Abstract

Purpose

The construction industry has considerably evolved in the recent two decades due to the emergence of sustainability, lean construction (LC) and building information modelling (BIM). Despite previous research efforts, there is still a gap concerning the multidimensional nature of their integration. Hence, this study aims to fill the mentioned knowledge gap through exploring and comparing the challenges, enablers, techniques as well as benefits of integrating LC with BIM and sustainability in building construction projects.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted to fulfill the purpose of this study.

Findings

The findings reveal and compare the challenges, enablers, techniques and benefits of integrating LC with BIM and sustainability in building construction projects. The results suggest that there are eight common challenges for integrating LC with BIM and sustainability, including high initial cost, lack of collaboration, lack of professionals and lack of compatible contractual framework. The discovered challenges, enablers, techniques and benefits seem to be mostly routed in people. The findings also suggest that the synergistic benefits of integrating LC with BIM and sustainability can overcome the common challenges (safety, reliability, productivity, collaboration and quality) in construction projects.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the literature and practice concerning the integration of LC with BIM and sustainability by exploring, comparing and discussing the relevant challenges, enablers, techniques as well as benefits. Moreover, the findings reveal the significance of the development of people in construction industry, besides processes and technology, as people are always subject of activities in construction while processes and technology are always objects.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study aims to investigate the effects of opportunities and threats of using blockchain on the input, processing and output components of the financial reporting process within the fintech landscape.

Design/methodology/approach

This study administered a questionnaire in Iran to 121 university lecturers in accounting and auditing, independent auditors, financial managers and internal auditors to better understand the effect of blockchain on financial reporting. The responses were analysed using SPSS and Smart PLS Software.

Findings

This study demonstrates how blockchain technology can improve the financial reporting process in the fintech industry by providing opportunities for remote labour, improved accountant roles and task automation. Threats include the requirements for blockchain expertise, standardisation, security issues and decreased flexibility. Limited R&D resources pose problems for small businesses. The main advantages of outputs are continuous, timely financial reporting and comparability; the risks associated with customised reports and regulatory difficulties in managing non-financial and financial data are the main disadvantages. The results show that all indicators of opportunities to use blockchain positively and significantly affect financial reporting opportunities within the fintech context. In addition, all the indicators of the threats of using blockchain have a positive and significant effect on the threats of financial reporting in the fintech context.

Originality/value

The present study is designed to meet the needs of a blockchain-based financial reporting system in the fintech context. Rapid growth and transformation into an advanced digital system has increased the importance of understanding the effects of the opportunities and threats of applying blockchain technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for the digital transformation of university libraries based on meta-synthesis.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach of this research was qualitative and used the Sandelowski and Barroso’s (2007) seven-step meta-synthesis method to systematically review the literature. The statistical population of the research includes all the scientific publications related to the foundations and dimensions of the digital transformation of university libraries, counting the scientific publications retrieved from six scientific databases in the period from 2004 to 2022, and was based on the critical appraisal skills programme and a screening process.

Findings

Based on the retrieved publications, 32 documents were selected for further review and analysis. First, a separate code was considered for all the factors extracted from the selected documents, and then, considering the concept of each of the codes, they were categorized into a similar concept. In this way, the research concepts were determined. Based on the analysis done with the help of the content analysis method, there are a total of seven main categories and 24 concepts, including digital culture (including: digital attitude, user-oriented, agility, participation and cooperation, creativity and innovation and learning digital skills of employees), digital librarian (containing: individual competence, knowledge competence, communication competence and skill competence), digital manager (comprising: individual competence, knowledge competence, skill competence), digital services and resources (including, optimally reorganizing library resources, providing digital services to users and providing digital services to the mother organization), digital technologies (containing: digital infrastructure, technological readiness and using digital technologies), support and cooperation of upstream institutions and the mother organization (dealing with: providing human resources, providing technological resources and equipment and making macro policies) and work process and development of digital strategies (comprising: digitalization of processes and development of library digital strategies).

Originality/value

Digital transformation is a complex and multi-faceted process, yet it is an indispensable endeavour for university libraries, and managers and librarians cannot be expected to be familiar with these concepts without training or study and then be able to move in the right direction towards the digital transformation of libraries. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to develop a model for the digital transformation of university libraries. The results of this research indicate the effective factors and requirements needed for the digital transformation of university libraries and address the importance of understanding the concepts for managers and librarians.
