Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide the integrated model with artificial intelligence (AI) awareness for the betterment of the higher education system in crisis i.e. fear of contagious viruses (different kinds of flu, monkeypox, chickenpox, COVID-19, etc.) corollaries in developing nations where the quality of education depends on teachers’ commitment, stress and the turnover intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This empirical investigation employs a self-administered survey distributed among the faculty members within higher education institutions (HEIs) of the Punjab province and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Islamabad, Pakistan. The final sample of 622 faculty members was collected through convenience sampling, and structural equation modeling was performed with SmartPLS to assess the proposed model.

Findings

The study reveals that remote work significantly enhances organizational commitment while concurrently lowering the turnover intention. Conversely, perceived work stress negatively impacts organizational commitment but positively influences turnover intention. Organizational commitment partially mediates between perceived work stress and turnover intention but exhibited no mediation between remote work and turnover intention. Notably, fear of contagious viruses and AI awareness positively moderate and amplify both the perceived work stress with turnover intention and remote working with organizational commitment, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The current study extends the AI-mediated social exchange theory (MET) by observing faculty members of HEIs in the context of remote working, perceived work stress, commitment, turnover intention, fear of contagious viruses and AI awareness. Moreover, the successful application of AI-MET extended the researcher’s understanding of quality education in crisis.

Practical implications

The study offers several contributions including applications of technical skills with AI awareness among faculty members to provide quality education for society’s welfare. Moreover, HEIs should arrange training programs for performance enhancement.

Originality/value

This research provided a quality-based model for HEIs for developing nations to deal with forthcoming calamities of contagious viruses and deliver quality education through remote working during lockdown. Nowadays, off-campus education during calamity situations has been an alternative to on-campus education. Therefore, HEIs must introduce AI awareness to increase the dedication of faculty members toward society’s welfare with the utilization of full effort.

Abstract

Purpose

In the construction industry (CI), inaccurate loose material measurements pose waste and economic challenges, accounting for approximately one-third of project cost overruns, representing 60% of the overall construction costs. Current practices for measuring loose construction materials are riddled with errors, direct adjustments and missing real-time oversight, resulting in waste, inefficiencies and cost escalations. This study aims to address this issue by automating the weighing mechanism of loose materials while regularly monitoring them during transportation from the source.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an innovative Internet of Things (IoT) solution: a smart vehicle-mounted weighing (VMW) system was developed using the smart sensors, Arduino while using C++ language. Initially, a prototype was developed and tested/ refined while experimenting on a Tractor trolley loaded with loose construction materials. Statistical methods were employed to test the validity of the developed system against traditional methods of weighing. Finally, the system was tested and optimized in a real project through a case study.

Findings

The empirical findings reveal that the IoT-enabled smart weighing system achieved an accuracy exceeding 95% during rigorous field assessments. A comprehensive case study highlighted significant cost savings, with 2.7% for subbase materials and 5.94% for aggregate base materials. These results validate the successful development of the prototype, demonstrating its potential to improve material management, minimize waste, and enhance operational efficiency in construction projects while promoting sustainable practices.

Originality/value

Few studies have addressed fully automated measurement of loose materials during transport to construction sites. This study introduces a novel IoT-enabled smart VMW system for real-time material monitoring and automated quantity takeoffs (QTOs). The system offers CI a reliable, transparent, and error-free material management tool, advancing current practices in material quantification thereby leading the CI toward sustainability using the latest technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to characterize the behavior of blended concrete, including metakaolin (MK) and quarry dust (QD), as supplementary cementing materials. The study focuses on evaluating the effects of these materials on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.

Design/methodology/approach

MK, a pozzolanic material, and QD, a fine aggregate by-product, are potentially sustainable alternatives for enhancing concrete performance and reducing environmental impact. The addition of different percentages of MK enhances the pozzolanic reaction, resulting in improved strength development. Furthermore, the optimum dosage of MK, mixed with QD, and mechanical properties like compressive, flexural and split tensile strength of concrete were evaluated to investigate the synergetic effect of MK and quarry dust for M20-grade concrete.

Findings

The results reveal the influence of metakaolin and QD on the overall performance of blended concrete. Cost analysis showed that the optimum mix can reduce the 7%–8% overall cost of the materials for M20-grade concrete. Energy analysis showed that the optimum mix can reduce 7%–8% energy consumption.

Originality/value

The effective utilization is determined with the help of the analytical hierarchy process method to find an optimal solution among the selected criteria. According to the AHP analysis, the optimum content of MK and quarry dust is 12% and 16%, respectively, performing best among all other trial mixes.

Case overview/synopsis

The case study centered on the Sukkur IBA University in Pakistan, highlighting the challenges faced by its student-managed fund (SMF). From November 2015 to January 2023, the case study offers a comprehensive examination of the fund’s activities in the financial services and higher education domains. Mr Shankar Talreja, the fund manager, contemplating with significant investment losses because of macroeconomic fluctuations, specifically the rising policy rates by the State Bank of Pakistan. These losses challenge the sustainability of the SMF, which serves as a practical learning platform for students. The primary dilemma revolves around whether to continue operating the fund amid consistent losses or to dissolve it, redirecting resources to other educational programs. This case focuses on financial decision-making, risk management and investment strategies, tailored for academic settings.

Complexity academic level

This case study is intended for use in graduate- and undergraduate-level courses on corporate strategy, investment management and finance. It is appropriate for graduate students who are looking to apply these concepts more deeply as well as undergraduate students who have a strong foundation in finance due to the complexity of the financial concepts involved, such as risk management, portfolio strategy and macroeconomic impacts.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of uncertainty on the smaller banking industry by analyzing the stability of both Islamic and conventional rural banks (CRBs) in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a dynamic linear analysis through the autoregressive distributed lag framework. Rural bank stability is assessed using the Z-score, whereas economic uncertainty is measured by weighting macroeconomic indicators based on their volatility and conditional variance equation.

Findings

Economic uncertainty affects the stability of both Islamic and CRBs in Indonesia, with CRBs being more negatively impacted than Islamic rural banks.

Research limitations/implications

The findings suggest that economic uncertainty significantly influences the performance of smaller banks, underscoring the importance of maintaining a balanced financial system, especially community-based financial institutions, such as rural banks.

Practical implications

Policymakers should establish frameworks to ensure the sustainability of rural banks, enabling them to continue serving underserved communities during economic disruptions. These measures could involve granting access to government-backed liquidity facilities and incorporating rural banks into comprehensive financial safety nets.

Originality/value

This study underscores the importance of maintaining a balanced financial system by ensuring the smaller banking industry’s stability. It highlights a framework model for examining the resilience of rural banks amid economic uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the mediating role of employees’ intrinsic motivation in the relationship between perceived ambidextrous organizational culture and innovative behaviour among information technology (IT) sector employees.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative research methodology, using a questionnaire to gather data from a sample of 510 employees across a range of IT organizations and various roles in the Indian IT sector. Smart partial least squares structural equation modeling Version 3 was used for the analysis and interpretation of the study.

Findings

The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between perceived ambidextrous organizational culture and employees’ innovative behaviour in the Indian IT sector. Moreover, the study established that employees’ intrinsic motivation played a significant mediating role in this relationship.

Originality/value

This study stands out for its exploration into how employees’ intrinsic motivation mediates the relationship between ambidextrous organizational culture and innovative behaviour. It offers valuable insights for enhancing organizational creativity by understanding the critical role of intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine socio-economic, religious and institutional factors influencing zakat payment intentions among Ethiopian Muslims. The findings highlight the critical role of zakat institutions, literacy and religiosity, contributing to the broader discourse on Islamic finance and its potential as a tool for poverty alleviation in under-researched contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a quantitative approach and utilised a partial least squares-structural equation modelling technique for data analysis. The research investigated Muzakki’s intention to pay zakat, focusing on the main variables of the theory of reasoned action (TRA), namely, attitude and subjective norm, while also incorporating zakat literacy, zakat institutions (Amil) and religiosity. A total of 394 structured questionnaires were distributed with a five-point Likert scale to capture respondents’ views and experiences regarding zakat payment, using both convenience and snowball non-probability sampling methods to select participants.

Findings

The findings indicate that zakat literacy, positive attitudes towards zakat, institutional support through well-established zakat institutions and high levels of religiosity significantly influence the intention of Ethiopian Muslims to fulfil their zakat obligations. These findings underscore the need for robust, centralised zakat institutions that prioritise transparent administration and effective collection mechanisms. Lessons from successful zakat models in other countries could inspire the development of similar systems tailored to Ethiopia’s sociocultural dynamics, directly supporting poverty alleviation and socio-economic development.

Research limitations/implications

This study opens up several avenues for future research. Comparative studies could examine how successful zakat systems in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia have achieved their goals and identify lessons applicable to Ethiopia. In addition, longitudinal studies can track the long-term effects of enhanced zakat compliance on poverty alleviation and social welfare in Ethiopia. Exploring the integration of financial technologies such as blockchain into zakat administration represents another valuable research direction.

Practical implications

These findings underscore the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (MEJLIS) need to establish robust, centralised zakat institutions that prioritise transparent administration and effective collection mechanisms. Such improvements in the zakat infrastructure could enhance muzakki compliance, directly supporting poverty alleviation and socio-economic development in Ethiopia.

Originality/value

This study provides unique insights into the factors shaping zakat payment intentions in Ethiopia, highlighting critical areas for improvement within the zakat collection and distribution framework. These findings provide a foundation for developing policies to foster a more effective zakat system that aligns with Ethiopia’s sociocultural dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

The heat transport phenomenon in which energy transfers due to temperature differences is an important topic of interest for scientists in recent times. It is because of its wide range of applications in numerous domains such as electronics, heat dispersion, thermoregulation, cooling mechanism, the managing temperature in automotive mobile engines, climate engineering, magnetoresistance devices, etc. On account of such considerations, the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) entropy rate for nanomaterial (CoFe2O4/C2H6O2) and hybrid nanomaterial (CoFe2O4+MoS4/C2H6O2) is analyzed. The Darcy–Forchheimer relation is utilized to describe the impact of a porous medium on a stretched sheet. Two nanoparticles molybdenum (MoS4) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) are combined to make hybrid nanomaterial (CoFe2O4+MoS4/C2H6O2). Heat flux corresponds to the Cattaneo–Christov model executed through heat transfer analysis. The influence of dissipation and heat absorption/generation on energy expression for nanomaterial (CoFe2O4+MoS4/C2H6O2) and hybrid nanomaterial (CoFe2O4+MoS4/C2H6O2) is described.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonlinear partial differential expressions have been exchanged into dimensionless ordinary differential expressions using relevant transformations. Newton’s built-in shooting method is employed to achieve the required results.

Findings

Concepts of fluid flow, energy transport and entropy optimization are discussed. Computational analysis of local skin friction and Nusselt number against sundry parameters for nanomaterial (CoFe2O4/C2H6O2) and hybrid nanomaterial (CoFe2O4+MoS4/C2H6O2) is engrossed. Larger magnetic field parameters decay fluid flow and entropy generation, while an opposite behavior is observed for temperature. Variation in magnetic field variables and volume fractions causes the resistive force to boost up. Intensification in entropy generation can be seen for higher porosity parameters, whereas a reverse trend follows for fluid flow. Heat and local Nusselt numbers rise with an increase in thermal relaxation time parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of clients' trust, opportunism and adaptation on contractual (non)cooperation with a mediating role of coordination in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was used to collect data from employees of the Pakistani construction industry. Smart partial least square (SmartPLS) has been used for analyzing the data of 270 respondents from construction projects.

Findings

The results of the SmartPLS indicate that (1) Trust and contract coordination positively while opportunism negatively influence contractor's contractual cooperation. (2) Contract adaptation and contract coordination positively influence the noncontractual cooperation of the contractor. (3) Moreover, contract coordination positively mediates the relationship between trust and noncontractual cooperation, but negatively mediates the relationship between opportunism and contract adaptation and noncontractual cooperation.

Practical implications

The findings of this research suggest several policy implications for administrative authorities, project managers and policymakers. These authorities need to focus on clients' trust, opportunism and adaptation because these factors significantly influence contract coordination and cooperation in the construction industry. Emphasizing these factors will enable project managers to gain economies of scale and mitigate project failure.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ search and knowledge, they did not find any study examining the mediating role of coordination between trust, opportunism, adaptation and cooperation in the construction industry. Hence, the present study advances their understanding in the field of project management and construction business.

Abstract

Purpose

In this digital age, the rapid technological innovation and adoption, with the increasing use of big data analytics, has raised concerns about the ability of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to sustain the competition and innovation performance (IP). To narrow the research gap, this paper investigates the role of big data analytics capability (BDAC) in moderating the relationship between digital innovation (DI) and SME innovation performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research has been carried forward through a detailed theory and literature analysis. Data were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models using a two-stage approach in smartPLS-4.

Findings

Results highlight that digital service capability (DSC) significantly mediates the relationship between DI and IP. Additionally, value co-creation (VCC) directly affects digital transformation (DT), while DI has a stronger effect on DSC than IP. Furthermore, BDAC significantly moderates the relation between DSC → IP and DT → IP, whereas it has a detrimental effect on the relation between DI and IP. In addition to that, VCC, DSC, DT, DI and BDAC have a direct, significant and positive effect on IP.

Practical implications

This research was motivated by the practical relevance of supporting SMEs in adopting DT and the resource-based view (RBV) and technology acceptance model (TAM). This study shows that all direct and indirect measures significantly affect innovation performance, including BDAC as moderator. These findings refresh the perspective on what DT, DI, VCC, DSC and BDAC can bring to a firm's innovation performance.

Originality/value

This paper has contributed to DT by empirically validating a theoretical argument that suggests the acceptance and adoption of new technology. This paper aims to fill theoretical gaps in understanding BDAC and DT by incorporating the RBV and TAM theories on BDAC and DT.
