Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to explore the connections between tacit knowledge management and the capacity to create new products and services for stimulating organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research utilizes a questionnaire-based study and 378 questionnaires gathered from different provinces of China between August and October 2022. The SmartPLS technique was used to evaluate the regression and mediation analysis on lower-order and higher-order components of the research hypotheses behind the model.

Findings

This investigation's results indicate that the tacit knowledge management process (TKMP) significantly drives product and service innovation and impacts organizational performance (ORP). According to the results, TKMP did not directly influence ORP and product innovation to mediate between Tacit knowledge and organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should concentrate on different combinations of influences on innovation and other consequences of introducing innovation into businesses. Moreover, researchers may add moderators to innovation and organizational performance.

Practical implications

This study assists managers in how tacit knowledge management affects organisational performance by examining product/service innovation capabilities. Product innovation also mediates between tacit knowledge and organizational performance. Service innovation improves organizational performance, prioritizing knowledge creation, sharing and retention to increase innovation and organizational success.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on tacit knowledge management, innovation capability and organizational performance by concentrating on the tacit knowledge process and using the resource-based view. This study gives a solid theoretical and practical basis for understanding the component interactions.

Abstract

Purpose

With ambidextrous innovation (AI) gaining paramount importance in the manufacturing sectors of emerging markets, this research aim to explore how leadership and management support (LMS) amplify this type of innovation by leveraging knowledge sources (KS). The study further probes the knowledge management capability (KMC) as moderating effect between KS and AI.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the convenient random sampling technique of a sample of 340 professionals within Pakistan’s manufacturing realm, data was collated via a structured questionnaire. The subsequent analysis harnessed the power of the variance-based partial least squares structural equation modelling approach.

Findings

This research underscores the pivotal role of LMS in elevating both facets of AI i.e. exploitative innovation (ERI) and exploratory innovation (ERT). KS emerge as a vital intermediary factor that bridges LMS with both types of innovation. Notably, the potency of KS in driving AI is significantly boosted by an organization’s KMC.

Originality/value

This study fills existing gaps in contemporary research by offering a nuanced perspective on how LMS enrich an organization’s dual innovation spectrum via KS. It sheds light on the symbiotic interplay of leadership, knowledge flows and innovation in Pakistan’s burgeoning manufacturing sector.

Abstract

Purpose

Given innovation's significance, this research examines the link between empowered leadership and frugal innovation. The research also explores how collaborative cultures and organizational commitment mediate empowered leadership's effect on frugal innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative method is used with the approach of hierarchical regression to test the hypotheses with data obtained from Pakistani small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the questionnaire from 288 participants.

Findings

The results of this study show that empowered leadership has a considerable impact on the firm's capacity for frugal innovation. Additionally, this study shows that organizational commitment and collaborative culture significantly moderate the association between empowering leadership and frugal innovation.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should examine mediating factors, including employment experience, education and perceived organizational support, and moderating variables like employee psychological empowerment and leadership styles.

Practical implications

This research advises SMEs in developing nations to utilize frugal innovation since they cannot afford to spend extensively on technologies that add creativity and innovation to goods and services.

Originality/value

This study advances how leadership both directly and indirectly helps organizations strengthen their capacity for frugal innovation through the mediating roles of collaborative culture and organizational commitment.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this empirical study is to identify the relationship between student accommodation characteristics (SACs) and academic performance (AP). SACs, considered as the single independent variable, were divided into three further constructs: perceived location advantage (PLA), perceived facilities (PFs) and perceived safety and security (PSS). This study also intends to uncover the mediating role of perceived overall satisfaction (POS) over the direct relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a cross-sectional quantitative survey methodology to investigate the hypothesized relationships based on 384 sample responses (n) selected using purposive sampling techniques from six Scottish universities. The study used IBM SPSS version 29 and partial least squares-structural equation modeling version 4 for descriptive statistics and for testing the hypotheses, respectively.

Findings

Based on survey responses and the application of proper statistical measures, this study found that all three independent constructs (PLA, PFs and PSS) have a significant positive association with the dependent variable, AP. The mediator (POS) was also found to be positively correlated with AP. Furthermore, this study identified that POS can partially mediate all three direct relationships.

Originality/value

By extending and validating current theories such as satisfaction frameworks, student engagement models and servicescape psychology, this study can significantly advance the current state of the literature. It highlights how crucial holistic satisfaction can mediate the association between academic achievement and the features of student housing. The results provide theoretical justification for incorporating accommodations into planning and policy for education. Additionally, by emphasizing on the crucial elements that enhance students’ well-being and academic achievement, such as location, safety, aesthetics and extensive support services, the study offers significant management insights.

Abstract

Purpose

The majority of Malaysian firms are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the hospitality industry is no exception. However, a study on environmental management systems (EMS) reveals that relatively few studies have observed EMS implementation in small and medium-sized enterprises hotels (SMEHs). Hence, this study aims to determine the link between institutional influences and mediating effects of top managers' perceived benefits toward EMS implementation by Malaysian SMEHs.

Design/methodology/approach

The results of a questionnaire survey of 252 SMEHs managerial-level professionals using Smart-PLS software provide some explanation for the marginal action taken by these SMEHs to improve their environmental performance.

Findings

Based on the findings, five variables might stimulate the implementation of an EMS: regulatory influences, customer influences, competitor influences, employee influences and manager attributes influences.

Research limitations/implications

This study significantly advances understanding of EMS and SMEHs, offering a replicable research framework applicable across industries and countries. Scholars can leverage the framework for further exploration, while managers should recognize institutional influences on EMS implementation.

Originality/value

Given that this study is one of the few that investigates the institutional influences and perceived benefits of EMS implementation, it may provide valuable information for future research on the hospitality industry and the SMEHs among researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze three major defaults on Sukuk since 2007. These case studies make clear that, in most cases, the problems can be traced back to clauses and structures that made the Sukuk more like conventional bonds. The case studies highlighted the importance of the legal institutions of the country where ownership rights are likely to be contested. Strict adherence to Shariah (Islamic Jurisprudence) principles would have considerably simplified restructuring because Shariah compliance implies a clear allocation of property rights: in Sukuk, investors will receive full title to the underlying Sukuk assets in distress situations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study follows a qualitative research method base on detailed case studies of the Sukuk defaults occurred in the aftermath of financial crises 2007. The focus in this paper is on the resolution process following default, not on the reasons why the default was triggered to begin with. The authors analyze the Sukuk defaults from an Islamic finance perspective. Specifically, after providing basic information on each Sukuk (issuer, arranger, SPV, term period, rate of return, etc.), the authors present an exposition of the underlying contracts of each Sukuk, their structure, reasons for defaults and restructuring process thereafter. Finally, the authors provide a discussion on the critical issues related to Sukuk structures, namely, ownership of underlying Sukuk assets, rights of the investors including recourse, if any, to core assets in case of distress, risk factors including legal and Shariah risks regarding Sukuk structures, purchase undertakings and credit enhancements.

Findings

The case studies highlighted the importance of the legal institutions of the country where ownership rights are likely to be contested. The paper provides in depth analysis of the Sukuk defaults and provide the main reasons for that along with recommendations that compliance to Shariah principles of ownership and risk sharing would reduce incidence of defaults and facilitates restructuring.

Abstract

This paper provides a snapshot of educational and economic trends across South Asia with an exploratory and comparative approach. Before COVID-19, South Asia was the world’s fastest-growing regional economy, concurrently achieving major strides in poverty reduction and access to education. Despite the region’s economic and educational accomplishments, the countries of South Asia fall short of international benchmarks in public education expenditure, resulting in a persistent lag in educational quality that hampers individuals, the workforce, and overall economic productivity. The paper highlights themes in the literature, including context-specific evidence for the various theories of economic growth, the returns to education, and educational inputs (e.g., teachers and private schools) that highlight how spending can be leveraged to increase educational outcomes. In addition, it examines the relationship between education, poverty, and marginalization factors that explain why some populations are deprived of education and its benefits. We provide a broad perspective of the dynamics of the economics of education and the related challenges in this region. This discussion aims to enhance the understanding of the inefficiencies in South Asia’s educational systems and, ultimately, in the development of the region’s human capacities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study employs the norm activation model (NAM) and the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to investigate the drivers of consumers’ buying intent (BUI) for eco-friendly products (EFP). The primary emphasis is on eco-consciousness, which includes environmental literacy (ENL) and environmental concern (ENC). The research further examines the mediating role of ENC in the relationship between ENL and BUI while also considering the sequential mediation effects involving both ENC and eco-responsible practices (ERP). Additionally, the study explores the moderating influence of attitude (ATT) on the relationship between ENC and ERP and its effect on ERP and BUI.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing purposive sampling, 412 online survey responses were statistically analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The findings of this study demonstrate that ENL exerts a significant and positive influence on ENC, subsequently enhancing BUI. Moreover, there is a positive relationship between ENC and ERP and ERP and BUI. This research further indicates that ENC positively mediates the relationship between ENL and BUI. Additionally, ENC and ERP sequentially and positively mediate the relationships involving ENL and BUI. Furthermore, the results suggest that the strength of the association between ENC and ERP marginally decreases (trivial), and the strength of the relationship between ERP and BUI decreases (small).

Originality/value

This study advances the existing body of knowledge by integrating NAM and ELM to examine the drivers of consumers’ BUI toward EFP thoroughly. The research offers novel insights into the relationship between ENL and ENC and their effects on ERP and BUI, underscoring the significant role of consumers’ eco-consciousness. The findings have practical implications for businesses and policymakers who seek to formulate strategies that align with consumers’ psychological, cognitive, and behavioural processes in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12), which can contribute to the global effort to foster more eco-friendly products and a sustainable future.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the integration of workplace spirituality in organizational practices and its contribution to sustainability. By investigating three organizations in Pakistan’s social sector and microfinancing, the research seeks to identify convergences with known workplace spirituality dimensions and uncover new spiritual practices of case study organizations promoting sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate WS practices in the selected organizations, a qualitative multiple-case research methodology was used. Semi-structured interviews, focus groups and organizational document analysis were used to gather data. The elements of workplace spirituality and their connections to sustainability were identified and categorized using thematic analysis. With a focus on concrete insights into the real-world applications of WS in promoting sustainability, the study is driven by a pragmatic approach.

Findings

Empathy, meaningful work, ethical conduct and employee well-being are among the WS elements identified by the research that are in line with the body of current literature. These dimensions foster social cohesiveness, moral decision-making and comprehensive employee support. Unique contributions to economic empowerment and sustainability are highlighted by new aspects including halal earnings, volunteer assistance through Qarz-e-Hasana (interest-free loans) and a triple bottom line emphasis. These actions highlight WS’s vital role in attaining long-term sustainability and empowering marginalized populations.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s scope is restricted to three microfinance and social sector organizations in Pakistan, which can limit the findings’ applicability to other industries or geographical areas. Furthermore, subjectivity is introduced by the use of qualitative approaches and context-specific cultural elements may affect how workplace spirituality is interpreted. For a more comprehensive knowledge of the effect of WS on sustainability, future studies might broaden the scope by including a variety of sectors and using mixed-method techniques.

Practical implications

For businesses looking to incorporate workplace spirituality into their operations to ensure sustainability, this research offers practical insights. Organizations may improve employee engagement, establish trust and advance social well-being by using strategies like encouraging empathy, encouraging moral behavior and aiding underprivileged populations. To ensure sustainability, the results urge leaders to match their organizational goals with spiritual concepts. Furthermore, a triple-bottom-line approach and the introduction of novel practices like Qarz-e-Hasana provide a path forward for resolving societal injustices and advancing holistic development.

Originality/value

In addition to examining new and developing issues in the literature on workplace spirituality, this research looked at how workplace spirituality is constructed in Pakistani organizations and offered suggestions for new, sustainable organizational practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the determinants influencing green mindfulness among university students in Malaysia within the context of the Malaysia 2030 Agenda, focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 17 attainment.

Design/methodology/approach

The research uses a quantitative approach with a sample of 203 young adults. It explores the factors of goal difficulty, knowledge and awareness, spirituality, values and perceived university environmental responsibility (PUER), using a novel theoretical framework termed universal identity theory (IT).

Findings

Values, knowledge and awareness and PUER significantly contribute to green mindfulness, whereas spirituality and goal difficulty did not exhibit a substantial relationship to green mindfulness.

Research limitations/implications

Limited representation of diverse age groups and the potential influence of seniority on spirituality. Future research should expand the framework to include green behavior and performance, increase the sample size and consider a broader age demographic.

Practical implications

Universities play a crucial role in promoting green mindfulness through the establishment of rules, regulations, environmental initiatives, incentive systems and the introduction of a green mindfulness course. Clear communication channels and top-down approaches are recommended.

Social implications

This research contributes to understanding the mechanisms that induce green mindfulness among university students in Malaysia, aligning with national and global sustainability goals.

Originality/value

The universal IT provides a comprehensive understanding of how personal, social and community-based identities collectively influence green mindfulness. This theoretical perspective contributes to the environmental psychology and sustainability studies field, offering a culturally sensitive approach.
