Abstract
Purpose
This case study aims to explore the transformative role of human resources (HR) in driving organizational strategy. It focuses on how HR leaders in a multi-site physical therapy company led a comprehensive redesign of roles, processes, and organizational structures to align with business objectives and adapt to dynamic market conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a human-centered design (HCD) approach, HR leaders identified misalignments through stakeholder engagement and data analysis. Combining qualitative feedback with quantitative data, the HR team developed a systematic understanding of the organization and implemented strategic changes, including role clarification and resource optimization.
Findings
The transformation led by HR resulted in significant improvements in role clarity, employee engagement, and operational scalability. Outcomes included equitable role distributions for leadership, enhanced accountability frameworks and employee skill development. These changes positioned the organization for sustainable growth and heightened HR’s role as a strategic partner.
Research limitations/implications
Future research could explore longitudinal impacts of HR-led strategic transformations on organizational performance across diverse industries.
Practical implications
Organizations can leverage the findings to empower HR as a strategic partner, aligning people strategies with business goals to achieve competitive advantage. The study underscores the importance of HR’s involvement in organizational design and capability development for future readiness.
Originality/value
This case demonstrates HR’s evolving role from administrative support to strategic business leadership. It highlights the innovative use of HCD to align workforce and organizational design with business strategy. Abstract
Purpose
In response to calls for police reform, agencies and researchers have turned their attention to alternative responses to mental health crisis calls. Jurisdictions across the United States are adopting co-responder teams that bring qualified mental or behavioral health professionals into emergency responses by the police. The current study aims to estimate the prevalence and use of these teams in the United States and to document their varieties and features.
Design/methodology/approach
We developed and administered a first-of-its-kind survey to a nationally representative sample of local and state law enforcement agencies. A total of 568 agencies completed the survey. The current analysis provides a descriptive account of the use and practices of co-responder programs and crisis intervention among the responding agencies.
Findings
We find there is wide variation in the staffing, operations, qualifications, characteristics and beliefs about the effectiveness of co-responder programs across the country. Additionally, there is a lack of consistent programmatic guidance for these programs that can inform their future development. Consequentially, agencies face personnel and funding challenges in implementing and maintaining these programs.
Originality/value
This study showcases findings from the first national survey of co-responder teams that investigates the prevalence, characteristics and operation of these teams. This information is the first step in evaluating the effectiveness of co-responder programs and, in turn, developing evidence-based guidelines and protocols for their implementation.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to synthesise the literature addressing opportunities for intervention and peacemaking in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It shows that peacebuilding in PNG is actively practised in a variety of different forms and by a range of actors. It relies heavily on local champions and coalitions working together with “bits of the state” in inventive but, ultimately, highly vulnerable ways. It argues that the way forward is to better understand how the multiple resources in and beyond the state can be networked more effectively to engineer peace at many different levels, from the clan to the nation state.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on a thorough review of the scholarly and grey literature concerning peacebuilding and conflict resolution in PNG over the past 30 years.
Findings
The key insight is that peacemaking and non-violence interventions in PNG need to be understood as requiring three different categories of treatment: quick, short interventions; ongoing, slow peacebuilding; and development of community wellness to preventatively stave off violence through increased community cohesion.
Originality/value
The paper is the basis of original research.

Abstract
Purpose
Age-inclusive management practices are crucial for addressing the needs of the older workforce, but there is limited research on these practices. One underexplored area is how workplaces can support older employees dealing with the loss of a loved one. The psychological process of loss differs for older employees and can have adverse effects on their ability to perform in the workplace. The purpose of this paper is to explore how workplaces can provide the necessary tools to support their older grieving employees.
Design/methodology/approach
This conceptual paper draws on the job-demand resource model and signaling theory to investigate how flexible work arrangements can support older employees after a bereavement and contribute to optimal employee performance.
Findings
Flexible work arrangements are theorized to lead to optimal performance via informational support. An ethical climate and stronger cultural competencies are proposed to strengthen this relationship. A theoretical framework is presented for a comprehensive research approach.
Originality/value
This paper advances the current understanding of age-inclusive management and offers a novel perspective on the benefits of flexible working arrangements.

Abstract
Purpose
Academic conferences play a crucial role in fostering scholarly exchanges and discussions among core members, thereby shaping the core performance of these events. Understanding the contributions of scholars in academic conferences is essential for advancing the goals and development of such events. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned idea.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes a comprehensive measurement method for measuring scholars' academic activeness in academic conferences. Based on the essence of academic activeness, a measurement model is constructed, comprising the breadth of academic activeness using the RFM model and the depth of academic activeness using the ATM model. Additionally, effective categories of scholars are derived from the model, facilitating the identification of valuable scholars in academic conferences.
Findings
Empirical evidence from ASIS&T conference records over the past 20 years demonstrates that the proposed measurement indicators have better coverage compared to traditional evaluation indicators, thus complementing existing scholar evaluation indictators. Furthermore, the academic activeness measurement model presented in this paper exhibits good efficacy in identifying important value and active scholars.
Originality/value
This paper pays attention to the activeness of scholars in academic conferences. It broadens the evaluation of academic conferences and scholars and supplements the evaluation indicators of academic influence.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper explores flexible working practices (FWPs) and takes a critical view that argues a need to consider not only access to digital technological resources but also the vast array of factors that constrain one’s ability to use technology for its intended benefits, as constituting the digital divide post-COVID-19 lockdown.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a critical evaluation of the extant literature, we engage in a conceptual undertaking to develop theoretical propositions that form the basis for future empirical undertakings. To theoretically ground the arguments raised, we deploy the ontological lens of actor-network theory to illuminate the socio-technical dimensions of the digital divide in light of FWPs.
Findings
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to adopt socially distanced work practices has become a reality for many organisations. We find that the adoption of FWPs, enabled by digital technologies, simultaneously signals hidden inequalities. We also develop a conceptual framework which depicts user responses in different technology environments that can either be limiting or enabling for individuals’ work productivity.
Originality/value
With regards to the digital divide, attention has often focused on access to digital technologies, as the term “digital divide” portrays. The implication is that the array of factors and resources that individuals are heterogeneously networked to, which also constitute the digital divide, is often taken for granted. We take a different ontological view that brings to the fore other factors at play within an individual’s network of relations.

Abstract
Purpose
This research examines the impact of logo changes within rebranding strategies, with a focus on the recent logo transformation of Burger King. Redesigns of logos often reflect shifts in brand strategies and consumer preferences. This study aims to evaluate the effects of logo changes on brand loyalty with the mediating role of brand attitude.
Design/methodology/approach
This study investigates the influence of Burger King’s logo change on consumer behavior, specifically regarding brand loyalty. The research involves an analysis of the appropriateness and familiarity of the old and new Burger King logos, based on data collected from 468 Egyptian consumers. Statistical analysis is conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess the impact of logo changes on consumer loyalty.
Findings
The findings indicate that a change in logo can positively affect brand loyalty, particularly when the new logo is perceived as both appropriate and familiar to consumers. Additionally, the study highlights the mediating role of brand attitude, suggesting that favorable brand perceptions enhance the relationship between logo changes and consumer loyalty.
Practical implications
The practical implications of this study highlight key strategies for brand managers involved in rebranding efforts and the associated risks of such processes. Ensuring logo appropriateness and maintaining elements of familiarity are crucial to fostering consumer acceptance and loyalty.
Originality/value
This study highlights the important role of logo change “logo appropriateness and familiarity,” offering a new perspective on how aligning logos with brand identity and retaining familiar elements can enhance consumer acceptance and loyalty with the presence of brand attitude as a mediator in this relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
This research aims at identifying segments of luxury guests based on the benefits they seek when staying at 5-star hotels. The study also wants to investigate whether ethics and sustainability have a role in differentiating the segments.
Design/methodology/approach
An online panel survey allowed the collection of 508 responses with participants from Switzerland that spent at least one night in a 5-star hotel between 2022 and 2023. The survey asked about perceived benefits, sustainable tourist behavior, preferred hotel green practices, trip-related factors and socio-demographics. Hierarchical cluster analysis was employed to group participants on the benefits identified via exploratory factor analysis. The other variables were used for segment profiling.
Findings
Results show the existence of three customer segments for 5-star hotels: the ethical enthusiast, the unconcerned aesthete and the practical connoisseur. These differ in the importance they assign to ethical, social and symbolic benefits, as well as functional service benefits. The relevance of sustainability in the luxury hotel experience is stronger for the ethical enthusiast.
Practical implications
Luxury hotel managers should highlight sustainable practices on social media to attract ethical enthusiasts. In addition, marketing content customization should be used to appeal to the benefits and profile of each identified segment.
Originality/value
This is the first study that provides a benefit segmentation of luxury hotel guests, and it is also the first research that considers the role of sustainability and ethics in differentiating these customers.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the nuances of celebrity spokesperson effectiveness in business-to-business (B2B) advertising. Specifically, the study addresses the question of endorser effectiveness in the presence of product complexity (high vs low) and how this effect is moderated by endorser gender. In addition, the study also explores whether the way an endorser is placed in the advertisement (product-facing vs audience-facing) would have differential effects on the buyer.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study uses experimental design to fulfil the study objectives. Two experiments are conducted (total n = 201) on employees in a purchasing role in organisations, with the dependent variable being dwell time (captured using an eye-tracking device).
Findings
Major findings indicate that celebrity gender has a moderating effect depending on the product complexity. Results also indicate a significant effect of how the celebrity is placed in the advertisement on the buyer.
Research limitations/implications
The findings emphasise the role of the spokesperson in B2B advertising using neuro-behavioural data. It also contributes to the theoretical nuances of spokesperson gender in B2B advertising and the role of kinesics in advertising using spokespersons.
Practical implications
The study provides guidelines on the choice of the spokesperson and their physical posture in the advertisement for B2B advertisers that may lead to communication effectiveness.
Originality/value
The present study is in a domain that is scarcely researched in B2B and adds novelty as it uses physiological data instead of self-reported measures.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on previous research, we choose nickel alloy 718 as the research material and use finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the hydrogen diffusion in lattice, grain, boundary grain and dislocation in different thermal loads, aiming to understand the intricate mechanisms underlying hydrogen diffusion in nickel-based alloys, which will contribute to driving progress in the field of hydrogen diffusion for understanding and management HE.
Design/methodology/approach
In this research, we focus on nickel alloy 718, creating a numerical model with traps to simulate the hydrogen diffusion in lattice, grain, boundary grain and dislocation with different thermal loads, by FEA.
Findings
The results demonstrated that traps improve the hydrogen saturation in materials, and because of thermal saturation and heat flux, higher temperatures decrease the hydrogen solubility and increase hydrogen diffusion velocity, which can decrease hydrogen saturation.
Originality/value
Based on our previous research and publications, we developed a finite element model to define the hydrogen trapping in different microstructural features of nickel-based superalloys. The model is very complex with a very large number of elements capable of obtaining very affordable results.
