Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to synthesize a polyacrylate-based dispersant with a determined target molecular weight for oily systems and to determine the optimal dispersant level and monomer ratio of the dispersant.
Design/methodology/approach
The dispersant was synthesized by conventional radical polymerization using methacrylic acid, butyl acrylate and dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate as the monomer. It was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic hydrogen spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis. The dispersant was used to disperse TiO2, and the performance of the dispersant was evaluated by measuring the viscosity, particle size and dispersive force of the slurry.
Findings
The dispersant exhibited high thermal stability and was successfully anchored to the surface of the TiO2 pigment. When used to disperse a TiO2 slurry, it effectively made the TiO2 slurry more fluid, indicating its strong viscosity-reducing properties. The viscosity, particle sizes and dispersion capabilities of the TiO2 slurry were found to vary depending on the contents and monomer ratios of the dispersant.
Research limitations/implications
P(MAA-BA-DM) dispersant increases the wettability of TiO2 only in oily solvents but not in aqueous solvents.
Practical implications
P(MAA-BA-DM) dispersant makes it easier to disperse TiO2 pigments in oily solvents, increasing the amount of pigment in the solvent and making the preparation of highly pigmented pastes easier.
Originality/value
A dispersant containing suitable carboxyl and tertiary amine groups was initially synthesized to disperse TiO2 in an oily system. The findings are anticipated to be used in the formulation of pigment concentrates, industrial coatings and other solvent-based coatings.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between in situ monitoring characteristics and surface defects in laser-based directed energydeposited Ti-6Al-4V.
Design/methodology/approach
In situ monitoring was conducted to extract and quantify the monitoring characteristics of each frame. A two-dimensional contour map was generated using the quantified characteristics to determine the defect formation locations. Computational thermal-fluid dynamics software was used to determine which surface tension terms or shielding gas had a significant effect on the depression of the molten pool.
Findings
This study has made a significant contribution by revealing the direct correlation between the molten pool size and brightness with defect formation in laser-based DED of Ti-6Al-4V. It was found that in regions of reduced height, the molten pool exhibited increased size and brightness, leading to surface depressions due to vapor recoil pressure flattening the molten pool. Moreover, the results highlighted that the enhanced Marangoni forces, caused by a high-temperature gradient, hindered the proper accumulation of molten metal, exacerbating height reductions. This insight provides a deeper understanding of how molten pool dynamics directly influence surface quality, which is a critical factor in DED processes.
Originality/value
This study contributes to understanding of the relationship between in situ monitoring characteristics and surface defects in laser-based directed energy-deposited Ti-6Al-4V. Additionally, by using in situ monitoring and computational analysis, significant insights were gained into the factors influencing molten pool behavior and subsequent surface defects.

Abstract
Purpose
The Soybean Producer Subsidy Policy (SPSP), an agricultural support policy enacted in China within the past few years, is designed to optimise crop planting structure. This study analyses the impact of SPSP on the crop planting structure in terms of absolute and comparative incomes and elucidates the mechanisms involved.
Design/methodology/approach
Utilising balanced county-level panel data from 966 counties in China’s major soybean-producing regions, spanning from 2008 to 2021, we investigate the impacts of SPSP on crop planting structure by applying a difference-in-difference (DID) model.
Findings
The findings reveal several crucial insights. First, SPSP optimises the crop planting structure in Northeast China, primarily through an expansion in the area sown to soybeans and a simultaneous reduction in the area sown to maize. Second, the impacts of SPSP gradually strengthen over time but begin to weaken by 2021. Third, heterogeneity analysis indicates that the effects of SPSP are most pronounced in Eastern Inner Mongolia, followed by Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. Finally, SPSP incentivises farmers to expand soybean sown areas by improving absolute rather than comparative incomes from soybean cultivation.
Practical implications
Addressing structural contradictions within China’s food supply chain necessitates the adjustment of support policies for different crops to mitigate market distortions. Establishing a holistic agricultural support system encompassing various crops could promote sustainable agricultural practices in the future.
Originality/value
Our findings are valuable for policy makers in China and globally who aim to establish support systems for regional linkages that include a variety of crops.

Financial technology (FinTech) has enhanced the inclusivity and accessibility of traditional finance, offering a novel pathway for rural revitalization and development. The paper aims to assess the rural revitalization development level in prefecture-level cities in China and investigate the potential impact mechanism of FinTech.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper develops an index system to evaluate the rural revitalization level across 279 cities in China from 2011 to 2021. In addition, multi-mediation and threshold models are employed to analyze how FinTech influences rural revitalization.
Findings
The results reveal that, first, FinTech has significantly promoted rural revitalization. Second, entrepreneurial activeness, innovation capability, and industrial structure advancement are intermediary factors within the benchmark path. Third, FinTech exhibits varied threshold effects in entrepreneurial activeness, innovation capability, and industrial structure advancement, influencing rural revitalization with diverse impacts.
Originality/value
First, this paper expands the rural revitalization evaluation to include 30 indexes, enhancing overall measurement comprehensiveness. Second, in contrast to previous research concentrating on provincial-level assessments, this paper explores rural revitalization across 279 cities in China from 2011 to 2021, broadening the study’s scope and timeline. Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes a B&B ranking method based on improved intuitionistic fuzzy sets. First, text mining and cluster analysis are combined to identify the concerns of consumers and construct an attribute set. Second, an attribute-level-based text sentiment analysis is established. The authors propose an improved intuitionistic fuzzy set, which is more in line with the actual situation of sentiment analysis of online reviews. Next, subjective-objective combinatorial assignments are applied, considering the consumers’ preferences. Finally, the vlsekriterijumska optimizacija i kompromisno resenje (VIKOR) algorithm, based on the improved score function, is advised to evaluate B&Bs.
Findings
A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the proposed method. Comparative analysis with other multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) methods proves the effectiveness and superiority of the VIKOR algorithm based on the improved intuitionistic fuzzy sets proposed in this paper.
Originality/value
Proposing a B&B recommendation method that takes into account review timeliness and user customization is the innovation of this paper. In this approach, the authors propose improved intuitionistic fuzzy sets. Compared with the traditional intuitionistic fuzzy set, the improved intuitionistic fuzzy set increases the abstention membership, which is more in line with the actual situation of attribute-level sentiment analysis of online reviews.

The study explores the sustainability of biodegradable materials as an eco-friendly substitute for traditional plastics across diverse applications. These materials decompose harmlessly within a specific timeframe, contributing to a holistic lifecycle. Yet, their widespread adoption depends on convincing consumers, manufacturers and regulators of their effectiveness. An empirical study was undertaken to investigate the determinants impacting the sustainability of biodegradable plastics.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employed a quantitative approach, seeking to discern the factors shaping the endurance of these materials in Malaysia. The study encompassed 316 viable responses, with outcomes from the PLS-SEM analysis offering partial support to the research framework.
Findings
The study reveals that individual characteristics strongly influence the sustainability of biodegradable plastics and are essential factors in determining behavioural intentions related to sustainability, such as purchasing environmentally friendly packaged food products.
Practical implications
The study provides practical implications for government and corporate sectors to design effective strategies encouraging consumers to choose biodegradable plastics. Regular awareness campaigns should be conducted to increase consumer engagement in environmental concerns and reduce the use of non-eco-friendly packaging in the public sector.
Originality/value
Previous literature has overlooked the sustainability aspects of the biodegradable plastics market, leaving a gap in understanding the influential factors and their sustainability, especially in the Malaysian context. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the determinants that govern the sustainability of biodegradable plastics.

The study aims to make a comparative assessment of the degree of market power for listed commercial banks operating in India and Bangladesh and identify various bank-specific market structures and macroeconomic determinants of market power.
Design/methodology/approach
The study relied on secondary data from 2011 to 2022 to assess the market power of 48 listed commercial banks in India and Bangladesh, employing the adjusted Lerner index (ALI) and the generalized method of moments (GMM) regression technique to explore the factors influencing market power.
Findings
The findings demonstrate that Indian banks possess more market power than their counterparts in Bangladesh and bank capitalization, diversification, operational inefficiency (OI) and gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate are crucial determinants of market power for both economies.
Research limitations/implications
The result provides significant takeaways for the respective country regulators and banks. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should implement measures to reduce market power. In contrast, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) should carefully monitor the increasing trend of competition and look into possibilities of bank consolidation without hampering the competitive agenda. Further, banks in both economies need to focus on operational cost-cutting.
Originality/value
This study is among the first to compare market power and its determinants for listed commercial banks of India and Bangladesh. It has also incorporated a new variable, technology, alongside other established determinants.

Purpose
The phenomenon of friction and wear in parallel groove clamps under wind vibration in 10 kV distribution networks represents a significant challenge that can lead to their failure. This study aims to elucidate the wear mechanism of parallel groove clamps under wind-induced vibration through simulation and experimentation.
Design/methodology/approach
FLUENT software was used to simulate the flow around the conductor and the parallel groove fixture, and the Karman vortex street phenomenon was discussed. The stress fluctuations of each component under breeze vibration conditions were investigated using ANSYS, and fretting experimentations were conducted at varying amplitudes.
Findings
The results demonstrate that the impact of breeze vibration on the internal stress of the parallel groove clamps is considerable. The maximum stress observed on the lower clamping block was found to be up to 300 MPa. As wind speed increased, the maximum vibration frequency was observed to reach 72.6 Hz. Concurrently, as the vibration amplitude increased, the damage in the contact zone of the lower clamping block also increased, with the maximum contact resistance reaching 78.0 µO at a vibration amplitude of 1.2 mm. This was accompanied by a shift in the wear mechanism from adhesive wear to oxidative wear and fatigue wear.
Originality/value
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the fretting wear phenomenon associated with parallel groove clamps under wind vibration. The findings provide a reference basis for the design and protection of parallel groove clamps.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper studies the determinants of the debt maturity of Mexican-listed companies by analysing the effects on the extensive (issuing or liquidating debt) and the intensive (debt maturity renegotiation) margins.
Design/methodology/approach
This study, using a Tobit model for panel data and measuring maturity as a time variable, shows that size, liquidity and leverage, among other firm characteristics, as well as the market interest rate, explain debt maturity. Additionally, the study employs the McDonald and Moffitt decomposition to determine whether the explanatory variables of maturity have a more significant effect on the decision to issue or liquidate debt or on debt maturity renegotiations.
Findings
The results obtained highlight that the market interest rate negatively affects debt maturity. On the other hand, variables like size, liquidity, collateral and leverage demonstrate a positive relationship with the dependent variable. In addition, the extensive margin has a higher impact on corporate debt than the intensive margin, suggesting that firms prefer to liquidate or issue new debt rather than renegotiate preexisting contracts.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of this study is the use of an unbalanced panel. The lack of data limits the application of specific methodologies suggested by the literature as a way to test the robustness of the estimates.
Originality/value
First of all, this study adds empirical evidence of debt maturity decisions by publicly traded firms in a middle-income country such as Mexico to the existing literature on maturity choice. Second, the study treats debt maturity as a time-censored, limited variable. Finally, the authors have used the McDonald and Moffitt (1980) methodology to decompose the effect of each independent variable into extensive and intensive margins.

Over the past three decades, financial deregulation and various reforms have significantly transformed the competitive environment for banks in Indonesia. These changes have introduced new challenges for banks to retain their market power and ensure their survival. In light of this, the article aims to assess the current levels of market power held by Indonesian banks and explore the factors that influence it.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper measured the degree of market power and identified its impacting factors for 22 listed commercial banks using the Adjusted Lerner Index (ALI) and appropriate regression technique over a period of 2011–2023.
Findings
The empirical findings reveal that banks in Indonesia enjoy high market power, and factors such as capitalization, diversification, operational inefficiency, asset quality and GDP growth rate significantly impact banks’ market power. Additionally, the findings contradict the structure-conduct-performance paradigm, which advocates that a concentrated banking system impairs competition.
Research limitations/implications
The study suggests that regulatory authorities should closely monitor the market power levels and promote strategies to enhance competition within the banking sector. Additionally, banks should prioritize implementing measures to reduce operational costs and improve the quality of assets.
Originality/value
This research represents one of the early attempts to gauge the market power of publicly listed conventional commercial banks in Indonesia by employing the Adjusted Lerner Index. Additionally, it introduces “technology adoption” as a novel variable to the analysis alongside other established variables.
