Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the dynamic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and government policy on real house price indices in five emerging economies, namely, Brazil, China, Thailand, Turkey and South Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the local projection method with a panel data set of these countries spanning from January 2020 to July 2021.

Findings

The number of COVID-19 confirmed positive cases raised housing prices, whereas government containment measures reduced them. Both conventional and unconventional monetary policy implemented by central banks to cope with the COVID-19 helped increase housing prices. These effects were strengthened by the US monetary policy via globalized financial markets.

Originality/value

First, while previous researches typically concentrated on developed countries, the authors investigate emerging economies where proportionally more people were badly affected by the pandemic. Second, a panel data set of five emerging economies enabled the authors to examine the dynamic effects of the COVID-19 crisis on housing prices. Third, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the influences of easing monetary policy on housing prices in emerging economies during the pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the technological change under development linked to the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital transformation (DT) from the perspective of a scientific mapping in a context marked by the occurrence of an unexpected event that accelerated this process such as the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and its variants.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was developed under the longitudinal scientific mapping approach and considered the period 1990–2021 using as a basis the descriptors DT and IoT. The steps followed were identification and selection of keywords; design and application of an algorithm to identify these selected keywords in titles, abstracts and keywords using terms in Web of Science (WoS) to contrast them; and performing a data processing based on the journals in the Journal Citation Report during 2022. The longitudinal study uses scientific mapping to analyze the evolution of the scientific literature that seeks to understand the acceleration in the integration of technology and its impact on the human factor, processes and organizational culture.

Findings

This study showed that the technologies converging around IoT form the basis of the main DT processes being experienced on a global scale; furthermore, it was shown that the pandemic accelerated the convergence and application of new technologies to support the major changes required for a world with new needs. Finally, China and the USA differ significantly in the production of scientific knowledge with respect to the first eight followers.

Originality/value

The knowledge gap addressed by this study is to identify the production of scientific knowledge related to IoT and its impact on DT processes at the scale of individuals, organizations and the new way of delivering value to society. This knowledge about researchers, institutions, countries and the derivation is multiple indicators allows improving decision-making at multiple scales on these issues.

Abstract

Purpose

Advancements in enhancing regional port connectivity are crucial to fostering global maritime transport. The objective of this paper is to explore the complex relationship between infrastructure connectivity and the regional port of Thailand, specifically within the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilised fuzzy logic in exploratory factor analysis and introduced a new factor based on shipping networks, port operations, trade and emerging innovations. This can enhance the regional port and facilitate infrastructure connectivity in the RCEP. The results of this study have been successfully applied in specific contexts involving port authorities and private shipping companies.

Findings

The study’s findings indicate key factors for enhancing regional ports in Thailand. These factors include integrating connectivity, creating spare hubs, addressing service issues, optimising logistics and supply chains, considering market components and leveraging the digital market. These factors are also crucial for promoting infrastructure connectivity within the RCEP framework.

Originality/value

This research presents a strategic framework for enhancing regional ports in Thailand and improving international infrastructure. This is the first attempt to examine the influence of infrastructure connectivity on regional ports by applying fuzzy exploratory factor analysis to modernise infrastructure, which is key to unlocking the region’s maritime potential.

Abstract

This chapter reviews the Metaverse’s inception and digitalization’s impact on the fashion and apparel retail industry. This review demonstrates how digital clothing rooted in the Metaverse assists industry environmental sustainability, the planet, and consumers, providing business strategies for growth through research in theory and an analysis of practices. Virtual checkout uses digital tools to help marketers and designers better understand their target audience. In the foreseeable future, the Metaverse of our works will be a well-known and safe space for budding designers. Designers will find it much simpler to bring their concepts to life thanks to the immediate relationship that Metaverse technology creates with humans.

Eco-friendly methods and technology found in the Metaverse will transform the industry. Expanding acceptance of Metaverse could lead to a 97% decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide in approximately per item 4,000 L of water, reducing its carbon footprint by around thirty percent during the company’s design and development phases.

Digital apparel may be extremely helpful leading up to the real physical manufacturing of a garment, applied to sampling, marketing and modeling prior the actual variants are put into manufacturing, significantly lowering the environmental impact of a clothing item’s entire lifecycle. Computer-generated representations of clothing cannot replace real garments entirely, and they can help reduce waste and help address overproduction-related difficulties.

This chapter clarifies how digital fashion based on the Metaverse assists business environmental sustainability, users, and acts as a resource to improve approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the feasibility of substituting freshwater with alternative water sources such as potable water (PW), harvested rainwater (HRW), stormwater (SW), borewell water (BW) and seawater (Sea W) in concrete manufacturing. The aim is to evaluate the potential of these alternative sources to support sustainable development, reduce environmental impact and conserve freshwater resources in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The research followed established concrete production standards and evaluated the chemical properties of various water sources. Fresh concrete characteristics, including setting time, workability and mechanical properties (compressive, split tensile and flexural strength), were tested at 7, 28 and 90 days. Durability assessments utilized the Volhard assay for chloride content, RCPT for chloride permeability and a physical sulfate attack test. Additionally, a life cycle assessment (LCA) examined the environmental impacts, while an economic analysis assessed cost implications for each water source.

Findings

The results showed only minor differences of 2%–3% in the fresh and mechanical properties of concrete using alternative water sources, with no significant changes in compressive, tensile or flexural strength compared to potable water. The Rapid Chloride Penetration Test (RCPT) and Nord Test techniques showed that all water sources, except seawater, are suitable for concrete mixing, as they enhance concrete durability due to their very low chloride ion concentrations, which minimize the risk of steel corrosion. The sulfate attack, including mass loss and expansion measurements for various water sources, indicates low susceptibility to except seawater. SEM and EDS HRW and SW also showed denser microstructures compared to Potable Water, indicating the absence of voids or cracks and the formation of ettringite needles, while seawater posed challenges due to high chloride content and corrosion risks. The LCA indicated that SW had the lowest environmental impact, while seawater posed substantial challenges. The economic analysis confirmed SW as the most cost-effective option, with all sources meeting production standards except seawater.

Originality/value

This study provides new insights into the sustainable use of non-potable water sources in concrete manufacturing. It demonstrates the viability of using HRW, SW and BW as alternative water sources to potable water, supporting sustainability goals in construction while conserving vital freshwater resources and reducing environmental impact.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between transformational leadership and proactive customer service performance (PCSP) in the airline industry, considering self-efficacy and emotional intelligence as mediators.

Design/methodology/approach

Bandura’s self-efficacy theory was used for formulating hypotheses. Data were gathered from 500 frontline employees and 30 supervisors to create subordinate dyads, resulting in a final sample size of 370 participants. Structural equation modeling was employed for the purpose of data analysis.

Findings

The results indicated that supervisors’ transformational leadership impacted the self-efficacy and emotional intelligence of service and frontline employees, thereby influencing PCSP. Self-efficacy and emotional intelligence of frontline employees were positively correlated with PCSP. These findings add to the existing literature by providing empirical proof of a positive association between transformational leadership and perceived customer service performance. Furthermore, this study supported the mediating roles of self-efficacy and emotional intelligence of frontline employees as mediators, showing their importance in translating transformational leadership behaviors into enhanced customer service performance.

Practical implications

The airline sector will benefit significantly from the findings of this research. It highlights the significance of transformational leadership in improving PCSP. Organizations should emphasize the creation and growth of transformational leaders capable of inspiring and motivating staff to provide excellent customer service. In addition, the research highlights the significance of self-efficacy and emotional intelligence as factors that mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and PCSP. Organizations may foster PCSP by investing in training and development programs that seek to improve workers’ self-efficacy and emotional intelligence. These programs may help participants gain confidence in their ability to deliver excellent customer service as well as improve their knowledge.

Originality/value

This research paper presents novel theoretical and practical developments in the airline industry. This research paper collected data in two phases from supervisor–subordinate dyads.

Abstract

Purpose

In the era of the circular economy, the economic growth of a country is highly dependent on the sustainable performance of the manufacturing sector. In today’s increasingly competitive world, it is important to constantly improve the manufacturing or service industry. Quality with quantity is a main characteristic, which helps a company stay in the competition. Flexibility and responsiveness to customer demands are very important for success. Generally, additional time is needed for setup caused by poor design of equipment. At this point, the terms continuous process improvement and single-minute exchange of dies (SMED) as an approach of lean manufacturing come into play. Lean manufacturing system has been identified as an approach for improving the performance of the process and product.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, high setup time is considered as major problem in the industry and a major cause and effect for high setup time was found. On the basis of the literature review and experts’ opinions, four categories of barriers, namely method, manpower, machine and tools are identified. In this study, a hybrid approach comprising of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and graph theoretic approach (GTA) has been used. First, prioritization of different categories of barriers by AHP has been done, and second, GTA has been applied for finding the barriers' intensity index. Based on this study, machine and manpower barriers have emerged as major hurdles in the high setup time of machine. The proposed framework will help organizations quantify barriers in high setup time in different manufacturing processes, thereby developing effective strategies for sustainable production.

Findings

Findings of this research will contribute to ensuring sustainable competitive advantages, but it has some limitations. Development of the permanent matrix equation for barriers of high setup time is complex and lengthy when barriers are more in number. Absolute and relative values considered while quantifying the intensity of barriers are based on experts’ opinions, which may be inconsistent. In spite of these limitations, organizations can use an illustrated approach to quantify the barriers, thereby developing strategies for successful implementation of high setup time for making them sustainable in the global market. Organizations can also benchmark their sustainability preparedness with the best in the industry. As a future scope of study, high setup time can be reduced by using SMDE technology can be further validated through an empirical and case-based approach to generalize the findings.

Research limitations/implications

Authors remain confined only to setup time. The approach is generalizable and can be extended in other areas. As a future scope of study, high setup time can be reduced by using single minute die exchange technology and can be further validated through an empirical and case-based approach to generalize the findings.

Practical implications

The study guides and facilitates researchers and practitioners in using the most appropriate techniques such as AHP and GTA for empirical studies and in developing, modifying and/or reviewing application frameworks for production. It also guides implementation experience regarding high setup time by using advanced techniques such as single point die exchange (SMDE), which can be beneficiary for both developing and developed country contexts. Industries can accelerate implementation by understanding and using most important AHP, GTA and SMDE techniques.

Originality/value

Lean manufacturing system has been identified as an approach for improving the performance of the process and product. A lean manufacturing system is part of corporate culture, like tools and approaches. High setup time can be classified as waste for the company. Reduction in time is a direct way to increase the productivity and profit. Therefore, there is a need to reduce the time by using some new lean methodology. In global industry, different techniques are used for reduction of time.

Abstract

Purpose

In the modern financial landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gaining prominence, offering significant economic advantages. This research paper aims to investigate the impact of Behavioural Biases (BB) such as Overconfidence Bias (OCB), Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), Herding Bias (HB) and Regret Aversion Bias (RAB) on Investment Decision-Making (IDM). Additionally, it explores how the AI-led Adoption of Digital Advisory Services (ADAS) moderates these biases among Gen Z investors in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilized a convenience sampling method, gathering 457 responses from Gen Z investors in India through an online survey questionnaire. The data was analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results confirm a significant relationship between OCB, FOMO, HB and RAB on IDM. The study also found that ADAS significantly moderated the relationship between FOMO and IDM, as well as between HB and IDM. However, the moderation effect of ADAS was not supported for the relationships between OCB and IDM, and RAB and IDM.

Practical implications

This research offers valuable insights for academics, individual investors, fintech companies and policymakers. It highlights how behavioural biases affect IDM and underscores the importance of AI-enabled digital services in helping Gen Z investors recognize and manage these biases. Policymakers can use these insights to establish standards for AI use, ensuring regulatory compliance and promoting ethical conduct in AI-driven investment decisions.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in its conceptual approach, particularly in examining the moderation role of ADAS in addressing behavioural biases among Gen Z investors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the role of knowledge-sharing behaviors within the relationships between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and feeling trusted in work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consisted from 107 employees working in financial services companies in Jakarta, Indonesia, who underwent an acquisition process. In this study, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine the associations between HPWS and feelings of confidence in job commitment. In addition, the Sobel test was used to test the mediation effect of knowledge-sharing behavior.

Findings

This study found that HPWS have a positive relationship with work engagement and knowledge-sharing behaviors. Accordingly, the feeling trusted by supervisors has a positive, non-significant impact on knowledge-sharing behavior. Conversely, the feeling trusted by supervisors has a negative, non-significant impact on work engagement. Finally, this study also found that knowledge sharing does not lead to HPWS and feeling trusted does not improve work engagement.

Research limitations/implications

Although this study was conducted in a multicultural country, the analysis of cultural aspects is insufficient analysis. Therefore, future research should consider the cultural aspects to further this form of research.

Practical implications

Organizations should note that human resource management practices through HPWS play an important role in improving positive employee outcomes. In addition, companies through managers should manage their relationships with subordinates to optimize work engagement.

Originality/value

Financial services companies not only conduct a financial business, but also an information business. This paper is one of the quantitative studies that examines the work engagement of employees from financial companies that have gone through an acquisition process.

Abstract

Purpose

The significance of financial literacy (FL) in deciding how to allocate one’s investment capital has recently attracted much attention from various market participants and stakeholders. The study examines how FL affects individual investors' investment decisions (ID) in emerging markets. Additionally, the study investigates the potential mediating effects of attitude (ATT) and overconfidence bias (OCB) on the association between FL and ID.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a structured questionnaire to collect data from 311 individual investors in India, using both convenience and snowball sampling methods. The collected data were analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and processed through SMART PLS 4.0 software to test the study’s hypotheses.

Findings

FL alone may not greatly affect ID, but the study enhances understanding of investor behaviour by examining how ATT and OCB mediate the link between FL and ID. The findings imply that FL, combined with positive ATT and overconfidence, empowers individual investors with the knowledge and skills for appropriate decision-making.

Practical implications

This research would benefit financial institutions, financial experts, and individual investors in India since it enables them to evaluate the causes and biases affecting their IDs and manage their portfolios accordingly. Policymakers should develop appropriate FL programs for investors to make informed decisions to achieve financial well-being.

Originality/value

The paper is exceptional in its approach as it delves into the mediating function of ATT and OCB in the intricate association between FL and ID. This innovative approach sets it apart from other studies in the field, making it a unique contribution to literature.
