Abstract
Purpose
This research identifies the individual socioeconomic and urban infrastructure attributes that explain the sales performance of informal street vendors in Dhaka, Bangladesh, shedding light on areas where public intervention could enhance informal vendors’ entrepreneurial activities.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a quantitative methodology, focusing on two street vending areas in Dhaka: New Market Area and Mirpur-1. Primary data (n = 243) were randomly collected from vendors in these areas. The importance of various attributes was estimated using non-parametric, non-linear methods (random forests and geographical random forests). These results were compared with those obtained from linear multiple regression and Lasso regression models.
Findings
The study shows that having a designated vending spot is the most important attribute associated with higher sales, confirming the critical role of secure vending locations in urban planning policy. Other significant factors include the width of the sidewalk and the level of odors, indicating the role of urban infrastructure on sales performance. Key individual socioeconomic factors include having a bank account and working experience. The initial economic situation, measured by the log of initial capital, also plays a significant role, especially when accounting for spatial heterogeneity.
Originality/value
This research explores the relationship between individual socioeconomic characteristics, urban infrastructure and street vendors' sales performance using advanced machine learning models. Our findings underscore the significance of adequate street vending infrastructure and access to banking services, highlighting critical areas for public policy intervention to support this vital entrepreneurial activity.

Consciously or unconsciously, every management researcher adopts a certain philosophical perspective. In this chapter, I discuss the connection between philosophy and management research and show how philosophical perspectives affect the perception of empirical phenomena, choice of research methods, and interpretation of research results. The discussion indicates that the connection is far more crucial than what many management researchers may have thought. I then share my experience of studying philosophy and provide suggestions to those who are interested in enhancing their knowledge of the subject.

The businesses at the global level are surfacing precipitously, and its ecosystem is illustrated by the factors of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. The rapidly changing business landscape calls for incorporating virtual exertion and the adoption of various digital tools. The process of virtual onboarding which has gained prominence at the global level at the onset of the pandemic necessitates encompassing recruits using virtual podiums and remote processes. The current chapter insinuates a holistic model for a suitable virtual onboarding programme, delineating a comprehensive methodology that incorporates a range of onboarding process elements and syndicates business best exercises from several theoretical backgrounds. It intends to offer a robust framework that suitably guides business organisations in developing and implementing effective virtual onboarding programmes. The Virtual Onboarding Model outlined in the present study elucidates the five integral phases, each serving a specific purpose and strategically integrating them from the outcomes derived from various theoretical underpinnings. The outcomes of this chapter provide detailed assistance for businesses operating in the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) world to establish comprehensive remote onboarding programmes. It aims to endow human resource (HR) managers with the indispensable intuitions to create and execute virtual onboarding programmes that support successful learning, cultural integration and employee engagement, ultimately benefiting both the recruits and the businesses in contemporary HR practices.

Abstract
Purpose
Our research takes inspiration from stories of kindness in the context of the COVID-19 global pandemic and investigates what generational entrants, namely those entering the workforce in large numbers, dubbed emerging leaders (ages 19–39) think of the phenomenon of kindness and its potential role in organizations. Guiding the study is the question: “What can emerging leaders tell us about kindness and work?”
Design/methodology/approach
Adopting discourse analysis fused with kindness as research praxis, we conducted 66 qualitative interviews with young leaders (born between 1981 and 2001) across North America, Europe and Africa. Interviews were conducted in the summer and fall of 2020.
Findings
Our research sets out to expand theorizing related to kindness as a phenomenon, illustrates implications relevant to management and organizational studies and offers insights into the value of kindness as research praxis. This paper makes three related contributions and one methodological one: (1) it contributes to the literature on kindness and how it can be theorized in management and organizational studies, (2) it explores emerging leaders perceptions of kindness in a pandemic context, (3) it offers insights into how kindness might be leveraged as a model of moral and ethical behaviour valued in organizational environments, and (4) the paper promotes epistemic properties of kindness when fused with research praxis.
Originality/value
Authored during a rapidly unfolding scholarly conversation on the influences of the pandemic on organizational life, our research draws insights from experiences of kindness during COVID-19. This paper applies discourse analysis fused with kindness as research praxis to an understudied area of human behaviour (kindness) which has implications for management and organizational theory and practice. These implications include: (1) individual kindness capacity or inclination towards kindness behaviour that may be depleted by stressors such as the pandemic, (2) that kindness has socially contagious qualities, (3) and kindness as praxis has material benefits in the context of research methods, benefiting the research team and the research outputs.

Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippines has undergone the “new normal” transition, creating a strategic recovery effort to reinvigorate the industry. In tourism, these transitions aim to safeguard employees' and guests' health and safety, ensure continuity of business operations, boost tourism confidence leading to satisfaction, and establish a resilient and sustainable tourism industry in the postpandemic era. Hence, this chapter employs a system thinking leveraging a causal loop diagram (CLD) to construct a comprehensive roadmap for Philippine tourism's postpandemic resurgence through the system thinking lens. The CLD visually illustrates the inter-related factors influencing the recovery process, encompassing collaborative engagements, innovations, economic revitalization, and health and safety protocols. By analyzing the causal relationships among these variables, this chapter explicates the dynamic and interconnected nature of the postpandemic recovery leading to the recovery of the Philippine tourism industry, especially in the context of thinking small. Through this chapter, thinking small could involve a shift toward localized solutions and community-focused initiatives that allow them to foster local economies, build resilience, and create a more inclusive and sustainable postpandemic recovery.
