Abstract

In India, 52% of e-commerce consumers actively engage in hyperlocal commerce, representing a substantial increase in online purchasing and hyperlocal services over the past two years. How individuals discover, select, and acquire products and services has been significantly altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital payments and contactless deliveries have become indispensable in the current dynamic environment, affording consumers enhanced security and convenience. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has enabled the widespread adoption of contactless payments, including Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) chip cards, which eliminate the need for customers to swipe their cards during physical transactions. Particularly in the fast food, pharmaceutical, and supermarket industries, the symbiotic relationship between e-commerce and contactless payments has experienced significant expansion in India. This chapter investigates the synergies between cashless, contactless, and autonomous purchasing in the digital age. This research examines these technologies’ reciprocal reinforcement and interconnections, focusing on their profound influence on retail transactions and purchasing experiences. The progressive development of payment systems is evidenced by the expanding prevalence of contactless transactions, facilitated by innovations such as the “tap to pay” feature partnership between Paytm and Kotak Mahindra. The year 2023 is anticipated to witness several significant developments, including the expansion of virtual retail, the push for contactless transactions, and the establishment of initiatives such as the open network for digital commerce. The range of applications for frictionless, contactless, and autonomous shopping is extensive, encompassing mobile payment applications such as Apple Pay and Google Pay and proprietary apps developed by retailers to enhance the purchasing experience.

Abstract

Purpose

Knife-enabled crime in England and Wales has increased by 7% in the year ending December 2023. Such increases in incidents are cause for concern due to the potential for significant injury and loss of life. This study aims to propose a model of differentiation of offending across 70 cases of violent knife crime (VKC) committed in England and Wales between 2015 and 2020 to inform preventative strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Incident data was collected from online news articles and offender, victim and offence characteristics were recorded. Characteristics were subject to a non-metric multi-dimensional scaling procedure, smallest space analysis (SSA) to differentiate behavioural styles.

Findings

Regional interpretation of the SSA identified three distinct themes (Intimate Partner Violence, Gang-Influenced and Reactive Violence) that related to distinct styles of offending. Classification according to identified offence theme was possible for 69% of cases. Findings are discussed with reference to Social Identity Approach and Criminal Narrative Theory. Potential future research is discussed with recognition of the need to further differentiate offending behaviour in cases of reactive violence.

Practical implications

The theorical and practical implications are discussed with consideration of how the findings may inform preventative strategies as part of a public health approach.

Originality/value

While SSA has been used to differentiate behavioural styles across several types of crime, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first instance in which the method has been used to differentiate behavioural styles across cases of VKC.

Abstract

This chapter investigated tendering in stealth construction, emphasising innovative approaches and methodologies that prioritise environmental protection, safety, efficiency, and aesthetics. It began with an overview of the construction industry’s tendering processes, followed by an in-depth examination of various tendering types, including competitive and negotiated methods. The study highlighted contemporary trends such as electronic tendering, Building Information Modelling (BIM), green and sustainable procurement, risk management, data analytics, artificial intelligence, lean construction practices, and blockchain technology. Moreover, with a specific focus on stealth construction, the chapter further analysed certain criteria, including building cross-section development, visibility, radio frequency emission, and countermeasures. It explored integrating functional construction systems, including environmental, safety, health, and quality management. Additionally, it discussed methods like green building, modular construction, and low-impact techniques. Lastly, the chapter emphasised the strategies to achieve environmental protection, safety, speed, economy, and aesthetics in tendering for stealth construction.

Abstract

Our chapter focuses on the disconnect between economic and cultural policies and the needs of individual firms and creative industry professionals, all of which affect creative and cultural industry (CCI) entrepreneurship in the 21st century. After a review of selected policy trends and the overlooked role of creative industries in developing more sustainable liveable communities worldwide, we discuss recommendations by chapter authors in volumes 18A and 18B for useful policy actions, not only in and for their respective countries of study but also for other geographical contexts. Our particular focus is on how the CCIs have contributed to developing sustainable societies and meeting many targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. Thereafter, we provide an overview of the fifteen chapters distributed over five sections: ‘unusual and temporary places for CCI entrepreneurship’, ‘economic perspectives on CCI entrepreneurship’, ‘organising clustering of CCI entrepreneurs’, ‘cognitive aspects of doing CCI entrepreneurship’, and ‘social spaces and placemaking for CCI entrepreneurs’. Topics discussed include CCI entrepreneurship in rural areas (heritage entrepreneuring, book festivals), social work spaces, creativity and neuroentrepreneurship, strategic networking management for creatives, tensions from economic and artistic logics, collaboration challenges, street art and arts festivals. Countries considered include Estonia, Nigeria, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. We conclude the chapter with a selection of policy implications of chapters in both volumes 18A and 18B, and a research programme and manifesto for researchers to develop novel insights for policymakers, aimed at strengthening the important role of the CCIs in creating more liveable sustainable communities and economies.
