Abstract

Purpose

Utilizing electrical discharge machining (EDM) to process micro-holes in superalloys may lead to the formation of remelting layers and micro-cracks on the machined surface. This work proposes a method of composite processing of EDM and ultrasonic vibration drilling for machining precision micro-holes in complex positions of superalloys.

Design/methodology/approach

A six-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool was developed, whose software control system adopted a real-time control architecture that integrates electrical discharge and ultrasonic vibration drilling. Among them, the CNC system software was developed based on Windows + RTX architecture, which could process the real-time processing state received by the hardware terminal and adjust the processing state. Based on the SoC (System on Chip) technology, an architecture for a pulse generator was developed. The circuit of the pulse generator was designed and implemented. Additionally, a composite mechanical system was engineered for both drilling and EDM. Two sets of control boards were designed for the hardware terminal. One set was the EDM discharge control board, which detected the discharge state and provided the pulse waveform for turning on the transistor. The other was a relay control card based on STM32, which could meet the switch between EDM and ultrasonic vibration, and used the Modbus protocol to communicate with the machining control software.

Findings

The mechanical structure of the designed composite machine tool can effectively avoid interference between the EDM spindle and the drilling spindle. The removal rate of the remelting layer on 1.5 mm single crystal superalloys after composite processing can reach over 90%. The average processing time per millimeter was 55 s, and the measured inner surface roughness of the hole was less than 1.6 µm, which realized the  micro-hole machining without remelting layer, heat affected zone and micro-cracks in the single crystal superalloy.

Originality/value

The test results proved that the key techniques developed in this paper were suite for micro-hole machining of special materials.

Abstract

Purpose

Well-constructed transportation infrastructure may effectively decrease barriers to the flow of innovative human resources and inventive elements, accelerating enterprise innovation activities. This study will explore how HSR helps enterprises achieve ambidextrous innovation, including the mediating mechanism of absorbed slack resources, innovative talents, and the heterogeneous effects of management shareholding ratio and financing constraints.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on resource dependence theory and social network theory, this study employs a quasi-natural experiment of China’s high-speed railway and builds a multi-time point DID model to investigate its influence on enterprise ambidextrous innovation.

Findings

Results suggest that the HSR positively influences both exploitative and exploratory innovation, and the influence is more substantial on exploitative innovation. Further analysis finds two influencing channels through which HSR influences enterprise ambidextrous innovation: providing redundant resources and attracting innovative talents. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that HSR has a more significant positive effect on exploratory innovation for enterprises with high management shareholding. In the low financing constraint group, the HSR opening has a more significant impact on ambidextrous innovation.

Practical implications

In ambidextrous innovation, enterprises should rationalize the allocation of resources, attach importance to the innovative talent introduction, and choose differentiated paths based on intrinsic characteristics. Meanwhile, the government should actively improve the HSR routes and continuously improve the innovative environment.

Originality/value

This study enriches the theoretical research framework of HSR and ambidextrous innovation by identifying the channel mechanisms and boundary conditions through which HSR affects ambidextrous innovation and expands the consequences of HSR and the antecedents of ambidextrous.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to introduce a novel bidirectional soft actuator as an enhancement to conventional pneumatic network actuators. This improvement involves integrating air chambers positioned at specific angles to improve stability, adaptability and grasping efficiency in various environments.

Design/methodology/approach

The design approach incorporates air chambers positioned at a 45° angle relative to the horizontal direction at the actuator's terminus, along with additional chambers at a 90° angle. Mathematical models are developed for longitudinal and transverse bending, as well as for obliquely connected cavities, based on the assumption of piecewise constant curvature. Analyses are conducted on output forces, bending characteristics and end contact areas for both transverse and longitudinal ends.

Findings

The proposed soft actuator surpasses traditional pneumatic network actuators in gripping area due to the inclusion of a diagonal air cavity and a transverse pneumatic network structure at the terminus. As a result, it provides torsion and gripping force in both directions. Testing on a dedicated platform with two variants of grippers demonstrates superior gripping force capability and performance in complex environments.

Practical implications

Through the design of multiangle chambers, the soft actuator exhibits diverse driving angles and morphological variations, offering innovative design perspectives for industrial grasping.

Social implications

The design of multiangle chambers facilitates personalized configurations of soft actuators by researchers, enabling tailored angles for specific interaction environments to achieve desired functionalities. This approach offers novel insights into soft actuator design, addressing more prevalent industrial grasping challenges.

Originality/value

This study introduces a novel soft actuator design that significantly enhances gripping capabilities in comparison to conventional pneumatic network actuators. The incorporation of specific air chamber configurations and mathematical modeling provides valuable insights for the development of adaptable and efficient robotic grippers for industrial and household applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Sensegiving is inherently a sociopolitical activity through which leaders shape their subordinates’ understanding of organizational change. However, it remains unclear as to why and which leaders actively engage in and effectively perform sensegiving during organizational change. This study employs social/political influence theory and develops a two-stage moderated mediation model to address this question. The study aims to examine the antecedent (leader’s willingness to support change) and outcome (team commitment to change) of sensegiving as well as the moderating role of the leader’s political skill in the relationships between the leader’s willingness to support change and sensegiving, and between sensegiving and team commitment to change.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilized a two-stage, dual-source survey method. In the first stage, data were collected from 56 leaders. In the second stage, data were collected from 271 team members. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that a leader’s willingness to support change positively affects sensegiving, and sensegiving positively affects team commitment to change. The leader’s political skill moderates the effect of the leader’s willingness to support change on sensegiving as well as the effect of sensegiving on team commitment to change. Moreover, a two-stage mediated moderation model shows that the relationship between a leader’s willingness to support change and team commitment to change through sensegiving is moderated by the leader’s political skill.

Originality/value

This study, for the first time, investigates why leaders engage in sensegiving and the collective-level effects of sensegiving during organizational change, deepening our understanding of the antecedents and consequences of sensegiving. Furthermore, by revealing the role of a leader’s political skill in both the engagement in sensegiving and its effectiveness, this study extends our understanding of which leaders actively engage in and effectively perform sensegiving. These findings also contribute to the literature on collective-level change response.
