Abstract

Purpose

The authors empirically examined the theoretically recognized industrial linkages between manufacturing and services from the trade perspective. In particular, they confirmed the trade effect of manufacturing on services, given that global value chain fragmentation pervades and splits manufacturing and services segments separately in developed and developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on observations of 47 countries with manufacturing and service trade data from 1990 to 2020 and with gravity model specification, the authors primarily used the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) estimation with multiple levels of fixed effects. Considering that many zero values are included in the dependent variable and potential endogeneity, other methods such as Tobit regression, Heckman estimation and two-stage least squares estimation (2SLS) are used. Subsample estimation also supplemented the empirical research.

Findings

The results showed that manufacturing trade is a stepping-stone rather than an obstacle to service trade. This finding exhibited significant robustness under different model specifications, instrumental variable estimation and subsample checks. Moreover, in contrast to the north–north country ties, manufacturing trade between northern and southern countries has played a prominent stepping-stone role; meanwhile, manufacturing trade among core–peripheral countries has a considerably more significant impact than the outcomes of core–core and peripheral–peripheral countries.

Originality/value

The authors provided direct clarification and revealed that trade in manufacturing remains the demand basis for service trade. As trade in manufacturing and services are typical phenomena of transnational production linkages, the authors suggested exploring the underlying role of global value chain (GVC) fragmentation and the offset and even barrier effect of biased institutional arrangements on GVC fragmentation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effects of dialect connectedness between the chairman and the chief executive officer (CEO) (DCCC) on the tunneling activities of controlling shareholders.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses abnormal related-party transactions (ARPT) as a proxy for tunneling activities and traces dialects of chairmen and CEOs based on the respective birthplace information. Baseline results are examined using a fixed-effects model. The results remain robust when using the instrumental variable approach, propensity score matching (PSM) technique, changing the measurement of tunneling and Heckman two-step selection model.

Findings

The results show that DCCC reduces tunneling activities. This negative association is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises and firms whose chairmen and CEOs work in the respective hometowns. DCCC restrains tunneling activities through mechanisms by establishing an informal supervisory effect on CEOs because the CEOs fear reputational damage and strengthening cooperation between chairmen and CEOs. Further analyses suggest that this negative association is more significant when chairmen and CEOs are non-controlling shareholders, but the association is weakened during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis.

Originality/value

As dialect is a carrier of culture, this study's results imply that cultural proximity can replace formal mechanisms to enhance corporate governance.

Abstract

In smart cities striving for innovation, development, and prosperity, hydrogen offers a promising path for decarbonization. However, its effective integration into the evolving energy landscape requires understanding regional intricacies and identifying areas for improvement. This chapter examines hydrogen transport from production to utilization, evaluating technologies’ pros, cons, and process equations and using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tool to assess these technologies based on multiple criteria. It also explores barriers and opportunities in hydrogen transport within the 21st-century energy transition, providing insights for overcoming challenges. Evaluation criteria for hydrogen transport technologies were ranked by relative importance, with energy efficiency topping the list, followed by energy density, infrastructure requirements, cost, range, and flexibility. Safety, technological maturity, scalability, and compatibility with existing infrastructure received lower weights. Hydrogen transport technologies were categorized into three performance levels: low, medium, and high. Hydrogen tube trailers ranked lowest, while chemical hydrides, hydrail, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, hydrogen pipelines, and hydrogen blending exhibited moderate performance. Compressed hydrogen gas, liquid hydrogen, ammonia carriers, and hydrogen fueling stations demonstrated the highest performance. The proposed framework is crucial for next-gen smart cities, cutting emissions, boosting growth, and speeding up development with a strong hydrogen infrastructure. This makes the region a sustainable tech leader, improving air quality and well-being. Aligned with Gulf Region goals, it is key for smart cities. Policymakers, industries, and researchers can use these insights to overcome barriers and seize hydrogen transport tech opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the evolving landscape of accounting and finance research on the Chinese capital market, building on a previous study published at Abacus in 2018.

Design/methodology/approach

By incorporating data from 1999 to 2023, our analysis offers a detailed examination of shifts in academic focus, methodological advancements and thematic expansions over the last quarter-century.

Findings

The study reveals a substantial increase in accounting and finance publications related to the Chinese capital market in both Tier 1 and Asia-Pacific journals. The dynamic growth of the Chinese capital market during this period reflects profound economic transformations, characterized by technological innovations, sustainability commitments and regulatory reforms.

Originality/value

We conclude that the globally important Chinese capital market has attracted increasing academic attention, significantly advancing the understanding of accounting and finance research in China’s capital market.

Abstract

Purpose

By adopting learning theory and a guanxi perspective, this study aims to investigate the effects of interpersonal guanxi (interpersonal networks or connections) and relationship learning on companies’ business performance when operating in a large emerging market.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 294 sales managers and salespeople in the Chinese hotel sector, the authors empirically test the authors' arguments through a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach.

Findings

The authors' findings indicate that strong interpersonal guanxi tends to generate more positive business performance. Furthermore, the authors find that relationship learning plays a mediating role in the association between interpersonal guanxi and hotel companies’ business performance in a Chinese context. Finally, the authors empirically explore the moderating effect of inter-firm dependence on the contribution of interpersonal guanxi to relationship learning. Findings demonstrate that this effect varies significantly based on inter-firm dependence, with interpersonal guanxi exhibiting a greater positive impact if such dependence is high.

Originality/value

This study enriches our understanding of interpersonal guanxi and of how companies can enhance the companies' business performance in an emerging market context.

Abstract

Purpose

This empirical study is developed with an aim of exploring how and to what extent the current year’s as well as lagged years’ disclosure level of intellectual capital (IC) influences the firm's value which is measured through the Cost of Equity Capital.

Design/methodology/approach

The content analysis technique is applied on the annual reports of 50 sample companies to construct an IC disclosure index for measuring the volume of IC disclosure and to collect other relevant information for the study periods from 2015–16 to 2019–20. However, due to unavailability of information for all the study periods, 7 companies were eliminated and finally 43 companies are used for analytical purpose. Keeping in mind about the aim of this research, regression equations are run to analyze the cause–effect relationship between the IC disclosure level and the Cost of Equity Capital after excluding the influence of other factors like firm size, unlevered beta and market-to-book ratio.

Findings

The present study finds that the amount of IC disclosure has an inverse association with the cost of equity capital. Our study also confirms that lagged years’ IC disclosure has a greater inverse effect than the current year’s IC disclosure on the Cost of Equity Capital.

Originality/value

For the first time in the literature of IC disclosure in the perspective of Indian context, this empirical study takes an initiative to investigate the impact of current year’s as well as backlog years’ IC disclosure level on the Cost of Equity Capital.

Abstract

Purpose

This investigation is devoted to analyze the electroosmotic flow characteristics in a sinusoidal micropipe through a porous medium. This study aims to investigate the impact of surface waviness on Darcy–Brinkman flow in the presence of electroosmotic force, achieved through the unification of perturbation techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Analytical approximate solutions for the governing flow equations are obtained through the utilization of a perturbation method.

Findings

The analytical study reveals that the periodic roughness on the surface of the micropipe generates periodic disturbances not only in the potential fields but also in the velocity profiles. An increase in the relative waviness of the pipe leads to the generation of corresponding waviness within the boundary layers of the flow. Surface waviness reduces the average velocity by increasing frictional resistance, while higher Darcy numbers and electroosmotic parameters lead to higher velocities by reducing flow resistance and enhancing electrokinetic forces, respectively. In addition, the presence of waviness introduces higher flow resistivity, contributing to an overall increase in the friction factor. Higher permeability in porous media induces boundary-layer reverse flows, resulting in elevated flow resistivity.

Originality/value

The current findings offer valuable insights for researchers in biomedical engineering and related fields. The author’s discoveries have the potential to drive advancements in microfluidic systems, benefiting various domains. These include optimizing drug delivery in biomedical devices, improving blood filtration applications and enhancing the efficiency of fluid transport in porous media for engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Metro stations have become a crucial aspect of urban rail transportation, integrating facilities, equipment and pedestrians. Impractical physical layout designs and pedestrian psychology impact the effectiveness of an evacuation during a metro fire. Prior research on emergency evacuation has overlooked the complexity of metro stations and failed to adequately consider the physical heterogeneity of stations and pedestrian psychology. Therefore, this study aims to develop a comprehensive evacuation optimization strategy for metro stations by applying the concept of design for safety (DFS) to an emergency evacuation. This approach offers novel insights into the management of complex systems in metro stations during emergencies.

Design/methodology/approach

Physical and social factors affecting evacuations are identified. Moreover, the social force model (SFM) is modified by combining the fire dynamics model (FDM) and considering pedestrians' impatience and panic psychology. Based on the Nanjing South Metro Station, a multiagent-based simulation (MABS) model is developed. Finally, based on DFS, optimization strategies for metro stations are suggested.

Findings

The most effective evacuation occurs when the width of the stairs is 3 meters and the transfer corridor is 14 meters. Additionally, a luggage disposal area should be set up. The exit strategy of the fewest evacuees is better than the nearest-exit strategy, and the staff in the metro station should guide pedestrians correctly.

Originality/value

Previous studies rarely consider metro stations as sociotechnical systems or apply DFS to proactively reduce evacuation risks. This study provides a new perspective on the evacuation framework of metro stations, which can guide the designers and managers of metro stations.

Abstract

Purpose

Climate change, a complex global issue, has prompted a wide range of actors – from nations to tiny communities – to seek solutions to mitigate its consequences. The growing emphasis on collaborative governance has resulted in substantial research on the topic. This paper aims to address the existing research void by using a bibliometric approach to investigate the evolution of studies on collaborative governance in the context of climate change.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a bibliometric mapping of research on collaborative governance on climate change issues from the first study presented in 2007 to the research conducted in 2023, using 222 articles derived from the Scopus database and Web of Science. Steps for comprehensive bibliometric literature mapping via the VOSviewer software.

Findings

The study includes a complete overview of significant themes, including the most cited research, contributions from authors, countries, and institutions, as well as network analysis including co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-occurrence. Notably, the study looks at which countries have made the most substantial contributions, with the United States dominating with 40 studies over the last decade. The analysis reveals that collaborative governance in climate change, emphasizing its importance as a tool for governments and communities to mitigate climate risks. This is consistent with research emphasizing the need for coordination across multiple players to accomplish effective climate adaptation. The paper focuses on nine diverse research clusters, including community engagement, urban governance, disaster response and economic implications.

Research limitations/implications

This study is restricted to bibliometric analysis, which is conducted using sources from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Future research is required to investigate the use of additional databases that offer a wider range of sources. In the interim, this investigation provides an overview of the concept of Collaborative Governance, which has the potential to serve as a strategy for the adaptation and resilience to climate change in global regions, cities and urban areas.

Originality/value

This study conducts a rigorous bibliometric review that improves our theoretical knowledge and practical use of collaborative governance in addressing climate change. It reveals innovative trends, research gaps and important recommendations for future studies, strengthening the strategic approach to collaborative climate action.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to optimize the design of falling film heat exchangers by providing a deeper understanding of wave characteristics and capillary flow in laminar inclined falling films at low Reynolds numbers. The focus is on the effects of different Kapitza numbers, influenced by fluid properties and inclination, on the interfacial wave behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical investigation was conducted using the volume of fluid method within OpenFOAM’s interFoam solver. This study examined the effects of Kapitza number, inclination angle and inlet disturbances on wave formation and flow dynamics, analyzing how these factors influence interfacial wave amplitude, wavelength and flow in the capillary region.

Findings

The results revealed that higher Kapitza numbers lead to the formation of stronger capillary waves. Flow separation was observed in the capillary wave region for materials with high Kapitza numbers. An improved Nosoko correlation model was developed, incorporating the inclination angle to more accurately predict the relationship between wave peaks and wavelengths in inclined cases.

Originality/value

This research investigates the impact of low Kapitza number on inclined falling film flow, and a correlation model was derived that provides a broader range for evaluating wave behavior in inclined conditions, offering extended references for the design of falling film heat exchangers.
