Abstract

Purpose

Labor process theory explains that employers prefer technology and systems over employees for efficiency gains. However, the mechanisms explaining the influence of technology and systems on different work-related employee outcomes are still a question mark. The purpose of this study is to test a mediation mechanism explaining how workforce analytics influence the work fulfillment experience of employees through work volition.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected dyadic data from 55 HR managers and 350 employees serving in 55 different subsidiaries of Multinational Corporations in Pakistan.

Findings

The statistical results demonstrate that workforce analytics negatively affect fulfillment at work. However, work volition may reduce the negative relationship between workforce analytics and fulfillment at work. This study also found a significant but negative relationship between work volition and fulfillment at work.

Originality/value

This study found that integrating the use of workforce analytics with the work volition of employees is critical for positive employee outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore the role of digital leadership in fostering strategic agility, innovation adaptivity, organizational agility and resilience in the context of digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an interpretive case study approach and using a thematic data analysis technique, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with digital leaders from five different media firms across the UAE.

Findings

The findings reveal that digital leaders are central to developing and executing digital strategies that enhance organizational agility and competitive edge, particularly in firms’ digital transformation. Digital leaders catalyze innovation and adaptability, ensuring the organization’s readiness for technological and market shifts. Moreover, digital leaders are instrumental in fostering an environment that promotes continuous learning, technological integration and a culture of change, which drives organizational agility and resilience.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in its focused examination of digital leadership within the UAE’s media sector, offering new insights into how digital leadership drives strategic agility, innovation adaptivity, organizational agility and resilience in a regionally specific digital transformation context. Our findings contribute to the broader academic and practical understanding of digital transformation in the media industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the literature on Generation Z (Gen Z) accessible through Scopus to determine which nations, universities and writers have the highest publication and citation rates on the topic. Together with identifying the most popular keywords and trending topics over the years found in the literature analysis, the study also aims to ascertain the patterns of collaboration among writers and nations.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers searched the Scopus database to collect and assess the literature on the topic. The paper used applications such as Biblioshiny, VosViewer, Python, MS Access, Power BI and Excel to collect, analyze and present the literature.

Findings

The analysis shows that authors prefer to use the terms “Gen Z”, “digital natives” and “social media” most often. Findings revealed that the topic is well-researched in different fields of study including social science, computer science, business management, engineering and arts and humanities from the perspective of various world regions such as Europe, America, Australia and Asia. However, the African region was less discussed in the literature, indicating the need for more research covering the context of underdeveloped nations. Moreover, the USA accounts for the greatest proportion of publications produced in cross-border collaboration, especially with China and the UK.

Research limitations/implications

This examination is crucial for academics and researchers, policymakers and businesses seeking insights into the preferences, challenges and opportunities associated with this generation to inform effective strategies and decision-making. Furthermore, by identifying key themes, trends and gaps in the existing literature, this paper can serve as a foundational study for future researchers to select the prospective research topics related to Gen Z.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that shares a bibliometric analysis of literature published on Gen Z. This paper is an attempt to fill the research gap on the topic and also shares implications for relevant stakeholders and future research directions for prospective researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the correlation between authentic leadership and career competence, exploring the mediating roles of tacit knowledge sharing and employee service innovative behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using convenience sampling and a time-lagged design from the Pakistani banking sector. The time-lagged design was employed to gather data at two different points in time. SPSS statistical software was used for descriptive analysis, and hypotheses were tested using Mplus.

Findings

The results demonstrate that authentic leadership has a significant positive impact on tacit knowledge sharing. This knowledge sharing, in turn, positively impacts employee service innovative behavior, which subsequently enhances career competence. Furthermore, tacit knowledge sharing mediates the relationship between authentic leadership and employee service innovative behavior.

Social implications

This study has social implications for organizations aiming to align their inclusive goals with societal needs. The findings can help foster a culture of knowledge sharing, thereby contributing to societal innovation.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable insights into how authentic leadership contributes to career competence, thus enriching the existing literature on this topic.

Case overview/synopsis

The case study centered on the Sukkur IBA University in Pakistan, highlighting the challenges faced by its student-managed fund (SMF). From November 2015 to January 2023, the case study offers a comprehensive examination of the fund’s activities in the financial services and higher education domains. Mr Shankar Talreja, the fund manager, contemplating with significant investment losses because of macroeconomic fluctuations, specifically the rising policy rates by the State Bank of Pakistan. These losses challenge the sustainability of the SMF, which serves as a practical learning platform for students. The primary dilemma revolves around whether to continue operating the fund amid consistent losses or to dissolve it, redirecting resources to other educational programs. This case focuses on financial decision-making, risk management and investment strategies, tailored for academic settings.

Complexity academic level

This case study is intended for use in graduate- and undergraduate-level courses on corporate strategy, investment management and finance. It is appropriate for graduate students who are looking to apply these concepts more deeply as well as undergraduate students who have a strong foundation in finance due to the complexity of the financial concepts involved, such as risk management, portfolio strategy and macroeconomic impacts.

Abstract

Purpose

The hybrid nanofluid flow due to a rotating disk has numerous applications, including centrifugal pumps, paper production, polymers dying, air filtration systems, automobile cooling and solar collectors. This study aims to investigate the convective heat transport and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) hybrid nanofluid flow past a stretchable rotating surface using the Yamada-Ota and Xue models with the impacts of heat generation and thermal radiation.

Design/methodology/approach

The carbon nanotubes such as single-wall carbon nanotubes and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are suspended in a base fluid like water to make the hybrid nanofluid. The problem’s governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. Then, the numerical solutions are found with a bvp4c function in MATLAB software. The impacts of pertinent parameters on the flow and temperature fields are depicted in tables and graphs.

Findings

Two solution branches are discovered in a certain range of unsteadiness parameters. The fluid temperature and the rate of heat transport are enhanced when the thermal radiation and heat generation effects are increased. The Yamada-Ota model has a higher temperature than the Xue model. Furthermore, it is observed that only the first solution remains stable when the stability analysis is implemented.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the results stated are original and new with the investigation of MHD hybrid nanofluid flow with convective heat transfer using the extended version of Yamada-Ota and Xue models. Moreover, the novelty of the present study is improved by taking the impacts of heat generation and thermal radiation.

Abstract

Purpose

The current research study aims to explore the rising appeal of creative industry for institutionally embedded women entrepreneurs of rural Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research methodology is adopted to conduct the research study. Primary data is collected through in-depth interviews with 38 women entrepreneurs working in two sectors of creative industry in rural Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Findings

The research study explored creative industry as the most informal, non-traditional, low cost, flexible and convenient business sector for institutionally embedded Pukhtoon women entrepreneurs of rural KP.

Practical implications

The study draws the attention of policymakers and government to consider the informal norms in which women entrepreneurship is deeply embedded, while making entrepreneurship development policies and programs. The research study drives the attention of government toward making entrepreneurial education and training facilities easily available so that the skill and talent of women entrepreneurs can be more polished and enhanced. It further suggests that if the policymakers and Government of Pakistan take positive initiations and recognize the paramount importance, the creative industry of Pakistan has the potential of contributing toward uplifting of the economy.

Originality/value

The study helps in identifying the prevailing social and cultural norms in KP that shapes the choice of women entrepreneurs toward entrepreneurship in creative industry. It emphasizes to understand the reasons, for which women in KP, opt to open their entrepreneurial ventures in creative industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the intricate dynamics within the hospitality service sector, which predominantly employs low-wage and low-skilled workers. These employees frequently encounter challenges related to breaches in their psychological contracts. Despite their critical role in customer service, their experiences are often overlooked in organizational inclusion research. We investigate the relationship between employees’ perceptions of organizational inclusion and their assessments of organizational ethical virtues (OEVs), considering the potential moderating effect of psychological contract breach. Furthermore, it explores how these factors influence customer- and organizationdirected organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs).

Design/methodology/approach

Our research design incorporates a two-stage moderated-mediation model to test our proposed hypotheses empirically. A two-source sample of 451 European hotel managers and employees extends the inquiry with the proposed model. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the proposed relationships.

Findings

Findings reveal that organization inclusion is positively associated with OEV and employee-perceived OEV mediates an indirect link between organization inclusion on customer-oriented OCB. Moreover, psychological contract breach (P CB) attenuates the association between organization inclusion and OEV at the first stage and OEV, and OCB at the second stage.

Originality/value

The findings robustly corroborate our proposed model. The study findings culminate in a discussion accentuating the extensive implications of our findings for both research and practicality within the hospitality sector. Anchored in empirical revelations, we delineate avenues for future exploration in this pivotal domain.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore computer-assisted language learning (CALL) activities to improve the English essay writing of Pakistani university students. It highlights the role of CALL in the language proficiency model cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP), which can enable second language learners to engage in more critical thinking skills effectively. Furthermore, it aims to explore English language teachers’ experience about the use of CALL-based activities in English language classrooms or labs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study followed a pre-post study design to examine whether the structure of an essay and computer-based activities helped to improve English language proficiency among non-native speakers. This design is adopted to investigate the effects of CALL activities on students’ English essays. This study used data from 198 students and after this, four English teachers were interviewed to know their opinions and observations about these CALL-based activities and students’ essay writings. Pre- and post-test data was analysed in percentages and further examined through a t-test. The findings of teachers’ interviews were further analysed through Nvivo software to develop an understanding of research questions through significant themes.

Findings

The pre-test results confirmed that students’ language proficiency is underdeveloped and informal. Students needed help constructing introductory paragraphs with the reader’s hook, background information, three-point thesis statement and transitional hook. Whereas, post-test results showed that students’ English language proficiency in essay writing was found improved with the use of technological tools and CALL-based activities. Furthermore, it was observed that structure and teacher feedback in essay writing are vital for English proficiency.

Originality/value

This study benefits English language teachers, administrators, language policymakers and syllabus designers at colleges and universities. The debate over how to improve English language proficiency and academic achievement presents diverse challenges across several countries. Non-native speakers, at an undergraduate level, can significantly improve academically and become proficient in English essay writing with the help of structural guidelines and the use of educational technology. This article demonstrates a two-way process to improve an objective definition of English language development, which is conceivable if the technology is adopted.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of Sharia-compliant (SC) finance on economic growth by decomposing it into working capital, investment and household finance. The goal is to understand not only the general impact of Islamic financing but also how its various components contribute to economic development.

Design/methodology/approach

Using annual data from 33 provinces in Indonesia from 2010 to 2021, the authors use the fixed effects model, accounting for cross-sectional heterogeneity. The study explores the competitive dynamics between Islamic and conventional banking, focusing on how Sharia financing market share affects economic growth. Robustness checks ensure the reliability of the findings.

Findings

The results show that total Islamic financing and its components (working capital, investment and household finance) positively impact economic growth. However, a higher market share of Sharia financing can constrain growth, suggesting an underdeveloped market for SC products. This finding emphasizes the need for a balanced development of both Islamic and conventional financial sectors to support sustainable economic growth.

Research limitations/implications

Future research could extend the time frame or investigate other emerging markets to confirm these results. Further studies could also explore how different types of Sharia financing affect specific sectors, such as agriculture or manufacturing, to offer more targeted insights for policymakers and investors.

Practical implications

Policymakers could use the insights from this study to create incentives for Islamic financial institutions to develop tailored products for critical sectors, such as microfinance for smallholder farmers or investment financing for sustainable agriculture. These initiatives would enhance access to finance, stimulate local economies and align with Indonesia’s development goals.

Social implications

Understanding the role of Sharia financing in growth can help devise strategies that promote ethical investment and reduce poverty. The findings highlight the potential of SC finance to contribute to social welfare and economic equity.

Originality/value

This study provides a unique analysis of how different forms of SC finance affect economic development, filling a gap in the literature. It offers valuable insights for academics, policymakers and practitioners in the field of Islamic finance, emphasizing the nuanced relationship between financial structure and economic growth.

Contribution to impact

This study contributes to the literature by analyzing the decomposition of Sharia financing into specific categories and their distinct impacts on growth. It suggests that existing models need to account for market development and competitive dynamics when evaluating the role of Islamic finance in economic development.
