Abstract

Purpose

Using passive techniques like twisted tapes and corrugated surface is an efficient method of heat transfer improvement, since the referred manners break the boundary layer and improve the heat exchange. This paper aims to present an improved dual-flow parabolic trough collector (PTC). For this purpose, the effect of an absorber roof, a type of turbulator and a grooved absorber tube in the presence of nanofluid is investigated separately and simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

The FLUENT was used for solution of governing equation using control volume scheme. The control volume scheme has been used for solving the governing equations using the finite volume method. The standard k–e turbulence model has been chosen.

Findings

Fluid flow and heat transfer features, as friction factor, performance evaluation criteria (PEC) and Nusselt number have been calculated and analyzed. It is showed that absorber roof intensifies the heat transfer ratio in PTCs. Also, the combination of inserting the turbulator, outer corrugated and inner grooved absorber tube surface can enhance the PEC of PTCs considerably.

Originality/value

Results of the current study show that the PTC with two heat transfer fluids, outer and inner surface corrugated absorber tube, inserting the twisted tape and absorber roof have the maximum Nusselt number ratio equal to 5, and PEC higher than 2.5 between all proposed arrangements for investigated Reynolds numbers (from 10,000 to 20,000) and nanoparticles [Boehmite alumina (“λ-AlOOH)”] volume fractions (from 0.005 to 0.03). Maximum Nusselt number and PEC correspond to nanoparticle volume fraction and Reynolds number equal to 0.03 and 20,000, respectively. Besides, it was found that the performance evaluation criteria index values continuously grow by an intensification of nanoparticle volume concentrations.

Abstract

Purpose

Dietary supplements are important in improving maternal health and birth outcomes during pregnancy. This study aims to assess women’s knowledge about the benefits, sources and proper intake of dietary supplements during pregnancy.

Design/methodology/approach

This cross-sectional study was conducted among women at Jordan University Hospital in Amman, Jordan from July to October 2023.

Findings

A total of 448 women completed the questionnaire. Analysis of the results showed that among all questions, participants perceived sufficient knowledge about dietary supplements' beneficial effects. Around 50% of the participants did not recognize the importance of vitamin B12 and vitamin A. Most participants identified that iron supplements should not be taken with dairy products, coffee, tea, calcium and antacids. Most participants did not know the source of vitamin A (82.1%), and only 44% knew the correct source of vitamin B12. Less than half of the participants recognized the appropriate administration time for each dietary supplement.

Originality/value

The knowledge level of the interaction between iron and food, natural sources of vitamins and their benefits was high, less than half of the participants showed poor knowledge about the proper time to take the dietary supplement. Patient education and counseling is important to improve health outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the intricate relationship between housing prices and transaction volumes in Tehran, a city with diverse socioeconomic and regional characteristics. This research addresses a critical gap in understanding the role of local spatial factors, which previous studies have often overlooked, focusing instead on macroeconomic variables.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a data set of housing transactions of Metropolitan Tehran from 2010 to 2020 sourced from secondary data, this study uses generalized linear mixed models and spatial clustering techniques. These methods enable an examination of geographical clustering and the effects of local contextual variables on the dynamics between housing prices and transaction volumes.

Findings

Results indicate significant spatial heterogeneity within Tehran’s housing market. Higher prices and transaction volumes are concentrated in the northern and western regions, influenced by factors such as employment rates, rental housing supply and the physical attributes of the housing stock. The findings suggest that macroeconomic policies alone are insufficient to address housing challenges in Tehran; targeted, localized interventions are necessary.

Research limitations/implications

This study’s reliance on secondary data and its focus on a single urban environment may limit the generalizability of the findings. Further research incorporating a wider range of local and macro variables could strengthen the applicability of the results across different contexts.

Practical implications

This study underscores the need for region-specific housing policies that consider local economic, social and spatial conditions. Policymakers could improve housing affordability and accessibility in Tehran by implementing tailored strategies to address the distinct needs of different districts.

Originality/value

This study offers a novel perspective by integrating spatial and contextual factors in housing market analysis, providing insights that challenge the traditional macroeconomic focus. The use of advanced statistical and spatial analysis techniques contributes to a deeper understanding of urban housing market dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this research is to examine the influence of perceived service quality (PSQ) on word-of-mouth (WOM) directly and through the mediating role of brand trust (BTR) and student satisfaction (SAT) at private universities located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire and convenience sampling were utilized to collect data from 350 students enrolled in selected private universities in the TRNC. Data analysis was conducted using SmartPLS 4.

Findings

This study found that PSQ has a significant influence on WOM. BTR and SAT have a direct and significant effect on WOM. We also found that BTR and SAT mediate the link between PSQ and WOM.

Practical implications

These findings can serve as a guide for university administration to enhance the quality of services offered to students, as well as to enhance existing policies and procedures.

Originality/value

This paper’s originality lies in the use of cognitive-affective behavioural (CAB) to support the relationship between student perceptions of service quality, brand trust, student satisfaction and WOM.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to solve optimal pricing and power bidding strategy problem for integrated combined heat and power (CHP) system by using a modified heuristic optimization algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

In electricity markets, generation companies compete according to their bidding parameters; therefore, optimal pricing and bidding strategy are solved. Recently, CHP units are significantly operated by generation companies to meet power and heat, simultaneously.

Findings

For validation, it is shown that profit is improved by 0.04%–48.02% for single and 0.02%–31.30% for double-sided auctions. As heat price curve is extracted, the simulation results show that when CHP system is integrated with other units results in profit increase and emission decrease by 3.04%–3.18% and 2.23%–4.13%, respectively. Also, CHP units significantly affect bidding parameters.

Originality/value

The novelties are pricing and bidding strategy of integrated CHP system is solved; local heat selling is considered in pricing and bidding strategy problem and heat price curve is extracted; the effects of CHP utilization on bidding parameters are investigated; a modified heuristic and deterministic optimization algorithm is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conduct the domain mapping of consumer behaviour research in the context of solar energy. The study can help in understanding the intellectual structure, evolution of keywords and key research producers (at the author, institutional and source level) related to the domain of solar energy consumer research.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses R-studios’ bibliometrix package for analysing the bibliographical data collected from the Scopus database. Analysis has been conducted at the descriptive level (summary, author, institution and source) and analytical level (co-citation analysis, co-occurrence analysis, thematic maps and historiography).

Findings

This study finds out the most relevant authors, institutions and sources using criteria such as production, citations and H-index. Relevant research clusters have been identified using the clustering of authors, co-citations and keywords. Thematic mapping has identified the basic and motor themes. Historical citation analysis shows the direct linkage of previous studies. Overall, this study reports the most relevant bibliometric indicators in the domain of solar energy consumer research.

Practical implications

Identified patterns can help policymakers, business experts, social marketers and energy conservation organisations to study consumer behaviour.

Social implications

Thiis bibliometric study can effectively assess sustainable development goals and suggest improved action plans.

Originality/value

This study examined bibliometric analysis in solar energy products (SEPs), recognised varied domains of research work on consumers’ intention to purchase solar household products and mapped them into six groups. This study provides an overview of 40 years of research on consumer behaviour towards SEPs and discusses its findings to identify the research gap.

Abstract

Purpose

Emerging nations strive to diminish their ecological impact to meet net-zero targets, yet encounter formidable hurdles in curbing their environmental footprint. This purpose necessitated the study into impact of stock market, renewable energy and international investment on the ecological footprint in emerging countries from 1990 to 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used augmented mean group (AMG) estimator, cointegration and heterogenous panel causality approach.

Findings

Results from the AMG show that renewable energy consumption reduces environmental pollution in most countries except Mexico. The study disclosed that stock market capitalization decreases ecological footprint in emerging countries. Using both the Kao and Pedroni cointegration methods, the study affirms the existence of stable equilibrium relationship in the long term. The causality test concluded a bidirectional relationship between stock market and ecological footprint and a unidirectional link between international investment, clean energy and ecological footprint.

Research limitations/implications

The research is limited to only emerging countries. Therefore, future research should examine the environmental impacts of renewable energy consumption in different countries and regions, taking into account the local environmental conditions, policies and practices. This would help to identify the best practices and standards for minimizing the ecological footprint of renewable energy technologies and maximizing their benefits for environmental sustainability.

Practical implications

The study found that stock market capitalization reduces ecological footprint in Brazil, China, Turkey and India. To foster a culture of sustainability in stock market development impact, academic policies should emphasize the integration of environmental education across disciplines. By promoting awareness of the ecological consequences of stock market activities, societies can cultivate a mindset that values responsible economic practices. This, in turn, can lead to informed decision-making at individual and institutional levels.

Social implications

First, since the study found that clean energy reduces ecological footprint, advocating for utilization of clean energy sources could be a key priority in emerging countries. Governments should incentivize the development and adoption of renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar power, by providing subsidies and tax benefits. Furthermore, increasing awareness among residents about the benefits of clean energy and promoting its utilization in both residential and commercial environments can expedite the transition to a more environmentally friendly energy combination.

Originality/value

First, it pioneers an exploration into the interplay between stock market capitalization, international investment, clean energy and ecological footprint in emerging countries. Secondary unlike, unlike prior research, this study uses methodologies that account for cross-sectional dependencies and a unique characteristic specific to each country. In addition, by using common correlated effects mean group, AMG, cointegration and causality procedures, this study distinctly isolates and analyzes empirical findings for each country, leading to policy-oriented outcomes.
