Abstract

Martial arts and combat sports (MACS) are supported on ritualistic practices which often encompass hazing creating environments where catastrophic masculinities prevail. These forms of masculinities are strengthened inside MACS’ world resonating with masculinities spread out in wider society. We consider this to be the situation found in Brazilian society. With this study, our aim is to analyse how hazing practices in MACS contribute to the production of a socially legitimised catastrophic masculinity in Brazil. Catastrophic masculinity appears as a new concept proposed by Andrade (2022) to define a hegemonic, toxic and tragic form of masculinity spread in Brazil attached to a political power project. We carried out two qualitative empirical pieces of research that focused on three martial arts. These were ethnographic (participant-) observations of various events, training sessions, belt examination and competition and interviews with men participants. Supported by the presented data, we argue that hazing practices end up acting as a means of reproducing the catastrophic masculinity fighters perform in the dojo. They learn and resonate with a pedagogy that requires them to conform to and follow hierarchies through the repetition of the word ‘oss’ as a symbol of submission to arbitrariness. Hazing constitutes, instantiates and reproduces catastrophic masculinity and originates in the same (social) catastrophic masculinity.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the tensile strength and compressive behaviour of two thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) filaments produced via material extrusion (ME): TPU 95A and Reciflex (recycled).

Design/methodology/approach

Tensile strength and compressive behaviour are assessed. The influence of extrusion temperature and infill pattern on these properties is examined, supported by thermal characterization, surface morphology analyses and a comprehensive comparison with existing literature. An analytical method is presented for estimating the solid ratio of ME parts, using an ellipse model to describe the material bead geometry.

Findings

Reciflex is generally stiffer than TPU 95A in both tensile and compressive tests. Specimens loaded orthogonally in compression tests exhibited stiffer behaviour than those loaded parallelly, and higher tensile properties were typically observed when material beads were deposited parallel to the load direction. Unlike TPU 95A, Reciflex is sensitive to extrusion temperature variations.

Social implications

By comparing recycled and virgin TPU filaments, this research addresses waste management concerns and advocates for environmentally sustainable production practices in the broadly used filament/based ME technique.

Originality/value

This study provides an extensive comparison of computed values with existing literature, offering insights into how different materials may behave under similar processing conditions. Given ongoing challenges in controlling melt flow during extrusion, these results may offer insights for optimizing the production of ME parts made with thermoplastic elastomers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an organizing lens for viewing the distinct contributions to knowledge production from those research communities addressing the impact of competitive strategy on company performance in general, and the influence of cost leadership and differentiation strategy on organizational performance in detail.

Design/methodology/approach

The research methodology was based on the PRISMA review, and thematic analysis based on an iterative process of open coding was analyzed and then the sample was analyzed by illustrating the research title, objectives, method, data analysis, sample size, variables and country.

Findings

The main factor that influenced the competitive strategy is strategic growth; strategic growth has a significant influence on competitive strategy. Furthermore, competitive strategy will boost firm network, performance measurement and organization behavior. In the same way, the internal goal factor will enhance organizational effectiveness. Also, a differentiation strategy will support management practice factors, strategic positions, product price, product characteristics and company performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by identifying a framework of competitive strategy factors, company performance factors, cost leadership strategy factors, differentiation strategy factors and competitive strategy with global market factors. This study provides a complete picture and description of the resulting body knowledge in competitive strategy and organizational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review paper is to provide a review of the most recent advances in the field of manufacturing composite sandwich panels along with their advantages and limitations. The other purpose of this paper is to familiarize the researchers with the available developments in manufacturing sandwich structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The most recent research articles in the field of manufacturing various composite sandwich structures were reviewed. The review process started by categorizing the available sandwich manufacturing techniques into nine main categories according to the method of production and the equipment used. The review is followed by outlining some automatic production concepts toward composite sandwich automated manufacturing. A brief summary of the sandwich manufacturing techniques is given at the end of this article, with recommendations for future work.

Findings

It has been found that several composite sandwich manufacturing techniques were proposed in the literature. The diversity of the manufacturing techniques arises from the variety of the materials as well as the configurations of the final product. Additive manufacturing techniques represent the most recent trend in composite sandwich manufacturing.

Originality/value

This work is valuable for all researchers in the field of composite sandwich structures to keep up with the most recent advancements in this field. Furthermore, this review paper can be considered as a guideline for researchers who are intended to perform further research on composite sandwich structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the paper is to process clients’ online reviews of 20 spa locations in the Slovak Republic in the form of a case study. The purpose is to identify and specify the shortcomings of Slovak spa resorts as well as the needs and preferences of their clientele.

Design/methodology/approach

To obtain data, Google text reviews were scraped using the Instant Data Scraper. The text mining approach was used for the analysis of 5,670 reviews (using the RapidMiner Studio and Atlas.ti tools).

Findings

The performed sentiment analysis of the reviews has determined that 4,807 of the reviews were positive, 476 were neutral and 387 were of negative sentiment. The subsequently processed word list states the most frequently mentioned nouns and adjectives. Detailed opinion mining identifies the areas/phrases with the most frequent occurrence of the negative sentiment in their reviews.

Originality/value

The stated results are important from the perspective of service quality management in order to improve the satisfaction of spa customers. Sentiment analysis of Google Maps reviews for the target clientele remains unexplored and represents a novel area of study.

Abstract

In a world that is more competitive on a global scale, technologically advanced and demanding than ever before, global situations such as climate change, poverty and inequality, health, migration or security are challenging for decision-makers in political, social or environmental contexts. The interplay of these and other tendencies is referred to as wicked problems, as their increasing complexity can often not be understood or distinguished anymore. Too many different crises, such as climate, economic, political or societal crises, are challenging the vulnerability and resilience of political, economic and community-based systems. Accordingly, focussing on battling single challenges without considering the bigger picture or interconnected processes or circumstances has not led to satisfactory results throughout the past decades. In a tourism industry that is traditionally closely interlinked with numerous sectors or stakeholder groups and therefore often associated with these problems, those in responsibility are particularly required to consider various interests and utilise the synergy potentials between the tourism and non-tourism sector. Accordingly, integrative tourism policy-making needs to include many political areas that are relevant within tourism as well as beyond, such as urban or regional development. As a holistic spatial development approach, the ‘ecosystem of hospitality’ (EoH) can facilitate the identification of interfaces between tourism and these political areas and help to foster a cross-stakeholder collaboration.

Abstract

Purpose

This research centres on how digital technologies are revolutionizing agriculture, affording farmers improved access to information, crop forecasts, markets and innovations, in addition to facilitating training and other benefits. The purpose of this investigation is to examine how technologies used in the Agro 4.0 industry facilitate agricultural and livestock practices.

Design/methodology/approach

A thorough examination of the existing literature on this subject was conducted, encompassing articles published between 2013 and 2023 that have been catalogued in Scopus and the Web of Science.

Findings

The analysis of these studies reveals the growing significance of innovations such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, precision agriculture, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics in the transformation of agriculture and livestock farming. The implementation of these technologies is occurring across various sectors of agricultural production, including livestock production, shrimp farming, vertical farming, supply chains, irrigation, grain inspection, the dairy sector and smart farms. The impacts identified include improvements in productivity, intelligent analysis systems, operational efficiency, transparency and reliability, management per square metre, optimization, environmental sustainability, animal welfare, enhancement of food security and risk reduction.

Originality/value

Therefore, the contributions of technologies are associated with data-based decision-making, digital skills to maximize agribusiness performance, digital transformation in the field and competitiveness in the global market.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the challenges faced by taxpayers in adopting electronic invoicing for value-added tax (VAT) collection and develop a framework for addressing these challenges based on their interrelationships within a developing country.

Design/methodology/approach

To establish a practical framework, a comprehensive literature review was conducted. The extracted factors were then presented to a panel of experts for validation or modification. Subsequently, this study employed a multi-criteria model based on DEMATEL and interval neutrosophic value set (INVS) to assist decision-makers in evaluating taxpayer challenges and identifying their interdependencies. This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining library research, expert interviews/consultations (qualitative) and a survey (quantitative).

Findings

The study suggests that taxpayer challenges can be categorized into six primary factors: distrust and security concerns, technical challenges, cost considerations, regulatory compliance challenges, cultural/demographic factors and lack of awareness. Key findings reveal that lack of awareness (X6) and cultural/demographic factors (X5) emerged as the most critical factors in terms of both importance and influence on other factors.

Practical implications

This study offers a more realistic understanding of cause-and-effect relationships, ultimately leading to more informed decision-making regarding e-invoicing adoption. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, guiding them towards effective practical implications.

Originality/value

This study differentiates itself from previous research by not only prioritizing factors influencing taxpayer e-invoicing adoption but also by examining the causal relationships between these factors. Unlike prior studies, this research has delved into the interdependencies among the prerequisite variables of e-invoicing adoption for VAT in a developing country. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, no existing research has employed neutrosophic DEMATEL to address the uncertainty inherent in identifying the interrelationships among factors affecting e-invoicing adoption by taxpayers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the combined impact of pharmaceutical marketing strategies, specifically free drug samples and interactions with medical representatives, on physicians’ attitudes and prescribing behavior in Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this objective, data were collected from a sample comprising 425 physicians. A six-point forced-choice Likert scale was used for data collection, and cluster sampling techniques were used in the study design.

Findings

The study reveals significant insights into pharmaceutical marketing’s influence on physician behavior. Free drug samples exert a positive influence on both physician attitudes and prescribing behavior. Physicians’ attitudes, in turn, significantly affect their prescribing decisions. Mediation analysis demonstrates that free drug samples indirectly influence prescribing behavior through shifts in physician attitudes. Effective medical representatives amplify this influence, as stronger associations between free drug samples and physician attitudes are observed when representatives are more effective.

Originality/value

This research contributes by unraveling the intricate dynamics between marketing strategies, physician attitudes and prescribing behavior in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It underscores the importance of ethical pharmaceutical marketing practices, highlighting the substantial role of free drug samples and the crucial function of effective medical representatives in shaping physician behavior. Ultimately, this study sheds light on how responsible pharmaceutical marketing and adept medical representatives can improve health-care outcomes in the region.
