Abstract

Purpose

This study explored the relationship between servant leadership (SL) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) from the perspective of South Korean Police officers. We also investigated the mediating roles of psychological empowerment (PE) and organizational commitment (OC).

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors analyzed 439 survey responses from South Korean Police officers. The mediation model was tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results showed that SL had a significantly positive influence on OCB among South Korean Police. Moreover, PE and OC partially mediated the relationship between SL and OCB. Officers who perceive their leader as a servant leader are more likely to have a positive perception of OCB. These findings show that PE is a more efficient mediator than OC.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the generalization of knowledge by empirically testing the relationship between SL and OCB in the South Korean Police. The results show that SL theory can be applied to the Korean Police. By capturing the specific characteristics of the Korean Police, such as the powerful effect of PE, this study supports leadership contingency theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the determinants of green electronics purchase intention in Malaysia by extending existing knowledge on green consumer behavior and contributing to the field of sustainable consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research approach was adopted, with data collected from 250 Malaysian consumers. The proposed model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling to assess the relationships between various determinants and green purchase intention.

Findings

The results demonstrate that perceived consumer effectiveness, green advertising and monetary cost positively affect environmental attitudes, which subsequently influence green purchase intention. The study also identifies that brand image and information quality significantly enhance green brand trust (GBT), leading to stronger intentions to engage in green purchasing. Additionally, it finds that environmental knowledge and environmental concern shape perceived behavioral control, which further impacts green purchasing intention.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses on Malaysian consumers, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other cultural contexts. Future research could expand the scope to include cross-cultural comparisons to validate the model in different settings.

Practical implications

By providing insights into the key factors driving consumers’ intention to purchase green electronics, the study offers valuable guidance for marketers and manufacturers to develop targeted strategies that promote sustainable consumption and capitalize on the growing demand for green products in Malaysia.

Originality/value

This study is unique in measuring the influence of green attitude, GBT and perceived behavioral control on green purchase intention specifically within the electronics sector, offering a novel contribution to the literature on sustainable consumer behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The government support for research and development (R&D) initiatives in the pharmaceutical sector has been declining. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors influencing the efficacy of government R&D support programs directed at pharmaceutical enterprises in South Korea, aiming to provide valuable insights for policymakers responsible for resource allocation in the pharmaceutical industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses data from 490 R&D projects conducted by 106 pharmaceutical enterprises between 2018 and 2020, sourced from the National Technical Information Service and Drug Approval Research and Technology repositories. The data were analyzed using negative binomial regression analysis operated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.

Findings

Applied research, cooperative research and the number of doctoral researchers positively impact both the quantitative and qualitative performance of the papers. The number of doctoral researchers, government research funds and the ratio of private investment to total R&D investment positively impacted the quantitative and qualitative performance of patents. However, enterprise age negatively affected patent performance. Notably, sales were significantly associated with patent qualitative performance but not with patent quantitative performance.

Originality/value

While previous studies have primarily focused on specific types of government R&D support or individual sectors, this study provides a broader perspective by incorporating a variety of variables, to examine the overall performance of government R&D programs in the pharmaceutical sector. This paper addresses the growing concern over declining government support and offers insights that were not fully explored in prior studies. By doing so, this research highlights the importance of understanding how diverse factors collectively influence the effectiveness of government R&D support, providing new directions for innovation and excellence in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the increasingly salient role of smart manufacturing (SM) in revolutionizing operational processes, little research has explored the dynamics of corporate executives’ decision-making on SM projects after their initiation. To fill this research gap, this study examines the configurations of project complexities (i.e. technological breadth and organizational breadth) and industry conditions (i.e. industry growth and industry competition) that shape managerial decisions to complete or terminate SM projects.

Design/methodology/approach

Using secondary data of 125 SM projects implemented in 106 manufacturers during the 2011–2020 period, we conduct a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to empirically derive equifinal configurations that lead to the completion or termination of SM projects.

Findings

The results reveal that project complexities and industry conditions work together in configurations where manufacturers will complete or terminate SM projects. We employ prospect theory to elucidate the findings and offer propositions.

Originality/value

Our study extends the extant SM literature by revealing the configurations of project complexities and industry conditions that shape managerial decisions on the completion or termination of SM projects after their initiation. It contributes to the prospect theory literature by accounting for the roles of both decision content and decision context and providing empirical evidence on their joint effects on managerial risk-taking decisions that alter the subjective value and probability weight of decision outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

During the pandemic, restaurants closed due to restrictions and economic instabilities. This research paper aims to investigate the motivational effect of nostalgia induced by fear of missing out (FOMO) upon the e-WOM about the dining place. Did FOMO evoke nostalgic memories and emotional symptoms with the dining place? It further inspected if the diners trust the restaurant for these nostalgic memories and their emotional connect.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey-based questionnaire was applied to collect data. A two-step method for analyzing the measurement and structural model was applied by using the principles of SEM to analyze the associations among key constructs in the proposed model.

Findings

Psychological constructs like nostalgia and personality drove the diners’ behavior of trust and e-WOM. The findings also confirmed the mediation effect of brand nostalgia, brand personality and brand trust between FOMO and e-WOM. Further, the model has elucidated the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) and usage gratification theories.

Originality/value

This paper has contributed to the branding literature by examining how brand constructs have mediated the path between FOMO and e-WOM. Multiple serial mediation effect among the key variables has been a novel contribution of this study. The ELM and the usage gratification theory have been integrated to extend the theoretical underpinnings in the hospitality sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to integrate the componential model of creativity and innovation with a participative safety perspective to investigate the association between autonomy support and innovation as well as the organizational factors that strengthen this association. Specifically, the study suggests that autonomy support is more effective in fostering innovation in organizations characterized by higher levels of trust, strong organizational fairness and effective communication.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed hypotheses were investigated using moderated mediation models with panel data collected over four waves.

Findings

This study found that autonomy support positively contributes to organizational innovation. Moderation analyses demonstrated that trust, perceptions of fairness and communication strengthen the effect of autonomy support on innovation.

Originality/value

This study is the first to demonstrate the moderating roles of various organizational contexts (i.e. trust, fairness perception and communication) in the association between autonomy support and innovation and to investigate the role of trust as a mediating moderator.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to produce textile-like surfaces using fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printers and create a garment collection.

Design/methodology/approach

Experiments were conducted using different types of materials in FDM 3D printers until the sufficient flexibility was achieved to create textile-like structures. During the research, properties of polylactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) were observed. Geometrical patterns were printed and each of them gave a different result depending on the pattern. Based on the information obtained from the experiments, a garment collection with four total looks was designed inspired by Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”.

Findings

Among the materials used, TPU, a flexible filament, yielded the best results. Because of the rigid properties of PLA and ABS, chain-like structures were printed to create relatively flexible surfaces, but the results were still not successful enough to create a clothing material. Therefore, TPU was preferred for the garment material selection.

Originality/value

In this study, combinations of 3D printed flexible structures and different types of fabrics were used to create a garment collection. It was concluded that, with the right material selection, 3D printing can be used as an alternative method to create a new aesthetic language in fashion design.

Abstract

Purpose

This study applies organizational information processing theory (OIPT) to investigate managing production process variability in uncertain environments using information technology (IT) capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

We conduct an empirical analysis using the three-stage least squares (3SLS) technique on 1,612 manufacturing firms over ten years.

Findings

The findings show that IT capability plays a dual role: it reduces the positive impact of environmental uncertainty on production process variability and mitigates the negative relationship between production process variability and operational performance.

Practical implications

Our findings suggest that managers should focus on reducing production process variability by strengthening their firms' IT capabilities. This is particularly crucial in volatile environments where external uncertainties can significantly impact operational processes.

Originality/value

Variability in the production process is a significant source of inefficiency and disruption within business processes. Using OIPT, our study contributes to the field by empirically analyzing the role of IT capabilities in reducing production process variability under environmental uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the policy-driving forces (PDFs) influencing the adoption of modular integrated construction (MiC) in Hong Kong (HK). It focuses on understanding how these forces impact MiC implementation across different construction phases, providing insights for policymakers to enhance sector productivity, efficiency and sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilising system dynamics (SD) modelling, this research simulates the dynamic influence of PDFs on MiC adoption throughout various construction stages. Data collection involved questionnaires, surveys and case studies, which established the basis for detailed simulation scenarios to understand the timing and impact of PDFs.

Findings

The results indicate that PDFs exert the most significant influence during the initiation phase of MiC adoption, followed by the construction and planning and/or design phases. Regulative PDFs emerged as the most potent drivers in enhancing MiC uptake at each phase. Based on these insights, the study proposes six strategic recommendations to promote MiC adoption, emphasising the utility of MiC in emergency infrastructures.

Originality/value

This research introduces a novel application of SD modelling to quantitatively assess the impact of PDFs on MiC adoption in Hong Kong’s construction industry. It provides a dynamic, systematic perspective on policy impacts, offering actionable insights for effective policymaking. Through scenario simulations, this study equips policymakers with the tools to foresee outcomes of policy adjustments, thus enabling informed decisions to foster widespread MiC adoption for sustainable development.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between the rework cycle with system dynamics (SD) models and the Project Management Institute (PMI) process group.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the aim of this paper, 84 articles that blended SD models and project management (PM) were analysed to identify key variables used in PM modelling. The key variables were utilised to build an extended SD model with multiple rework cycles to explain the link between the rework cycle SD model and PMI process group.

Findings

The results show that SD might be a favourable approach to capture the reality of the project life cycle when it is extended to represent front-ending, delivery and back-ending. In fact, SD models could potentially be extended to the agile and hybrid methodologies for improving the PM.

Research limitations/implications

Although this paper provides a better understanding about the extended project life cycle by SD modelling, the results reported herein should be considered in future research that comprises the design of a SD model considering the agile and hybrid methodologies for PM.

Practical implications

This paper shows how the rework cycle can be applied to the extended project life cycle and the PMI process groups. Additionally, it highlights why SD modelling is a crucial tool for assisting managers with long-term decision-making in PM.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to explore the integration of rework cycle SD models within the PMI process groups. Specifically, it may prove valuable in supporting decision-making for project managers at each stage of a project’s extended life cycle. As a result, the research also contributes to the ongoing discussion on integrating PM with sustainability and innovation considerations.

Propósito

Este artículo tiene como objetivo contribuir a una mejor comprensión de la relación entre el ciclo de retrabajo con modelos de dinámica de sistemas (DS) y el grupo de procesos del Instituto de Gestión de Proyectos (PMI, por su sigla en inglés).

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Para lograr el objetivo de este artículo, se analizaron 84 artículos que combinaban modelos de DS y gestión de proyectos (PM, por su sigla en inglés) para identificar las variables clave utilizadas en el modelado de PM. Las variables clave se utilizaron para construir un modelo de DS extendido con múltiples ciclos de retrabajo para explicar el vínculo entre el modelo de DS del ciclo de retrabajo y el grupo de procesos de PMI.

Resultados

Los resultados muestran que la DS puede ser un enfoque favorable para capturar la realidad del ciclo de vida del proyecto cuando se extiende para representar el inicio, la entrega y el final. De hecho, los modelos DS podrían extenderse potencialmente a las metodologías ágiles e híbridas para mejorar la gestión de proyectos.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

Aunque este documento proporciona una mejor comprensión sobre el ciclo de vida extendido del proyecto mediante el modelado de DS, los resultados informados aquí deben considerarse en futuras investigaciones que comprendan el diseño de un modelo DS considerando las metodologías ágiles e híbridas para la gestión de proyectos.

Implicaciones prácticas

Este documento muestra cómo se puede aplicar el ciclo de revisión al ciclo de vida extendido del proyecto y a los grupos de procesos de PMI. Además, el documento establece por qué el modelado DS es un enfoque importante para ayudar a los gerentes con la toma de decisiones gerenciales a largo plazo.

Originalidad/valor

Este estudio es uno de los primeros en explorar la integración de los modelos de DS de ciclo de trabajo dentro de los grupos de procesos PMI. Específicamente, puede ser valioso para apoyar la toma de decisiones para los gerentes de proyectos en cada etapa del ciclo de vida extendido de un proyecto. Como resultado, la investigación también contribuye a la discusión continua sobre la integración de la gestión de proyectos con consideraciones de sostenibilidad e innovación.
