content.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the advancement of recycling and utilization of Ni-based superalloy scrap.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to enhance our understanding of how organizational dehumanization affects employees’ creative performance. We propose the self-esteem threat as a mediator in the relationship between organizational dehumanization and employees’ creative performance. We also examine how work locus of control moderates the relationship between organizational dehumanization and creative performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Through convenience sampling, online and face-to-face surveys, multisource time-lagged data (N = 257) were collected from full-time employees and their supervisors in Pakistani organizations in the information technology, media industry and oil and gas sectors.

Findings

Organizational dehumanization negatively affects employees’ creative performance, and threats to self-esteem mediate this relationship. Work locus of control moderates the effect of organizational dehumanization on creative performance, and this negative relationship is attenuated when individuals have an external work locus of control.

Originality/value

This study provides novel insights into the process underlying the relationship between organizational dehumanization and creative performance by revealing the mediating role of threat to self-esteem and the buffering role of work locus of control.
