Abstract
Purpose
Building on resource dependence theory and the dynamic institution-based view, this paper examines the influence of government affiliations on firm product innovation in a dynamic institutional environment.
Design/methodology/approach
Using unique panel data of Chinese manufacturing firms covering a period of 12 years (1998–2009) with 2,564,547 firm-year observations, this study chooses the panel Tobit model with random effects to explore the influence of government affiliations on firm product innovation, followed by an analysis to test the moderation effects of dynamic institutional environments.
Findings
The study findings suggest that Chinese firms with higher-level government affiliations have a relatively high product innovation performance. It finds that this innovation stimulating effect is contingent on the dynamic nature of the institutional environment. To be specific, a high speed of institutional transition may depress the positive innovation effects of government affiliations, while a more synchronized transition speed of institutional components may enhance the positive innovation effects of firms' government affiliations.
Originality/value
This study adds to a better understanding of the drivers of product innovation in Chinese firms that are situated in environments that are characterized by institutional change, using and contributing to resource dependence theory and the dynamic institution-based view.

Abstract
Purpose
The sustainable development of the platform economy has been hindered by the absence and alienation of platform corporate social responsibility. Previous studies have mainly focused on the contents and governance models for platform corporate social responsibility. This study seeks to explore which strategy participants choose in the governance of platform corporate social responsibility and their influencing factors.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a platform ecosystem approach, a quadrilateral evolutionary game model was developed, and the stabilities of subjects’ behavioral strategies and their combinations in various scenarios were analyzed. Additionally, the effects of key parameters on the system’s evolutionary path were simulated.
Findings
The ideal steady state system is achieved when platform enterprises, complementors and consumers adopt positive strategies while the government adopts lax regulation. Moreover, the evolutionary strategies of the subjects are influenced by several factors, including the participation costs of governance, the rewards and punishments imposed by platform enterprises, as well as the reputational losses of platform enterprises and complementors due to media coverage.
Practical implications
This study offers insights into improving the governance effectiveness of platform corporate social responsibility for managers and practitioners.
Originality/value
This study contributes to existing literature by considering the rational orientation of platform ecosystem members and revealing the interaction mechanisms among members. Furthermore, this study combines collective action theory and reputation theory to clarify the influencing factors on members’ behaviors.

Abstract
Purpose
Given the current friction and wear challenges faced by automobile parts and bearings, this study aims to identify a novel texture for creating anti-friction and wear-resistant surfaces. This includes detailing the preparation process with the objective of mitigating friction and wear in working conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
Femtosecond laser technology was used to create a mango-shaped texture on the surface of GCr15 bearing steel. The optimized processing technology of the texture surface was obtained through adjusting the laser scanning speed. The tribological behavior of the laser-textured surface was investigated using a reciprocating tribometer.
Findings
The friction coefficient of the mango-shaped texture surface is 25% lower than that of the conventional surface, this can be attributed to the reduced contact area between the friction ball and the micro-textured surface, leading to stress concentration at the extrusion edge and a larger stress distribution area on the contact part of the ball and disk compared to the conventional surface and the function of the micro-texture in storing wear chips during the sliding process, thereby reducing secondary wear.
Originality/value
The mango-shaped textured surface in this study demonstrates effective solutions for some of the friction and wear issues, offering significant benefits for equipment operation under light load conditions.

Abstract
Purpose
The impact of banking deregulation on firms and economic growth is heavily researched, but not the effects on banks’ risk-taking. This study aims to investigate the impact of China’s 2009 banking deregulation on bank risk-taking, particularly from a balance sheet capacity perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a difference-in-differences approach, this study examines how deregulation affects bank risk-taking. A three-stage regression strategy is employed to conduct mechanism analysis.
Findings
The results reveal that deregulated banks exhibit higher levels of risk-taking. Mechanism analysis confirms the bank balance sheet capacity channel: deregulation helps strengthen the net interest margin of deregulated banks, which enhances their balance sheet capacity and subsequently increases their risk appetite. In addition, deregulation improves firms’ access to long-term credit in regions with limited credit availability, especially for smaller firms, thereby expanding the financial sector’s service outreach.
Practical implications
While banking deregulation enhances credit availability for firms and supports the real economy, it also raises banks’ risk-taking, posing challenges to financial stability. Our study highlights the trade-off between supporting the real economy and maintaining financial stability under banking deregulation.
Originality/value
This study fills a gap in research on the effects of banking deregulation on bank risk-taking, highlighting the critical role of balance sheet capacity in this process.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to formulate a research agenda by developing a conceptual framework for studying and mitigating corporate governance issues in state-owned enterprises (SOEs), considering pertinent management theories and theories of the firm as described in the contemporary academic discourse on SOEs.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors commenced broadly with the traditional narrative review method to understand the field of corporate governance in SOEs in line with subject matter knowledge. The authors carefully identified studies on corporate governance of SOEs and read them, noting and following relevant citations. The authors then proceed with a more methodical (qualitative) systematic literature review (QSLR) process, selecting more explicit articles and taking advantage of the complementarity of narrative and QSLR methods.
Findings
The review identifies seven pertinent theories in the organisational field of SOEs and describes five of the seven theories that must be conceptualised in examining corporate governance issues in SOEs. Following the description of the theories, this paper suggests a novel strategy for minimising corporate governance issues in SOEs by bringing together corporate governance problems in SOEs and offering insights into how the management theories and the theories of the firm may be applied in studying and mitigating corporate governance problems in SOEs, considering their practices and characteristics.
Practical implications
This review paper responds to calls for further research into public entrepreneurship and elaborates theories applicable to studying corporate governance in SOEs. This involves navigating through SOEs literature, focusing on theories and how they might be conceptualised to explore corporate governance issues in SOEs. This represents the largest research convergence on SOEs, given that various corporate governance challenges typically face SOEs worldwide.
Originality/value
The review offers guidance on applying theories to understand corporate governance challenges in SOEs, particularly using the identified theories in specific corporate governance problem areas. This study appears to be one of the only ones on this topic. Thus, the propositions put forth suggest that the conceptualisation of corporate governance in SOEs in this paper adds value for academics, practitioners and policymaker observers.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to evaluate the effects of the downhole environment and auxiliary rubber bellows on the contact mechanical characteristics and sealing performance of rubber-bellows mechanical seals (RBMS) in electric submersible pumps (ESPs), considering the elastic support of the rubber bellows, multi-field coupling effect and actual operating conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
A thermal-fluid-solid multi-field coupling numerical model for RBMS in ESPs is developed using the finite element analysis and influence coefficient method. Based on the contact mechanical characteristics of RBMS, the interactions of multiple physical fields between the sealing rings and lubricating oil are accounted for to assess the liquid lubrication state and sealing performance of RBMS in ESPs.
Findings
The findings indicate the anti-leakage effects of rubber bellows, the transition of lubrication state of the sealing end face and the evolution law of sealing performance with environmental pressure, axial compression amount and contact widths of rubber bellows.
Originality/value
This study innovatively proposes a multi-field numerical research method to reveal the impact of the downhole environment and rubber bellows on RBMS in ESPs. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the sealing mechanism of RBMS and optimize the sealing design for ESPs in high-pressure environments.

Purpose
This study investigated how Generation Z adopted brand messages through trending topics and analysed the central and peripheral routes of information adoption. It explored the roles of informational and emotional supports in influencing information adoption through perceived information usefulness and considered the adoption of brand messages within trending topic discussions.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on the extension information adoption model, this study employed a quantitative approach by utilising covariance-based structural equation modelling to analyse 400 valid web-based questionnaire responses from Sina Microblog users among Generation Z in China.
Findings
Adopting brand messages via trending topics, with cues emphasising information quality as the central route and information credibility as the peripheral route, enhances perceived information usefulness. Notably, Generation Z can derive informational and emotional support from trending topic discussions, influencing their perceived information usefulness. This process operates independently of the dual routes of information adoption.
Research limitations/implications
Marketers can leverage influencers and users’ comments to motivate Generation Z to adopt brand messages through trending topics, but this study was limited by the demographic diversity of its sample and the specific types of brands analysed. Incorporating cross-cultural comparisons, group analyses, potential moderating factors and control variables could improve the model’s generalisability.
Originality/value
Compared to information adoption models rooted in the organisational information exchange, the originality of this study lies in confirming that, within the context of trending topics, which blend social connections with an anonymous environment, informational and emotional supports can serve as additional cues influencing brand information adoption via perceived information usefulness.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify the key characteristics of tourism live streamers (TLSers) that influence target consumers and examine how these characteristics enhance destination brand value by stimulating consumer emotional engagement and value co-creation behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
A questionnaire survey was conducted with 552 respondents who had viewed tourism live streaming in China. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results revealed that TLSers’ expertise had the strongest influence on consumers and positively affected their attachment, trust, participation and citizenship behaviors and perceived destination brand value. Attractiveness and trustworthiness exerted positive but weaker effects on these variables.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the theoretical development of live-streaming research by demonstrating the distinct impacts of TLSer characteristics. Furthermore, this study expands the application of the social exchange theory and value co-creation in tourism research.

Purpose
This study investigates the impact of customer stability on the cost of debt and the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty on the above relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
An empirical analysis based on the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model is conducted using China’s A-share listed companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2007 to 2021.
Findings
The results indicate that customer stability significantly inhibits the cost of debt, and the higher the environmental uncertainty, the more significant the inhibitory effect of customer stability on the cost of debt. The results of heterogeneity analyses indicate that the more intense the industry competition, the higher the customer concentration or the older the average customer age, the more significant the inhibiting effect of customer stability on the cost of debt.
Research limitations/implications
This study highlights the importance of customer relationship management and supply chain risk management, which have both theoretical and managerial implications. Despite its contributions, this study has limitations, such as China’s institutional context limits, which the generalisability of our results, and the sample size for this study is small because of limitations in measuring customer stability.
Originality/value
Existing literature has not yet reached a consistent conclusion on how customer relationships affect the cost of debt, and such studies are mainly centered around perspectives such as customer concentration and the contagion effect of supply chains. This study constructs an indicator of customer stability using detailed information on the top five customers of China’s A-share listed companies and dynamically examines the impact of customer stability on the cost of debt, which expands the research on the influencing factors of the cost of debt, the economic consequences of customer stability and the theory of customer relationship management.

Abstract
Purpose
Implementing green innovation is crucial for firms to build or sustain competitive advantages within the context of the sustainable development goals. Academic research has broadly explored how firms can induce green innovation behavior (GIB), examining external factors, but few studies in the current literature have deeply investigated unabsorbed slack as an internal antecedent of GIB. Drawing upon the behavioral theory of the firm and integrating it with dynamic capabilities theory, this study aims to address this deficiency by investigating the impact of unabsorbed slack on GIB and the mediating roles of two dimensions of capability reconfiguration: capability evolution and capability substitution in the relationship between unabsorbed slack and GIB. Furthermore, this study also discusses the moderating effects of consumer green pressure on the relationship between unabsorbed slack and capability evolution/substitution.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data were collected from 286 Chinese technology-intensive manufacturing firms to empirically test the relationships among the variables.
Findings
The results reveal that unabsorbed slack has a positive influence on GIB. Furthermore, capability evolution and substitution both play mediating roles in the relationship between unabsorbed slack and GIB. Comparative analysis showed that the mediating effect of capability substitution is stronger than that of capability evolution. Moreover, consumer green pressure strengthens the positive relationship between unabsorbed slack and capability evolution/substitution.
Originality/value
This study enriches the research on the driving forces of GIB and contributes to providing managerial implications for firms to launch green innovation activities.
