Abstract

Purpose: The integration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) with the worldwide push toward a net-zero carbon economy is becoming more and more apparent, as both place a high priority on sustainability and environmental stewardship. This book chapter examines the elements and main influences that drive the shift to a net-zero economy, with a particular focus on the relationship between net-zero, CSR, and the creation of sustainable value.

Methodology: This research employs a secondary data analysis methodology of systematic review of scholarly research articles, reports, and online resources. Sources such as SAGE and EBSCO are scrutinized, alongside focused inquiries for qualitative data in academic databases like Emerald and Scopus.

Findings: The findings reveal that a variety of factors, including climate change awareness, governmental policy and regulation, corporate sustainability initiatives, technological advancements, investor pressure, economic possibilities, and environmental and social movements, all contribute to the shift to a net-zero economy in an interconnected way.

Originality: This chapter examines the factors that contribute to the shift to a net-zero economy, the critical factors for successful adoption, and the relationship between CSR and the net-zero economy, all of which provide valuable insights for businesses, policymakers, and stakeholders as they navigate the complexities of achieving a sustainable future.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on covariance attribution theory, this study investigates how and when cross-cultural experience develops the entrepreneurial aptitude for rule-breaking. The authors sought to replicate findings in general psychology that morally relativistic thinking mediates these relationships. Further, extant ideas surrounding rebel-like archetypes of successful entrepreneurs were tested: that is, the more entrepreneurial a person considers themselves to be, the more likely they adopt such modes of thinking.

Design/methodology/approach

A second-stage moderated mediation model is applied using a novel between-subjects experimental priming design. Participants were recruited to reflect a generalizable sample of prospective entrepreneurs from the United States. Participants engaged in a randomly assigned priming activity to re-active their prior cultural immersion experiences. They then completed a context-adjusted experimental judgment task to assess rule-breaking.

Findings

Results show that reflection on prior cross-cultural experience is positively related to proximal scores in morally relativistic cognition. Moderating effects of entrepreneurial intention provide robust evidence that those high in entrepreneurial intention are more likely to rule-break when morally relativistic thinking is high, but that those low in entrepreneurial intention are not.

Originality/value

A growing research stream suggests cross-cultural experience can uniquely instill a range of entrepreneurial aptitudes. While psychology research has found evidence for “dark side” implications of cross-cultural experience, the authors posit that entrepreneurship scholars in this domain have been reluctant to tackle this due to the ethical grey areas between breaking rules constructively and breaking rules in more nefarious ways. This study provides evidence that morally relativistic cognition is more likely to drive people who consider themselves highly entrepreneurial to engage in rule-breaking tendencies.

Abstract

The sociology and history of sport have neglected Pacific swimming cultures and their impact on global recreational and sporting cultures. This chapter explores the potential for deeper analysis of Pacific contributions to aquatic recreational practices via Solomon Islands swimming. The focus is on the contributions and representations of Alick Wickham (1886–1967), a Solomon Islander who lived in Australia during the first three decades of the 20th century. Wickham, who was a champion swimmer and diver recognised nationally and internationally for his abilities, is popularly credited with introducing the crawl, or freestyle, stroke to swimming competition. While some commentators acknowledge that Wickham's crawl stroke was a practice called tapatapala in his home, Roviana, on New Georgia in the western Solomons, and that some of his other techniques and styles had Solomon Islands origins, little attention is paid to these Pacific cultural antecedents. This chapter examines Wickham's styles, reflects on their Roviana influences, and asks why these Pacific dimensions of his aquatic practices were, and continue to be, overlooked. This marginalisation of Pacific swimming cultures is analysed through the lenses of prevailing racial hierarchies and whiteness as a dominant discourse that continues to privilege white Australia development of the crawl stroke over its Solomons origins and elides other water practices that influenced Wickham.

Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of sport in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the South Pacific context, focusing particularly on socio-economic and environmental challenges, with an emphasis on climate change action. We explored how sports, and education through sports, can contribute to climate action in Vanuatu and other Pacific Islands. Vanuatu serves as a case due to its shared vulnerabilities with many Pacific Islands, such as a small economy heavily dependent on climate-sensitive sectors like tourism and agriculture, reliance on natural resources for livelihoods, a young population and substantial foreign aid dependence. Additionally, Vanuatu has well established and accessible policies on sports, sustainable development, climate action and youth engagement. Given its climate vulnerability, Vanuatu places significant emphasis on sustainable development practices and policies. We examined the alignment between Vanuatu's sport policies and SDGs-related policies, underlining the necessity for policy coherence to harness sports as a force for sustainable development. This chapter serves as a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers and practitioners interested in the dynamic relationship between sport and the SDGs in the Pacific Islands, offering valuable insights and recommendations for harnessing sports as a tool for promoting sustainable development in this region.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the impact of internal expectations, such as fantasy of success and fear of failure and external factors, such as social environment and past experiences, on entrepreneurial choice.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on achievement motivation and social cognitive theories, the authors construct hypotheses and use secondary data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) database and Economic Freedom Index report to empirically test the hypotheses. The authors also use propensity score matching to solve the endogeneity issue and test the robustness.

Findings

Internal expectations (fantasy of success and fear of failure) on business outcomes inversely affect entrepreneurial choices, with a vibrant business environment amplifying and past failure experience mitigating these effects.

Originality/value

Due to the economic recession, governments encourage small businesses. Thus, the complexity of individual entrepreneurial motivations and influencing factors necessitate deeper exploration. This study is one of the first research offering insights into entrepreneurial motivations from combined dimensions and providing theoretical support for strategies promoting public entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

The term “Insider CEO” refers to actor in the top management at corporate level who has the advantage of having better information regarding a company’s resources to make investment decisions. This study aims to examine the relationship between insider chief executive officers (CEOs) and investment efficiency in emerging economies.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors comprises sample of nonfinancial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period of 2011–2021, using an archival approach through regression analysis.

Findings

This study demonstrates a significant negative relationship between insider CEOs and investment efficiency. In addition, audit quality as the firm audited by BIG4 accounting firm changes the direction of previously negative findings, turning them into significant positive relationships, and audit quality acts as a moderating factor on the insider CEOs and investment efficiency nexus. Furthermore, the authors conducted a series of endogeneity and robustness tests to strengthen the results of this study.

Research limitations/implications

This study offers new ideas in the investment literature and its practice in companies, where it highlights the role of the existence of an insider CEO in practice on investment efficiency. The authors provide recommendations to companies, potential investors and policymakers regarding the potential for insider CEOs to influence investment returns that tend to be less efficient. Therefore, this study proves that the presence of an insider CEO has a higher risk-taking preference, which has the potential to influence less efficient investment practices.

Originality/value

Several previous studies have focused more on the role of CEOs who come from outside the company and their impact on investment practices. However, it is not clear whether insider CEOs will influence the company’s investment efficiency practices driven by the perspective of “risk preferences and investment returns”. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to substantiate the role of CEOs based on their origin and their impact on less efficient investment practices.

Abstract

Purpose

Publicly available datasets in the USA present data suppression issues that limit the ability to investigate entrepreneurial subgroups like military veterans, which account for about one in ten entrepreneurs in the USA. Thus, despite public desire to support veteran entrepreneurs (“vetrepreneurs”), there is a limited descriptive understanding on the relationship between veteran business owner demographics, such as gender and race, and their business survival and growth. We address this limited understanding in this article by providing descriptive evidence on veteran-owned business survival and growth, emphasizing variation across race and gender.

Design/methodology/approach

We use limited-access longitudinal microdata to provide descriptive evidence on the survival and growth of veteran-owned firms across race and gender.

Findings

Findings indicate statistically significant variation across demographic subgroups’ business survival and employment growth. For example, veteran-owned firms have high women ownership rates, greater employment, revenues and payrolls, but also lower employment and revenue growth. More generally we provide descriptive evidence that military experience or the military community help women overcome the gender gap in small business survival.

Originality/value

This type of descriptive research is common among entrepreneurial researchers, however, peer-reviewed research specific to US veterans is very limited. These descriptive results are useful for policymakers and for spurring future policy research related to veteran entrepreneurs.

Abstract

Purpose

This article explores the use of natural language processing (NLP) techniques and machine learning (ML) models to discover underlying concepts of gender inequality applied to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in female social media conversations. The first purpose is to characterize female users who use this platform to share content around this area. The second is to identify the most prominent themes among female users’ digital production of gender inequality concepts, applied to AI technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

Social opinion mining has been applied to historical Twitter data. Data were gathered using a combination of analytical methods such as word clouds, sentiment analyses and clustering. It examines 172,041 tweets worldwide over a limited period of 359 days.

Findings

Empirical data gathered from interactions of female users in digital dialogues highlight that the most prominent topics of interest are the future of AI technologies and the active role of women to guarantee gender balanced systems. Algorithmic bias impacts female user behaviours in response to injustice and inequality in algorithmic outcomes. They share topics of interest and lead constructive conversations with profiles affiliated with gender or race empowerment associations. Women challenged by stereotypes and prejudices are likely to fund entrepreneurial solutions to create opportunities for change.

Research limitations/implications

This study does have its limitations, however. First, different keywords are likely to result in a different pool of related research. Moreover, due to the nature of our sample, the largest proportion of posts are from native English speakers, predominantly (88%) from the US, UK, Australia and Canada. This demographic concentration reflects specific social structures and practices that influence gender equity priorities within the sample. These cultural contexts, which often emphasize inclusivity and equity, play a significant role in shaping the discourse around gender issues. These cultural norms, preferences and practices are critical in understanding the individual behaviours, perspectives and priorities expressed in the posts; in other words, it is vital to consider cultural context and economic determinants in an analysis of gender equity discussions. The US, UK, Australia and Canada share a cultural and legal heritage, a common language, values, democracy and the rule of law. Bennett (2007) emphasizes the potential for enhanced cooperation in areas like technology, trade and security, suggesting that the anglosphere’s cultural and institutional commonalities create a natural foundation for a cohesive, influential global network. These shared characteristics further influence the common approaches and perspectives on gender equity in public discourse. Yet findings from Western nations should not be assumed to apply easily to the contexts of other countries.

Practical implications

From a practical perspective, the results help us understand the role of female influencers and scrutinize public conversations. From a theoretical one, this research upholds the argument that feminist critical thought is indispensable in the development of balanced AI systems.

Social implications

The results also help us understand the role of female influencers: ordinary individuals often challenged by gender and race discrimination. They request an intersectional, collaborative and pluralistic understanding of gender and race in AI. They act alone and endure the consequences of stigmatized products and services. AI curators should strongly consider advocating for responsible, impartial technologies, recognizing the indispensable role of women. This must consider all stakeholders, including representatives from industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), civil society and academia.

Originality/value

This study aims to fill critical research gaps by addressing the lack of a socio-technical perspective on AI-based decision-making systems, the shortage of empirical studies in the field and the need for a critical analysis using feminist theories. The study offers valuable insights that can guide managerial decision-making for AI researchers and practitioners, providing a comprehensive understanding of the topic through a critical lens.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore unintended effects of branding in a healthcare environment. Children’s hospitals often treat both women and children. The current research examines the implications of sub-branding women’s services and its potential impact on how patients and providers perceive these services.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-actor qualitative method is used, incorporating in-depth interviews, focus groups and observations. This approach allowed for a comprehensive understanding of how hospital administrators, physicians, staff and patients perceive service exclusion when women’s services are located within a children’s hospital.

Findings

The findings suggest that sub-branding can have negative effects on both patients and providers. The data show that this can lead to service exclusion due to perceptions of confusion and a lack of belonging. As a result, sub-branding women’s services in a children’s hospital may unintentionally create a subordinated service environment for adult patients and their providers, which has important implications for policy and other service settings.

Originality/value

The authors introduce the concept of a subordinated service environment and explore how patients and providers perceive sub-branded women’s services in children’s hospitals. The study contributes to service theory by showing how and why branding efforts can unintentionally lead to service exclusion.

Abstract

Purpose

Health technologies are an issue that directly affects the sustainability and quality of health services. Due to budget constraints, it is not financially possible for businesses to apply comprehensive improvement strategies to all these criteria. In this case, it is possible for businesses to implement more priority strategies. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to evaluate the important performance indicators of health technology investments.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, with the help of the artificial intelligence system, a decision matrix is established. Secondly, spherical fuzzy total order of preference decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory methodology is taken into consideration for weighting the criteria. Thirdly, emerging seven countries are ranked by using spherical fuzzy MultiAtributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA).

Findings

The findings demonstrate that the criteria of health policies and research and development are defined as the most significant factor in this regard. China and Turkey are also found to be the most successful emerging countries with respect to the performance of health technology investments.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this study is that a novel decision-making model is generated by integrating artificial methodology into the spherical fuzzy sets.
