Abstract
Purpose
With the widespread collection and utilization of user data, privacy security has become a crucial factor influencing online engagement. In response to the growing concern about privacy security issues on social media, this research aims to examine the key causes of social media users' privacy calculus and how the balance between perceived privacy risks and benefits affects users' privacy concerns and their subsequent willingness to disclose personal information.
Design/methodology/approach
The characteristics of the privacy calculus were extracted through partially structured interviews. A research model derived from privacy calculus theory was constructed, and latent variable modeling was employed to validate the proposed hypotheses.
Findings
Information sensitivity, experiences of privacy violations, social influence and the effectiveness of privacy policies influence users' privacy calculus. Privacy risk positively influences privacy concerns. Personal information disclosure willingness is positively influenced by privacy benefits and negatively influenced by privacy concerns, with both paths moderated by social media identification.
Originality/value
This study explores the key antecedents of users' privacy calculus and how these factors influence privacy concerns and subsequent willingness to disclose information on social media. It offers new insights into the privacy paradox observed within social media by validating the moderating role of social media identification on users' information disclosure willingness.

Abstract
Purpose
In recent years, there has been significant interest in adopting XR (extended reality) technologies such as VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality), particularly in retail. However, extending activities through reality-mediation is still mostly believed to offer an inferior experience due to their shortcomings in usability, wearability, graphical fidelity, etc. This study aims to address the research gap by experimentally examining the acceptance of metaverse shopping.
Design/methodology/approach
This study conducts a 2 (VR: with vs. without) × 2 (AR: with vs. without) between-subjects laboratory experiment involving 157 participants in simulated daily shopping environments. This study builds a physical brick-and-mortar store at the campus and stocked it with approximately 600 products with accompanying product information and pricing. The XR devices and a 3D laser scanner were used in constructing the three XR shopping conditions.
Findings
Results indicate that XR can offer an experience comparable to, or even surpassing, traditional shopping in terms of its instrumental and hedonic aspects, regardless of a slightly reduced perception of usability. AR negatively affected perceived ease of use, while VR significantly increased perceived enjoyment. It is surprising that the lower perceived ease of use appeared to be disconnected from the attitude toward metaverse shopping.
Originality/value
This study provides important experimental evidence on the acceptance of XR shopping, and the finding that low perceived ease of use may not always be detrimental adds to the theory of technology adoption as a whole. Additionally, it provides an important reference point for future randomized controlled studies exploring the effects of technology on adoption.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify the level of sustainability consciousness among preservice teachers in China under the “Double Carbon” goal.
Design/methodology/approach
A sustainability consciousness questionnaire was distributed to 2,795 preservice teachers aged 17–26 years old from first-year undergraduate to third-year postgraduate students through an online questionnaire tool. The mean, standard deviation and correlation of their sustainability knowingness, attitude and behavior were analyzed using SPSS software.
Findings
First, preservice teachers scored high in sustainability knowingness, attitude and behavior. Second, across different household types, disciplines and university levels (double first-class and nondouble first-class), preservice teachers’ sustainability consciousness scores were comparable to each other. Finally, a negative correlation was found between sustainability knowingness and attitude as well as knowingness and behavior. However, the authors observed a positive correlation between sustainability attitude and behavior. Overall, the level of sustainability consciousness among Chinese preservice teachers is high and no significant differences exist between the sustainability consciousness of preservice teachers with different household types, in different disciplines and at different levels of universities. Influenced by the contextual differences of the relevant concepts in the questionnaire, there is a certain degree of structural differences in the preservice teachers’ level of sustainability consciousness across the dimensions.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by investigating the current status of sustainability consciousness level among preservice teachers in China under the “Double Carbon” goal. The findings of this study provide universities and relevant departments with recommendations for education for sustainable development policies.

Purpose
Ultracapacitors find extensive applications in various fields because of their high energy density and long cycling periods. However, due to the movement of ions and the arrangement patterns on rough/irregular electrode surfaces during the charge and discharge process of ultracapacitors, the parameters of ultracapacitors usually change with the variation of operating conditions. The purpose of this study is to accurately and quickly identify the parameters of ultracapacitors.
Design/methodology/approach
A variable forgetting factor recursive least square (VFFRLS) algorithm is proposed in this paper for online identifying the equivalent series resistance and capacitance C of ultracapacitors. In this work, a real-time error-based strategy is developed to adaptively regulate the value of the forgetting factor of traditional forgetting factor recursive least square (FFRLS) algorithm. The strategy uses the square of the average time autocorrelation estimation of the prior error and the posterior error between the predicted output and the actual output as the adjustment basis of forgetting factors.
Findings
Experiments were conducted using the proposed scheme, and the results were compared with the estimation results obtained by the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm and the traditional FFRLS algorithm. The maximum root mean square error between the estimated values and actual values for VFFRLS is 3.63%, whereas for FFRLS it is 9.61%, and for RLS it is 19.33%.
Originality/value
By using the proposed VFFRLS algorithm, a relatively high precision can be achieved for the online parameter estimation of ultracapacitors. Besides, the dynamic balance between parameter stability and tracking performance can be validated by dynamically adjusting the forgetting factor.

Abstract
Purpose
With the rise of new generations of audiences, the marketing environment of theaters has undergone significant changes. The study investigates how transmedia storytelling, fan economy and social media marketing influence new audiences’ curiosity and drive their attendance intention at theater performances.
Design/methodology/approach
This study utilized an online questionnaire, collecting 1,032 valid responses from participants predominantly aged 18–30 (62.02%). Respondents from mainland China completed measures on five main variables.
Findings
The study reveals that curiosity played a mediating role in the influence of transmedia adaptation and social media marketing on attendance. Specifically, transmedia adaptation and social media marketing both positively impact attendance through curiosity. However, idol starring does not significantly affect either curiosity or attendance.
Research limitations/implications
Limitations include potential recall bias due to a high proportion of respondents with prior theater experience and preliminary measurement scales for idol starring. Future research could explore the interactions between transmedia adaptation and social media marketing and consider cross-cultural studies.
Practical implications
The study suggests that transmedia adaptation and social media marketing can effectively attract and engage new theatergoers.
Social implications
By targeting new audiences, this research highlights how modern marketing strategies can enhance audience engagement and accessibility of performing arts in China.
Originality/value
This research provides novel insights into new audiences’ decision-making process of their first visit to the theater. It offers a unique perspective on attendance behavior, addressing gaps in understanding audience engagement in performing arts.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effect of powder recycling on the microstructure of plasma-sprayed Ni625-WC composite coating and to verify the feasibility of Ni625-WC powder recycling by comparing the corrosion resistance of the coatings in high-temperature and pressure CO2 environment.
Design/methodology/approach
Recycling powder is an efficient way to improve the utilization rate of metal powder during plasma spraying. The plasma-sprayed Ni625-WC composite coatings with original powder (OC) and recovered powder (RC) were analytically compared by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the Ni625-WC composite coatings was characterized in a self-designed high-temperature and pressure autoclave by an electrochemical workstation.
Findings
The results showed that there is massive M23C6 in OC and acicular M23C6 in RC. The WC particles in RC are more uniformly distributed, and the area ratios of WC particles to Inconel 625 matrix are 2.37% higher than OC. RC showed high corrosion resistance, and the recycling of Ni625-WC powder is feasible.
Originality/value
The feasibility of Ni625-WC powder recycling was verified from the microstructure evolution and electrochemical behavior of the coatings.

The emergence of consumerism has led to regulatory measures being integrated into business practices, but the influence of consumers in developing countries remains limited, resulting in businesses being less responsive. The digital retail landscape is undergoing a transformative revolution, driven by Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI), wearables, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and blockchain technology. This development focuses on convenience, personalisation, and emotional connections. Companies are adapting to modern consumer behaviour through various strategies, including online shopping, mobile commerce, data analytics, technology integration, user reviews, and contactless payments. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this seismic shift in the retail industry, and online retail is expected to continue to grow post-pandemic, driven by these technologies. AI enhances the customer experience, wearables provide interactive engagement, VR offers immersive shopping, AR merges online and physical shopping, and blockchain ensures secure transactions in the emerging metaverse. As retail converges with the metaverse, the potential for borderless and personalised shopping experiences is enormous. Advances in VR technology could lead to interconnected virtual spaces that seamlessly connect physical and digital retail, providing immersive and personalised shopping experiences. However, challenges such as cost, learning curves, digital security, legal ambiguity, data privacy, financial risk, and ethical considerations need to be addressed through vigilant and informed consumer engagement in this evolving digital landscape.

Purpose
Loitering aerial vehicle (LAV) swarm safety flight control is an unmanned system control problem under multiple constraints, which are derived to prevent the LAVs from suffering risks inside and outside the swarms. The computational complexity of the safety flight control problem grows as the number of LAVs and of the constraints increases. Besides some important constraints, the swarms will encounter with sudden appearing risks in a hostile environment. The purpose of this study is to design a safety flight control algorithm for LAV swarm, which can timely respond to sudden appearing risks and reduce the computational burden.
Design/methodology/approach
To address the problem, this paper proposes a distributed safety flight control algorithm that includes a trajectory planning stage using kinodynamic rapidly exploring random trees (KRRT*) and a tracking stage based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC).
Findings
The proposed algorithm reduces the computational burden of the safety flight control problem and can fast find optimal flight trajectories for the LAVs in a swarm even there are multi-constraints and sudden appearing risks.
Originality/value
The proposed algorithm did not handle the constraints synchronously, but first uses the KRRT* to handle some constraints, and then uses the DMPC to deal with the rest constraints. In addition, the proposed algorithm can effectively respond to sudden appearing risks by online re-plan the trajectories of LAVs within the swarm.

Abstract
In contrast to other Chinese sports, which attract enormous commercial interests and relates to a kind of political kudos and ideological significance, Chinese baseball represents a singular case for the author to investigate the way in which China responds to sport globalisation due to its peripheral position in, and limited resource from, the domestic sport system and powerful stakeholders from the global society. The study examines the development of Chinese baseball and its interplay with the global sport giants and international events (i.e. the Olympic Games and the Major League Baseball [MLB]). Given the influence of sport globalisation, the author also identifies the consistent dominance of Chinese sport authorities and the spectrum of local stakeholders' reaction towards globalisation. The chapter ends with a discussion of the relationship between marginal position of Chinese baseball in the local sport system and the rationale of its response to sport globalisation.
