Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to analysis of the effects of green innovation ecosystem coopetition (cooperation and competition), environmental management practices (EMPs) and digital innovation (DI) on carbon footprint reduction.
Design/methodology/approach
To conduct the study, a questionnaire was administered to hotel managers from different regions of Brazil. Data were collected from 197 hotels and analyzed via partial least squares structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results show that green innovation ecosystem cooperation positively and significantly affects EMPs and DI. Green innovation ecosystem competition interactions also benefit the adoption of EMPs. However, they do not significantly influence the use of DI. The results indicate that hotels that are in a scenario of simultaneous competition and collaboration (coopetition) within the green innovation ecosystem can reduce carbon emissions when EMPs and DI are used.
Research limitations/implications
The authors contribute to the literature by showing different pathways for reducing the carbon footprint of hotels. The results expand the authors’ knowledge by showing evidence that cooperation and competition interactions can produce distinct effects, especially on DI. Thus, this study has important practical implications for hotel managers seeking to improve their environmental practices and DI with the help of external multiagent resources and knowledge.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the literature by examining how cooperation and competition interactions in the green innovation ecosystem help in the adoption of environmental management and DI practices.

Abstract
Purpose
The brake pipe system was an essential braking component of the railway freight trains, but the existing E-type sealing rings had problems such as insufficient low-temperature resistance, poor heat stability and short service life. To address these issues, low-phenyl silicone rubber was prepared and tested, and the finite element analysis and experimental studies on the sealing performance of its sealing rings were carried out.
Design/methodology/approach
The low-temperature resistance and thermal stability of the prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber were studied using low-temperature tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic thermomechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The sealing performance of the low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring was studied by using finite element analysis software abaqus and experiments.
Findings
The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring possessed excellent low-temperature resistance and thermal stability. According to the finite element analysis results, the finish of the flange sealing surface and groove outer edge should be ensured, and extrusion damage should be avoided. The sealing rings were more susceptible to damage in high compression ratio and/or low-temperature environments. When the sealing effect was ensured, a small compression ratio should be selected, and rubbers with hardness and elasticity less affected by temperature should be selected. The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring had zero leakage at both room temperature (RT) and −50 °C.
Originality/value
The innovation of this study is that it provides valuable data and experience for the future development of the sealing rings used in the brake pipe flange joints of the railway freight cars in China.

Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the attitude synchronization issue of multi-spacecraft formation flying systems under the limited communication resources.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors propose a distributed learning Chebyshev neural network controller (LCNNC) combining a dynamic event-triggered (DET) mechanism and a learning CNN model to achieve accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.
Findings
The proposed method can significantly reduce the internal communication frequency and improve the attitude synchronization accuracy.
Practical implications
This method requires the low communication resources, has a high control accuracy and is thus suitable for engineering applications.
Originality/value
A novel DET mechanism-based LCNNC is proposed to achieve the accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to determine whether knowledge creation processes (KCPs) – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration affect digital innovation (DI), including information technology (IT)-enabled capabilities (ITECs) as a mediator and absorptive capacity (AC) as a moderator.
Design/methodology/approach
With a survey data set of 390 employees from Pakistani software small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the current study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using Smart Partial Least Squares to estimate the structural relationships in the conceptual model.
Findings
The results confirm that KCPs – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration positively enhance software SME's DI; ITECs play a partial mediating role in the linkage between KCPs and DI; AC positively moderates the relationship between knowledge integration and ITECs, and ITECs and DI, while AC doesn’t moderate the relationship between knowledge exchange and ITECs. The AC positively moderates the mediating role of ITECs amongst KCPs (knowledge exchange and knowledge integration) and DI, respectively.
Originality/value
This research uniquely integrates the knowledge-based view and dynamic capability theory to present a comprehensive framework that explains the interdependencies between knowledge process, ITECs and AC in driving DI. This approach advances the understanding of how software SMEs can strengthen internal knowledge and IT resources to achieve superior innovation outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore whether organization modularity affects the operation performance of manufacturing firms through the mediator of digital embeddedness and the moderator of organization compatibility.
Design/methodology/approach
Hierarchical regression, mediation effect test macro and bootstrap were conducted to empirically analyze two waves of longitudinal survey data from 284 Chinese manufacturing firms.
Findings
Digital embeddedness (digital technology, digital infrastructure and digital culture) mediates the relationship between organization modularity and operation performance. In addition, organization compatibility positively moderates the relationship between the three types of digital embeddedness and operation performance. Under a high organization compatibility degree, digital embeddedness has a positive impact on operational performance, but under a low organization compatibility degree, its impact is negative.
Practical implications
Organizational modularity is an important measure for manufacturers to gain competitive advantages, especially in the industrial transformation driven by the digital economy. Manufacturers need to realize modularity immediately and consider the compatibility of digitalization so that they can embed digital technology more flexibly and adaptively and gain operational advantages.
Originality/value
This study is very relevant for industrial manufacturers, as they urgently need to know how to gain competitive advantages through organizational change in digital transformation. This study provides many reliable theoretical guidelines. Specifically, this study tells manufacturers how to better realize digital embedding and performance through modularity and how to improve the compatibility between digitalization and organization.

Purpose
The purpose of this article is to investigate factors related to the time students spent on remote activities during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. Specifically, it analyzes whether the school’s relationship with the family and the guardians’ support are associated with longer study times for children and youth.
Design/methodology/approach
This was performed using an ordered logit model on data from two waves of the survey Remote Education in the Perspective of Students and Their Families (PENP) with a nationally and regionally representative sample of Brazilian public school students.
Findings
Results show the importance of contact between the school and the family and, to a greater extent, the direct support of parents or guardians. The odds of learners spending more hours studying increase 36% when schools provide guidance for parents and guardians; in turn, when they provide support for students during activities, these odds increase 144%.
Originality/value
Moreover, students spend more time doing school activities in the later years of elementary school, high school and when they attend a state school.

Abstract
Purpose
Open innovation enables firms to incorporate external expertise and resources into their innovations. However, it is far from easy to obtain sufficient support from external contributors due to potential concerns about the risks of opportunism and appropriation. This paper aims to investigate whether firms’ engagement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributes to their open innovation, considering the contingency factors of technological capability, environmental dynamism and state ownership based on capability and motivation perspectives.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a sample of Chinese listed firms covering the period from 2009 to 2018, instrumental variable and propensity score matching approaches were used to address the endogenous problems.
Findings
This paper obtains empirical results showing that firms engaged in higher levels of CSR produce more joint outputs (co-owned patents) and that this effect is strengthened by technological capability and environmental dynamism. Among state-owned enterprises, CSR engagement is less impactful with regard to open innovation. It is further shown that open innovation is a primary channel through which CSR engagement enhances innovative efficiency.
Originality/value
This study enriches the knowledge of the antecedents of open innovation and contributes to the debate regarding the relationship between CSR and innovation by establishing a relationship between CSR and open innovation, whereas most prior studies focus on how the input and output of innovation are affected by CSR initiatives.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to address the issue of perfunctory sharing that arises in knowledge governance due to a lack of willingness to share knowledge between individuals within the same organization. This knowledge-sharing process does not occur simultaneously for both parties but follows a sequential progression. Additionally, this governance model fully considers the willingness of both parties to share and effectively addresses the two knowledge characteristics that influence their willingness to do so.
Design/methodology/approach
This study follows inductive logic and primarily adopts an interpretive case study approach to conduct a longitudinal exploratory case study. An incubator enterprise with active knowledge-sharing activities and significant knowledge governance effects is selected as the research subject. The governance system is explained through the lens of prospect theory at the mechanism level.
Findings
In the study of the knowledge-sharing process, the authors observed a new challenge: perfunctory behavior, whereby individuals engage in knowledge-sharing activities that lack substantial effects as a way to avoid genuine sharing. From this, a new knowledge-sharing model was extracted, the cold start and hot feedback model, which follows a sequential (rather than simultaneous) progression. Using the deterministic effect of prospect theory and the principle of reference dependence, the governance mechanism of corporate knowledge sharing was analyzed from the perspective of knowledge-sharing willingness.
Research limitations/implications
Based on prospect theory, this study primarily explains how the governance mechanism influences the willingness to share knowledge from the perspective of four principles. In the future, threat rigidity theory and commitment escalation theory can be combined to further analyze the willingness to share knowledge from the perspectives of pressure and cost. Empirical research methods can also be used to test and enrich the research results of this paper.
Originality/value
After considering the willingness to share knowledge, a new knowledge-sharing model and corresponding knowledge-sharing governance model are proposed, and prospect theory is extended to the knowledge-based theory research field.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the relationships between environmental, social, and governance (ESG) controversies and insolvency risk in the insurance sector. Drawing from legitimacy and stakeholder theories, the authors explore the impact of ESG controversies on insurers’ insolvency risk and the moderating effect of ESG practices on this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
This study utilises a dataset comprising 120 stock insurance firms spanning from 2011 to 2022. The authors employed system-GMM estimations to control for potential endogeneity and conducted several robustness checks.
Findings
ESG controversy positively influences insurers’ insolvency risk, with ESG practices mitigating these positive effects. The Governance (G) component of ESG practices plays a key role in counteracting the effects of ESG controversies on insurance companies’ insolvency risk.
Originality/value
This is the first study to investigate the direct relationship between ESG controversies and insolvency risk in the insurance industry. It underscores the critical influence of stakeholders’ perceptions of the company’s legitimacy, which is determined by the number of ESG controversies undertaken by the insurer company, on its insolvency risk. Additionally, by examining the three components of ESG practices individually, the authors offer insights into how managers can gain a competitive edge, particularly by utilising governance practices as safeguards against the adverse effects of ESG controversies on their financial risk.

Abstract
Purpose
By extending corporate social responsibility research to a megaproject context, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of megaproject external social responsibility (SR) on community acceptance through the mediating role of public trust.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing from legitimacy theory as well as corporate social responsibility literature, this study developed hypotheses linking the constructs of SR, (public) trust and community acceptance of a megaproject. Thereby, a household survey questionnaire was administered to collect data from randomly selected 328 households in the local community who reside near the construction site of a mega hydropower project in Ethiopia. Guided by structural equation modelling, Smart Partial Least Squares4 (SmartPLS4) was utilized to analyze the data.
Findings
The empirical findings show that community-targeted SR has a significant positive effect on community acceptance of a megaproject, whereas the direct effect of natural environment-targeted SR on community acceptance was found to be non-significant. More importantly, the study reveals that trust in the contractor of the megaproject mediates the relationships between a megaproject SR (fully in the case of the natural environment and partially for community-targeted responsibility) and community acceptance.
Originality/value
The present study contributes to legitimacy theory by illustrating the consequences of megaproject external SR in terms of trust and community acceptance, an issue which has not received adequate attention in the project management literature.
