Abstract

Purpose

To solve the problems of annotation noise, ambiguity recognition and nested entity recognition in the field of Chinese furniture, this paper aims to design a new recognition model ALE-BiLSTM-CRF.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper addresses the relative independence of text characters in the Chinese furniture domain named entity recognition (NER) task. It also considers the limited information provided by these text characters in this task. Therefore, a model named ALE-BiLSTM-CRF for Chinese furniture domain NER is proposed. First, the ERNIE pre-trained model is used to transform text into a dynamic vector that integrates contextual information. And adversarial learning is combined to generate adversarial samples to enhance the robustness of the model. Next, the BiLSTM module captures the temporal information of the context, and the multi-head attention mechanism integrates long-distance semantic features into the character vectors. Finally, a CRF layer is used to learn the constraints between labels, enabling the model to generate more reasonable and semantically consistent label sequences. This paper conducts comparative experiments with mainstream models on the Weibo data set, achieving an F1 score of 75.52%, demonstrating its generality and robustness. Additionally, comparative and ablation experiments are conducted on a self-constructed furniture data set in the Chinese furniture field, achieving an F1 score of 89.62%, verifying the model’s superiority and effectiveness.

Findings

This paper conducts comparative experiments with mainstream models on the Weibo data set, achieving an F1 score of 75.52%, demonstrating its generality and robustness. Additionally, comparative and ablation experiments are conducted on a self-constructed furniture data set in the Chinese furniture field, achieving an F1 score of 89.62%, verifying the model’s superiority and effectiveness.

Research limitations/implications

This paper demonstrates its universality and generalization by conducting comparative experiments with mainstream models on the Weibo data set. It also conducts comparative experiments with representative pre-trained models on the furniture data set and conducts ablation experiments on the model itself, further demonstrating the superiority and effectiveness of the model.

Practical implications

In the furniture domain, NER aims to use various methods, including rule templates, machine learning and deep learning techniques, to extract structured information related to furniture from unstructured text. These pieces of information may include the name, material, brand, style and function of the furniture. By extracting and identifying these named entities, this paper can provide more accurate data support for furniture design, manufacturing and marketing, thereby promoting further development and innovation in the furniture industry.

Social implications

In the furniture field, NER faces some special challenges, which are different from entity recognition in general fields. Furniture terminology is often highly specialized and complex in structure. At the same time, there may be a large number of nested entities in the text of the furniture field. For example, the furniture name “sofa bed” contains two entities “sofa” and “bed.” Current sequence labeling methods often find it difficult to recognize such nested entity structures simultaneously. Additionally, because furniture terminology and descriptions may change with trends and design styles, the model also needs to have a certain degree of adaptability and update capabilities. These reasons make it more difficult to extract information in the furniture field, and NER in the furniture field faces huge challenges.

Originality/value

Abstract

The authors of this chapter emphasise the importance of addressing the well-being of Pacific Island rugby players. Indeed, the need to consider players' physical and mental well-being, cultural identity, spirituality and socio-economic challenges is underscored. The personal background and lived experiences of the first author, who identifies as Pasifika and has a wealth of experience as a professional rugby player, as the captain of Fiji at the 2011 Rugby World Cup and founder of Pacific Rugby Players, add a unique perspective to the discussion. The authors advocate for a deeper understanding of what constitutes holistic well-being from a Pacific perspective. They suggest the need to embrace cultural awareness and incorporate cultural practices within rugby team environments to foster inclusivity and enhance players' well-being. The authors reveal the challenges of balancing cultural expectations and the demands of professional rugby within multicultural contexts. Further, the authors acknowledge the stress, anxiety and mental health challenges that can arise from the pressure to succeed in the sport and the role of being the primary breadwinner for their family and communities. The aim of this chapter is twofold. First, to introduce well-being models currently discussed within the literature, specifically Pacific and Māori conceptions of well-being. Second, to provide recommendations as to how coaches and administrators could apply the well-being models with the aim of enhancing the well-being of professional rugby players who identify as Pasifika, specifically their spiritual well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

This systematic literature review examines the domain of sports sponsorship involving controversial industries. We delve into the shared patterns, differences and overarching themes prevalent across various dark consumption industries (i.e. alcohol, food and beverages high in fat, salt and sugar, gambling and tobacco).

Design/methodology/approach

This study systematically reviews research on controversial sports sponsorships (CSS). Literature searches in Web of Science and Scopus, and additional searches in reference lists resulted in a total of 90 publications meeting the inclusion criteria, which can be grouped into three research clusters: prevalence, impact and (in)appropriateness of CSS.

Findings

This review revealed a high prevalence of so-called controversial sponsors in sports, particularly in – but certainly not limited to – soccer. Especially gambling sponsorships have become more prominent in recent years. Ethical concerns surfaced since CSS are positively related to attitudes, preferences, purchase intention and consumption, potentially causing health-harming consequences for children and adults.

Practical implications

This study provides scholars and practitioners with insights to advocate for policy measures curbing CSS.

Originality/value

In light of the identified research gaps, we propose a research agenda to particularly investigate causal relationships between exposure to CSS and its impact by conducting longitudinal and experimental research. Additionally, we propose to establish a consumer-centered framework for processing CSS.

Abstract

Purpose

Executive turnover has increased in recent years. Most studies of executive turnover focus on CEO turnover and treat each incident of turnover as an isolated event. This research considers both CEO and CFO turnover and investigates whether the frequency of executive turnover has distinct effects on financial reporting quality.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a sample of firms extracted from Execucomp from the 1992 to 2021 period and examine three important indicators of firm’s accounting information quality: earning persistence; earnings informativeness; and accrual earnings management.

Findings

The authors find that higher frequency of executive turnovers in a 5-year period is associated with lower financial reporting quality. Specifically, the authors find that the frequency of executive turnovers is negatively associated with earnings persistence and positively associated with accrual earnings management, especially income-increasing accrual earnings management. Furthermore, the authors find that the frequencies of CEO-only turnover and combined CEO and CFO turnover, but not CFO-only turnover, are negatively associated with earnings informativeness about future cash flows. In addition, the authors find some evidence that promoting executives internally weakens the negative effect of frequent executive turnover on financial reporting quality.

Practical implications

The results suggest that while change is sometimes inevitable, frequent executive changes can create a short-horizon problem and make the realization of adaptation effects of leadership change difficult, and hence hurt company’s performance. The study suggests that organizations, especially corporate board should have robust and effective change management systems and strategies in place, which can help to mitigate the negative effect of frequent executive changes and align firms’ operations with the new leadership’s vision, maintain operational continuity, and employee engagement during periods of transition.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the management turnover literature by examining the impact of executive turnover frequency on firms’ financial reporting quality. While previous studies primarily rely on binary variables to measure management turnover, this study is among the first that focuses on the frequency of executive turnover, thus capturing more nuanced information beyond the scope of a binary variable. This measure allows the authors to focus on the disruptive effect of executive turnover, and hence better disentangles the distinct effects that multiple executive turnovers have on firm performance, which can differ from the effect of individual turnover. This distinction is crucial because the adaptation effect from executive turnover may not have adequate time to materialize within the context of several short executive tenures. The authors provide evidence that the disruptive effect manifests more strongly in firms with a higher rate of executive turnover and such disruption deteriorates firms’ financial reporting quality.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore how instructors and trainees perceive value generation within companies through Lean learning conducted in an industrial context. It specifically examines the influence of this learning on decision-making, issue resolution, opportunities for continuous improvement, waste reduction and alignment with corporate goals.

Design/methodology/approach

This research adopts a survey method, using two online questionnaires targeted at Lean instructors and trainees from companies in Northern Portugal. It included sample selection and questionnaire development based on literature and objectives. The data analysis techniques encompass descriptive statistics and coding for open-ended responses.

Findings

Instructors and trainees emphasize the effectiveness of experiential learning techniques, such as games and simulations, in facilitating the understanding and application of Lean principles. This transformative approach enhances corporate efficiency, decision-making and problem-solving capabilities. However, the study reveals that despite the widespread adoption of Lean learning in the analyzed companies, a structured framework to measure its added value is lacking. The findings underscore the need for metrics that capture Lean’s true impact: individuals who challenge the status quo and actively drive transformative solutions, positioning Lean as both a technical methodology and a human-centered driver of growth.

Research limitations/implications

The primary limitations of this study are the small sample size and its geographical focus on Northern Portugal. While the sample size is relatively limited, the selected companies’ extensive experience with Lean practices ensures that the data collected remains valuable and insightful. In addition, the regional scope may limit the generalizability of the findings to other contexts or regions. Future research should aim to address these limitations by expanding both the sample size and geographical coverage, which would provide a broader understanding of Lean learning’s impact and improve the applicability of the results to different industrial settings.

Originality/value

This study distinguishes itself through its human-centered approach to Lean learning, shifting the focus from traditional tools and techniques to the experiences of individuals. Addressing a critical gap in Portuguese research – where operational outcomes often take precedence over human factors like motivation and development – underscores Lean’s broader potential to cultivate systems thinking, sustainability and ethics.

Abstract

Purpose

This study analyses the organizational consequences of work–family conflict (WFC) among female nurses in health care sector. Moreover, this study focuses on the moderating effect of intrinsic motivation on the association between WFC dimensions with different organizational outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are collected from 347 female nurses working in health care sector at Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan and Bahawalpur regions of Pakistan, using random sampling technique. Regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses of this study.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that WFC conflict lowers job satisfaction, affective commitment and organizational citizenship behaviour. Contrary, WFC reduces job satisfaction, affective commitment and organizational citizenship behaviour and increases turnover intentions among female nurses. Moreover, intrinsic motivation moderates the association between WFC and certain organizational outcomes.

Originality/value

The study offers valuable insights for female nurses at health care sector about WFC and finally leads to theoretical contributions and practical implications for the healthcare sector of Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

This study introduces the heritage city risk dimension of the urban rail transit (URT) projects. It aims to identify the risk factors affecting URT projects within the unique context of heritage-rich cities, exploring their interrelation and evaluating critical factors.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopts a multi-case exploratory study to identify the unique challenges faced by URT projects in heritage-rich environments, followed by a comprehensive risk assessment framework integrating Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), Analytic Network Process (ANP) and Risk Interaction Network (RIN) analysis to assess identified risks in the context of Kathmandu Valley. Additionally, a risk response action is simulated using RIN analysis.

Findings

About 16 risk factors were identified from the case studies and evaluated using the proposed risk assessment methodology. The study reveals a highly interconnected risk environment, with heritage impact-related factors exerting the strongest causative influence on cost and social engagement factors. Community opposition (R8) shows the highest betweenness centrality, indicating its central position in risk propagation across the network. Cost-related risk, social demand contingency (R2) ranked as the most critical. Simulations of a targeted risk avoidance strategy showed that addressing only three key high-betweenness centrality factors (R5, R8 and R15) reduced overall risk interactions by 46%, simplifying the risk network, reducing project complexity and improving manageability.

Practical implications

The findings emphasize that project managers, urban planners and policymakers should integrate heritage preservation concerns when planning and executing URT projects in heritage-rich cities. Moreover, the research highlights that effective community engagement serves as a key strategy for reducing risk propagation and plays a crucial role in overall project risk management.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the underexplored context of URT projects in heritage-rich cities, providing a comprehensive risk management framework for identifying and assessing project risks intersecting with urban development imperatives and heritage conservation objectives.

Abstract

Purpose

Management consulting aims to enhance organizational effectiveness through manager development and empowerment. There is evidence that management consultants perceive themselves as leaders, but little research has been conducted on their power bases. The purpose of this study is to examine management consultants’ power bases to gain insight into their leadership and their perceptions regarding managers’ development.

Design/methodology/approach

Using qualitative methods, 40 consultants were interviewed, and a semi-structured interview outline was applied to identify their power bases and determine how their power base influences their leadership and managers’ development. Thematic content analysis was applied to analyze the data.

Findings

The findings indicate that management consultants have either a prominent referent or expert power base and that these two informal power bases affect consultant leadership differently: referent power leads to solving the managers’ problems, while expert power enhances managers’ self-efficacy and ability to solve their problems by themselves.

Originality/value

The study sheds light on an under-explored subject and contributes to both theory and practice; it extends and refines the connection between power dynamics and managers’ development as well as leadership theory and offers practical implications for the relationship between management consultants and managers.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, mHealth apps for COVID-19 have emerged as a new research area due to the diverse efforts to control the COVID-19 epidemic. Although there are many bibliometric studies on mHealth and its applications, no bibliometric study sheds light on mHealth apps for COVID-19 as a new research area. To address the above-mentioned research gap, the current study conducts a bibliometric analysis of research in mHealth apps for COVID-19. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the new area and its directions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a bibliometric approach to provide an analysis of the overall status of research in mHealth apps for COVID-19. The Scopus database provided by Elsevier was used to extract the analyzed data in this study. SciVal was used to perform the analyses, while VOSviewer was used for scientific mapping.

Findings

A total of 457 publications were published between 2020 and 2021 (until Tuesday, June 1) and cited 3,559 times. Publications were written by 2,375 authors, with an average of 5.20 authors per publication. Articles play a pivotal role in the literature on mHealth apps for COVID-19 in terms of production and impact. The research area of mHealth apps for COVID-19 is multidisciplinary. The United States made the largest contribution to this area, while the UK was the most influential. This study reveals the most productive and influential sources, institutions and authors. It also reveals the research hotspots and major thematic clusters in mHealth apps for COVID-19, highly cited publications and the international collaboration network.

Originality/value

mHealth apps for COVID-19 are gaining more and more importance due to their influential role in controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. Using bibliometric analysis, the study contributes to defining the knowledge structure of global research in mHealth apps for COVID-19 as a new, interdisciplinary area of research that has not previously been studied. Therefore, the study results and the comprehensive picture obtained about research in mHealth apps for COVID-19, especially at the level of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence applications, make it an effective supplement to the expert evaluation in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

Craft breweries have a growing role in the beer tourism niche as a place-based attraction but also in daily life as a community space. Research has examined how such breweries can appeal to both tourist and local markets through neolocalism in the form of place branding and local embeddedness. This paper aims to consider the extent to which breweries communicate neolocal themes in visual social media marketing through Instagram images.

Design/methodology/approach

This research examines 3,299 Instagram images posted on the official accounts of 13 Houston, Texas (USA) microbreweries and taproom breweries over the course of 2022. Content-semiotic analysis identifies key themes in these images and explores the extent to which breweries signify neolocal themes through these images.

Findings

Manifest image content generally appeals to interests in consuming beer and communicates logistical information about if, and when, to visit the brewery. Elements in Instagram images have the potential to convey meanings about neolocalism in the craft beer product, branding, local embeddedness and place-based experiences but such strategies have not been extensively developed or used.

Originality/value

Although both academic and industry sources recognize the importance of social media and visual content in connecting with potential consumers, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to examine the extent to which breweries employ neolocal strategies through social media marketing.
