Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the process of scaling second-hand fashion and how different strategic paths develop over time. This is theoretically grounded in two distinct scaling logics synthesised from the literature: a process that includes strategies for organisational growth (breadth-scaling) and a process that influences change in formal and informal institutions (depth-scaling).
Design/methodology/approach
The paper presents a process-based study based on the growth of a second-hand fashion retail organisation over 20 years. Qualitative materials such as interviews, observations and documents were collected and analysed.
Findings
The findings illustrate how a circular business model (CBM) can make use of a mix of strategies aiming for both organisational growth and impacting practices and habits within the fashion industry. Strategies building on breadth-scaling logic are found to be a prerequisite for engaging with depth-scaling strategies since they contribute to necessary resources and confidence, while depth-scaling secures future scaling opportunities by changing the conditions for scale.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the relatively scant literature on the process of scaling CBMs by exploring how different strategic paths unfold over time. The process-based approach, in combination with the two scaling logics, gives new insights into how CBMs go from niche to mainstream and thus influence the transition to a circular economy (CE).

Abstract
Purpose
In laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing, spatter particles are ejected from the melt pool and can be detrimental to material performance and powder recycling. Quantifying spatter generation with respect to processing conditions is a step toward mitigating spatter and better understanding the phenomenon. This paper reveals process insights of spatter phenomena by automatically annotating spatter particles in high-speed video observations using machine learning.
Design/methodology/approach
A high-speed camera was used to observe the L-PBF process while varying laser power, laser scan speed and scan strategy on a constant geometry on an EOSM290 using Ti-6Al-4V powder. Two separate convolutional neural networks were trained to segment and track spatter particles in captured high-speed videos for spatter characterization.
Findings
Spatter generation and ejection angle significantly differ between keyhole and conduction mode melting. High laser powers lead to large ejections at the beginning of scan lines. Slow and fast build rates produce more spatter than moderate build rates at constant energy density. Scan strategies with more scan vectors lead to more spatter. The presence of powder significantly increases the amount of spatter generated during the process.
Originality/value
With the ability to automatically annotate a large volume of high-speed video data sets with high accuracy, an experimental design of observed parameter changes reveals quantitively stark changes in spatter morphology that can aid process development to mitigate spatter occurrence and impacts on material performance.

Abstract
Purpose
Citizen engagement plays a crucial role in transitioning to sustainable service ecosystems. While customer engagement has been extensively studied in service research, citizen engagement has received significantly less attention. By synthesizing customer and citizen engagement literatures, this study develops an integrated framework to conceptually clarify the dual role of customer-citizen engagement for sustainability.
Design/methodology/approach
This study builds on a systematic literature review of customer engagement literature in service research and citizen engagement literature. Following a theory synthesis approach, we qualitatively analyzed 126 articles to develop an integrated conceptual framework of customer-citizen engagement for sustainability through a process of abductive reasoning.
Findings
The analysis showed that customer engagement and citizen engagement literatures have developed mostly separately but provide complementary views. While the customer engagement literature has traditionally focused on business-related facets, such as engagement with brands, the citizen perspective broadens the engagement scope to other citizens, communities and society in general. The integrated framework highlights the interplay between citizen and customer roles and the impact of their relationships with multiple objects on sustainability.
Originality/value
This integrated framework contributes to advancing our understanding of customer-citizen engagement, broadening the scope of subject-object engagement by examining the interplay between these roles in how they engage for sustainability and moving beyond the traditional dyadic perspective to a multi-level perspective of service ecosystems. This framework also enables the development of a set of research directions to advance the understanding of engagement in sustainable service ecosystems.
