Abstract

Purpose

With a growing preference for active, authentic, and cultural experiences over traditional ones, creative tourism has garnered significant academic interest. This study offers a comprehensive review of creative tourism research, delineating its evolution, prominent contributors, pivotal areas, and prospective trajectories through a bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing a bibliometric analysis using the biblioshiny and VOSviewer software, this study systematically reviews 198 articles on creative tourism identified and retrieved from the Scopus database.

Findings

A notable increase in creative tourism research is witnessed in recent times, with Portugal and the Netherlands leading in publications and citations, respectively. This review also pinpoints key authors, countries, institutions, and journals shaping the field, and presents emerging themes such as authenticity and creative experience, culture and heritage, urban and rural contexts, and co-creation in creative tourism.

Practical implications

Identifying core research contributors (authors, countries, institutions, journals) and contributions (themes, topics) assists academics in seeking collaborations and shaping future research. Practitioners are advised to adapt these trends (authenticity, co-creation, sustainability) into their strategic planning to meet market demands.

Originality/value

This study offers a seminal review of creative tourism through a bibliometric analysis, a technique that leverages the power of technology (data, software) to engage in retrospection and projection—the hallmark of benchmarking studies across fields, including tourism. Noteworthily, this study provides a detailed summary of the field’s trajectory and significant trends, positioning itself as an essential reference for academic scholars, industry professionals, and policymakers with a keen interest in creative tourism.

Abstract

Purpose: This chapter examines the concept of “green orientation” within corporate environments by systematically reviewing literature indexed in Scopus from 2000 to 2023. The focus is on addressing knowledge gaps related to understanding green orientation, emphasising sustainability and stability as indispensable components for organisational success.

Methodology: Utilising a bibliometric analysis, a statistical panorama of the literature landscape is presented. The study identifies and delineates five discernible research gaps, constructing a conceptual framework or nomological network.

Findings: Noteworthy discoveries emanate from this study, notably identifying research lacunae and developing a conceptual framework delineating the interrelatedness among the discerned constructs. The framework accentuates the significance of High-Performance Work Practices, authentic leadership, green orientation, employee engagement, and job performance in cultivating corporate sustainability.

Implications: In practical terms, this research provides valuable insights for organisations aspiring to augment their sustainability endeavours. The comprehension of interrelationships among the identified constructs serves as a strategic guide for decision-making, empowering businesses to align with the principles of green orientation and advocate for environmentally friendly practices.

Originality: The significance of this research lies in its systematic response to the imperative for comprehensive investigations into green orientation. The formulated conceptual framework introduces a distinctive perspective, establishing a groundwork for subsequent research endeavours. Moreover, it constitutes an original synthesis of quantitative and qualitative knowledge in the field, thereby advancing scholarly understanding.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to revisit the conventional wisdom about a key contribution [i.e. strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis] in the field of strategic management. The societal context and the role of academics, consultants and executives is taken into account in the emergence of SWOT analysis during the 1960–1980 period as a pivotal development within the broader context of the satisfactory, opportunities, faults, threats (SOFT) approach. The authors report on both the content and the approach, so that other scholars seeking to invigorate indigenous theories and/or underreported strategy practices will thrive.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying a historiographic approach, the authors introduce an evidence-based methodology for interpreting historical sources. This methodology incorporates source criticism, triangulation and hermeneutical interpretation, drawing upon insights from robust evidence through three iterative stages.

Findings

The underreporting of the SOFT approach/SWOT analysis can be attributed to several factors, including strategy tools being integrated into planning frameworks rather than being published as standalone materials; restricted circulation of crucial long-range planning service/theory and practice of planning reports due to copyright limitations; restricted access to the Stanford Research Institute Planning Library in California; and the enduring popularity of SOFT and SWOT variations, driven in part by their memorable acronyms.

Originality

In the spirit of a renaissance in strategic planning research, the authors unveil novel theoretical and social connections in the emergence of SWOT analysis by combining evidence from both theory and practice and delving into previously unexplored areas.

Research implications

Caution is advised for scholars who examine the discrete time frame of 1960–1980 through mere bibliometric techniques. This study underscores the risks associated with gathering incomplete and/or inaccurate data, emphasizing the importance of triangulating evidence beyond scholarly databases. The paradigm shift of strategic management research due to the advent of large language models poses new challenges and the risk of conserving and perpetuating academic urban legends, myths and lies if training data is not adequately curated.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on strategy, marketing strategy and airport marketing strategy concepts from an aviation and marketing point of view. Furthermore, in this chapter, we introduced a new and innovative airport marketing strategy concept and how this can influence tourism, financials, business, consumers' behaviour, sustainability and aviation activities. This chapter also analyses how operators implement new airport strategies to improve their operability, sustainability, governance and customer satisfaction. When selling an innovative product or service, the airport operator needs to examine the underlying factors that drive passengers' purchasing decisions. Airport marketing strategies are changing in the aviation and tourism sectors due to the pandemic crisis and Ukraine's war, and operators subsequently need to consider these new factors when they develop new marketing plans and goals.

Abstract

This chapter aims to outline the ways in which symbolic interactionism shifts the focus of inquiry into sex from being sexual toward becoming sexual, which takes into account doing sexualities, rather than tracing their origins in a static conception of nature. This means that our being sexual varies according to the rituals and performances in which we are involved as part of our daily lives. Such is the case any time we perform a role to communicate our identity to one or more audiences from communicative, expressive, aesthetic, and verbal points of view. This process is particularly manifest in male sex working where social actors are involved in the use of excuses, justifications and, generally, motive talk that are useful to neutralize their own sexual conducts and negotiate the gender appearance and sexual practices. Using the late developments of sexualities' symbolic interactionist studies emphasized by sexual scripts theory, the chapter focuses on the theoretical necessity to understand that there are far more reasons to be sexual than ways to be sexual.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show the spatial extent and growth of tourism and its likely patterns as past forces of change are replaced by new pressures to reduce climate change and meet new definitions of success.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach involves a review of changes that have occurred over the Horizon period with a focus on the spatial spread and development of tourism, using and based on a literature review, past research and personal experience. Likely new developments are identified based on the expected result of influences including climate change mitigation and altered understandings of what is meant by success in tourism.

Findings

Much of the spatial change in tourism has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but in the future, restrictive forces external to tourism may change travel patterns with severe effects on long haul travel and a change in travel mode.

Research limitations/implications

The research focus needs to produce effective measures of success as understood by all stakeholders in tourist destinations. Alternative destinations will need to replace those long haul destinations no longer available and research needs to refocus on managing rather than solely attracting visitors.

Practical implications

Long haul destinations will lose market share, destinations will change goals to satisfaction for stakeholders and travel modes will change to lower emission generators.

Social implications

Destination choice will be reduced, transport modes may be limited and tourism closer to home will become the norm.

Originality/value

A general overview of this type has not been presented before.
