Abstract

Purpose

This research explores wine customer interaction with connected packaging in retail, offering insights for wine producers to enhance customer behavioural engagement strategies. The study aims to understand patterns of customer visual attention and information preferences in the context of connected packaging.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopts an empirics-first (EF) approach, including a two-study mixed-method research design. EF is particularly suited to exploring emerging customer behaviours in innovative technological contexts. Study One uses Google Analytics and Tag Manager to measure connected packaging users’ visual attention and behavioural engagement. Study Two uses maximum difference scaling to assess user preferences for wine attributes in retail.

Findings

Study One reveals distinct patterns of user behavioural engagement. Highly engaged users exhibit deeper interaction with product, brand and sustainability information, often revisiting content. First-time users focus on top-of-page content before disengaging. Study Two results corroborate the importance of product information (grape variety, wine style and region of origin), with highly involved wine consumers showing greater interest in connected packaging.

Originality/value

This research advances the understanding of connected packaging user interaction and information preferences, an area previously underexplored. It demonstrates the potential of connected packaging for enhancing ongoing customer behavioural engagement and providing additional product information. The study’s innovative EF approach, combining real-world behavioural data with preference analysis, supports and extends existing research on wine attribute preferences while demonstrating the potential of connected packaging as an ongoing value co-creation tool.

Abstract

Purpose

This study adopts the customer journey framework to investigate the role of the metaverse in the customer purchase experience. It establishes the effect of the metaverse on the three stages of the customer purchase journey, namely pre-purchase, purchase and post-purchase, in the context of the fashion industry, an early adopter of the metaverse.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is a qualitative case study explored through consumer diaries and focus groups. The resultant data are analysed thematically.

Findings

Metaverse usage is the most significant at the pre-purchase stage. However, technical problems and other sources of friction negatively impact the customer experience journey, providing insight into the reasons underlying the recent decline of metaverse marketplaces.

Originality/value

This study’s empirical findings have theoretical and practical implications related to metaverse retailing and the customer experience journey. The study benefits metaverse designers and customers and will influence retail strategy choice. Additionally, it contributes two conceptual frameworks to the underdeveloped metaverse retailing field and extends the customer experience journey framework to the metaverse context, thus contributing to the body of knowledge on omnichannel retailing.

Abstract

Purpose

Fashion retailers have increasingly adopted consumer-facing in-store technology (CFIT) to enhance the customer experience/service provision. This paper aims to explore managerial experiences and sociotechnical implications of introducing these technologies into organizational working processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study draws on interpretive analysis of semi-structured interviews with 74 senior fashion retail industry practitioners, technology providers and consultants to understand managerial perspectives on technological innovation issues.

Findings

Endogenous and exogenous factors act as drivers or barriers to CFIT adoption and are influenced by strategic and tactical motives. Key issues that retail managers encounter include challenges in aligning technology implementation with retailer brand image to manage risk and reputation, with additional complexity arising from different internal and/or external actors involved, as well as required levels of change in organizational structure.

Originality/value

This study contributes an empirically derived framework identifying reasons for – and the drivers/barriers influencing – fashion retailers' CFIT adoption, classifying three broad approaches to CFIT adoption: embedded, transformative and opportunistic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purposes of this study are to identify the ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in metaverse retailing, and give insights to practitioners in the fashion industry who are planning to launch metaverse retailing.

Design/methodology/approach

To offer a balanced view of available evidence, this study adopted a literature review approach and attempted to collect all existing academic journal articles on the issues related to metaverse retailing and luxury fashion brands. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in electronic databases Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, Pro Quest and Science Direct from January 2023 to April 2024. Based on the results of the research in literature, real-life examples of luxury fashion brands were used to explain the ways that luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing can be put into practice.

Findings

The findings have revealed that there are many ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in the metaverse retailing. The fusion of metaverse-related technologies provides brands with a wide platform of choices that can create immersive, personalized marketing experiences for customers. Four roles of metaverse are identified: (1) enhance of immersive experience; (2) provide big data interface to smart decision-making; (3) form high-fidelity simulated space; and (4) maintenance economic system and making of identification. To further enhance the four roles of metaverse, four types of technologies and 15 components for metaverse can be adopted by luxury fashion brands.

Research limitations/implications

While this paper provides a literature review and real-life examples of luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing to explain the findings, further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of current efforts in the development of luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing through collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. Also, future studies may attempt to explore the challenges of investigating consumers in response to luxury fashion brands in the metaverse retailing.

Practical implications

The metaverse is turning imagination into reality through the integration of multiple technologies and is gaining momentum in tech. With technology leading the way, business leaders and brands must not only rethink retail but also bring immersive shopping experiences into the future. Metaverse has immense potential to transform the retail industry, thus the leading global and local firms must embrace innovation and new technologies, and prioritize “metaverse transformation” for their business. Based on the results of this study, some emerging practices pertaining to metaverse retailing are provided.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it would seem that this is the first work that conducts a literature review of the relevant academic journal articles addressed to the practitioners or managerial audiences in the area of luxury fashion industry who are concerned about the development of metaverse retailing. This paper identifies the ways that luxury fashion brands can leverage in the metaverse retailing and gives insights to practitioners in the luxury fashion industry who are planning to launch metaverse retailing.
