Abstract

Introduction: The idea of sustainability has become increasingly popular across many industries. To meet the demands of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their requirements, sustainable organisations prioritise integrating environmental, social, and economic aspects into their operations.

Purpose: To analyse the inter-relationship between sustainable organisations, high-potential employees (HPEs), and blended learning (BL) effectiveness. Organisations can gain a competitive edge, spur innovation, and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive future by incorporating sustainability into their operations and offering sustainable workspaces.

Design/methodology/approach: This research approach offers a thorough understanding of the connections between sustainable organisations, HPEs, and workspaces by combining a literature review of 77 research papers, case studies, and surveys.

Findings: The dedication to sustainability draws high-potential workers and environmentally aware customers who favour supporting socially conscientious businesses.

Practical implications: The study provides valuable implications and suggestions for businesses looking to improve their sustainability and recruit top talent. These proposals should include the techniques for integrating sustainability into organisational culture, employee engagement programmes, talent recruiting and retention tactics, and designing environmentally friendly workspaces.

Originality/value: This research approach offers a thorough understanding of the connections between sustainable organisations, HPEs, and workspaces by combining literature reviews, case studies, surveys, interviews, and data analysis.

Abstract

As the today's world is leading toward the digital dependency and after the world pandemic of COVID-19, the dependency of students and the university is completely through a digital medium, in context with that the higher education according to the demand of the generation is leading towards digital transformation. The digital transformation in the sector of education is the road map for the sustainable management and development of education. The digital transformation is the new pillar of education in which the students are mostly reliable. The digitalization in the field of education will lead to simple and clarified as well as multiple way for acquiring the knowledge. As the integration of the new model of education system is applied and implemented throughout the globe, the digital medium plays a significant role for the smooth and the systemic development of the model. In this chapter, the pathway for the development of the well-stable and well-developed strategies is considered in which the integration of the essential requirements, proper guidance, and advantages of the model is dependent for the transformation to digital medium of the higher education that will be leading to the development of the management and the education system. Abstract

Purpose

The current study examined several aspects of validity evidence for the Faculty Readiness to Teaching Online (FRTO) scale.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 307 faculty in higher education. Construct validity was evidenced through an exploratory factor analysis and a reliability coefficient. Differential validity was explored using the differential item functioning analysis to explore potential bias in items due to gender and age. In addition, convergent validity was tested by correlating FRTO with years of teaching online, the primary modality of instruction and whether there is required training in online teaching by the institution.

Findings

The findings from validation showed that new factors emerged and also demonstrated differences based on instructors gender and age, as well as based on teaching experience and primary modality of teaching.

Originality/value

The findings confirmed the previous study's results (Martin et al., 2019) and provided some modifications to the instrument. The factor structure did not conform to the original four factors proposed in the instrument; instead, the newly loaded factors were course design and facilitation, course technologies, course expectations and resources and time management. The revised instrument can be presented and discussed at online teaching professional development programs to help faculty understand the core competencies they need to better instruct students.

Abstract

Purpose

Micro and small enterprises (MSE) play a critical role in the Swiss economy but had no meaningfully adopted working from home (WFH) policy before the COVID-19 crisis. The timing of the study’s data collection allowed a unique assessment of Swiss MSEs’ adoption of WFH enabled by the adoption of digital technologies due to the first government-mandated COVID-19 lockdown. The study also set out to assess the permanence of any changes in the adoption of WFH by MSEs after initial government COVID-19 restrictions ended.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a threefold theoretical framework combining social, technical and spatial dimensions. Data were collected via telephone interviews. The utilised sampling frame included 153,000 small businesses with 4–49 employees, and the realised sample for the study was 503 interviews with MSE owners and managing directors (MDs).

Findings

The Swiss government’s COVID-19 crisis lockdown policies accelerated the digital transformation of work by employees in Swiss MSEs by increasing the number of employees WFH. However, the number of MSEs with WFH employees decreased after the first lockdown ended. Small business leadership is an important influence on the persistence of any increases in WFH.

Originality/value

The data collection uniquely captures the effects of externally driven digital transformation of work in small businesses by the adoption of WFH. The findings show that small businesses can rapidly learn new ways of working and support the claim that Swiss MSE MDs play a critical role in the adoption of WFH. They also confirm the importance of digital leadership and culture for realising the potential of WFH in small businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to advances in both software and hardware, obsolescence risk refers to the fear that a product will soon become obsolete, which can be very high for technological products such as smartwatches or smartphones. Drawing on the perceived risk theory and innovation resistance, this study examines the effects of different obsolescence risks on consumer resistance to smartwatches.

Design/methodology/approach

A sequential explanatory approach using a mixed method was adopted in this study. In Study 1, we conducted semi-structured and in-depth face-to-face interviews with 16 individuals to identify the most important obsolescence risks affecting consumers’ resistance to smartwatches. This qualitative study develops a novel theoretical model based on interpretive results, including technological, economic, functional, and aesthetic obsolescence risks. In Study 2, we tested our theoretical model by applying partial least-squares structural equation modeling to a sample of 298 smartwatch users.

Findings

The results show that consumer resistance to smartwatches is affected by technological, economic, functional, and aesthetic obsolescence risks.

Originality/value

Although most extant studies have focused on the factors influencing the adoption and use of consumer electronics, little is known about the role of obsolescence risk in consumers’ resistance to these products.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to explore how refashioning can shift fashion consumer attitudes towards sustainable consumption of clothing by restoring consumption values. The study categorizes consumers into distinct groups based on consumer perception of refashioning. Finally, the study recommends three value dimensions of the circular business model to promote consumer engagement with refashioning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts an exploratory approach, applying qualitative design which involved 45 semi-structured interviews and 10 in-depth interviews with Gen Z female consumers who favour clothing lifetime extension.

Findings

The findings revealed that consumption values act as motivators and inhibitors, influencing consumers’ behaviours of using refashioning for clothing lifetime extension. Based on their distinguished levels of refashioning engagement and association with the satisfaction of consumption values, three potential consumer segments are discovered and defined as “DIY practitioners,” “DIY apprentices” and “DIY outsources”. To encourage consumer engagement with refashioning, the article suggests value proposition, value delivery and value capture dimensions of two circular business models and verifies how these cater to distinct segments to facilitate refashioning.

Originality/value

This paper provides new insights into clothing refashioning activities from the consumer perspective, bridging a gap in marketing literature. It investigates how refashioning restores consumption values and proposes three value dimensions of circular business models, enhancing clothing lifetime and engaging consumers. This unique approach incorporates consumption values and aligns with the UN’s 12th Sustainable Development Goal.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the user experience (UX) and usability of mobile and open banking solutions for digital natives in Turkiye, identifying their specific needs and behaviors with these technologies. It explores how these solutions can be optimized for efficiency, security and user satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted using a sample of 10 digital natives (aged 18–23) in Turkiye. Data were collected through three-stage user interviews, focusing on participants’ current mobile banking experiences, their expectations for open banking and a heuristic evaluation of mobile banking applications. The interviews were analyzed to understand the participants’ interaction patterns and usability issues with these applications.

Findings

Participants frequently used mobile banking for financial transactions like money transfers and QR payments. However, challenges like interface complexity, error potential and data overload hindered satisfaction. Participants were unfamiliar with open banking but were interested in its potential, though privacy concerns were prevalent.

Originality/value

This study adds to the limited literature on UX and usability in mobile and open banking, offering a design perspective focused on error prevention, trust-building and personalization.

Abstract

Purpose

The current research environment lacks a thorough examination of project success in specific domains, particularly in the context of dam project performance. Although there is a significant amount of study and a wide range of project management subjects, there is a clear absence of empirical research on dams. The purpose of this study is to fill in the knowledge gap on how to improve the performance of dam construction projects by focusing on the planning phase.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilized a survey to gather the perspectives of professionals involved in dam projects regarding critical success factors and success criteria during the project planning phase. The collected data were then analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

Four dimensions were identified for critical success factors: “project team,” “project readiness,” “engagement” and “long-term impact.” For project success criteria, “fulfill identified needs,” “functionality,” “quality performance” and “sustainability” were identified as having significance in measuring project success.

Originality/value

The article provides suggestions on how the dam engineering industry can include the identified project elements that are associated with project success. The study's significance stems from its substantial contribution to the limited literature on dam projects.

Abstract

Purpose

Evaluating emergency preparedness exercises is crucial for assessing enhanced knowledge, facilitating learning and implementing knowledge in organizations. The cognitive process of motivation for action is a precursor for action, coping behavior and individual learning. This study aims to focus on how guided evaluation of emergency preparedness exercises can enhance cognitive motivation and influence the mental readiness of exercise participants.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual paper with a model approach design. The main conceptual contribution is suggesting a model for guided evaluation in emergency preparedness exercises. We present a theoretical background for understanding the increase in motivation based on social cognitive learning theory. In particular, this study discusses how different evaluation steps contribute to enhanced motivation and learning for exercise participants.

Findings

Increased motivation and enhanced personal performance standards could be achieved through using processes that lead to self-efficacy in guided exercise evaluation. Specifically, sources of enhanced motivation, such as repeated coping experiences, self-regulation processes, mastery motivation and performance motivation, would proliferate the readiness of individual crisis managers and teams.

Practical implications

This article suggests an evaluation model for use in emergency preparedness exercises. This approach combines bottom-up and top-down processes for debriefing, reflection and feedback, both individually and in teams. This approach aims to enhance exercise participants’ motivation and utilize exercise evaluation for organizational learning.

Originality/value

The conceptual discussion leads to developing implications for evaluation practice, suggesting how to structure evaluation and why. This study is novel for its explanation of how to use evaluation in the learning process.

Abstract

Purpose

The trend among the financial investors to integrate cryptocurrencies, the very first completely digital assets, in their investment portfolio, has increased during the last decade. Even though cryptocurrencies share certain common characteristics with other investment products, they have their own distinct characteristic features, and the behavior of this asset class is currently being studied by the research scholars interested in this domain.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the text mining approach, this article examines research trends in the field of cryptocurrencies to identify prospective research needs. To narrow down to ten topics, the abstracts and the indexed keywords of 1,387 research publications on cryptocurrency, blockchain and Bitcoins published between 2013 and 2022 were analyzed using the topic modeling technique and Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA).

Findings

The findings show a wide range of study trends on various aspects of cryptocurrencies. In the recent years, there have been lots of research and publications on the topics such as cryptocurrency markets, cryptocurrency transactions and use of blockchain in transactions and security of Bitcoin. In comparison, topics such as use of blockchain in fintech, cryptocurrency regulations, blockchain smart contract protocols and legal issues in cryptocurrency have remained relatively underexplored. After using the LDA, this paper further analyzes the significance of each topic, future directions of individual topics and its popularity among researchers in the discussion section.

Originality/value

While similar studies exist, no other work has used topic modeling to comprehensively analyze the cryptocurrencies literature by considering diverse fields and domains.
