Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effect of CEO compensation risk, as measured by the proportion of equity-based pay (option and stock awards) relative to total compensation and pay sensitivity to stock volatility, on CEO pay for luck asymmetry. This paper also empirically examines CEO compensation risk as a mediating variable between the regulatory changes and CEO pay for luck asymmetry.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper test the proposed two hypothesis that CEO compensation risk is positively associated with the degree of CEO pay for luck asymmetry; and the pay related regulations implemented around 2006 could mitigate the degree of CEO pay for luck asymmetry using the fixed-effects regression models.

Findings

Consistent with the managerial talent retention hypothesis, this paper finds that CEO compensation risk, as measured by the equity-based pay as a proportion of CEO total compensation and CEO pay sensitivity to stock volatility, is positively associated with the degree of CEO pay for luck asymmetry. In addition, this paper find that CEO pay for luck asymmetry is significantly reduced by the major regulatory changes on executive compensation implemented around 2006.

Research limitations/implications

This study is among the very few studies exploring the impact of CEO compensation risk on pay for luck asymmetry in the literature. While the major purpose of the widely used stock options is to align executive interests and shareholder values, it also tends to increase the risk level of CEO compensation. So, a well-designed CEO pay package should protect risk-averse CEOs from bad luck for the retention purpose, which is also beneficial to shareholder wealth maximization. Therefore, future research on executive compensation needs to examine the issue from various perspectives.

Practical implications

For board of directors who is responsible for the compensation of CEOs, it is necessary to consider a broad range of factors when designing an optimal CEO pay package.

Social implications

The findings on the impact of regulations on CEO pay for luck asymmetry suggest that the executive-pay-related regulations around 2006 have indeed achieved some of their intended goals to significantly lower pay for nonperformance asymmetry, whereby CEO pay sensitivity to stock volatility has been identified as a major mediating variable.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on executive pay for luck asymmetry in several perspectives. First, this paper finds that CEO compensation risk has a positive impact on the degree of CEO pay for luck asymmetry. Second, this paper finds that the CEO pay for luck asymmetry has been mitigated after 2006 when various regulatory changes on executive compensation began to be implemented in the USA. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the very few studies investigating these issues in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to optimize the preparation conditions and modify the nanofiltration (NF) membranes to prepare high-performance polysulfone/sulfonated polysulfone composite nanofiltration (PSF/SPSF-NF) membranes through interfacial polymerization.

Design/methodology/approach

Investigating the impacts of anhydrous piperazine (PIP) concentration, trimesoyl chloride (TMC) concentration and basement membrane type on NF membrane performance, the optimal membrane was prepared. In addition, nano-SiO2 was added to the active separation layer to modify the NF membranes.

Findings

The comprehensive performance of PSF/SPSF-NF membranes was optimized when the concentration of PIP was 0.75 Wt.% and the concentration of TMC was 0.15 Wt.%, at which time the water flux was 66.1 L·m−2·h−1 and the retention rate of Na2SO4 was 98.1%. The comprehensive performance of polysulfone/sulfonated polysulfone-SiO2 nanofiltration (PSF/SPSF-SiO2-NF) membranes was optimized when the blending ratio of nano-SiO2 to PIP was 2:3, with a pure water flux of 81.9 L·m−2·h−1 and a Na2SO4 retention rate of 95.9%. Compared to polysulfone nanofiltration (PSF-NF) membranes and PSF/SPSF-NF membranes, NF membranes with nano-SiO2 increased the flux recovery rate by 22.9% and 8.7%.

Practical implications

PSF/SPSF-SiO2-NF membrane exhibits excellent antifouling properties.

Originality/value

There is currently no literature available on the preparation of NF membranes using polysulfone/sulfonated polysulfone (PSF/SPFS) as a substrate. This provides a method for modifying NF membranes, starting with the modification of the basement membrane and then modifying the active separation layer.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper considers an e-tailer planning to distribute a product under one direct sales channel and multiple asymmetric agency platforms. Based on the multinomial logit (MNL) choice model, this study optimizes the pricing strategy and channel selection strategy to maximize the e-tailer’s profit.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage channel selection and pricing problem is formulated, where the profit-maximizing e-tailer first optimally selects a specified number of agency platforms from a set of alternatives to distribute the product and then determines the optimal prices in those channels.

Findings

An optimal pricing strategy is proposed to maximize the e-tailer’s total profit on multiple asymmetric channels. The results show that the e-tailer can obtain a higher profit by selling products on more asymmetric agency platforms. Moreover, an effective channel selection algorithm is provided to help the e-tailer optimally select the M agency platforms from N alternatives.

Originality/value

This study enriches the relevant research on multichannel selection and pricing by proposing an optimal pricing strategy and an effective channel selection algorithm. Evaluation results based on real-world industrial data show that the proposed optimal multichannel pricing strategy in this paper can significantly improve the profit of a real-world e-tailer compared to the e-tailer’s actual profit.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve the permeability and antifouling of polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes, the PSF matrix was modified by incorporating sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF).

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic investigations were conducted on the synergistic effects of a pore-forming agent, coagulation bath temperature and SPSF doping in the casting solution on blended ultrafiltration membranes. The chemical composition of the membranes was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology and surface roughness of the membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The hydrophilicity of the membrane surface was analyzed using a contact angle meter. The permeability and antifouling properties of the blended membranes were also investigated through filtration experiments.

Findings

The results indicated that the blended ultrafiltration membranes demonstrated an optimal overall performance when PVP-K30 content was 5.0 Wt.%, coagulation bath temperature was 30°C and SPSF content was 2.4 Wt.%. In comparison to a pure PSF ultrafiltration membrane, there was a significant increase in pure water flux (390.7 L·m−2·h−1) by 2.2 times, while bovine serum albumin retention slightly decreased to 93.8%. In addition, the flux recovery rate improved by 2.1 times (71.4%) compared to that of the original PSF ultrafiltration membrane.

Practical implications

The method provided a simple and practical solution for improving the antifouling and permeability of PSF ultrafiltration membranes.

Originality/value

SPSF was anticipated to serve as an excellent modification additive for the preparation of ultrafiltration membranes with superior properties.

Abstract

Purpose

The development of circular construction supply chains (CCSCs) is impeded by various barriers, but the current literature overlooks the interrelationships among these barriers and the varying nature of associated countermeasures with the growth of circular economy (CE). This paper aims to develop new perspectives about the transition to CCSCs through the lens of supply-push (SP)/demand-pull (DP) strategies and related underpinning theories.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review including 136 journal articles was undertaken to identify barriers to CCSCs and associated countermeasures that are analysed for their relevance to SP/DP. The interplay between SP/DP approaches was discussed using the “technology acceptance” and “innovation chain” models.

Findings

(1) Thirty-five barriers were identified and organised into nine main barrier factors; (2) the predominant factors are knowledge and awareness, policy and regulations, technological capabilities, and incentives; (3) CCSCs transition is SP-configured primarily driven by actors above the project network; (4) “push” measures are devised to gradually create a “pull” environment and can be revoked when demand for circularity is created, suggesting a new “push-to-pull” perspective of CCSCs; and (5) a complex adaptative system is witnessed in relationships between barriers and countermeasures, and interactions among actors at all levels.

Practical implications

The findings offer practitioners countermeasures to barriers encountered in CE initiatives. It also informs policymakers of adjusting policies to accommodate the SP-DP movement in steering the circular transition.

Originality/value

This study uses theoretical models to interpret the dynamics in CCSCs transition and proposes a new definition of CCSCs highlighting their complex and dual transitional/transformational nature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different bullet screen types (functional vs social) on the continuous watching intention of consumers, as well as the influence mechanism. In addition, this study analyses the moderating role of consumer motivational orientation on the above effects.

Design/methodology/approach

First, objective data were obtained through the crawler to test the proposed hypotheses. An objective data analysis (417 group sample) was conducted to analyse the relationship between the percentage of social bullet screens and consumers sustained growth ratio to indirectly test the primary effect. Second, a questionnaire survey was conducted to test (176 questionnaires) the mediating role of perceived social crowding. Finally, a simulated online contextual experiment (340 participants) is conducted to explore the moderating role of consumer motivational orientation.

Findings

First, functional bullet screens produce higher continuous watching intention and lower perceived social crowding than social bullet screens. Second, perceived social crowding mediates the relationship between bullet screen type and continuous watching intention. Third, consumers' motivational orientation type (task-motivated vs recreation-motivated) moderates the relationship among bullet screen type, perceived social crowding and continuous watching intention.

Originality/value

The results of this study shed light on the differential impact of different types of bullet screens (functional and social) on consumers' continuous watching intentions, which makes up for the lack of research on the content of bullet screens in the field of livestreaming. Meanwhile, compared with the previous positive psychological research perspective, this study explores the intermediate mechanism of bullet screen type on consumers' continuous watching intention through a negative psychological perspective, which helps e-commerce companies and streamers better understand the differential impact of different bullet screens. Finally, this study explores the joint influence effect of bullet screen and consumer motivation type, which fills the theoretical research gap of consumer motivation orientation type in the category of live-streaming.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using the components series connection (CSC) method to predict the performance of a newly developed micro turbine engine (MTE) under rated operating condition.

Design/methodology/approach

The main research object is the MTE with known factory performance parameters, and the finite element method is used to discretize its main components into a full-cycle grid and then simulate it in the computational fluid dynamics method under rated operating condition using the CSC method. Finally, compare the results obtained by numerical simulations with the factory design parameters of the MTE.

Findings

The performance and flow field of MTE and each component were simulated and obtained. Compared with the factory design parameters, the errors are acceptable, with the outlet average total temperature and thrust exhibiting errors of 1.4% and 7.6%, respectively.

Practical implications

This paper introduces a faster and more convenient method for simulating the performance of MTE components and the entire engine while also making the simulations more realistic. The method was used to analyze the performance of the components and the whole engine of a newly developed MTE.

Originality/value

This research validates the feasibility of evaluating the overall performance of the MTE using the CSC method and provides a new method to solve performance calculations for MTE under any known working conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to investigate how to create a new premium new energy vehicle brand.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a two-stage design. Firstly, a single-case study of NIO was undertaken to execute a thematic analysis, from which propositions were proposed and a theoretical model was constructed. Subsequently, quantitative data were collected through the questionnaire method to empirically test the model developed in the first stage.

Findings

NIO creates great user experience through four aspects: product, service, digital touchpoints and lifestyle. Functional experience is shaped by product and digital touchpoints, while emotional experience is affected by service and lifestyle. NIO wins extremely high user satisfaction through great user experience. User satisfaction is affected by both functional and emotional experience. Taking extremely satisfied users as the core, NIO leverages word-of-mouth recommendations to increase brand awareness and build premium brand image, so as to achieve high performance in the long term.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by proposing and testing a theoretical model of creating a new premium new energy vehicle brand. It highlights the significance of emotional factors in the process of creating a new premium brand. It proposes employing the “ripple model” to translate user satisfaction into financial performance. It provides a three-step guide to creating a new premium brand for managers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the influence of experiential value, authentic happiness and experiential satisfaction on the behavioral intention of luxury fashion.

Design/methodology/approach

Two hundred online questionnaires were collected from customers who rented or bought wedding dresses between 2015 and 2020, with at least one rental or purchase coming from an Indonesian bridal wedding brand that promotes the idea of marriage under Islamic law. The quantitative methodology used in this study was examined using the Structural Equation Model analysis method with the AMOS 22 software.

Findings

The results showed that all hypotheses were accepted with significant positive influences, including experiential value in halal fashion on authentic happiness, experiential satisfaction and luxury fashion behavioral intention, authentic happiness in luxury fashion behavioral intention and experiential satisfaction, as well as experiential satisfaction in the behavioral intention of luxury fashion.

Research limitations/implications

The data were collected from respondents who have rented and/or purchased wedding dresses. However, the number of respondents who only rent or who only buy was not identified.

Practical implications

The value of experience in halal fashion needs to be increased. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that marketers can create effective marketing policies and strategies by paying attention to the value of the consumer’s halal fashion experience because it will affect their authentic happiness, experience satisfaction and luxury fashion behavior intention.

Originality/value

This study has unique originality in measuring the variable of luxury fashion behavioral intention, which was adjusted to the object of research, namely luxury fashion.

Abstract

Purpose

The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry has underscored the growing significance of online movies. However, there is limited research available on the factors that influence the viewership of online films. Therefore, this study aims to use the signaling theory to investigate how signals of varying qualities affect online movie viewership, considering both signal transmission costs and prices.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample of 1,071 online movies released on the iQiyi from July 2020 to July 2022. It uses OLS regression and instrumental variable method to examine the impact of various quality indicators on the viewership of online movies, as well as the moderating effect of price.

Findings

After conducting a thorough analysis of this study, it can be deduced that the varying impacts on online movie viewership are attributed to disparities in signal transmission costs. Specifically, star influence and rating exhibit a positive effect on the viewership of online movies, whereas the number of raters has a detrimental impact. Furthermore, there exists an “inverted U-shaped” relationship between the number of reviews and online movie viewership. Additionally, within the consumer decision-making process, both price-cost and price-quality relationships coexist. This is evident as prices negatively affect online movie viewership but positively moderate the relationship between rating, number of reviews and online movie viewership.

Originality/value

The research findings of this study offer valuable insights for online film producers to effectively leverage quality signals and pricing, thereby capturing market attention and enhancing film profitability.
